Robert Smigel, The Man Behind TV FUNHOUSE And Beneath Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, Close To Deal For Rob Riggle CBS Pilot!!
I am – Hercules!!
Comedy Central’s “TV Funhouse” was my pick for the funniest half-hour series of the ‘00s, and Deadline Hollywood says “Funhouse” mastermind Robert Smigel is getting back into the half-hour business.
The former SNL and “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” writer, who also provides the voice and thoughts of Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, is apparently close to a deal for a sitcom pilot starring fellow SNL vet Rob Riggle.
The sitcom follows a former Big Man On Campus who goes to work for the nerd he mocked in high school.
Smigel and Riggle have both written Adam Sandler movies: Smigel had a hand in “Don’t Mess With The Zohan” and did uncredited work on a number of Sandler’s other movies, and Riggle scripted the upcoming “Jack & Jill.”

Make an IT's ALWAYS SUNNY talkback

The Safety Gang skit is still one of the greatest things ever to air on TV. Ever. Thank you Robert Smigel.

Goddamn he is a funny dude.
-
Conan without Smigel, not so much.
-
...for having a hand in YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN...Riggle was awesome on The Daily Show. I wonder who will play the nerd?
-
...was actually pretty good. Though I prefer the opening bits more than anything else. We need a prequel to fill the Hot Shots! void.
-
Wish he had lived so he could come back.
-
At his best he's mildly annoying. I'm not sure I've ever laughed at him, and I've seen him in far too many movies and TV shows.

It will be the greatest 6 episodes ever produced.

For me to poop on...
whah?
-
because he served his country, and yet still joined the Daily Show and mocked the crap out of the Bush administration.
Sort of like how there's some people who hate Joe Lieberman because he used to be a member of the Democratic party, but 99 times out of 100, sided with the Republicans.
Yup, politics get dragged into a non-political talkback once again. (Removes pin, throws grenade, steps back.)
-
Not that I remember him on the show but who needs another Will Ferrell? Ferrell was great on SNL but he moved on, why get a carbon copy? Riggle has had a better career for it. Also, Sudekis is great.
-
He can't really do very much and his schtick gets old very quickly. He is best in small doses.
-
He's a fuckin' douchebag. The doppelganger, not Rob Riggle.
-
Honestly, Zohan is the most intolerant segregationist nonsense of the last ten years, And that includes 24
-
in The Hangover. But like Brad Garrett, he's a big bear of a guy, and I think, more suited as a supporting player than a main character.
-
Mike White would be perfect, and both are the same exact age.
-
I thought that 99.9% of AICNers hate it for the lame knee-jerk lazy comedy that it is. And Zohan? That was to be taken seriously in any way shape or form? I didn't like that either because I thought it was lazy, easy "comedy". When it comes to comedy, it should be PC, so as not offend anyone? Tell that to Lisa Lampenlli, Chris Rock, the late Richard Pryor, Don Rickles, etc.etc.etc.
-
It's the Fucking Catalina Wine Mixer!!!!

for a comedy in bad taste to work it has to be funny. A comedy that bases it's material on xenophobia has to at least have something to say or it's just mean spirited.
I don't suppose the majority of talkbackers have much time for crappy comedies like ZOHAN but for the site to celebrate the career of Smigel without at least noting that he helped to write a transparent attack on muslims aimed at impressionable twelve year old boys is pretty weak.
Richard Pryor and Chris Rock i'm familiar with, the others are familiar names who didn't make very big waves here in the UK. Of course they obviously pushed the boundaries of good taste with their material, but first of all, they're actually funny, and second compare their shtick to that of Martin Lawrence or Tommy Davidson and the difference is clear, when they do their white guy/black guy stuff the former two comics' material is informed by politics and philosophy. Tommy D and Martin Lawrence are as racist as the seventies and eighties cracker comics that they replaced.
Outsourced, meh, is it funny?
-
Hopefully he can carry a sitcom. Comes across as an ensemble guy. Who knows.
-
Meh suits it perfectly. I'm curious. What is your opinion of Russell Brand? I thought at first he was an overly precious, egocentric twat ( My Booky Wook, Wooky Book, whatever...(making throw up sounds)), but after seeing recent appearances on Conan and Nightline, I actually kinda like the guy.
-
Eddie Izzard though.
-
Sorry Mr. McFly. I meant I was just about to start waxing it.
-
funny guy, terrible actor. Great unprepared, horrible when scripted, including his own scripts.
IMHO
-
On talk shows he shines, onscreen...nope.
-
I thought him hilarious in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Was I the only one?
-
of the UK, discovered him, when he was fresh and new. And yes, he was funny (hilarious?), but I think I prefer him in smaller doses, than in lead and major supporting roles.
-
Yes I do believe you were the only one. Russell Brand is insufferable and needs to go away.
-
Smigel getting a show is great, but Rob Riggle is kind of a douche, he can be funny from time to time but mostly he's just not enjoyable to watch onscreen.

Brand was hilarious in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." I even thought "Get Him To The Greek" was pretty funny. Personally, all of my hatred is due entirely to his 'round-the-clock access to Katy Perry's pussy.
-
Love his humor.
