THE DIRTY DOZENTH List... BNAT 12 - BUTT-NUMB-A-THON... These folks are Mandom!

Published at: Nov. 5, 2010, 12:34 a.m. CST by headgeek

Hey folks, Harry here with the lucky, talented & ungodly enthusiastic audience members of the 12th annual BUTT-NUMB-A-THON, known as THE DIRTY DOZENTH! Films are being confirmed, goodies are being acquired for the bags, tricks & torments aplenty are being planned & prepared. But most of all, the best part of the process. The most torturous for me - picking the Audience is done. I held back some seats, like always - for "talent" and for the team members of the Drafthouse that help make all this possible... and when we found out that due to Fire Marshall rules we can't do folding chairs, that cut our audience down even smaller than any year other than our year at the RITZ. This is for everyone that applied and didn't get in, you are worthy. You are all awesome. I have to make at least 70 SOPHIE'S CHOICES every year that I do this, but with the videos and the pictures and just some of the heart and soul you people poured into these applications, I want you to know. I read them and I've watched them. I wish I could welcome all of you to this, my favorite day of the year - it'd be cool to hear what you thought worked and didn't. To share those awkward bathroom moments when we run into each other. Don't give up hope. Several folks that have never gotten in, got in this year - and I wish more could have. But... FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE ON THIS LIST... Know that you're in for the best fucking day of your year. You're going to meet friends you never would have met otherwise. You'll get in strangers cars as though they've been life long friends. You're going to see some really fun stuff - and this year, I'm really excited about - because this year will be MANDOM. As soon as we find out all the costs for prints and tricks - we'll have the ticket page opened up and ready to sell. I'll publish an alert on AICN - and we'll also email all of you to come get your tickets. NOW - if you're coming with someone and they drop out, tickets are not transferable. Unclaimed seats go back into the hamper for STAND BYS. That information will be published around a week before the event. For now - to the following 166... This is going to be an experience you're going to share with the best audience ever. In the coming weeks, I'll be posting some of my favorite Mandom videos and BNAT pics. Unfortunately, I will never publish my BNAT pic online. Because... it is pure evil. Pure. Only BNATTERS get to judge me. 1. Aaron W Dunn 2. Alan Wayne Cerny 3. Alicia Marie Rutledege 4. by Beeslo

Sigh. Rejected. Again. I have been before but only by luck via standby. I must remember that there are those who have applied as much as I have and have never gone at all. BNAT8 was still the best one in recent memory from what I've been told, so I'm happy to have that. Chances are gonna be stacked against us this year, but like always, I will be in the standby trying my luck again. Congrats to all that got in, I know some of you all are decent people.

    by Some Dude

Just got home from a trip to Austin. As often happens to me, I suffered a bit of travel constipation. At the exact moment that my backlog breached, I received a text from a friend telling me that Harry had posted the list and that we were in. BNAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nov. 3, 2010, 2:59 a.m. CST

    TheKoolAidisPoisonous

    by HEADGEEK

There's reasons for that. 4 separate applicants got in whose partners didn't get in. In each case, I didn't have an application for their partners in my folders. At that point, I either had to eliminate someone whose app I really really liked, or let them work it out with their friend. <BR><BR>Two of those were friends of mine.

  • Nov. 3, 2010, 3:04 a.m. CST

    Are you saying that

    by TheKoolAidisPoisonous

you didn't receive my application or that I didn't make the first round of cuts? Sorry, just worked so hard on my app that I've gotta know if it was a legit denial or just a cosmic "fuck you" clerical error.

  • Nov. 3, 2010, 3:05 a.m. CST

Well, I know that by going over the list back and forth for the last 5 hours, that there are 4 cases of people's app-mates not getting in - and in all 4 cases, there was no received application for their app-mates. <BR><BR>I would love to do this with everyone being an individual and no guaranteed appmates, but I would never split people if given a choice. In this case - these 4 cases... I don't know what happened, but I know in 1 case the extra didn't do their app. If you're saying you sent an app - I can say clearly - I didn't get it, because it was very easy to look down the list and find people alphabetically. The system is never perfect and if the ghost in the machine fucked you, I'm sorry - but it happens.

    Vintage Movies

    by CmdX

I've been to a few BNATs (thanks Harry!) and I have to admit, when I am actually there I loathe the vintage movies. I want to see something new and exciting damnit!! I could have watched this on Netflix!<p>Then, over the course of the next few months, I forget about the new movies and start to reconsider the vintage movies. I realize I would have never otherwise seen them and even if I had they wouldn't have been properly introduced to me like they are at BNAT.<p>Although this is not a universal rule

  • Nov. 3, 2010, 3:58 a.m. CST

    CmdX

    by SonicRiver

Agreed. It's interesting what you say about thinking about the movies months later. Just last night, I had a dream about Faust, and BNAT1138 was 11 months ago. <p> I think the power of BNAT is the mystical manifestation of forgoten memories that resurface randomly subconsiously and lovingly.

    by HEADGEEK

I watched over about 160 or so MANDOM videos. Many are unlisted. In total there were round about 700 apps. Although, until the final day, I had just 30 more apps than I needed. Then in the hours before deadline, a flood came in. <BR><BR>This was the lowest application year ever, that was due mainly to the application being perceived as tougher. Personally, most people I knew could fill out the app in very little time, but I totally respect the fact that most people haven't seen KISS ME DEADLY, I feel it is wrong that they haven't, so at least this year. There's a great film that everybody got to see that they wouldn't have seen otherwise. As for the people that all felt it was required to watch DIRTY DOZEN... it wasn't. But I'm glad y'all did, because apparently a ton of you hadn't seen it before. And all men and women that love men, should know DIRTY DOZEN. That's just a life lesson.

not getting in when you have so much competition feels a little better. I will say I think the app process has been getting harder. I think I didn't do the app for last year because I could not come up with a costume in time.

Harry - random question: for those of us that didn't get in, is there anyway that you could list perhaps who the 'Next 20' would have been if there were folding chairs this year? I'm happy for everyone that got in, but I'm just curious if I was close or not. I really put a lot of time and effort into my app. I soiled my father's army uniform in a way unimaginable and I still didn't get in, so I take my hat off to everyone that did make it in, I can't imagine what lengths you went to, haha.

Elijah Jordan Wood's <P> And <P> Rian No Middle Name Johnson's <P> application pictures, wonder if they go all out and have something amazing. Or if their pictures are just as home grown looking as others.

I can't go this year due to continued financial struggling and personal issues, but I'm happy to give up my seat to someone who will experience BNAT for the first time. With a lot of work and determination, along with a little luck and desperate prayer, I'll be back next year for the likely horrific BNAT the 13th!

Pretty sad I didn't make it this year, but the application process was fun. If it hadn't been for this I still would not have seen The Dirty Dozen or Kiss Me Deadly yet. Those are to fantastic films. Well, here is hoping for stand-by so I can have my first BNAT be the 2010 BNAT.

    The View from Both Sides

    by zteecher

I remember before there was an application process my buddy Brian and I tried to get online tickets for BNAT 2 back in 2000 but they sold out in seconds. We were bummed and started doing our own pseudo-BNATs by theater-hopping all day. Later we earned our way into BNATs 6 and 7, felt the rejection for 8 and 9, then found grace again for 10 and 11. So because getting into 12 was no sure thing we are rejoicing. To all those who didn't get in, I feel your pain and disappointment. Keep trying. Sometimes the thrill of the hunt can soften the pain of a missed shot. To those with a golden ticket, congrats and see you all there.

    wait till next year

    by jpainting

seems to be my mantra. 4 times applied, four times shot down. This year I did a photo, a mandom video, watched Kiss Me Deadly, and still nothing. Maybe it was because I said I loved Brett Ratner? And living in Austin and knowing a bunch of people attending does not help the pain heal. (I was kidding about Ratner)

    My Application

    by zteecher

    1. Eric Franklin Burgess 2. Brian Steven Day 3. My mother thought it would be too pretentious to name me Eric the Red, Conqueror of Nations, Scourge of Civilizations, so she shortened it. My grandfather’s favorite president was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, thus the middle name (this is the truth). 4. Both Arcadia, California. 5. The craziest mission I have ever been on was to show my best friend the greatest 40th birthday trip to Vegas without drinking, gambling, or strip clubs. Long story short: Alien beef jerky, profane business cards, indoor skydiving, multiple roller coasters, hotel room pranks, Frank Caliendo, an ice bar, and machine guns. The long story long: http://zteecher.com/mythoughts/brian40.htm 6. I have a crush on George Kennedy as Bumper Morgan in “The Blue Knight.” I love a man in uniform who protects the streets for law-abiding citizens. 7. I would take a punch by George Kennedy because when/if I got back up from the beating I would earn his begrudging respect and he would bestow upon me some “cool” nickname. Maybe he would even support me in an egg-eating contest. 8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rgD9h3r3W0 9. A fitting tribute to a film icon at a film festival would naturally be inclusion of one of his movies. For Dick Miller maybe even one of his rare leading roles. I suggest “A Bucket of Blood.” Not a great movie but it has the added bonus of Roger Corman. 10. When I saw “Kiss Me Deadly” I remember thinking that the sneaky bitch had it coming when she opened the case and essentially got nuked. I enjoyed it nearly as much as the Nazis getting what was coming to them at the end of “Raiders.” 11. On my last night alive before my personal Armageddon I would seductively play with animal crackers across Liv Tyler’s bare midriff, speaking in my best Crocodile Dundee accent. 12. Don’t even try to argue that Lee Marvin’s best work isn’t “The Professionals” or I’ll travel to your hometown (or foreign country for that matter), dynamite your house, kill all your friends, and take your woman. Then, just to show you that I’m a nice guy, I might even give her back. Of course, I might accept the Twilight Zone episode “The Grave” where he sticks his knife through his trench coat at his rival’s grave and dies from heart failure after being goaded into it by Rosco P. Coltrain and Angel Eyes. But you probably shouldn’t take the chance. 13. My Jim Brown fantasy begins with the future Hall of Famer joining the Cleveland Browns and being befriended by me, an over-achieving running back. Although we compete for the same spot on the team, and despite the fact that Brown is black and I am white, we become roommates on the road and very close friends, especially when Brown is injured and I help his recovery. Later, we and our wives must both deal with the harsh reality of my cancer. I envision this as (at the very least) a made-for-TV movie entitled “Eric’s Song.” 14. I love movies so much, Brian Day and I started a film club at Rosemead High School and held a 24-hour movie festival in the school auditorium the past two years. Plus, my wife sends a special birthday batch of delicious chocolate chip cookies with me to Austin just for Harry… and I don’t eat them first! 15. Vintage: Double Indemnity, Lone Wolf McQuade, Way of the Dragon Unreleased: True Grit, The Fighter, Bad Teacher 16. zteecher@yahoo.com 17. Large 18. Applied six times, accepted and attended four (6, 7, 10, 11) 19. I spent my pre-teen years glued to my Atari 2600 and Nintendo NES systems. I then hid from the trauma life offered in the dark and labyrinthine arcades during my adolescence. I found “Scott Pilgrim” and its video game to be a delightful ride of pure nostalgia that touches me more than any other special effects-laden film. At 39 years old I felt 12 again. 20. Show the first minute of Inside as a teaser, making Jeff Mahler think it made the BNAT schedule.

I know this may not be much consolation... but you do have the the Awesome Alamo all year 'round. For those of us who live in other cities/states... the Alamo is at least 47% of the reason to apply at all. Those $5 Shakes are a killer. I am super psyched to be going to one of my favorite towns in December. Looking to find hotel/motel roomies to crash with, if I can't find a local space. Find me on the BNAT facebook page, if you're interested.

Actually, I said in my app that I hate to be 'that guy' but though I liked Scott Pilgrim, I just don't get all the hype for it when there are other incredible movies this year like Toy Story 3. You don't have to agree w/Harry, or suck up to him. Bribery doesn't hurt, though :)

    My app:

    by SonicRiver

0-*-My parents are ridiculously hardcore catholics. They named me after the father of Jesus. 1-*- Melbourne, Australia. I will be travelling from Melbourne to attend BNAT.2-*-While working as a parliamentary intern I got sent to the other side of the country so that I could investigate the reason why the popular music industry seemed to be so sucessful there despite its relative geographical isolation. While there, I had a gonzo experience not unlike that described in the film fear and loathing in Las Vegas.3-*-I have a crush on all God's creatures, because Jesus lives inside them!4-*-Donald Sutherland, because I'd have a good one liner about his son to throw back at him.5-*-I was going to make one, but I ran out of time. I've enjoyed watching them on youtube though. They're great.6-*-Dick Miller should be honoured with a Roger Cormon Produced Film dealing with his many expereinces working on roger Cormon films. It should be called "Beauty on a B class budget". 7-*-My favourite moment is when Lily opens the box after shooting the Doctor. She thinks she going to be seriously wealthy, but instead, she will soon be dead. Totally get Raiders of the Lost Ark now.8-*-Before dying heroically, I would have to ring up the boys at Gear Box Software, and ask them if I could play Duke Nukem Forever once. 9-*- The Commenchero's. I'm a sucker for films where condemned prisoners escape, especially when they're well made.9-*-I feel good...Oh, you mean that other Jim Brown. Hmm. My fantasy is the one where he morphes into James Brown, Being John Malkovich style, and controls his actions during the filming of Blues Brothers.10-*-I am a total geek, love film, and am willing to spend serious cash to fly from Australia during peak travel season.11-*-The Seventh Veil (1945) - Think Red Shoes replaced with piano iconography. It's about a famous female pianist who seeks assistance after losing her ability to play piano. Trully magnificent film.Don's Party(1976) - Would love to see how an american audience would respond to this. Dead End Drive In (1986) - Would be a dream to see this at BNAT. It would be a hit with everyone. Unreleased:Tron 2. Damn I loved the original X-Men: First Class. Not going to be out till June, but i'd love to see what Matthew Vaughan could do with it. Marianne. Cool Swedish horror film that's probably going to come out next year. http://twitter.com/Eyes_only_2019 12-*-small 13-*- One submission. One Attendance. Damn it feels good to write that. 14-*-Scott Pilgrim vs the World represents reality. I personally have experienced the evil ex scenario many times, and I've never really been able to deal with it. By watching Scott Pilgrim over and over, I know everything will be fine. So long as I can get the Power of Love sword...15-*-Assuming that I had a Michael Bay level budget and was too bored to do some couch casting, I would arrange to have Michael J. Fox hand deliver to Jeff a copy of the perfect teenwolf blueray. Ideally, after persuading Jeff to give it back to him, MJF would then head down to the stage and wait for a Delorian to appear on the screen reving up to 88 mph. As it hits 88mph, a real delorian driven by eric stoltz would then crash through the screen on to the stage where it would stop. As the Gull wing doors open, and Eric Stoltz steps out, the teenwolf blueray dies as Eric confronts MJF for stealing his part. Much hilarity ensues, and Jeff remains humilated for another year.

    maybe next year

    by TheHumanBurrito

It seems that the even numbered BNATs, now that it is a "themed" thing, are my Kryptonite. The Scott Pilgrim thing killed it for me this year, since I could not answer that question without bashing the film. But hey, final nail in the Ant Man movie's grave. "Mr Wright, do you recall what happened the last time you took a D list comic with a retarded concept and tried to sell it to the public?"<p> http://img.chan4chan.com/img/2009-01-30/1233351565583.jpg
