See Test Footage For The DARKCHYLDE Adaptation From John Carpenter & WETA!!
Merrick here...
A few days ago we learned that John Carpenter should be directing an adaptation of DARKCHYLDE - based on Randy Queen's comics (available HERE
).
There's now some WETA test footage from the project on-line, which you can glimpse via the embed below.
"Even though she can turn into these evil things, she's a good person." Sounds more or less like every woman I've known. Not sure what's so special in this instance.

This is really old footage, done way before John Carpenter was part of the project.

Get rid of the girl before you really get going with this.
by mrlebowski
She's hopeless.
-
for a moment there I forgot that this is aicn. where the readers know more than the writers...
-
I am so ashamed of myself, but I KNOW I wasn't the only one thinking it...
-
when will effects guys get that people control the tips of their fingers. rubber fingers on the end of actors hands are terrible. I remember predator holding things with the middle of his fingers!
-
It'll be good to see what a world class visual stylist like John Carpenter can do with an A-class effects house like WETA at his disposal. I think that the effects in his last few films have looked a little rubbery and cheap.
-
get rid of her or make sure she is naked for 90% of this thing.
-
The only issue I have is that John's best films are the ones where he's involved in creating the story and characters, not the ones where he's just adapting someone else's material. In any case, the movie will look good.
-
Have richard taylor and Peter jackson been on the same diet? Or have they both got AIDS?
-
tits are still awesome. longest running fad EVER!!!
-
We'll never get a Preacher series but we can sure as shit get some old Top Cow McFarlane-knockoff crap on the big screen.
-
A name that you'll forget just as soon as you hear it. Carpenter just needs to retire now. He has fucked his legacy beyond repair.
-
is a classic.
-
Sure his recent stuff was medeocre at best, but here's hoping he can turn things around and make a big comeback.looking forward to his involvement with FEAR 3.
still legendary!
-
This footage has been online for months. And was likely created long before Carpenter's involvement. Someone's asleep at the wheel.
-
Saw this many months ago. Not exactly a "scoop"...
-
Go on. Give me your worst. I also like Memoirs of an Invisible Man, In the Mouth of Madness, and to a lesser extent Escape from L.A. and Vampires.
-
Not surprising that a top effect house would team with Carpenter. Even on his lower budget efforts like Village Of The Damned and Mouth Of Madness (and mid level like Invisible man), he had ILM work on the effects.
-
to be a B movie and we get Planet Terror which everyone loves, but you say this is the next film from master of horror John Carpenter and we get Ghosts of Mars(a B movie all the way)and people hate it But I think it's better than Planet Terror.
You guys say marketing has no affect on the film itself but I give you the above as an example of people expecting grade B movies and loving them and people expecting a "return to form of a great genre director" and hating it. It's all perspective and a lot of studios altering or lowering your expectations.
-
I didn't see no titties
-
even as a test, that footage looked awful and looked like any number of fan made turds you can find on youtube. The comic sucked shit and so will this. Randy Queen is a fucking hack
-
....I kind of liked it too...havent seen it in awhile but remember liking it a lot....please don't hurt me.
-
rubbish!
-
...please, JC - PLEASE - make this straight horror. DON'T make it some 'tween goth/emo bullshit.
-
When is this premiering on SyFy, again?
-
than real substance...it could be cool though. let's hope it's vintage Carpenter and less standard Uwe-Bollian.
-
anybody hear a witch?
-
please mr carpenter dont do this smoldering piece of Top cow shit.
-
I'm dying for that Mr. C.
I don't want to be negative today, but back when I saw this Weta Tease project- it just didn't do anything for me, and I was mad with myself for feeling that way, and confused over Weta excitement over it. John hows about a werewolf movie. Set in the old west, involving a pair of robbers who are attacked when trying to hijack a train. They are trapped on the train with it or a group of werewolves somehow. Robbers came to take the riches, wolfs came to take some meat. I want a John carpenter western before you go to that big whatever it maybe beyond this. And you ain't given us no werewolves either. There you go 2 in one.
-
Must have been a trick of light. No really its the colors. Too much blue, wings stand out badly.
-
Make the lead female a fat, middle aged woman...or just a fat teen woman. Just by casting that way, your bucking the norm, i.e. pretty, sexy young model in lead role. Also, the name...DARK...CHYLDE? Ooooh! I get little goth shivers from that names epic lame-ness. Truly a name that sounds like a goth teen clothing line at one of those mall shops that sell the spiked belts and wrist bracelets.
-
But I am in the minority here... However, I was watching The Thing DVD the other day and there should be some of that talent still residing in Carpenter. Awesome movie.
-
Got to be honest. Premise sounds like a grade C video game story. Effects don't look very sharp, at least not to the point where I'd release it to the net.
-
that rumored 3rd part Snake Plisken movie which was rumored a few years back?
-
and put them in the same movie together.
-
Agreed. Add Keith David. And make Sam Neill the villain.
-
... will always hold a special place in my movie heart, but Ghost of Mars made me believe his movie career is long since gone. I was embarrassed watching it.

They clearly spent a lot of time making this
by judge dredds fresh undies
look like complete ASS.

I'll always follow Carpenters work, but at this point I have zero expectation he will ever produce anything cool ever again.
-
Give me a 15 hundred dollar HD camera, and I could do better than this!!!
-
that's about all I cared about in that clip...talk about a boring little documentary snippet
-
Are you sure about that..? Did you see Ghost of Mars? Did you see Escape from L.A?
JC is a director of the time and period, he is no longer good. The Thing, They Live, Escape From NY and Big Trouble in Little China are his greats. He hasn't done anything decent since then!
-
This test footage never should have made it to the internet...it's just a "concept" shot to sell the movie with, but fanboys see it and start slagging the movie off before they've shot a single frame. Anyone who thinks this actress is the one that'll show up in the movie...put your helmet back on. They needed a good-looking woman to shoot the proof of concept stuff with. That's it. I'm a huge John Carpenter fan and this seems right up his alley, so here's hoping it comes together.
-
Just sayin'

Hire a playmate with better cans...and a different director.
by Monkey_King
Carpenter lost his edge after VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED.
-
Jesus Christ, could this be any more generic? If JC (John, not Jesus) wanted to do something, why not just pick up a good Steven King or Dean Koontz short story? Hell, why not pick up CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON back up?
On second thought, forget that. JC: just keep selling out and letting jerks remake your stuff.
But hey! Look at it this way; at least you have the blu-rays of the originals...
-
it was put there by the powers that be. It's obviously a proof of concept, we can all see that. The fact of the matter is that it's shit and trying to see what buzz they can get from people. That's why they put it on the net!
-
...of who put it on the internet, the fact remains that it should not have made it to our eyeballs. This should have been some quaint DVD extra if the movie gets made...the quality of the CG is so rough, there's no way today's audiences wouldn't reject it as shitty. Not everyone appears to understand it is proof of concept, though - with people criticizing the quality of the CG and the actress (as though that's what would end up in a film version). It's just to give execs something visual to latch onto, in a pitch meeting...they're done all the time, but don't usually make it out to the masses (for good reason). There was no way this clip could have done anything but disappoint the average fanboy (who are the only ones who would give a shit about it).
-
but then I stand by my opinion that this was released by the studios and Weta. These Concepts are usually very tightly guarded. So if it's anyones fault that everyone is bitching it's the production staff themselves. They obviously think it's good enough to release!
-
This was on the net at least a year or 2 ago. Aint it old news just got it?
-
Jesus that sucks...
-
Give him the talk about comics maybe? Like what to read and what to leave behind the toilet seat brutalized and un-bagged?
-
u gonna film a promo for funding and u choose this turd? hfs.
-
That looks like something that the ScyFy (or whatever the hell they are calling themselves now)channel would reject. And of all the cool non DC or Marvel comic properties you could choose from, they went with this bullshit "XXXXXTREEEME!!!!" 90's T&A nonsense? Blah.......

Grow the fuck up and get some Faust comics.
-
So this will probably be worst than Catwoman.
-
and looking at this thing reminded me of that film from this year which starred adrian brody and sarah polley. splice. didnt see that film.
-
Not feelin' her, just sayin
-
Since this was "test" footage I assumed she was just hired for this partiqular projeqt, but since it said something along the lines of introducing Renee Cataldo I guess John Carpenter's going to be using her too...?
-
Seriously, have any of you ever checked out the comic? Let me assure you, it's a fucking steaming of pile of vomit PLUS some runny stanky shit mixed in for good measure. The story and writing were sub-high school level and the art personified everything that was overblown and wrong about the Image era of comics, which nearly tanked the industry for being so hack-like.
And here's my guess: this footage is old, but you see Randy Queen "directing" the girl and all that. So, my guess is he personally took a boatload of cash and paid WETA to do some test footage, to try and get some kind of movie option or deal going. And just for putting the D-team of digital artists on this demo reel, since it was WETA, I'm sure Queen STILL paid out a shitload of money -- even for footage this SyFy Channel laughably bad.
And for anyone hold out hope that Carpenter is going to actually direct something good for once, you're on drugs. Anything the man has done in recent years -- even that Showtime horror series, where he directed the episodes Moriarity wrote -- were painful to watch and so workmanlike that you could tell he was phoning it in. So enjoy your HALLOWEEN and FOG and THING and BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA dvds because that John Carpenter is long gone.
-
How Carpenter is even allowed to roam the streets is a crime in of itself. Carpenter's Darkchilde will work because it will feature: jailbait, zombies, vampires, werewolfs, in 3D. Start thinking outside the box once in a while.

Escape from Earth would rock, but they will prob just remake NY

I mean really, who doesn't enjoy breasts softly bouncing...jiggling, heaving in and out with each breath...As long as they aren't Harry's, and are female, I'm good with this new trend...Now, whatever happened to Scriptgirl?
-
Seriously, if that's a legit test from WETA, they should never let it loose on the net. Everything about that test was dreadful, the direction, acting and CG were abysmal. As elsewhere stated it looks like the kind of shit produced by SyFy. There is No way in hell this should be greenlit, JC or no JC.
-
Well, I am not.
-
Anyone know if that guy who did the awesome Mortal Kombat pitch video a little while back got the gig? Because I want to know more about what's going on with that...
-
You know, I thought I'd seen this footage before. And once so many people started to point out that it actually IS old and it had been released on the web before...to drum up interest for a DARKCHYLDE film...I think it all adds up to "Starship Captain" being right. In the clip, there's so much Randy Queen directing and talking that it really does look like he was pushing this, with out of pocket money, to get his baby to the screen. Versus WETA going to him and saying "Dude! We really love your comic SO much, you just HAVE to let us cut a demo reel for you!" Not that anyone at WETA ever says "dude", but you get the point!
As for Carpenter doing this, I really couldn't care. The man hasn't been on his game for ages now. So when you combine a bad comic with shitty test footage and then toss in Carpenter for good measure, the whole thing already feels like a truly CRAPTACULAR direct to video flick.
So since I just got AT&T uVerse, I'll just wait for this thing to show up on Cinemax one night at 2 in the morning right after some babes baring their boobs in a hot tub movie. And that's assuming this stinker ever even gets that far.
-
...her shortcomings as an actress could be compensated for by her willingness to wear the pearly-white contents of my balls on her face (taking a couple of squirts in the mouth, for luck).
-

I meant to write that I have no idea where all the hatred for Ghosts of Mars comes from. There are seeds of greatness there, though unfortunately they don't come to fruition.

There was supposed to be much drama surrounding the making of that film, so I imaging JC did the best with what he had.

I Not making excuses for John Carpenter, only throwing out that when he's given the resources (as well as a minimum of interference) that he requires, oftentimes he produces great works.

http://FunnyOrDie.com/m/4tct ps that girl seemed real excited about the word dichotomy.

looks like something from a bad horror porn.
