Kevin Smith releases a teaser poster for his horror flick RED STATE!

Published at: Nov. 1, 2010, 11:59 a.m. CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Over Halloween Kevin Smith decided to dole out a treat for his fans, namely the first teaser poster for his upcoming horror flick starring John Goodman, Red State. I quite like the image. There's a lot of atmosphere to this image and when you click on it below you can see the bigger version and also Smith's notes on how it came to be. I like that the dude is using the people around him for creative input into the process instead of sending his materials to a design factory where a prepackaged marketing strategy pops out at the end if you feed it enough cash. I, for one, am very curious to see what Smith has done with this flick. Here's the poster! Enjoy!

Those who hate the poster, or his previous movies

    by V'Shael

well, this clearly isn't for you. And since the guy has stopped trying to reach a non-existent wider audience with his work, he'll be successful no matter how much bitching you do. <p> This movie is being made for 4 million. A theatrical release will see him make something like 10-12 million. If he sells the DVD rights alone, he'd make his money back. <p> In any business, if you can turn your investors 8 million profit in a year, pretty much guaranteed, you're a success. <p> And whether you like it or not, Smith has the audience that will give him that 10-12 million in ticket sales.

Mr Smith I gotz an idea

    by TheJudger

Overhead naval shot of a hot girls crotch blossum covered with a pair of "Sultry" - yes that is a "Throw Momma From The Train" quote- Sultry red panties, and then a huge black colored dildo coming towards her snatch to bad the rating system wont let it in a little. Anyways. On the dildo is a picture of the cross, which is transparent, but get this, inside the dildo is a bunch of those rotating beady thingies and they have the number 666 on them. So we see them in the cross. And under the belly button is a tattoo that says "Red State" <P> You Can Do It.

Very to the point but compelling. Enjoy most of his films anyway so i'll see this on release. There really isn't much scarier than the subject matter at hand anyway so once he used the 4 million to capture the loathsome fundamentalism spot on this'll be good

    Wait a tick

    by TheJudger

if your POV was looking at the belly button to crotch area like it was the ocean from the shore. and your eye level was just a few mm above the belly skin. You could probably get away with implying that the dildo is in vag somewhat. The Red State Tattoo would be upside down but the Cross could be right side up, so it's up to the viewer to turn the poster around so the cross is upside down but the Words Red State are readable. Some beads are all 999, some are all 666. Just thinking out loud here.

Kevin Smith is making horror movies now?

    by KilliK

i guess the fat nerd finally acknowledged that his dedicated fanbase has stopped showing even the slightest interest to his shitty movies,so he did something different,a genre horror flick to be precise which is always the most fase bet to make a hit,in the hope that he might resurrect his decaying career.<br /> <p>not that i say that because of hate,i really do like him as a person and artist and i wish him the best but i got fed up with how exaggerative the people were when they praised him as the second coming of christ when he was a newcomer director and how he greedily exploited his magnus opus Clerks property, even worse than what Lucas did with SW.<br /> <p>anyway, that's just me.

    Smiths career is fine

    by Affleckwasthebomb

Nothing he's ever directed has lost money. Even mall rats made a profit. eventually. No matter how much people hate a guy if he makes them money he'll get to work. It'll be interesting to see how Smith does. I've no idea, this is so radically different for Kev that it could go either way.

    by V'Shael

The guy gets to do what he loves for a living, he's rich, has a hot wife, can write comics when he wants. He's not beholden to any studio, and he sure as fuck doesn't need our love and approval.<br /><br />By any realistic measure, he's a success. But since his box office hasn't been particularly great, especially with Zack and Miri being the lowest grossing Seth Rogan movie to date, how else can one counter the usual spiels of how the guy has failed, is failing, will fail at another genre, etc... etc... ?

Why are Kevin Smith haters obsessed with him?

    by andrew coleman

Look at pathetic ccchhrrriiisssm listing all of these reasons to show he's not successful. Um what have you done idiot? And why are you so obviously obsessed with him? Making up bull shit to prove a point, saying his wife cheated on him, what are you a private detective? Also why is it only conservative loons are always having to prove a point? I guess as the world becomes more progressive and less white these types have lost it and feel they need to get loud and stupid to prove something? Making up some percentage about how 87% either consider themselves moderate or conservative... Well which is it? Moderate and conservative are very different so rounding them together into one stat makes no sense. It's like me saying 77% of people consider themselves Moderate or liberal... Most people consider themselves moderate idiot. And so what if tomorrow there is a shift from Democrat to Republican? Just do I don't know two seconds of research and you can see that this always happens in American politics! People are so stupid these days it hurts. But like I said pathetic people on the conservative side are scared shitless that gays can get married or that Christian values have gone down the drain blah blah blah so I guess it's time to get loud and proud, whatever. It's all getting really old. The only reason you hate Kevin Smith btw and Red State is due to jealousy, the dude is rich for making movies he wants to make and by being nerdy. So you're jealous. Move on.

This isn't ancient history, moron. The Democratic Party was the party of segregation when my parents were young. It was the Democrats who made them sit at the back of buses, drink from different fountains, attend different schools, use different restrooms and live in areas of the city that were falling apart. This isn't a hundred years ago. It was less than a generation ago. <p>When the DNC became increasingly liberal and socialistic in nature (combining democracy with Eugene Debs economic philosophy), they realized that they were a dying.</p> <p>So, they needed more diverse interest groups to obtain votes that would give them a plurality. So, overnight, the DNC went from segregation to welfare suppliers by dealing with corrupt unions and an increasingly corrupt NAACP.</p> The rest is current events.

    by edwardpenishands

is like throwing a live grenade in a building full of angry hornets. If you don’t like his movies don’t watch them. It’s not like the man is Michael Bay who just phones in his scripts. He is the first to say that he is more of an entertainer than anything else. Smodcast is great, so what if every movie he makes is Citizen fucking Kane. When you try something new there is always a chance you’ll fail. At least when you fail you don’t have to hear about it from a bunch of talkback asshole who have nothing better to do than trash someone else’s creation. Go back to your gay midget porno and get some of that frustration out of your system.

Red State IS an insulting title which is based on the flawed premise that the religious nutjobs are Conservative Republican Christians. While some clearly are, there are a lot of very violent, bigoted and insane religious nuts who are far from Conservative, far from Republican and far from living in Red States. See my above post for just a scant few examples. And Kevin Smith, you may still feel free to suck it.

    Atheists are like anybody else

    by MattmanReturns

There are asshole atheists and perfectly nice atheists (I'm somewhere in the middle). However, I don't give a fuck what someone's religion or lack of religion is. I've got bigger concerns in my life. I just don't believe in God. I've got plenty of friends who do though, and I'm respectful of that.

Some atheists are so obsessed with proving others wrong that they enter this category. Extremists come in every shape and size, sadly.

    I know a guy who's extremist atheist.

    by Audio_of_Being

He is one of those ones who has to be right about atheism to the point where it's actually embarassing, even for me being an atheist. I have a feeling Red State might leave me feeling the same way....

    by MattmanReturns

I hate when an extremist agrees with me. IMO belief/disbelief is more of a personal choice and I don't really need to shove it in people's faces, nor do I want it shoved in mine. Discussions are cool, but when it turns into "YOU'RE WRONG, I'M RIGHT!" it just gets ridiculous.

    Stalin

    by boyalien

Five minutes of internet searching: "Joseph Stalin was raised to be a Catholic Priest and I remain curious as to why his Christianity is shoved aside in all these arguments. Yes, there is no way to get around the fact that in his early career, Stalin made a vast effort to rid Russia of religion, but that had nothing to do with atheism. It was the only way he knew to seize power of the country. For generations the entire populace of Russia had been taught that the head of state was supposed to be close to god. At the time in question, the head of the church in Russia was a tyrant. The Russians were already disposed to servility and all Stalin did was exploit these two facts, and place himself in the position of god. Once Stalin was firmly seated in office, he revived the Russian Orthodox Church in order to intensify patriotic support for the war effort. Stalin was part of a council convened to elected a new church Patriarch. Then the Russian theological schools were opened, and thousands of churches began to function. Even the Moscow Theological Academy Seminary was re-opened, after being closed since 1918. So, while Stalin was no peach, he was not exactly what you would call a died-in-the-wool atheist. He was more a secular minded religious opportunist, which is a personal character trait. He did not use atheism to gain control, but religious principles that were modified to fit his own, sick and twisted method of revolution."

    by Lang The Cat

Clearly many of the people here have dropped to the level of just making personal attacks on Mr. Smith. Instead of offering valid artistic criticism of his work, most are picking on his weight or life? These guys are truly sad. If you don't like KS's films, cool. If you feel he has fallen short of his talent, great. If you feel you have to drag his marriage or weight into it, you are clearly just jealous keyboard jockeys who have to make do with photoshopped pictures of the girl in your history class while you wank yourselves into next week. Grow a pair with some hair on it and make valid criticism. <br> There is certainly fodder for the fire. Mr. Smith agrees with you on that. I would really like to see him do a comic book film since both Widening Gyre and Green Hornet were good books.

THE WALKING DEAD SUCCEED'S WHERE GEORGE A. ROMERO HAS FAILED!!!

    by CreepyThinMan1978

CreepyThinMan here…..<br> <br>I fucking LOVE Horror and Zombies are my most beloved sub-genre. I’ve watched, read and played about everything to do with the living dead while my three top movies would be Return of the Living Dead (1985), Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Zombie (1979), my favorite music video of all time is Thriller and the first three Resident Evil games proudly sit on my shelf along side my copies of Book of the Dead: The Complete History of Zombie Cinema by Jamie Russell and World War Z : An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. <br> <br>I will watch ANYTHING involving Zombies from beginning to end, even the lowest of low budget shit such as The Video Dead, unlike certain limp wristed pansies that write for this site. I just never get tired of the living challenged and their dietary needs. <br> <br>IMHO this has been the decade of the zombie as more living dead flicks have been made then at any other time, particularly with major studio backing in some cases. This was spurred on by the release of the first Resident Evil movie, 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead followed by the Dawn of the Dead remake and, the genre’s creator, George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead. It seems that, everywhere you look these days, zombies are everywhere. There was even one as President of the United States from 2001 to 2009 *smirk*. There are also “zombie walks” that have taken place in various cities where people dress up and stumble about all in good fun. <br> <br>The Walking Dead is a comic book series created by Robert Kirkman, with art by Tony Moore and then Charles Adlard who took over from issue #7 onwards, that has been adapted as a TV series by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist) who also scripted the entire six part series while Directing the first episode called Days Gone Bye of which this review refers to. <br> <br>There are only two eras in Horror as far as I’m concerned; Pre-Night of the Living Dead and Post-Night of the Living Dead. What Romero’s movie did was drag Horror away from the castles and crypts of Old Europe and placed it firmly in Middle America of the late 1960’s. Not only did he practically invent his own genre but he also cemented NOTLD’s reputation as an uncompromising Horror masterpiece by ramming the audiences face into an unrelentingly nihilistic vision of death where there is no hope and no one survives. It still makes me smile when I think of Roger Ebert’s review of NOTLD where he describes how he sat in a theatre filled with kids who had been left there by their parents, probably while off to do some shopping, who thought that their children were going to watch some silly monster movie. He tells of 9 year olds crying because of the sheer terror they were experiencing and when I think of that I can’t stop laughing. <br> <br>Later Romero created yet another zombie masterpiece in 1978, Dawn of the Dead, which has gained more relevance with each passing year with its satirical subtext of the zombies representing mindless consumerism. Day of the Dead is the Return of the Jedi of Romero’s zombie series and, just like Lucas, it represents the beginning of a downward trajectory in the overall quality of the series. Romero’s mistake, IMHO, with Day was that he placed the events too far into the future, after the initial resurrection of the dead. By this time the characters have been living with this for so long that they are used to it, so there was no where to go dramatically which is why Romero felt he needed to create dramatic tension with the annoying and obnoxious military bitches who do nothing but act like complete and utter fucking assholes to such an extent that you have to wonder why the more reasonable characters didn’t just take off in the helicopter and not come back? <br> <br>Then there is Bub, the “zombie with a soul” who, under observation, shows that he has some memory of his former life and basic emotions as in evidence of his outburst at the discovery of Dr. Logan’s death. This plotline was an obvious indication that Romero himself was becoming less interested in his human characters. The real mistake is that Romero started to put forward the idea that the zombies were somehow “evolving”. That concept never jived with me as I feel these things are nothing more then motorized chunks of rotting flesh looking to sink their teeth into something much like the shark in Jaws. The true flaw in the Romeroverse is his characters lack of pathos and real human emotions apart from fear and terror. <br> <br>IMHO, I wish Romero had modeled Day of the Dead on those nuclear holocaust movies of the 1980’s such as The Day After, Threads and Testament. Make it an ensemble piece that showed ordinary life before the dead came back to life and focus on the human drama of characters trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world surrounded by the living dead at every turn. <br> <br>With the first episode of The Walking Dead, Kirkman and Darabont have made the type of zombie movie that can stand with the best of them. They emphasize their characters attempts to survive and focus on their humanity, even extending that towards the zombies themselves who are regarded with pity and sadness, acknowledging that these were once people who lost their lives, while also reminding us that they are dangerous and not sad eyed puppies like Bub was. <br> <br>Sheriffs’ Deputy Rick Grimes is shot in the line of duty and wakes up some time later in a hospital, an obvious nod to 28 Days Later (itself a homage to Romero’s living dead series), and is confronted with the horror’s of this new world. Corpses everywhere and the look of terror on Grimes face is palatable. British actor Andrew Lincoln does a great job here, really sells the characters fear and his southern accent is fine without overboard. His first confrontation with one of the walking dead is the park zombie, a female corpse that is badly decomposed with its lower half missing. It’s an instant classic make-up job (supervised by Greg Nicotero of KNB) that uses CGI sensibly while the actress cast really makes you both sympathies and fear her character. <br> <br>Grimes goes to his home to find his wife and son gone and soon comes into contact with Morgan Jones, and his son, who are hold up in one of the abandoned houses on Ricks street. They relate to Rick what happened and explain a few of the old tropes about the walking dead, don’t get bit, get them in the head to put them down and although they might seems pathetic on their own, don’t let yourself get stuck in a corner with a bunch of them near by, a mistake that Rick makes at the end of the episode. But it seems the father (well played by fellow Brit Lennie James) has his own burden as his wife (who had been bitten-died- and came back) is wandering around the neighborhood because he didn’t have the heart to put down the mother of his child. This is exactly the type of wrenching human drama that is otherwise missing from Romero’s comic book styling’s and makes The Walking Dead all the better for it. <br> <br>Rick decides to go to Atlanta, where Jones relates that there were broadcasts promising shelter and safety in the initial days of the outbreak, as it seems logical that his wife and their son would have gone there. Rick, Jones and his son head to the police station and stock up on weapons and ammo. Jones stays behind to take care of his wife while Rick goes forward but not before taking care of some business himself. I’m not going to go further, as I don’t want to ruin what happens when Rick makes the mistake of letting himself get surrounded by zombies, but it’s very cool and sets up the next episode. <br> <br>Overall, I have to say that, even on its own, The Walking Dead : Days Gone Bye stands as one of the best piece’s of zombie related entertainment since Charlie Brooker’s absolutely fantastic Big Brother-reality TV Brit series Dead Set (if you haven’t seen it DO SO NOW!). The writing and performances are very good and Darabont manages to create very solid mood and atmosphere while delivering plenty-o-gore, more then you’d expect for television. I’m also relieved that he has toned down the use of hand held shakey cam that, IMHO, was one of the things that brought down his adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist. He picked up this technique from working on The Shield and thankfully has dialed it back towards more artfully composed framing while correctly sprinkling a little bit in here and there when it’s called for, specifically in moments when you need a frenetic action to create the kinetic visual energy of, say, being surrounded by hundreds of zombies. <br> <br>Anywho, my only worry at this point is that the rest of this six episode series won’t live up to the quality of Days Gone Bye. Darabont has scripted the entire series while the other five episodes are being Directed by Ernest R. Dickerson, Guy Ferland, Gwyneth Horder-Payton, Michelle Maxwell MacLaren and Johan Renck with Dickerson being the only person with any solid genre credits being that he Directed Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, which I think was a pretty solid little movie back in the day. What all of them have in common is their extensive work in television drama’s which makes sense as Darabont is clearly putting emphasis on creating a series that doesn’t rely simply on action and violence but, instead, focuses on the human condition of people trying to survive and retain their humanity in a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies and Horror’s of the human heart.

None of the extremists should ever be allowed to define the entire group of people they're identified with. I said at the outset of the last post: Five minutes of internet searching. Essentially, I immediately made it clear that I wasn't citing sources or composing a goddamned thesis. The point, obviously, is that if you simply google "Stalin atheist" you get hundreds of thousands of hits all debating the issue, whether he was truly an "atheist," how atheist was he, what does it have to do with who he was and what he did, and on and on and on. Scholars debate the issue. People whose sole job is to study history argue the issue. Also, random dudes with blogs talk about it. It's not fucking black and white. And anyway, in the end, DarthSaul666 is right, the religion or lack thereof of DICTATORS has nothing do with the idea of extremists and extremism. Extremists are, by definition, outsiders. Calling a true dictator an "extremist" is just an insult to dictators. Those fuckers murder EN MASSE. Those fuckers aren't atheists, they're PSYCHOTIC. There is quite a large difference.

Smith has never made a film that mass audiences have been interested in. I read his big spiel about Red State, and his absurd claim that it will be scarier than Jaws. Does he actually think that he can capture people's imaginations with a subject like this? It's just that 70s Peter Fonda devil worshipping movie, Race With The Devil, but with bible-bashers. He has an inflated opinion of his own abilities. Talks a big game, but can't deliver.

What's wrong with wanting limited government and less taxes?

    by Snake Foreskin

Why are Tea Party activists considered extremists and radicals for wanting to limit the role of government and make sure taxes aren't skyrocketing and the deficit doesn't bankrupt future generations of Americans? Since when is it radical or fanatical to expect government spending to be held to a responsible and feasible level?<p> Now if they were rallying for turning babies into dogfood or lynching the mentally handicapped, then you might have a point. in his new dvd, smith makes fun of his obesity. not only that but he mentions that michael parks (who gets killed by tarantino at the start of from dusk till dawn) is the star of the movie. he also states, but in these words, that he doesn't feel like he can do movies like clerks, dogma, mallrats, etc anymore. he can't relate to the characters. it's his reason for finally branching out and directing stories done by others. it's why he did zack n miri and cop out.

Does anyone know how he submitted this to Sundance?

Considering the LATE deadline for submissions was back in September? (The 24th, I believe.)
