Cool News
Quint knows what Don Coscarelli's new movie is! And more importantly he knows Paul Giamatti and The Kurgan are in it!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with an exciting bit of news for you folks.
Don Coscarelli, the director of the Phantasm films and, more recently, Bubba Ho-Tep has a new feature currently shooting. He’s been leaving some cryptic (all puns intended) messages on his newly formed Twitter account (@DonCoscarelli) and I’ve got the scoop on what that is and who’s in it!

It’s been known for a little while that Mr. Coscarelli has had the rights to the novel JOHN DIES AT THE END, written by Cracked.com’s David Wong (real name Jason Pargin), but what hasn’t been so widely known is that Don’s been covertly filming the movie.
The film is about two twenty-something losers who gain extra sensory perception via a substance called Soy Sauce, a black liquid that acts like a potent drug, but seemingly has a mind of its own. They see a lot of crazy shit… mustaches ripping off of people’s faces, a monster made of cold cuts and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
John Dies At The End is a great book, laugh out loud funny and bizarre. It’s like Terry Gilliam wrote a Douglas Adams story in the vein of Ghostbusters.
I highly recommend picking up a copy of the book if you enjoy reading things that are good.

Or you can wait for the movie and let it wash all over you that way, you illiterate bastard.
If Don Coscarelli isn’t enough for you (shame on you) let’s add two names to this list: Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown.
Giamatti plays a reporter the lead character is telling his story to and Brown is a supernatural expert who really knows what he’s doing, not like the clueless kids trying to fight the forces of evil. Giamatti’s also producing the film with his producing partner Dan Carey alongside Brad Baruh and Coscarelli himself.
The two leads are played by newcomers Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes. I was on set for two nights and will have my set report to you as soon as they give me the greenlight, but I will say I liked these guys together and if what I saw was any indication of what the final film is going to end up being you’ll be hearing a lot about both of these guys in the future.
So, there you have it. Don Coscarelli is behind the camera again and he has Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown doing his bidding!
Don’t think I’d leave you with just boring old words. Not me. I’m a visual guy! Here’s a shot to tease you a little.

I’ll be back with more on the flick as soon as I’m able!

Second!
-
i don't even know why i'm doing this, i'm a grown man for gods sake
-
than a first poster posting, "First!" is a second poster posting, "First!" Yeah, I know, I'm a tool.
-
Clancy Brown was a monster as the Kurgan. Such an iconic villain. The first Highlander is a classic, but doesn't receive enough respect. I remember Harry ignorantly bashing it 10 years ago.

Wasn't Paul Giamatti supposed to play Col. Tom Parker in Bubba Nosferatu? Whatever happened to that?
-
That book - is fucking hilarious. Your description of it is spot on. I cannot WAIT for this!
-
Coscarelli, Giamatti, Clancy fucking Brown, ESP inducing drugs, cold cut monsters, and killer mustaches! What's not to like about all that? Plus, the mask in the pic reminds me of the VR helmet in "Videodrome". I just wished that he'd get around to making "Bubba Nosferatu" or an actual decent Phantasm sequel, but this works for me.
-
but was Bruce Campbell going to return in Bubba Nosferatu?
-
Good question. I thought Coscarelli and Giamatti were going to work on that one after Bruce Campbell dropped out.
-
...cool as fuck. And Clancy Brown FTW.
-
WTF is Highlander?
-
I was stuck in Elko, NV for work but ended up with a lot of free time. My brother had just given me this book and it kept me entertained thoroughly. There are some logical loose-ends. Will it keep the jellyfish thing that dry-humps lightfixtures?
-
I was so expecting this to just turn to nothing. Thank God it didn't.
-
I like Giamatti as an actor but, with a few exceptions (most notably, American Splendor), I don't like his movies. Hopefully, this will be an exception to that.
-
It had probably been 7 or 8 years since I'd seen it. I was fairly stoned and it was playing on Chiller at 2 A.M... such an awesome, bug-nut-fucking-crazy movie. Everything I've seen from Coscarelli, be it the Phantasm series or Bubba Ho-Tep or even his Masters of Horror episode, I dig it all.
-
I remember hearing that Ron Perlman was taking over the role of 'Elvis'. Other than that, I have no idea what's going on with it.
-
Jun Horde Rule
-
How is he so young? We NEED a new Phantasm sequel. Angus ain't getting any younger and if he goes make Christopher Lee The Tall Man. Please, one more Phantasm. Booooooooooooooooyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!
-
This does sound like it could be really fun. Some incredible talents involved and interesting concepts. This is what we want!
-
Well at least they're not remaking...fuck. Forget I said that you brain fucked studio suit dick holes.
-
If anyone can get the tone right, it's Coscarelli. CANNOT WAIT
-
Been waiting for a while. GO TEAM COSCARELI!!!
-
Why can't any of you guys get past Word's spell checker and use the right homonym?

-
I wonder how it'll end.
-
I read this back before it was released in hardcover, and I really liked it. Strange fucking book, but I like that in a horror novel. I like that it kept me off balance while reading (one of my favorite horror novels is 'House of Leaves'... now that was fucking strange). Coscarelli seems like the right guy for the job, and casting these two just makes my smile wider.
-
I, too was waiting for 'Bubba Nosferatu', with the possibility that Giamatti was in it...But this is still cool as hell. Think I'll be reading this, soon....
-
Thanks, Quint. I thought this project was going to be forgotten. Didn't Don C. buy the rights and discuss this in 2007?
-
This book is f'n hilarious and horrifying at the same time. This will be so cool to see and I can't picture a better director for it. I don't read many books but I kinda want to re-read this one. So much crazy shit.
-
is good casting, but considering the reveal at the end, Bruce Willis would have been perfect.
-
aw watching Monster Vision with Joe Bob Briggs on TBS, when he would show movies like Phantasm, oh to be young again

I wonder if he'd actually do a cameo as a Limp-Bizkit-hatred-fueled hallucination of himself. Personally I'd change it to Insane Clown Posse and have the guy just be some dude in ICP makeup without actually saying it's either of the guys themselves. You know, legal matters.
-
One of my favorite books. David Wong is a solid writer, check out some of his articles on Cracked.com. The book is hilarious, gory, insane and oddly affecting. I loved it and I feel like most of the AICN crowd will too. It's a blast.
Unrelated but I want to share... I also saw Black Swan at the Philly Film fest (DA was there and he pwned me!) and it is a fantastic film.
-
zombies ftw
-
but he has to say this is seriously cool
-
And I don't know if it's because of joy or a feeling of impending doom. But I'll see this movie 10 times, with my crapped pants if I have to. What great news!
-
he made his first movie at 21 and Phantasm at only 25
-
Is that from the LAW ABIDING CITIZEN torture scene? What's the connection to this article? Its used on Twitch's article too.
-
I guess Clancy Brown and Giamatti must have clicked when teaming up for the Goon trailer.
-
...instead of doing Phantasm V? Yeah...
-
Class behind me at USC. Get ready. This kid is an amazing actor.
-
Coscarelli rocks. I´d like an ending to the Phantasm saga, but hey.
-
Great story. Coscarelli should be right at home.
-
I know. That's why I said we need a "new" Phantasm sequel, not a Phantasm sequel.
-
but we're all geeks here, we know there are 4 Phantasm films.
-
...Would still love to see BUBBA NOSFERATU, though - but if The Chin ain't in, then nor am I...
-
I didn't realize he made the first one at such a young age.
-
Deserves to get a good movie out of this. That guy (I know it's a pen name) let anyone read his book for free online and then when he published his first editions he personally signed them all and shipped them out himself at no extra charge. He posted this talkback on his Facebook page and is very excited about it.
-
Now, why the hell can't the man secure funding for the 5th and final Phantasm film when he's obviously getting funding for other films including this one which has the potential to be even weirder than Phantasm?
-
WANT! NOW! And this better get a proper fucking theatrical release..

Ron Pearlman was last supposed to play Bubba in Bubba Hotep 2
by EyeForgiveMelGibson
and Corscirelli was trying to get a 'star wars' type trilogy remake of Phantasm off the ground a few years ago. If u remember.
-
JTATE (get used to the acronym) is fantastic. And on top of this, it's perfect for Coscerelli. It's confusing, surreal, often makes little sense and is full of compelling images. This too good to be true.
-
Seriously, for anyone who has read the book or is planning on reading it, just try NOT picturing Felicia Day as Amy. She's absolutely made for the role, and this is coming from someone who doesn't watch The Guild. Anyway, glad to see Wong's movie landing such talented people. I never expected Giamatti, but I'm thrilled with both his and Brown's casting. Thinking back on the book, they both really, really work for their respective characters. I'm curious to see who they cast as Detective "Morgan Freeman"...
