Maybe this will be my year...

  • Oct. 21, 2010, 11:52 p.m. CST

    And, I must say...

    by mrbrotatohead

Even if I do not get approved... that application has been alot of fun to prepare for. Mandom? Really? I will never live down the Youtube clip I just posted.

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 12:13 a.m. CST

You did awesome, especially that eyebrow raise at the end. killer!

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 12:27 a.m. CST

what is the final submission day?

    by Chojinlocke

I'm still getting my photo together...

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 12:36 a.m. CST

and I publish the winners on November 1st at some point.

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 12:39 a.m. CST

    by Chojinlocke

I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a cutoff date before then for decision making purposes. Everything else (including video) is all prepared!

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 12:44 a.m. CST

    Is there any way...

    by BGDAWES

...I can get back all of the hours I spent applying to past BNAT's and *not* getting in?

Capone - can you hold your own BNAT at the Music Box? Harold hates anyone that doesn't live in Austin.

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 12:50 a.m. CST

    BGDAWS...YES!!! I LOVE that idea!!!

    by ShiftyEyedDog2

There's just no way I can travel to Austin in December. Summer, yes. But not December. So why not do a BNAT in Chicago?!?? I swear I would go every single year if I could. I'd even do what I could to help organize or run it. PLEASE make this happen!!!

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 4:01 a.m. CST

    by Bob Loblaw Law Blog

Half the fun is just going for broke when you apply. Harry's a cool guy and I know he appreciates when people let loose and have fun. That's what BNAT is all about!!
One of my favorite small moments from BNAT last year was the pajama contest we had. Sure, I lost out to the guy in the way cool King of All Wild Things outfit... but I got to spin around in my Super Mario pajama pants/shirt combo, as seen here:
Those kind of memories are priceless! Awesome effort on the MANDOM video!! MAAAAAANDOM!!! :)

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 5:47 a.m. CST

    Yay it's up!

    Now to dive in!

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 7:50 a.m. CST

    by Fone_Bone

Harry, awesome application. I had a great time filling it out. I've been working on my answers since the day you posted the questions. My Mandom video was absurd... Though I think my wife helped lend to the authenticity of the video.

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 9:16 a.m. CST

    by rodnunley

My friends and I have spent the last week killing ourselves trying to come up with the best pictures that we can. I think we've hit upon something cool, unique and pretty damn awesome. Can't wait to see it all come together.

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 9:33 a.m. CST

    scott pilgrim sucked ass

    by lostboytexas

and due to my outstanding commitment to honesty I will be unable to fill out that submission form

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 9:50 a.m. CST

    by mrbrotatohead

Sure you can. Just modify the question a bit. There are several movies that I have seen in my life that I hated, but I consider awesomely rewatchable... like Super Mario Bros., Mortal Kombat Annihilation and Batman and Robin. Now, I personally loved Scott Pilgrim, so that didn't apply to me, but... to each their own.

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 10:29 a.m. CST

mrbrotatohead - a flaw in your advice

    by ShiftyEyedDog2

He can't use that approach to explain its awesome rewatchability, because the minute one negative word is said about Scott Pilgrim, Harry will immediately eliminate him from consideration. The question being asked on the application alone basically says Harry only wants SP fans there. Kind of a shitty criteria if you ask me.

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 11:36 a.m. CST

    What is the exact deadline?

    by Beeslo

11:59PM on October 30th? 11:59PM on October 31st? When you say Halloween...what is the exact deadline?

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 11:51 a.m. CST

    by Bob Loblaw Law Blog

In the past, it's been before midnight on the due date. So, unless Harry says otherwise, before 11:59 p.m. CDT (cuz he lives in Austin, you know) would be a good time to get that sweet app submitted!!

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 12:18 p.m. CST

when do you start choosing winners...

    by HordePrime

Is there any favor shown to people who submit early?

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 1:06 p.m. CST

    by mrbrotatohead

He says that there isn't, because he wants thought put into the answers! I will probably submit early just to make sure everything goes well. I am currently watching Kiss Me Deadly... holy balls! My mind is blown so far!

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 1:13 p.m. CST

    The Mandom video...

    by HordePrime

last question, do we have to be IN the Mandom video or can we sing over some filmed images?

  • Oct. 22, 2010, 2:34 p.m. CST

    by mrbrotatohead

Well... *breathes out*... I just submitted my application! Best of luck to everyone! The wait until November 1st is going to be unbearable.

  • Oct. 23, 2010, 12:24 p.m. CST

it is extra credit, you can do it however you wish.

  • Oct. 23, 2010, 12:30 p.m. CST

    my process...

Basically, As the BNAT applications come in - I begin putting folks into 3 different folders... NO WAY, MAYBE, WINNER... Most go into MAYBE. But outstanding applications and my personal friends go straight into Winner.

for Example - right now there's 6 people in the WINNER folder - I only know two of them. That said, until November 1st when I announce, it can change, people can be moved from Folder to folder due to whimsy.

  • Oct. 25, 2010, 10:24 a.m. CST

    by Fone_Bone

The wait is brutal...Some pretty good Mandom videos up on Youtube. Realistically, my chances are slim to none considering the sheer number of applicants -- but I still worked harder on Harry's application than I did for my grad school application. I think my only hope is to have been placed into the 'winner's' folder upon first viewing...The 'maybe' folder seems like a purgatory I will never escape from. Hopefully my video and answered questions set me apart.

  • Oct. 25, 2010, 4:49 p.m. CST

    by mrbrotatohead

That's what I'm talking about! It was a blast! Had you seen Kiss Me Deadly before this app? I am unashamed to admit that I hadn't, but have watched it through twice since working on my app! Love it! I am kinda jealous of Harry. The dude gets to sift through a ton of these, and read everyone's excitement. Then again... I don't envy having to make the tough choices. I keep checking the talkback, thinking there will suddenly be an early list of winners. I may be obsessed. Please help. :-)

    Harry - serious question

    by ahughes8491

Does full frontal male nudity increase or decease our chances when it comes to the video?

  • Oct. 26, 2010, 12:52 a.m. CST

    @ ahughes8491

    by Beeslo

Considering you have to post this on YouTube first, I don't know if you can get away with full frontal for too long until it gets taken down. Perhaps upload it at the last second and hope Harry sees it (if he really wants to) before it gets pulled.

    Toughest Question

    by honestlylincoln

The toughest question for me was picking out the six movies. I didn't pick out my favorites or what I thought I would see. I ended up picking out the movies that I would show if BNAT was mine. I have no idea if that was the right approach. I think that if anything gets me in, it will be my answer to why I deserve to get in.

  • Oct. 26, 2010, 4:42 p.m. CST

    Toughest question

    by mrbrotatohead

Yeah, the movies were rough. I ended up just going all out, and listing my dream lineup. I am not even sure if some of the movies I listed are done shooting yet... but hey... It's not like a workprint has never screened at BNAT, right? :-)

  • Oct. 26, 2010, 4:57 p.m. CST

    by mrbrotatohead

Harry's MANDOM video is posted! I don't want to spoil the surprise, but those props are pretty awesome... Well done, fearless leader!

  • Oct. 26, 2010, 5:08 p.m. CST

    My Lineup

    by honestlylincoln

I will go ahead and post my lineup- it isn't like anyone would pick the same films. I actually picked a vintage film to complement the modern films. Tron 2 (Starman), Drive Angry (Run with the Devil), The Rum Diary (Where the Buffalo Roam)

  • Oct. 27, 2010, 3:21 p.m. CST

HARRY: PLEASE STOP saying fucking GIGGLE

    by Dreth

OMFG. Harry- seriously, you HAVE to stop saying (typing, whatever)the word "GIGGLE." Seriously. You come across as a pedophile. It's very uncomfortable to hear a grown, straight man, especially a fat one, use that word. I know your raisan d'etre is shameless self-indulgance, but seriously bro, you are going too far. Being a self-proclaimed "geek" and wearing the badge proudly is not a valid excuse. Lest you think I'm a random troll, I've followed the site since Fellowship of the Ring was begun, around the time you had pictures of Bag End on the site. Please, please, PLEASE, stop saying "giggle."

    Getting closer...

  • Oct. 28, 2010, 7:58 a.m. CST

As much as I would love to attend,

    by V'Shael

I can't be arsed filling in such a inane questionnaire just to have the chance of getting a ticket.

Questions like how would you humiliate some Jew I've never heard of, or Why is Scott Pilgrim awesome? (Never saw it.) Your Jim Brown fantasy? (Who?) Why do you have a crush on GEORGE KENNEDY? (Again, who?)

Combined with requests for embarrassing youtube videos and photos of crime re-enactments... what do you really want from your audience? A bunch of American X-Factor contestants? Or people who love movies?

• Oct. 28, 2010, 10:28 a.m. CST

    by Fone_Bone

I guess since Harry is looking for the biggest movie fans, it's safe to assume that if you haven't seen Scott Pilgrim or don't know who George Kennedy is, then you're probably not one of the biggest 200 film fans around. And Jim Brown is arguably the greatest RB of all-time. The embarrassing videos and photos are to separate the casual film fans from the die-hard fans. After all, if movies were that important to you, wouldn't you do everything you could to attend the most significant film festival in the country? That's my take on BNAT anyway.

  • Oct. 28, 2010, 10:37 a.m. CST

    Believe it or not Fone_bone....

    by V'Shael

there are probably plenty of non-Americans who couldn't tell you who Jim Brown is, or who George Kennedy is, or who didn't bother to watch Scott Pilgrim (after so many many sites featured poor reviews).

Harry claims he wants half the tickets to go to people from around the world? What's the point of that, if they have to be so utterly US-centric?

I googled George Kennedy after the fact, and recognised him from a bunch of movies. The ones that sprang immediately to mind were the Naked Gun series, though.

  • Oct. 28, 2010, 11:57 a.m. CST

    Hey Fone_Bone...

    by WhimsicalMagic

Are you really trying to tell me that BNAT is more significant than the Tribeca? or Sundance? Or New York?

  • Oct. 28, 2010, 12:41 p.m. CST

    V'Shael... WhimsicalMagic

    by Fone_Bone

You're right, many non-Americans probably don't know who Jim Brown is. But since the theme is Dirty Dozenth, assuming they've seen The Dirty Dozen, then they should know who Jim Brown is. And again, since the theme is an American film, most of the questions are US-centric. I do agree, though, that he could have thrown in a question or two about foreign films. Regarding BNAT vs Tribeca/Sundance etc. Over the course of 24 hours, yes, I think BNAT is more significant than those festivals. Sundance lasts ten days and celebrates only recently made films, whereas BNAT is a combination of old, new, and unreleased. Some vintage films shown at BNAT might not ever been seen again on the big screen. Maybe I'm alone on this, but I know that I would rather attend BNAT than one day at any of the film festivals you listed.

  • Oct. 28, 2010, 3:15 p.m. CST

    celebration does not equate significance

    by WhimsicalMagic

Sundance, Tribeca, etc. are more significant because they showcase small and independent films and give starts to up and coming directors. They help small films find distribution. Simply because you would rather attend BNAT than another festival, it doesn't mean its more significant/important.

  • Oct. 28, 2010, 3:33 p.m. CST

    BNAT vs. Sundance/Tribeca

    by ahughes8491

These all have different benefits, there is no reason whatsoever to argue what is more significant or important. BNAT is a celebration of all things film and all of the wonderful aspects of it. That includes the past, present, and future. Sundance and Tribeca gives movies distribution deals, gets Oscar buzz going, and generally it is a place people go to make deals for future movies. They both are significant in the industry, but they are vastly different from one another. There can be no denying that BNAT is by far a more enjoyable experience than anything at Tribeca or Sundance.

  • Oct. 28, 2010, 5:39 p.m. CST

    A few things!

    by mrbrotatohead

Man, people are getting really riled up on this talkback! I thought I would chime in with a few thoughts... First, if you find the application to be inane and useless, than it is certainly your right to not fill it out! I found the diversity and, let's be honest, random nature of some of these questions to add to the charm of the application as a whole! As I stated before, even if I am denied a chance to attend BNAT, I sure won't regret filling out the app because it was FUN! If you don't see anything there that might make you smile a bit when you are answering it, then don't do it. We won't be mad at you... ok, maybe a little... As for where BNAT stacks up in comparison to other film festivals... I think ahughes8491 hit the nail right on the head. They are all so different, and have unique goals in and of themselves. Is Sundance better than BNAT? I suppose for some it may be, especially if the goal is to sell a movie, or get a film on the radar of the academy. Is BNAT better than Tribeca? If you just want to have a balls to the wall good time at the movies, and dive headfirst into a marathon designed by a supergeek to melt your brain with awesome sauce, then HELL YEAH it is. It is all subjective. All of that being said... I can't wait to see what Harry has in store this December. Whether it is with me in attendance (fingers still crossed)or through the window that my computer monitor allows me. That's all I've got, folks.

  • Oct. 28, 2010, 6:15 p.m. CST

    Very True

    by Fone_Bone

The problem with forums is that it's easy to seem riled up when you actually aren't. You're all definitely right, you can't compare BNAT to Sundance, Tribeca, etc. because they serve different purposes and appeal to different crowds (not to say that there aren't crossovers). For me personally, BNAT would be more significant than those other festivals. Though, it's hard to argue something so subjective. Anyway, it's all about the movies!

    by Beeslo

Man. Every year I tell myself the same thing. Don't get worked up about BNAT this year, it will only end in heartbreak. But damnit, I can't quit you!!! I will have to say though, this has definitely been the most fun I've ever had filling out the application. From the picture, to the mandom videos to the questions themselves. Good stuff. Look forward to see what my entry yields. Question, were we to receive e-mail confirmation that the submission was received? I always worry that it wasn't received. In fact that happened one year. All I got was a message on the site that said "Thank you for your submission. We will post a list of accepted entries on the site." Should I expect more? Or am I good?

  • Oct. 30, 2010, 8:17 a.m. CST

Truthfully I also come up blank on a few of the questions and never saw "KISS ME DEADLY". Again I must apologize to you Harry for my failure and only hope to vindicate myself next year. P.S. Looking forward to the drive from Miami to Austin for standby line. How's that for a crazy mission.
