Ain't It Cool News (

Abrams & AICN Want To Give You A Copy Of The Very Interesting STAR WARS ART: VISIONS Book!!

Merrick here... ...with an interesting opportunity for AICN readers. We have five (5) copies of a new book from Abrams called STAR WARS ART: VISIONS to put in the hands of lucky participants. In short, the title presents interpretations of the STAR WARS universe by many compelling artists - genre-related and mainstream alike. People like: Alex Ross, William Stout, Moebius, Syd Mead, H.R. Giger, Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo, Michael Grimaldi, Anthony J. Ryder, Eric Joyner, and Gary Carter. This represents a random sampling - there are many more participants offering a number of extraordinarily realized and imaginatively conceived pieces. The book is consistently beautiful, always interesting, and frequently provocative. I've shown it to several friends (all of them "like" STAR WARS but none of them are franchise sycophants) and their response has been unanimously positive, even enthusiastic. One of them said, and I'm paraphrasing slightly here, "I either need to put this down, or stare at it all night." EMBIGGEN this cover art by Masey for a hint of the detail you'll find here.

The folks over Lucasfilm have assembled this nice trailer to tell you more about the book:

175 pages of crisply reproduced artwork presented on high quality paper, STAR WARS ART: VISIONS includes a foreward by George Lucas and an introduction by Lucasland historian J.W. Rinzler. How to attain this fine publication? Please follow the rules below precisely. In the past we've had folks unnecessarily disqualified for deviating from the simple parameters laid out herein, and we hate to see that happen! ** Sometime between the time you read this and 11:59:59 PM CST USA (i.e. one second before midnight CST USA) on Friday November 12, 2010, send an e-mail to me *****via the e-mail link below*****. ** You can enter four (4) times a day for the contest's duration. ** Include your name and mailing address in this e-mail. The address is to expedite prize shipment only and will be summarily discarded once book recipients are chosen and announced. No spam, no mailing lists, etc. ** Be sure to send from an ACTIVE (and frequently checked) E-MAIL ACCOUNT. If I try to reach you & my message bounces back? I'll trash your win and move on to the next closest winning contestant I can reach. Really not trying to be a jerk here, but I've no time to chase folks down. ** I've already pre-selected five (5) times of day between today (Tuesday November 9, 2010) and 11:59:59 PM CST USA on Friday November 12, 2010. The person who e-mails me at (or closest to) these times will receive 1 (one) copy of the STAR WARS ART: VISIONS book. NOTE: I've been asked this before, so...for clarity...I'm using whatever time is stamped on the Yahoo mailing address established for this contest as the determiner. I'm in Central Time USA, so I guess that's a CST time stamp (?) ** The five (5) recipients will be announced on this site 'round Monday November 15, 2010. ** You can only win one copy of this book. ** Contest open to U.S. and Canadian readers only. **Abrams will have have the recipients' contact information in-hand Monday morning and will be generously handling fulfillment in this contest. ** As a general FYI, you should know that...due to the number and frequency of entries...recipients in past contests were sometimes determined by matters of seconds. Literally. And that's it!

Best of luck to you. And, enjoy! We'd like to thank Abrams for making this contest possible and, as I mentioned, above handling its fulfillment. You can find their official website HERE. STAR WARS ART: VISIONS is now in stores, and is also available at a nice price HERE.

Hint: one of the pre-selected times falls before noon today.

This has to be one of the coolest projects that Lucas has ever green-lighted and all many of you can do is bitch and whine?

That shot of the pitched battle in the Hoth trench is one of the single most geek-tastic things I've seen in about 25 YEARS!

Instead of bitching why don't you just have a look at the book and then make your mind up? Of course you can't do that, you're so fucking cynical, anytime Star Wars is mentioned it's "George Lucas raped my childhood!". From what I've seen of this book in that trailer, theres more of the true Star Wars spirit than I had ever hoped to see again.

If you are too jaded and blinkered to be able to see that then your inner child is dead.

They show it in the vidio clip, and it's a rather generic looking piece for Giger. It looks like half of his New york book, below par stuff....disapointing

    Baby Darth Maul 2.....

    by Rameses

Mauls *tattoos* extend over his entire body. This is fairly common knowledge and images of a top off Maul are almost pop culture. The artist should have done a bit of research !

  • Nov. 9, 2010, 4:25 p.m. CST

    Also worth noting...

    by Rendell

Was the pic that I glimpsed of Darth and the Stormtroopers, pilots etc. illuminated blood red by his lightsaber.

Sheer. Class.

  • Nov. 9, 2010, 4:29 p.m. CST

    by secretcylon

Would baby Maul even have tattoos? I know it doesn't matter in this case but it might have been cool to see this little baby Zabrak all innocent and whatnot. Wow, I just wrote a sentence about baby Zabraks.

  • Nov. 9, 2010, 4:29 p.m. CST

    by secretcylon

    That pic was awesome.

  • Nov. 9, 2010, 4:36 p.m. CST

Only seen a dozen or so of the pics in the book...

    by Rendell

But those are enough to make me want to see the rest. Do we know how many are in the book in total?

Maybe when baby Maul growa up he looses his markings, like the spots on a baby deer. Ever think of that? Actually, I'm kinda sad that I did. Sigh. I'm also a little depressed that I know that the plural of Zabrack isn't Zabracks (sorry secretcylon). Sigh. The other children were right to pick on me in school.

...aside from the Moebius piece which I wouldn't mind seeing in real life. DARTH MAUL as A BABY?! OBI WAN in the STYLE OF VERMEER?!? NAKED ALIEN LADY?!!? OH MY GOD! PEOPLE WILL BUY ANYTHING!!!!

  • Nov. 9, 2010, 6:05 p.m. CST

    by Rendell

Thats a fair point and I'm inclined to agree (except for the Making of ESB)... which is why I think Lucas approved this project in the first place. It shows a willingness to connect with artists who can bring a fresh perspective and creativity that has been missing for a long time.

I think thats why I'm psyched by this, it seems to tap into the imagination in the way Star Wars used to do.

  • Nov. 9, 2010, 6:18 p.m. CST

    by gamerawangi

It has come to my attention that: 1) You are really bitter and a rather joyless soul with real repression problems 2) You most definitely need to get laid (and from your fantasies of Chewie, I'd say most likely by somebody on your own team) (see observation #1, above) 3) You are not yet out of high school 4) It's really fun to read your replies with the voice of the Comic Book Guy from "The Simpsons" going through my head. Good luck with that. MMMUUUUWWWAHHH toots!
