Sex!! Drugs!! Rock & Roll!! Blue Jeans!! Teenagers!! A Trailer For MTV’s New Scripted SKINS!!
I am – Hercules!!
While it’s getting its biggest ratings in years from “Jersey Shore” and “Teen Mom” (both spin-offs of the channel’s documentary anthology “True Life,” if I’m not mistaken) MTV wants back into the scripted game.
“Skins,” clearly a scripted effort, hits MTV in January. It seems to be about fast-living teens. I think it might be a remake of a British show.
It already looks better to me than that show about the nerd with the giant weiner.

That's a new one.
-
NOT saying SKINS was fresh, original, or well-acted, but its NOT Degrassi either!
-
Just go on Netflix and watch the first two british seasons. They're great.
-
I'm a fan of the original show. I had been under the false impression that the American version of Skins would surround an original cast of characters -- which fits fine with Skins' multi-generational format. (If you've watched it you'll know what I'm talking about.) This... this: an actual American remake of season one... is stupid. And a major disappointment. It's just not what I thought they were up to.
-
I said the same thing about the US version of the Office, and apparently after Season 1 it actually became a good show. I attribute most of that to Steve Carell. But Carell isn't in this - so I think it's fair to say this is one of those remakes that; looks shit, and will stay shit. MTV will be trying to market this to a demographic packed full of digital natives - who have already seen the UK version either by torrent. Which means they will no doubt be disappointed by how unauthentic it is. The whole appeal of Skins is that it holds some sort of cultural authority. You can see MTV just doesn't "get it" by just looking at how they have cast the show - Stanley?!? Way to fuck a good show MTV. They should have just aired the UK version - cheaper and of better quality.
-
Having seen the first two seasons, I must say that those few minutes watching the "preiew", sucked! Bad acting AND casting. Shame MTV.
-
From that preview it looks like an almost word for word, shot for shot remake of the original show. The Office at least went in a different direction. This show will tank, and deservedly so.
-
but then again, the British version is awful as well. I won't be watching.
-
By comparison. The Brit show ruled while the EmptyV version will have Chris live happily ever after. Kaya I'm waiting.
-
It's still on?!
-
it actually got pretty damn hilarious in the second half...before that seriously wtf finale
-
They won't get it, the original was too mature/adult, and they are going for a direct remake of the same plots, scenes and jokes.

Idiots.
-
the characters break into a rendition of Cat Steven's "Wild World" and do a play titled "Osama: The Musical".
-
Look, they can greenlight as many crappy reality and scripted shows featuring shallow, useless, stupid, lazy characters and bad role models all they want. I just wish they would change the name of the network. MTV in it's current state is raping my childhood memories of when it was a truly groundbreaking, innovative, exciting network. Now it's just shit.
-

I'm probably wrong, but wasn't The Office pilot almost a word-for-word remake as well?

When I first watched Skins I wondered how they would change the characters and settings if they were to make an American version. Guess I'll find out now.

not the first time an american show was based on a british one
by RealDoubleJ
Everyone has already called upon the money-making God that is the Office format but does anyone remember the American Fawlty Towers? Anyone laid eyes on the US Pilot of Red Dwarf?? Or, as a twist, has anyone seen the British version of Married...With Children?! *shudder* Now I'm going to hold up my hand & say I very much enjoyed British Skins well, up to series 2...then I felt too old for the new cast & far too attached to the old. I wish success for a Yankee Skins but the key success for the original program was the quality of acting they got from such a young cast. Putting children into adult situations is atypical but incredibly hard to pull off in that you believe the emotions you see cause everyone knows...80% of child actors can't act. They just look cute. As a warning, try and track down info on the american/canadian version of the saturday morning T4 cult hit that was 'As If' and see how it all fell apart based on who was cast.
-
.... that all of the shows you mentioned are 'scripted' to a certain extent?
-
Why not just re-air on MTV...missed opportunity.
-
It's a seminal series. UK TV isn't all Doctor Who and Stephen Fry you know.
-
have any other americans discovered "the inbetweeners" on BBC America? it is so damn funny i had to buy a regionless dvd player so i could watch the seasons. apparently they're shooting an american pilot for that too... when they should really just rerun the originals.

Did anyone here actually watch The Hard Times of RJ Berger?
by Grammaton Cleric
It was a slightly above average teenage sex comedy....but...[BIG SEASON FINALE SPOILER]...A girl pining for RJ all season is hit by a bus and in hospital; a scenario that was initially played for laughs. Then, in the final episode, RJ has an epiphany that this comatose girl is "the one" he should be with. He goes to the hospital and has sex with her WHILE SHE IS COMATOSE. Then...she flatlines and dies shortly after?!? It was a weirdly super dark ending to a goofy, light hearted series. It felt oddly transgressive, which is supremely strange for an MTV comedy.

You Tube, Skins, Love. MTV, Skins, SUCK.

was a breath of fresh air.

purplemonkeydw - Skins isn't on the BBC in England...
by LordPorkington
It's on E4, which is an off-shoot of Channel 4, the channel that brought us the brilliant Spaced and Brasseye. Unless you meant BBC America? In which case, that's totally different because they show stuff that isn't on the BBC.
-
If you want to check them out. It's a great show. The fourth series gets really depressing and ends with a complete wtf though. This trailer makes it look like the American version follows a lot closer to the plot of the first series than I would have guessed. Strangely, the dialogue here sounds a lot dumber to me without the British accents. Not sure about the actors, but will give this a chance.
-
isn't this thing like 5 years old?
-
both are a load of bbc3 style bollocks.
-
but it doesnt look like they've even bothered to adapt this to a new setting. complete rehash, plot doesnt seem to have changed at all.... why bother??
-
it's a great show, especially with the first cast. Oh well, more signs that the guys and galls at the top are out of touch with us viewers.
