Does Jason Statham = Charles Bronson?? A Trailer For His Remake Of THE MECHANIC!!

Merrick here...
MSN has the trailer for THE MECHANIC, starring Jason Statham, Ben Foster, and Donald Sutherland. It's directed by Simon West (the first TOMB RAIDER movie, CON AIR) and is a remake of Michael Winner's 1972 film of the same name (available HERE) - that one starred Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent. You can find the trailer HERE (including HD), but I was unable to successfully embed MSN's reel so I'm bumming ropeofsilicon's embed for your consideration...

Sure ugly looking movie. Kinda jaundiced. Hope that's not the final color/visual texture, although I suspect that it is. --- Follow Merrick on Twitter! ---

    by UrbanSamurai

I shouldn't start comparing this to the original, which is a very cool movie btw, quite underrated, when it comes to movies about hitmen, assassins and such. Trailer looks okay, what I do not like is that they changed the amorality of the original and made it a revenge tale. Always loved that ambiguity in the original, in characters as well as in story.

  • Nov. 16, 2010, 12:55 p.m. CST

    Same color as "Fight Club".

    by fiester

Doesn't really bother me. I always thought this flick would be a terrific remake and I love seeing Statham in it. This is a win.

    Like Ben Foster...

by eustisclay good to see him do some mainstream flicks. And was a big Jan Michael Vincent fan. White Line Fever, Big Wednesday, Defiance. But that guy drank himself out of a career.

I'm a fan of Jason Statham, enjoyed the Transporter for what it was (a low-key, poor man's Bond), but grew increasingly disappointed with the hammy sequels. This movie looks more gritty, not as "MTV stylized" as Transporters 2/3, while capitalizing on the strong & silent, cockney Bruce Willis kind of appeal that Statham projects.

    The original film

    by macheesmo3

is quintessential 70's. Thought out characters that act reasonably like real people.(and talk like real people) the age difference between Bronson and Vincent made their mentor /student relationship feasible.... This looks like another Statham vehicle with a famous name on it...... SPOILER ALERT (I wonder if it's going to end with the awesome triple cross and splosion of the students car like in the original?) I bet not as that removes any chances of a sequel....

    The original was good

    by The McPoyle Clan

And as someone pointed out, the relationship between Bronson and Vincent was real enough to give the ending some added punch. Trailers are cut to sell the sizzle, but if the remake doesn't have any steak, it's gonna seem fake and therefore fail. Hey, that rhymed. I also doubt it will have the same great locations the original had.

I'm wondering if they will keep the same finale that the Bronson film had. I don't want to spoil it, but that was a very, very strong ending. It made an already solid movie that whole better.

    70's remake = fun

    by kurtisaurus

Good to see The Mechanic getting some love, plus it's fun to see Sutherland and Foster in a decently budgeted film. Too bad the trailer makes it look like every other action flick on DVD.

  • Nov. 16, 2010, 3:06 p.m. CST

    by kurtisaurus

Yeah that ending is what I remember most about the original. I'll be interested if they keep it.

  • Nov. 16, 2010, 3:09 p.m. CST

    This is NOT cool

    by johnnyangelheart

The previews seem to indicate that this is in no way a remake of the original "Mechanic" but is instead another boring buddy/revenge movie. This kinda of sux and I'm disappointed.

  • Nov. 16, 2010, 3:26 p.m. CST

    Seems promising

    by Anacott_Steel

I am tired of all these remakes, but this one I look forward to. It helps that it is rated R, and the writer of the original (Lewis John Carlino) co-scripted the remake. Two things that this version may not have, the first 16 minutes being dialogue-free, and that bada$$ ending.

    Looks fine

    by AlienFanatic

It's just another action movie. It's not like the original was a classic. And watching the trailer, I can already tell that Donald Sutherland double-crosses him. You don't have a man selling out his own son that doesn't turn out to be "the" bad guy by the end. Hey, I could be very wrong, but Hollywood is the cliché capital of the world.

    The glamorous assassin

    by lv_426

in films is getting kinda ridiculous. Having said that, this film looks like it stays close to the Transporter films formulas a bit, but it looks like it should be a fun action film.
Still though, is someone gonna ever do a film that treats the "hitman" as the sad and desperate type of individual that real life ones are? I love a good fun action film, but a more serious drama that portrayed hitman in a believable manner would be really refreshing.

  • Nov. 16, 2010, 4:49 p.m. CST

    by lv_426

Speaking of ninjas, I think that Hollywood might be able to make some dough with a moderately budgeted remake of ENTER THE NINJA.
Of course, they need a really good actor to play the villain, Charles Venarius. Someone who can really ham it up with style.

Statham should be good for this...

    by matineer

but I'd rather see fewer remakes. As for modern movie color desaturation, I don't get it. Are they trying to establish a tone with color rather than story? Is cheaper film stock being used? Not so found of "dark and gritty" which may have been new in 1989 but is cliched (sic) now. End rant.

Do All Trailers Have to Look This Fucking Bad?

    by Uzala

Seriously, have mainstream moviegoers nowadays really been brainwashed to accept this generic, cardboard advertising? The choppy, trending over-editing, the obnoxious "badass" pseudo-rock soundtrack, and Statham's apparent inability to come across as remotely human or at least an interesting automaton (remember, this is the trailer I'm bitching about here, not the actual movie). Is there some kind of machine Hollywood filmmakers use to auto-edit trailers, or what? It's fucking astounding how few good trailers there are anymore. Does Jason Statham equal Charles Bronson? I can't speak for his other work, but absolutely not in this trailer.

I'm actually British. Although I think you're right that Statham is more popular with Americans. Actually, at first I didn't like Statham because he was British and was doing stuff that was usually done by American action actors and it just didn't sit well with me. His behaviour and delivery of the tough guy lines in an English accent just didn't work for me but I guess now I have gotten used to it. However, it surprises me that Americans took to him much more quickly as I would have thought it would be even more weird to them but maybe they like the novelty of it?

...absolutely. I was a fan of JMV. Buster and Billie, Bite the Bullet, Vigilante Force. I even remember when there was talk of him and Paul Newman starring in a film adaptation of The Front Runner, but it fell apart. But I just don't know understand someone who was really on the cusp of making it really big and just blow it all. I mean the guy could have been a good action star, and he was an underrated actor, but just liked to drink and fight too much. Just sad.
