Is Karl Urban 'The Law'?? Maybe This Pic Of Him As JUDGE DREDD Will Help You Decide!!

Published at:  Nov 19, 2010 1:01:30 PM CST

Merrick here...

...with a glimpse of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd in, well, the new JUDGE DREDD movie (which may end up being called, simply, DREDD. We'll see...) Pete Travis (VANTAGE POINT) is directing from a script by Alex Garland (28 DAYS LATER, SUNSHINE).

Know that this is MIGHTY EMBIGGENABLE!!!

Jock, a concept artist working on the film (we've previously linked to his site for concept art of other projects...find it HERE) apparently brought this online. The pic is said to be from test shots/rehearsals, or whatever.

From what I can tell, the image originated HERE at 2000ADOnline.

This looks pretty great and all, but where's Rob Schneider?

    Design

    by clem_snide

I haven't watched the old version for a while (I liked it in a trashy way) - but my gut feeling is the design was pretty good on that movie even if the story wasn't up to scratch. So for the new design although it harks back to early Dredd designs from the comics it doesn't *feel* right. The shoulders need to be chunkier and body armour less so. Something about the helmet doesn't feel right either.

AND THE SONG, "I AM THE LAW" by Anthrax

    by the green gargantua

    Fifteen years in the academy,
He was like no cadet they'd ever seen.
A man so hard, his veins bleed ice,
And when he speaks he never says if twice.
They call him Judge, his last name is Dredd,
So break the law, and you wind up dead.
Truth and justice are what he's fighting for,
Judge Dredd the man, he is the law.
    DROKK IT!

With gun and bike he rules the streets,
And every perp he meets will taste defeat.
Not even Death can overcome his might,
Cause Dredd and Anderson, they won the fight.
When the Sov's started the Apocalypse war,
Mega-City was bombed to the floor.
Dredd resisted, and the judges fought back,
Crushed the Sov's with their counter-attack.
    DROKK IT!

Respect the badge - he earned it with his blood.
Fear the gun - your sentence may be death because...

    I AM THE LAW!
And you won't fuck around no more - I AM THE LAW!
I judge the rich, I judge the poor - I AM THE LAW!
Commit a crime I'll lock the door - I AM THE LAW!
Because in Mega-City... I AM THE LAW!

In the cursed earth where mutants dwell,
There is no law, just a living hell.
Anarchy and chaos as the blood runs red,
But this would change if it was up to Dredd.
The book of law is the bible to him,
And any crime committed is a sin.
He keeps the peace with his law-giver,
    Judge, jury, and executioner.

    CRIME - The ultimate sin,
Your iso-Cube is waiting when he brings you in.
LAW - It's what he stands for,
Crime's his only enemy and he's going to war!

    CRIME - The ultimate sin,

Wasn't the Stallone costume more faithful?

    by photoboy

Doesn't look too bad. I don't know the comics well at all, but Stallone's costume always looked pretty faithful (aside from the missing X on the helmet). This looks a bit less faithful, but maybe it's based on a different comic era?

Personally I rather liked the Stallone film, even though it broke the cardinal rule of showing Dredd's face. The production design, model work and the ABC robot were all outstanding I thought, and it was one of Silvestri's last good scores. I think the only real problem with the film was too much Rob Schneider...

I will be looking forward to seeing how this turns out. As for Urban's chin, maybe they could stick a prosthetic one on! :)

How was Stallone's costume faithul to the comic?

    by ceejaynightwing

Comic Dredd wears no gold apart from the badge and eagle, has green boots and gloves with yellow elbow and knee-pads. Stallone had all black with gold bits of metal on his boots, gloves and cod-piece? This new costume looks a lot more faithul but Karl Urban is not an ounce of Dredd, he has no brutish chin let alone the physique! Ray Stevenson would have been the perfect choice, height, chin, voice and pyhsique all spot on! But these idiots pulling the strings went for a skinny pretty boy instead, what a waste!

    by hint_of_smegma

As someone who's been reading Dredd since his very first appearance, I've gotta say - the more I look at this pic, the more I like it. Definitely inspired by the look of the early strips and the added body armour actually looks cool. Not impressed by the gun - wish they'd gone with the classic lawgiver design, but that's a minor gripe. Really wish Stevenson had landed the role but if they're indeed going for the retro Dredd look, Urban's a good match. Now what I want to know - who's playing Whitey...?

    Interesting

    by majereuk

Intriguing first look. I quite agree that it looks a bit odd at first, but for some reason the larger version of the pic looks rather better. This look certainly harks back to very early Dredd, where he was slimmer (more Clint Eastwood than Stallone) and the costume was less elaborate. As an old traditionalist I'll miss the full-on comic look but it's a bit impractical for stunt work. I hope that the other shoulder has at least some form of eagle design on it.
Regarding the scale of the helmet, we may well see a Van Helsing situation here, where the size varies depending on the distance of the shot. This one should, at least, be a more faithful Dredd story-wise, with the number of 2000AD alumni working on it.

    by cobra--kai

Looks like a fan made costume. I'm hoping that this is very much the 'test' footage but the reality seems that it will cost A LOT to realise the Dredd Universe on screen, and maybe these guys just don't have the budget.
Dredd should be an 'immoveable object', the original Terminator for law breakers. They don't need an actor for this role, in fact too much acting / emoting could hurt the character.
Also they need to put Urban in the same room as Weller and to let them talk about ROBOCOP and how to play to audiences with only a chin on show!
I agree with Smegma, I would have preferred Ray Stephenson for his intimidating physicality but thay ship has sailed. Hope Urban does a good job.

    by alienfanatic

His jaw should be almost outside of the lower part of the mask. The helmet is supposed to seem like it's almost a part of Dredd, rather than just apparel. Tighten things up and maybe we can buy it. (Also, he could use a bit more of a grizzled beard. That five o'clock, Gillette Guy shadow just isn't going to cut it.)

    by joaquin_ondamoon

...I myself am psyched. I like Urban - at least he can act - and I'm happy to see Garland attached. Yeah, the helmet's a bit too big, the shoulderpads could be larger - I don't give a fuck. It looks more like the earliest versions of Dredd: the Wagner/Ezquerra days. There's a long wait between this 1 photo and the films release. I'd like to see a cool version of Death and the Dark Judges, and perhaps a Cursed Earth Saga sequel. Mean Machine goin' up to 4!
The Stallone version sucked in so many ways I can't count them all. The only thing it had going for it was Diane Lane in skintight leather, and Armand Assante as Rico totally chewing up the scenery. "You want the chaos?! I'M the chaos!!!" Whomever decided to cast Rob Schneider should burn in Hell for Eternity. Actually, anyone who casts Schneider in ANYTHING should burn in Hell. I know - right?

    by kubricksbellend

Urban had better start taking some pills to make his head bigger. Yeah, it's the old style Judge's outfit, but I really like the design of the previous Dredd film - the ABC Warrior, the Angel family, etc. That all felt faithful to me - and, for my sins, I quite like Rob Schnieder - he's like a little inoffensive Pauly Shore. But Urban isn't Dredd - it just looks a little wrong in this pic.

...this looks OK - the comic book costume is impractical anyway, so it's going to be adapted or reworked in some form or other. This looks fine. I'll reserve judgement for when i see it. It simply cannot be as much of a clusterfuck as the abortion that was the Stallone version. I remember seeing an interview at the time with Andrew Vajna, the original film's exec producer, talking about how "Dredd in the comic is so dark and violent, we needed to make him more likeable"....that shit was an abomination.

Stubbly small chin. Boo hoo. Suit is kinda more Carlos E. than Bolland but maybe that's a stylistic choice. Those guys with the Fan Film had an excellent helmet & costume & CG Lawmaster mock-up- but they didn't have Urban who was best thing in Trek-o-9, and he was pretty decent in RED. by chuck_chuckwalla

Over the years comic artists have exaggerated to such an such an extreme that it looks like a Mad Magazine caricature of Dredd. And now people think the actor has to replicate it. But if you look at the earlier Dredd comics, we was drawn more realistically. And in my mind Brian Bolland's Judge Dredd is the definitive Dredd and Urban seems to fit that design perfectly.

That's the thing - I think Urban WILL do a good job and I'm really digging the new uniform design. I will always think that the current best fit would be Stevenson - although my dream choice would have been Clancy Brown. That guy simply IS Dredd like no-one else. But Urban will nail the '70's retro Dredd I've no doubt. Really hoping this movie is just the start of a bigger Dredd universe involving the Dark Judges getting the screen treatment. I want Necropolis onscreen. Then, I can die fulfilled. Very hopeful for this flick and the more I look at that picture, the more hopeful I'm getting. Naysayers can go jump in a lake. That's a great Dredd in the making.

The Sly version, no matter what you thought of it, was a pretty close interpretation of the comic, minus removing the helmet of course. It was a big, sci fantasy flick. This new iteration has a very shaky-cam S.W.A.T. feel about it. I'm not suggesting that might not be a cool way to go, but it's pretty fuckin' far from the gonzo dark humor of 2000AD.

Helmet is poorly sized and Urban's face looks miniscule. You really do need someone with a colossal mandible. The shoulder pads look cheap rubbery and crap - I get that they aren't supposed to be metal, but still...even Stallone's costume with all it's diferences captured it better than this. Regarding the oversized helmet I'm actually okay with it as my favourite Dredd artists were Bolland and Robertson and they both drew Dredd with a large helmet (ooer missus).

He's too handsome/pretty. And all that scruff can't cover it up. Dredd isn't "ugly," but he looks HARD, especially due to his jaw and scowl. Like Clint Eastwood.Since Dredd's completely covered up, except for his lower face, that lower part is what — visually — is going to make the character, or not. Anyone can wear the suit. That DOESN'T make them Judge Dredd.

And to HercsShowerRadio, yes, when the only thing you see of the guy is his lower jaw, it needs to be the 'right' kind of lower jaw. Their positioning it as a testbed for the concept of a movie remake series, where the same movie gets completely reinvented every two years. "STREK: EVOLUTION", "STREK: METAMORPHOSIS", "STREK: TRANSFORMATIONS", "STREK: THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT" etc.

Oh, and since I mentioned Stallone, THE EXPENDABLES sucked...

    by burnhollywood

At best, it could've been a black action comedy in the mode of PULP FICTION, LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS or KISS KISS, BANG BANG. At worst, it should've been "so camp it's good" in the mode of Schwarzeneggar's COMMANDO (complete with a steam-pipe impalement of a homosexual heavy).
It was just "meh" to the max. The villains didn't chew any scenery, the heroine looked too tough to be a defiant-but-victimized peasant girl (Alice Braga wasn't available?) and the plot was overly complicated (did I really give a shit AT ALL that the peasant girl and the general were related?).
Just saying. I queued the DVD up for some pals, and we all had that bored, glazed expression by the second reel.

Karl Urban just doesn't have that 'mug'. Judge Dredd is supposed to have that extruded chin out of his helmet - that was part of his character. Not saying Karl Urban's a bad actor, but can he pull off one of the most badass comic-book characters of all time? Who are they gonna cast as Lobo? Jake Gyllenhaal?

Most Dredd issues I own are drawn by Brian Bolland.... Bolland's Dredd was pretty scrawny.. The Helmet and Shoulder pads were the biggest thing on him... When DC had the Dredd rights in the 90's they made him more beefcake.... Like many comic book characters there has been more than one interpretation.. be wary which interpretations you call unfaithful!!!

    Being That...

    by makneil

Being that this version of Judge Dredd appears that it is going to follow the comic, then Dredd isNEVER going to take off his helmet.

This means that Karl Urban will have to have the gravitas, the presence, to play Dredd without his eyes contributing to his craft.

Personally I have no idea if Urban can handle the role, though the fact that it appears that it's going to be taken more seriously than Sylvester Stallone's "I am the Law!!" version brings comfort.

    Regarding Lincoln

    by chimpjnr

As per Spielberg: "Daniel Day-Lewis would have always been counted as one of the greatest of actors, were he from the silent era, the golden age of film or even some time in cinema's distant future. I am grateful and inspired that our paths will finally cross with Lincoln,” Spielberg said in a statement. Hyperbole? Maybe. To be fair, this has been one of the Beard's pet projects for a couple of decades. I just finished reading "The Men Who Would Be King" about DreamWorks story, and it's clear this was a passion project for him. Still think his first choice, Liam Neeson, would have been the the best though. Every time I think of Lincoln though, the first thing that springs to mind is Tyler Durden's comment about his being a potentially good fighter - big guy, big reach...

    by hansbubi

...I don't know. I'm one of Moon's biggest supporters, but I kind of rolled my eyes when the trailer revealed the "hook" of experiencing the final eight minutes of someone's life. It seems like a forced plot device. Now, I just hope that the movie knows how to use its gimmick well enough to make the movie both stimulating and entertaining (the Inception effect). Last thought: I felt like the trailer needed a moment that gets a "whoa, cool" moment," that gets the audience to say "yeah, I'm seeing that movie," especially a moment that earns that reaction because of a clever idea...not an expensive special effect moment.

I don't think the Source Code trailer has that "hey, this actually looks smart and entertaining" moment because the second half of the trailer seems to reveal that the character will spend the second half of the movie fighting against the "people" that were in charge of his secret program. I kind of takes away any interest in the first half of the movie when you know he's going to realize he's been set up or the system he's working under is corrupt.

Anyone thinking the uniform has to change, think again. Here is the original JUDGE DREDD uniform in a live action clip:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=227D97ZmnmQ

Looks faithful and credible. It's foolishness to think the uniform needs to change. But what do you expect from clueless people making this film! Something faithful?

    Forget it.

The leaked screenplay is just Die Hard set in the future. It's not a proper Dredd screenplay so don't expect the new film to be a proper story with lots of Dredd humour and crazy perps. There is none in Garland's screenplay. This is going to be a gritty but very unimaginative Dredd film with zero imagination and a crappy uniform.

But if you look at the helmet (fnar, fnar) it's wider like the 2010 photo but actually looks right. Maybe it's an awkward angle. Maybe they need some Z'dar...

Also, having not read the script myself. Does it do a good enough of introducing Dredd to kick off a franchise?

Not sure why the producers of the new Dredd movie are choosing to change the costume. Surely, films like Spiderman prove that if an iconic design isn't broke, then don't fix it! The fan-made Judge Dredd related film 'Judge Minty', seen in recent trailers on the web, has the costume, helmet and bike 100% spot on. Yesterday, I even saw pics of Dredd creator Carlos Esquerra and comics fan Jonathan Ross, photographed on-set of this accomplished low budget project. 2000AD artist Greg Staples looks perfect as Judge Dredd. DNA Films take note!

    by batfunk

DNA Films need to urgently hire the costume designer from the fan-made film Judge Minty. Daniel Carey-George has masterfully recreated the iconic Dredd helmet to perfection. He could help the big budget movie achieve cult status. DNA Films and 2000AD would be foolish and arrogant to change the design of Dredd. It didn't work for the Stallone movie and it doesn't work on the Karl Urban pic above. Maybe Harry or Quint could start a petition to get Judge Minty's designers working as costume consultants on the big budget version. We all know Brian Bolland and Mike McMahon created the definitive look of Dredd, so why not get them involved too? Jock is an amateur in comparison. Check the link below:

    by daglesj

As other have mentioned Dredd in the early days was quite a thin, slight character with a normal chin.

So from that point of view Urban works just fine. But...

Yes I agree the helmet is too large but this could be a mock-up helmet that wasnt designed for final filming.

Yes I agree that inless they are shooting the end of the Cursed Earth he should be clean shaven.

As for the uniform? It looks a more practical design for a future 'cop' that either the comic or previous film designs. But again could be one of a few test outfits. I know they went through several designs for Stallone's movie.

I am not too concerned at this stage.

    by coolfan123

The Judge Minty fan film is the way to do a proper Dredd film. That uniform will work and is 100 percent accurate and respectful to the source material.

Urban's uniform is a confused mishmash. For example, the producers have decided to call the film 'DREDD' rather than 'JUDGE DREDD ' for fear of people thinking this is a remake of the 1995 Stallone film, but then they go and give Urban a near identical Stallone Versace designed badge and chest padding, making him look a fair bit like Stallone's Dredd Totally crazy logic, that.

And as for the shoulder pads, they look feeble and pathetic. This is more Judge 'found my uniform at a jumble sale' Dredd than Judge Dredd. :P

  • While I am not crazy about "Karl Urban's mug" as Dredd, when you say that Dredd was skinny you have hit it on the mark. Judge Dredd was never the ultra-muscular hero type, and in fat he was almost rail-thin in most depictions.

In fact, in most portrayals he had no muscle-tone to speak of.

That Dredd started to develop the over musclebound look and big chin.

I guess it was to go from the Eastwood/McQueen Hollywood action man look to the then fashionable Stallone/Arnie action hero.

I always prefered the more skinny Dredd to the often silly "Tom of Finland look".

    Original uniform vs Urban uniform

    http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/3331/dreddvsdredd1.jpg

The original looks a lot better, cleaner, less messy. Urban's looks a right mishmash and cheap looking. It's a huge mistake.

I emailed DNA Films and urged them to use the original uniform version shown in that link. I also suggested they go with

JUDGE DREDD: I AM THE LAW

    as the title.

Calling it DREDD is dumb and an insult to John Wagner, the creator of Judge Dredd. The character is always known as JUDGE DREDD. It's never 20000AD featuring DREDD.

If people feel as strongly as me, email DNA at info@dnafilms.com

They need to know not all fans are happy about this. I think they're clueless. And I haven't even mentioned Alex Garland's screenplay!Let's just say the words

  • done it: leather and practical as much as possible.i dont know about the brown color though, the Judges are cops with absolute power, they are not military, they need the blue color.but i dont know how the general color, mood and atmosphere of the rest of the film will be.

back to the suit,as i said you need it as much practical as possible because we must take into account that this is a live action movie not a comic where even yellow spandex work for a bad-ass mutant with claws.the most important thing is that the actor must feel comfortable with his suit.this will help him to act better in his role because his mind wont be distracted and his body wont be limited by a very uncomfortable, impractical suit.

there was a reason that Sly in the first movie was walking with his wife-beater the whole time, with the exception of the intro sequence where he wore the outfit but he only had to stand still and shoot bullets.

another thing is that the practical outfil, will help the actor and the stunt-men and the director,to make a bigger variety of actions scene which will also look more smoothly, because they wont be physically limited by the restrictions of the outfit and they wont also have the the fear that the outfit might torn apart during a difficult action stunt ie the big golden hawk-on-shoulder might get off when the actor jumps from a window and the director has to reshoot it.

that's why i dont have a problem with the suit.but the helmet is too big for this actor's head, that's something that we all agree on.

    Bleh.

Yes, apart from one scene at the beginning of the screenplay, the entire story is set in Peach Tree Block. Yes, *every scene* is interior. This screenplay does not showcase Mega-City 1 because it would cost too much to make or maybe Alex Garland, the screenwriter, has never read more than one 2000AD Dredd story and doesn't know the city consists of more than just one block! :P

Agreed - Judge Minty Dredd uniform is best!!!

    by batfunk

The makers of Judge Minty could save DNA Films' neck in an instant by helping supply suits for their big budget feature. The 'Minty' films' Dredd helmet/costume is nigh on perfect. Their designs follow the comic AND look practical. The movies are about creating the fantastic, not necessarily making something that would work in reallife. In this respect, let's keep Dredd's bike with it's massive wheels and Dredd's helmet, pads and badge as perfected by Brian Bolland and Mike McMahon!!! Is that too much to ask? If EVERYTHING had to be 'practical' then superheros would NEVER have cloaks for crying out loud!!!

    Reply to Talkback

  • You've nailed it! I think this could be the huge potential flaw with this new film. Going the realistic route. As any Dredd reader will tell you, Judge Dredd isn't meant to be that realistic. Sure, the story covers material like democracy, freedom, fascism etc but there's just as much crazy comedy, weird crimes, extreme satire of modern day life. I don't believe Dredd was meant to be that realistic. Going for a realistic uniform may be missing the point of what Judge Dredd is all about. And anyway, Mega-City 1 is the most violent city on Earth. Judges need larger shoulder pads to protect them from all the crazy perps. They would want large imposing uniforms, not wimpy ones like Urban's! Dredd has to be imposing.

In any event, if I recall, the Stallone version only started to suck because he took off the helmet and because Armand Assante showed up to chew the scenery (as only he can) ... and because of Rob Schneider ... why exactly was Schneider in the film? He has one excellent moment where he does a Stallone impression, but if I remember, as a comedic sidekick, they didn't really give his character much to do.

    by houbou

Seriously, take any Judge Dredd comic and it was pretty mich Stallone's face.. Now mind you the movie.. was.. well not that good... Assante was wrong for the part, the plot was wrong period. And Rob Schneider as comic relief.. uh.. not that credible to begin with... OK!! the movie sucked!! but Silvester Stallone was Judge Dredd.. in the same fashion as Hugh Jackman is Wolverine.. Stallone was right for the part, but the movie was wrong, just stupid. Now.. I remember Karl Urban in Hercules and Xena Warrior Princess, he played multiple roles, including Julius Ceasar and I think Cupid. He could do a really good Dredd. He's got chops as an actor. I even will admit liked the "Doom" movie as well as Star Trek. But, if Stallone could reprise the role of Dredd, He would still be number 1 for the role.
