Trailer released for MY SUCKY TEEN ROMANCE + You Can Still Help Finish The Movie!

Published at:  Nov 16, 2010 3:33:36 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Today at Wizard's AUSTIN COMIC CON, the now 18 year old Emily Hagins, director of PATHOGEN & THE RETELLING, is finishing her third and probably last film of her teenage years, MY SUCKY TEEN ROMANCE...

MY SUCKY TEEN ROMANCE trailer from Emily Hagins on Vimeo.

It was so cool today at the Austin Comic Con. I was talking to Emily Hagins about some historical facts that we each found amusing when this father with his little girl come up. She was 11 years old - and had a book she wrote that she wanted me to read. Having just spoke to Emily, I smiled because in many ways this was the event we were first talking about just before. It is amazing how quickly time has passed.

Anyway, if you go to: www.indiegogo.com/mysuckyteenromance - you'll see that Emily is in the process of attempting to raise $5,500 to finish this film. Personally, I don't know about you, but I'm digging it!

She has definitely gotten a lot better with her filmmaking. Yes, it's obviously still an indie flick, but it does look like she set out to make a certain type of movie and it looks like she did alright so far. She definitely keeps putting in the work and advancing her skills. I bet we hear her name more on some bigger films one of these days. Keep doing your thing.

that this "Twilight" knockoff stars one Tina Rodriguez, younger sister of director Robert Rodriguez. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Mexican people place great importance on "la familia"?You damn well know HE could kick in $5500 without blinking an eye. There is nothing particular special about this girls film, it looks just as good as any other teenager or amateur directors films. So, there is no reason for us to support her in particularSince you are the one showing her such favoritism by promoting her on your site(something many teen and starting directors would kill for), why not cough up the $5500 yourself?

Harry, fuck... Harry. I love this site. I really do, and I'm not just saying that cuz I'm drunk/stoned right now, on a sunday night. I really do love this site. I don't even bother reading other sites. Holy FUCK I can type fast. Anyways, even in my drunk/stoned haze I can see the bad idea here of pimping this girl on your site. This girl has something almost NO ONE in this talkback has. FUCKING AMBITION! She doesn't just TALK about shit she would do. She has fucking DONE IT. So you put it up here so the reputably SHITTIEST people in the world can take a crap on her film? Just pay for it yourself! However much she needs, just give it to her. Sure you may be thinking to yourself "Well why give her the money when I can raise it through my following on the site" But the reality is, not that many people are going to contribute. I've been trying to make my own work for years now, I know how hard it is to get money together, and I still won't throw her a dime, and I actually LIKE what she's doing. The amount of people here that WOULD throw in a couple bucks isn't worth the shitty attitude the rest of these dicks are going to bring to the table. What's the solution? GIVE HER SOME FUCKING MONEY YOURSELF! Or Rodriguez, if her sister is really in the flick... That is all.

    by discogodfather

He needs to remember that the people he's asking for money don't have it because after Mom raised the rent on their basement "apartment" they barely had enough left over for the signed Katee Sackhoff photo and original in-box Rodimus Prime figure they found on eBay. Times got tough when their hours got cut at Blockbuster because of Redboxes.

I mean, Harry's friend with RR, why not ask him to do it for free? Or any one of many other "friends" he claims to have? Heck, why not give her all the money he makes from ONE DVD column that he writes?
But most importantly, why should I pay for HER movie when I already got 3 film school grad friends looking for finance for their scripts [one of them with an A-list TV actor].

This look really good and I`ve been Inspired!

    by sachman

Harry I`ve worked in Cinema for the past 10 Years and they say things come in 3, 10 Years ago at College I wanted to become a film Director so I made short films and did a George Mcfly and was afriad that they were not anygood and and they were not to be honest as I was developing my own film stle as you do, this hobbie has always been something part time. A good mate of mine someone who I`ve collaberated with on many occasions for his own short films when we were kids took a different rougt and became a stand up comedin and has recently showed up on Michal Macenter road show (Its a comedy stand up show were a lot off new talent apper on in the UK) this year this guy has deals with the BBC and all sorts. He came over my house last night to check Predators on Blue Ray and told me to quit my job and concentrate on making my movie that I`ve been going on about for years! He showed me some stuff that he was going to perform for his show and I was really Proud of what he has done in the past 10 years and reflecting back on what I`ve done I really had not done a great deal in conparsion to achive the mission satment that the 19yr old kid in me set out to achive 10 years ago. This Girls film looks really good I mean that REALLY GOOD and I think If she can Grade it and give it a certain look and atmosphere about it! The Acting seems ok for the flick that it sets out to be thou not fond off the guy that looks like the Twilght dude for exactly that reason but then thats maybe the joke as I`ve not seen the flick I`ll reserve judgment. Harry the UK Film industry is in utter shambles right now. That web site Indie GO GO does it work for people in the UK? As I would love to give it a shot and raise money for my own projects. I`m in the minority here but I think THIS IS COOL NEWS as there should be a lot more places for NEW TALENT to go too for advice and explore what they are cabable off, Film school is SO expensive and that why I Love Robert Rodrguise coz he just DID IT!. And thats exactly what this Girl is doing shes not a Talker (And I`ve met loads of them in my live) Shes a Doer and after having my ass Kicked to do somthing by My comic Friend, this was just what I needed to get my head down and do some shit, Harry Keep up the good work, Have you ever thought about having a section on this site that let people that wanna get into the industry be aware off any Major Competitions? as I so would of loved to have entered the Grindhouse Trailer one?

As for the jerks on here that are lableing this uncool news, an 18year old had the ambition and drive to MAKE A FUCKING MOVIE! WHAT HAVE YOU GUYS DONE LATLY!

Now I`m off to NOT Play Black Opps but to follow my Dream! in the meantime here is my Doritos comercial that I did for the Doritos King of ad comp in the UK unfortunatly we did not win :-(

    Hope you guys like it!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVMlwf2Onu0

and Harry If I could I got a mate that might be able to Grade it for her for free so he could get some experience on his showreel! I can send to to his website and stuff so you can check it out!

    Looks better than "Vampires Suck"

    by slappy magoo

But then again, "My Nieces Marching With Their High School Band In the Memorial Day Parade" looks better than "Vampires Suck."

I think Harry's idea is to make her the grassroots Obamaesque small-contributor folk hero of the AICN community. Rather than have one person pony up the balance of her bill, have 550 people pony up 10 bucks each. It has its charm, but really, if she wants to make movies, have her do it the now-traditional way. No, not with kneepads. Find someone with some juice in Hollywood who can see financing an ambitious 18-year old's indie film for the PR stunt it is (or could be) pony up the balance of the dough in exchange for an executive producer credit, and release the movie as their "presentation." "Robert Rodruiguez Presents My Sucky Teen Romance, A Comedy By Emily Hagins." Throw it on the college campus circuit and play it other nerdfests where it would possibly build some buzz, then see what happens from there, whether it would be worth a limited release or go DTV.

OR, she could go the route of some bands like Marillion, who have gotten people to pre-pay for the next album, before it's even done (before they even start recording in earnest) in exchange for deluxe editions of that album. This way, the band can make the album they want to make with no studio interference. Hagins can offer people to pre-pay for the DVD/Blu-Ray/VOD/whatever. 10 bucks upfront based on that trailer alone, she could probably get a few hundred people to pony up the dough based on pure curiosity.

    by faaaaah_q

why the hell is this site promoting and raising funds for a little girl who apparently only aspires to shitty-ly rip off the absolutely terrible, indie-hipster films that she is influenced by?

how long has she been making films? did she waste time and money in film school like many of us? has she lived on a diet of bread and rice for more than 5 years just to scrape together enough money to afford camera rental? i've done all these things, am 26, have been making films since i was 10 and nobody gives a shit about them or helping me in any way.

Sorry that you're eating ramen, faaaaah_q, but you made your choice and she made hers. She's been interested in making movies since she was 11, and made her first one when she was 12. She's completed two feature-length films, numerous shorts and music videos, and now she's finishing up her third movie. She didn't waste money in film school, she put her nose to the grindstone and got to work. Her films are all far beyond her years, and I really look forward to seeing more from her in the future.

The only reason she has made feature films is because of the "angle" of her being female, young and into horror movies. She ran into the right people and the right time that wanted to support a feel good story. Has nothing to do with her ability as a filmmaker.

If she's going to be supported like a professional then she must be judged as such. Her work is shit. Total amateur, uninspired, regurgitated shit...just from a young female perspective which is why people support her.

The problem with the digital age...

    by mustgofaster

is that film making equipment (cameras, editing software) has become so cheap and available that literally ANYONE can make a film, and that's why there's so much crap out there. Now I'm not saying this girl has no talent. But twenty or thirty years ago it would have been impossible for her to knock out film after film in her teens. She would have gone to film school, made a grad film and if it was good someone would give her a shot. It worked better in the old days. If you were genuinely passionate about film you would have no choice but to get formal training. There is no filtering process anymore, anyone can just grab a digital camera and shoot something with their friends and pass it off as their "feature film".

They were promoting this at NYCC as well and I notice its not just AICN begging for financing for the young lady as well. I've seen the same trailer and PSA for $$$ over at Shock 'til you drop.

I watched the trailer and while you admire somebody who is doing what many of us wanted to try (making movies, writing/completing screenplays, writing books) the fact of the matter is that the trailer isn't that much better (artistically) than what I've seen from other indie/ self-produced trailers recently (thought comes to my mind Contagion aka Bio-Slime). If anything this movie reminds me in acting, directing and cinematography of a film called Time Chasers. Not a "bad" film really but you know it's not made by what many would call here a pro.

Good that she's already got people giving her props and all but really I'm not seeing anything different from any other indie small budget film that wasn't funded, produced or distributed by a studio.

Maybe Harry should pub a few of these directors from time to time instead of just one person who he's friends with and maybe you'd see less flack from the TBers. NUt it's your site Harry do whatever the hell you want.

AICN should create a subheading: "Where the trolls are the rule, not the exception." Why must all you mouth-breathing dickheads tear down this kid for doing something she loves? From the trailer, the movie has a lot of potential and looks like something I would actually pay money to see. When you all get off your asses and go do something with yourselves like this girl has, then you can talk shit about her. Give me this over overblown, cynical shit like TRANSFORMERS 2 any day.

    not easy

    by faaaaah_q

it's easy to get off your ass and do something when you're a kid with no responsibilities and surrounded by people who want to help. making a film as an adult is a near impossible thing unless your family has money or you have a film degree from a recognized school. film is by far the hardest of all the arts to produce without the help of others. It is also the single lease appreciated art of all and therefore the hardest to find help (financial or otherwise) in order to produce. Unless of course you're a little girl in the internet age or your movie is a cute take on horror movies (or both)

Mortgages, Harry? SELL SOME FUCKING TOYS.

    by reflecto

Are you beginning to understand the moral of TOY STORY 3 now, or would you rather sing the "Toys 'R Us" jingle all the way to small claims court?

It's laughable to expect any of us to pony up dough for your friend when you are constantly being buffeted by "pwesents," industry people who know how to easily curry your favor with gifts and press events, and all the Amazon, etc. connections. If you are "barely getting by" after over a decade then you need to reconsider how you're operating.

As for the film, the kids and script are mildly diverting but

    by reflecto

the filmmaking is nothing discernibly special. It might as well be a YouTube webseries. Why should I pony up for this, Harry? Because you guys mistakenly think Austin and Chicago and all your buds are the center of the universe? Some of us have real work - in the field - to do.

People making films themselves, whether they are looking for funding or not. When I went to the annual Horror Film Festical here in Madison which is hosted by favorite son Stuart Gordon, I saw a TON of really great horror films. All the Evil Dead's that didn't make it beyond the festival circuit, but are just as deserving.Do a write-up on Dr. S Battles the Sex Crazed Reefer Zombies. That movie is fucking AMAZING!So instead of just reprinting everyone else's news, DO SOME JOURNALISM! If you build it, they will come!

I don't blame her for using an "angle"

    by kain_bloodstone

for raising money. You use whatever you have. She's female, she's a teen and she's pretty cute. She loves making films and she would be pretty stupid NOT to put "From teenage director..." on the trailer. BUT I can also understand the hate on this board. Watching her work I see a lot of enthusiasm but is she a prodigy? No. Do 18 year old film prodigies exist? Yes. Are they more deserving of the $$$? Yes. But they are awkward male film makers who aren't media savvy and have no friends with influence, so they can't make their films. Its an injustice, no doubt about it. But, hey, that's life. That's the real world. Learn to deal.

    Budget

    by johngaltshrugged

Anyone considered the concept that her plan just might have been to raise postproduction money in post rather than all at the start? It's much easier to raise 5k here, 10k there, than to try and get it all at once. MANY indie productions do this. It's sort of the "just keep moving forward, we're making this movie no matter what" attitude that many indie filmmakers have and most of the time its the only way to get it done in the indie world.

    by marcel_the_negro_projectionist

How amazingly insensitive at best, and passive aggressive at worst, Harry! As HumanBurrito said, most people don't even have one mortgage, let alone multiple mortgages.

What, do you want to announce to the world you're rich enough to plow $$ into three or more homes, yet you can't find it in yourself to throw this talented young girl the 5K? Really classy, Harry.

Why not offer to throw in $2,500, and challenge the Talkbackers to make up the rest, at least? Hmmm???

Not a movie I'd want to see...

    by the_floating_skull_of_robert_loggia

But not due to any lack of talent on the director's part. This just isn't my bag, dig? Thing is, so many in here are tearing this chick a new asshole, saying she's a hack, and that her movies look like rubbish. Maybe they are rubbish, but what did YOU do on your summer vacation? I had the pleasure of making a movie with a bunch of my friends about 10 years ago. It was both a HUGE blast and a shit-ton of hard work. We shot on weekends and early AM's before we each had to go to our respective jobs. We shot interior sequences from after dinner into the wee hours of the morning. Editing the thing was a nightmare (this is back when you needed to buy a dedicated video editing video card for your computer and use software designed for rocket scientists), looping audio was an adventure, and, at the end of the day, we had a really amateurish black and white, super vulgar comedy heist movie that looked every bit as crap as that description makes it sound. The thing is, I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. This girl's movies may not be Scorcese level stuff, but at least she's making them. Stop daydreaming about it, go get a camera, and shoot something. See how good your shit turns out and then come back and critique her.

    It worked

    by return_of_fett

She has now exceeded her goal in the last 2 days.I personally think that's kinda weird because it didn't look that great and she's not offering Producorial credit. At $500 you get "Sponsor" credit and at $1,000 you get "Benefactor" credit. But you aren't getting any of your money back if she ends up selling the film.Compare that to Franknson which raised a measley $495 and offered a CEDITED SPEAKING ROLE IN THE FILM!And that film showed REAL creativity. It's a real shame they have gone past their deadline now although they aren't giving up and will hopefully get the project completed.I would fully fund Franknson myself if I had the money. Check them out here:http://franknson.com

    Fair play to her

    by the_motorcycle_boy

It doesn't look a masterpiece, but kudos on actually getting something made. It's harder than it seems. People have their right to bash her, after all, she is trying to put herself forward as a real filmmaker, so it is inevitable that people will critique her by such standards. Regarding grading: Doesn't she use FCP? It has a colour grading sub-program, I believe.

I think it was Fett who suggested a regular column where AICN could show up-and-coming films from amateur filmmakers - great idea.

It is a little cheeky for Harry to ask for donations when many of his misleading reviews have parted people from their money, I'm thinking: 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull', 'The Last Exorcism', 'The Expendables', 'Piranha 3D', etc. Give us some honest reviews and we might have had some spare cash to donate.

Hey, I could sit down and write a novel in a week, we all could, if I wanted. Doesn't mean it's good though just because I did it.

I'm sure a lot of you own video cameras. Write a script and film it. It's not hard. What's hard is producing a quality product. I'm not talking about the film quality itself, I'm talking about a well written script with great characters and an intersting plot well directed.

I think Harry said once that he's helping out with bills for family members. I really didn't take his comment to mean that he has more than one home, just that he's paying for his sister's or father's rent, too. Maybe I'm wrong, though. Whatevs.

    by noahtall

I would have donated. In fact I clicked on the link intending to donate $100 and those few people who actually recognize me know I'm not a stingy person for the right cause. But I decided not to donate when I saw that Emily had gone full out PBS greedy. $250 donation just to get a copy of the movie when it is released? Like I said I would have gladly donated $100 if she wasn't giving out any goodies at all or if she was including all 3 of her movies for that amount but the whole "For only $100 you get $5 worth of merchandise and you help support this station for another year." vibe is distasteful.I'll likely buy a copy of the movie as soon as it's available and she'll get her 25 cents or whatever amount is left over after corporate greed has it's way with her artwork. But a decent donation? I'll pass Harry. Emily has gone from being needy and grateful to being greedy and ummm nateful?

Just because you can buy a camera, doesn't make you a movie-maker (I wish people would stop using Filmmaker...unless you use FILM). That's the problem....there are so many talented movie-makers out there that get lost in the shuffle in a sea of fucknest movies by people who think they're movie-makers. I've never seen one of her movies, and it looks like I never will. But, good luck to her. She'll always have Harry on her side to pimp donations. Wish I did.

    by carneguisada

What a bunch of whiny haters. Have you not seen independent films ever? I personally have been a little bit down on this chick because she's a zillion years younger than I am, gets a lot of press and I figured it was just because of her age and because she's a gurl. But this trailer actually looks really good and I'd go see the movie. Raising $5000 finishing funds isn't that much-- that means she's done a LOT on her own already and you guys whining and thinking Robert Rodriguez can kick in-- that's not what this is about. If he gave a nickel to everyone who came to him asking for a dime... Anyway. Indie Gogo et al are CROWDSOURCING sites. Get the funding from the audience. That's all. Harry's just spreading the word. It's how indie movies are funded. /> end rant

    Nice little earner

    by samwise_gamgees_scrotum

I'm guessing she's not going to college, she doesn't have any other career mapped out apart from film. If you ask me, her plan is to turn her films into a cottage industry (if Hollywood doesn't come calling which it probably won't) hence why she's charging $250 for a finished copy of her film.I am NOT a film maker, never wanted to be, so I have no axe to grind here. But this girl seems like a media creation. People are willing to dig into their pockets now, but what about when she's in her mid-twenties and still asking for donations to make her crummy films? I don't think folks are going to be this generous forever. Once the sweet teenage girl image is gone, her funds are gonna dry up.
