Hey folks, Harry here with the latest DVD column, a day late – due to massive shitting and vomiting attacks. That’s right, I’ve been dying the last couple of days, yesterday, so weak, I barely spent time either not in bed or on the toilet – watch out folks, this thing is a trending topic on twitter and if it hits you, it is seven fists in the gut. So drink lots of water and cement to plug your butt up. Or else you’ll be nicknamed THE FUNNEL for life. This week has some pretty great releases – so let’s get to it. Remember the images and titles link to Amazon, where you can learn more about the title in question – and if you feel so motivated, you can purchase it, which helps keep this column going. So thanks for that – and have fun with the flicks! Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

I like PREDATORS. I do. My major complaint was that I felt it was missing a third act that ramped it up a notch for the summer season that it was released in. But for the budget and scope of the story that the film focused upon, it was a damn fine flick. Very much exactly the tone and look that a PREDATOR movie should be. Hopefully, the film succeeded enough for Fox to finance the next scale up PREDATORS flick. This is a good solid relaunch. Here’s the extras: Commentary by Robert Rodriguez and Nimród Antal Motion Comics Moments of Extraction Crucified Evolution of the Species: Predators Reborn The Chosen Fox Movie Channel presents Making a Scene Deleted and Extended Scenes Theatrical Trailer

APOCALYPSE NOW (Three-Disc Full Disclosure BluRay)
Everybody! Gather around. This is how to release a classic on Blu Ray. The 1st Blu-Ray disc has both the 1979 cut and APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX in full 2:35:1 for the first time on home video in 1080p. And that is reason enough to buy the set. APOCALYPSE NOW is one of THE movies. The kind of film that creates so many legendary actions – that people make movies about what went down in the making of the film. Someday, someone will attempt to make a feature narrative film about the production of APOCALYPSE NOW – and it will either be a work of genius or an epic creative failure – but it will happen. Because the story of this film is bigger than just Conrad’s book. It ties up names like George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, John Milius, Marlon Brando – the Vietnam War – a very real political hot-bomb at the time – and a disaster that turned to creative genius. To underline this – one of the 3 Blu-Ray discs is devoted to HEARTS OF DARKNESS – the amazing feature length Documentary which also has audio commentary from Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola. The third Blu Ray disc is devoted to the extras. Which are legion. This will take a full day to fully enjoy. And it’ll be a good day. Here: • Apocalypse Now - The 1979 Cut and Apocalypse Now Redux are presented for the first time in Hi-Def! • New 1080p transfers supervised by Francis Ford Coppola - first time ever in original theatrical aspect ratio (2.35:1) in home entertainment release! • Exclusive to Full Disclosure edition: Hearts of Darkness, the feature-length making-of documentary with optional audio commentary from Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola • Exclusive to Full Disclosure edition: 48-page printed collectible booklet with letter from Francis Ford Coppola, never-before-seen archives from the set, behind-the-scenes photos and more! • Exclusive to Full Disclosure edition: 52-page John Milius script excerpt (onscreen) with handwritten notes from Francis Ford Coppola • Exclusive to Full Disclosure edition: Storyboard Gallery • Exclusive to Full Disclosure edition: Marketing Archives • New "A Conversation with Martin Sheen" interview by Francis Ford Coppola • New "An Interview with John Milius" by Francis Ford Coppola • Never-before-included Complete 2001 Cannes Film Festival: Francis Ford Coppola interview by Roger Ebert • Audio Commentary by Francis Ford Coppola • Monkey Sampan "lost scene" • Additional Scenes • "Destruction of the Kurtz Compound" - with audio commentary by Francis Ford Coppola • "Heart of Darkness" - 1938 Mercury Theatre audio recording with Orson Welles • "The Hollow Men" - video of Marlon Brando reading T.S. Eliot's poem • "The Birth of 5.1 Sound" featurette • "Ghost Helicopter Flyover" sound effects demonstration • "A Million Feet of Film: The Editing of Apocalypse Now" featurette • "The Music of Apocalypse Now" featurette • "The Synthesizer Soundtrack" article by Bob Moog • "Heard Any Good Movies Lately? The Sound Design of Apocalypse Now" featurette • "The Final Mix" featurette • "Apocalypse Then and Now" featurette • "PBR Street gang" interviews with the boat crew actors • "The Color Palette of Apocalypse Now" featurette

I know I have to be getting old, because I remember seeing THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW upon its initial run. Which has continually, since its initial release has continued to play here in Austin. And this is being promoted as being the 35th Anniversary Release. Yeah. I’m getting Old. I also made the pilgrimage to New York for the Broadway show, but I’ve never been part of the cult of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. I love the songs, but I’ve never felt the communal need to take part in one of those crazed fevered ROCKY HORROR screenings. I think I’ve always felt like… Maybe I wouldn’t quite belong. What if it wasn’t the dream. Maybe I’m just not cool enough. So, I’m a closeted Rocky Horror virgin, who saw it on initial release, but never with the act. Except on Broadway. Now that I have the Blu-Ray – which has the full Vintage Callback Track, Rocky Oke… well it’s a fine fine release. Maybe I’ll stay up late, boning up on my rehearsal… and one day, when I feel I confidently won’t be a lost idiot. Here’s the details: * Restored Picture - Brand New 4K/2K Master From The Original Camera Negatives * The Midnight Experience: The Late Night, Double Feature, Picture-in-Picture Show, Vintage Callback Track (Unrated), Prop Box, Trivia Track * BD-LIVE: Live Lookup, Powered by IMDb * Rocky-oke: Sing It! * Don't Dream It, Be It: The Search for the 35th Anniversary Shadowcast, Part I * An-tic-i-pation: The Search for the 35th Anniversary Shadowcast, Part II * Mick Rock (A Photographer) * Mick Rock's Picture Show (A Gallery) * Pressbook and Poster Gallery

PSYCHO (Blu Ray)
PSYCHO is absolutely a great film. One of the great Hitchcock films, in terms of influence – PSYCHO could very well be THE most important and influential of all of Hitchcock’s films. It just isn’t one of my personal favorites of Hitch’s. I know that seems incredibly odd. For years I had the Bates Motel neon in my bedroom. My keychain was a Bates Motel keychain. I love Mother, Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, the House, the iconography, the shower scene, Bernard Herrmann’s score, the physical editing of the film, the original screenplay – but I just prefer the other types of films that Hitchcock made. The slasher psycho killer genre, while it can be fun, has never really been my fetish of choice. Ah hell, who am I fooling, I love PSYCHO. Just watching this BluRay – watching ol Norman Bates lower that brow and watch as you see Mother peak through – chills. You know what always kept me from loving this film – the full screen transfer. That’s how I saw the film for the majority of my life. Because Hitch used his Television team – if felt less sweeping like the other Hitchcock films. Now that I watch it at home, in the crispness that this 1080p transfer gave me. I love it. Here’s what you get: The Making of Psycho Psycho Sound In The Master's Shadow: Hitchcock's Legacy Hitchcock / Truffaut Interview Excerpts Newsreel Footage: The Release of Psycho The Shower Scene: With and Without Music The Shower Scene: Storyboards by Saul Bass The Psycho Archives Lobby Cards Behind-the-Scenes Photographs Production Photographs Theatrical Trailer Re-release Trailers My Scenes Feature Commentary with Stephen Rebello (author of "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho") BD Live

I was so happy when this came, and I only became happier when I put the first disc in and hit play. It doesn’t technically start with Season 1 Episode 1 of THE BIONIC WOMAN show. Instead, it starts with THE BIONIC MAN episodes that introduced us to Jamie Sommers. Then transitions into THE BIONIC WOMAN television series. For me it was such a delight to just watch the story of Jamie Sommers play out. Lindsay Wagner was so good in this. Just likable as hell. She seemed strong, yet lovely. That perfect balance for the character. So dig in and enjoy – you can ponder all the awesome bionic advantages to being with THE BIONIC WOMAN!

I was at Cannes when MOULIN ROUGE! Premiered, without a ticket. I was watching something else that night – can’t remember what now, but I wanted MOULIN ROUGE! This is easily my favorite Baz Luhrmann film – Yoko and I watch our old DVD quite often, as we’re the sort of dorks that love singing along to the film – but I have to say, that DVD is one of the worst up-converting DVDs I’ve seen in my collection. Most things seem to convert better, but that disc just blew. I think it comes down to just how filled with detail every image of MOULIN ROUGE! Is… but this 1080p Blu Ray just dazzles. To call it a sparkling diamond would be redundant. This and ROMEO + JULIET coming to BluRay on the same day makes it a day worth celebrating – now where’s STRICTLY BALLROOM?

SEVEN SAMURAI (Criterion Blu)
Really, what is there to say? It is a Criterion Blu Ray of SEVEN SAMURAI. You’d practically shoot your mother for it. It is, what it is supposed to be. A great great release of a great great film. It is Kurosawa teaching the world how to make a great western, a great CGI Family film… ya know, basically schooling the future on a simple structure, with note perfect characters, a dire situation and a brilliant gambit. This is SEVEN SAMURAI – there are films like it, but none better. I love MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, but not like SEVEN SAMURAI. There’s something primal about this film. It’s carved like the 10 COMMANDMENTS in my mind. My father’s father took him to see it, and he took me. One day I’ll show my kids. And so it shall be for as long as such things are done, because SEVEN SAMURAI is eternal. Here’s what the good team at Criterion have for ya: Restored, high-definition digital transfer Audio commentaries by film scholars Audio commentary by Japanese film expert Michael Jeck Fifty-minute documentary on the making of Seven Samurai My Life in Cinema, a two-hour video conversation with Oshima and Kurosawa "Seven Samurai": Origins and Influences, a documentary Theatrical trailers and teaser Gallery of rare posters and behind-the-scenes and production stills PLUS: A booklet featuring essays by Kenneth Turan, Peter Cowie And it all rocks!

Here’s a film that I’m not real sure how I missed in a theater, but apparently I did. Think god for Home Video – I wish this hit on BluRay though. Here’s a historical epic by Alejandro Amenabar starring Rachel Weisz as an astronomer in ancient Alexandria who tried to preserve the wisdom of the Ancient World that was stored there. It isn’t quite THE TRAIN, but it does play along the same lines. If you think about it. Abstractly. Well, not that abstractly. I think this film should have garnered a bit more attention than it got. Check it out.

The documentary series that are a part of these ULTIMATE EDITIONS really are outstanding. The transfer on the film seems like it’s just as good as on the regular Blu-Ray – so really, you’re paying the $33.99 for that documentary – unless you don’t have it on Blu Ray yet, which I suppose is possible, but I have to say – if you’re gonna own any of the Harry Potter films, you simply must own HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN… For me, it is the perfect mix of the fun times at Hogwarts with the dire dreaded doomy sensation that the latter films have. Since then, it has all been rather continually intense. So life threatening and spooky as to be an unfun fantasy to a degree. But here… here it’s all good. The most hopeful and uplifting of the series. Also, simply the best directed of the run. The leads have never been more honestly kid like. That… and God, I love Gary Oldman in this film. He’s just amazing. Absolutely amazing. I love how intense he is in pursuing what he is after… but that turn with Harry, wonderful. Just wonderful. I’m really looking forward to these last two films. But I’m resolved to believe this will be the best film of the series. But who knows what may come. The ULTIMATE Editions continue to impress. Here’s what is on that extra BluRay and filling the box: DISC 1: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban DISC 2: Creating the World of Harry Potter Part 3: Magical Creatures Tour Nick Dudman’s Creature Shop An Interview in Spanish with Alfonso Cuarón 3 Vintage TV Specials: The Magic Touch of Harry Potter; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: Something Wicked This Way Comes; The Making of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban DISC 3: Additional Scenes Creating the Vision: Interview with J.K. Rowling and the Filmmakers Conjuring a Scene: Creating Buckbeak and the Dementors for the Screen Johnny Vaughan and the Shrunken Head Lead Raucous Interviews with the Cast Self-Guided Tours of Honeydukes and Professor Lupin’s Classroom Meet the Animal Trainers in Care of Magical Creatures 3 Challenges: Test Your Memory with Magic You May Have Missed, Help Crookshanks Catch Scabbers, and Go on an Unexpected Quest with Sir Cadogan COLLECTIBLES: 48-Page Creatures Photo Book with rare images from years 1-7 Year 3 lenticular card Two in a series of character cards: Hermione Granger & Sirius Black

I like GOBLET OF FIRE an awful lot. Mainly because of that amazing scene with the glittery vamp, Potter & the rebirth of Voldemort. That sequence is so good. So bleeding good. That it carries the rest of the film. Not that I didn’t love the visiting schools, the mermaid competition, the dragon challenge and all. It was just all kinds of good. As an Ultimate Edition it continues its exhaustive documentary look at everything you could possibly want to know about the making of and behind the scenes of this series. And this really truly is a remarkable series. DISC 1: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with In-Movie Experience: Join members of the cast as they share memorable moments, personal perspectives and fun facts while watching the movie BD Live DISC 2: Creating the World of Harry Potter Part 4: Sound and Music 5 Vintage TV Specials: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Behind the Magic; Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Dark Matters, New Masters; Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Some Animal Magic; Inside Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire DISC 3: Preparing for the Yule Ball Conversations with the Cast Reflections on the Fourth Film Triwizard Tournament: Dragon Arena - Harry vs. the Horntail: The First Task; Meet the Champions Triwizard Tournament: Lake - In Too Deep: The Second Task Triwizard Tournament: Maze - Maze Challenge; To the Graveyard and Back Challenge; The Maze: The Third Task; He Who Must Not Be Named COLLECTIBLES: 44-Page Sound & Music Photo Book with rare images from years 1-7 Year 4 lenticular card Two in a series of character cards: Ronald Weasley & Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody

This was one of those films from the birth year of AICN, 1996. I gushed like a madman for it. It was because of this film, that we got so excited by Leo’s casting in TITANIC – I remember my teenage sister going GAGA in love with DiCaprio in this. 14 years later, little has changed. ROMEO + JULIET is still amazing. Claire Danes is still magic. John Leguizamo is still awesome. And the whole film dances with the mind. I’ve been sick so I haven’t seen this BluRay yet, but if it is as great as the MOULIN ROUGE! – it’ll really be something. Probably picking it up tomorrow.

The last season of the incredibly fun horror television anthology, TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE. That’s over 7 hours of creepy fun. I tuned in religiously to these while living on that ranch in North Texas. Out in the middle of nowhere, I can remember being terrified by some of these. Silly scared. You know that feeling? It is no wonder – with stories by Harlan Ellison, Stephen King, Clive Barker and more. Now that I’m significantly older than the silly teenage curled up with a blanket in a leather recliner 3 miles to the nearest person… 30 miles from the nearest cop – alone in the dead of night… these things aired at 3am beaming out of Wichita Falls. And as an adult I have to say – they’re pretty damn scary! And now I have them all. And so can you.

You know – I wishy wash a bit on PSYCHO above – but there’s something that I think is even greater… and that’s my crazy love and affection for PSYCHO 2 – the crazy mad bit of awesome from Richard Franklin – where Norman Bates is just absolutely amazing. But this Documentary explores the entire PSYCHO series and beyond that its influence on current filmmakers. It is a pretty solid piece of work – another great release from The Shout Factory!

If you have the 5 seasons & the Christmas Special – there’s no reason to pick this up, there’s nothing new. However, if you’ve been waiting for a complete set – here ya go. All the insanity that your favorite host of your favorite show could ever muster. Good stuff!

This is one of the best flicks out of Naoyuki Tomomatsu – who makes incredibly insane Japanese titillating goriffic ejaculatory cinema. If you like that, this is two squirts of lube and a box of tissue. You’ll love it.

I kind of have a mad obsession of LAFF-A-LYMPICS. I suppose that it equaled the cartoon equivalent of DESTROY ALL MONSTERS meets IT’S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD meets SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS. And it occupies a very specific manic moment of childhood for me. If I ever lose little Harry, watching LAFF-A-LYMPICS brings that kid a running. A simple pleasure.

If Jesse Eisenberg deserves an Academy nomination in 2010, I honestly feel it should be for HOLY ROLLERS and not THE SOCIAL NETWORK – but there’s no way that will happen. But this was an amazing “based on a true story” film about Hasidic Ecstasy Smuggling between Old Amsterdam and New. This didn’t get near the audience that a film of this quality should have garnered… Both Capone and I loved it quite a bit. So give it a look see.

I didn’t get a chance to watch the DVD of this yet, but I have to tell you – the recent films that Dolph Lundgren has directed, while being very low budget – they’re pretty damn old school awesome. I’m hearing good things about this – planning on watching it once I feel better and laughing won’t hurt or cause a bowel movement.

I know me telling you to not watch a new film by Dario Argento called GIALLO and starring Adrian Brody is probably not going to work out, but believe me – the dream of that combination is not the result – I’m sad to report. That’s all I have to say about that.

All those that bow at the shrine of Tom Hardy, click now – because you’re gonna want this. Trust me, if you have a Tom Hardy fetish, this WWII Nazi Prisoner of War Camp – meets wild escape story – meets romance and more is awesome. If you don’t know that about Tom Hardy, you do now, so check it out. He’s good throughout it all.
Next week we have some more super cool treats for you, including THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE, the BACK TO THE FUTURE Trilogy on Blu (outstanding discs), 2nd season of THE CLONE WARS, Fox’s amazing ALIEN ANTHOLOGY, the great under seen WINTER’S BONE, Kubrick’s PATHS OF GLORY (Criterion Blu), the astonishing HOUSE (Criterion Blu), MANIAC (Blu), Oliver Stone’s SOUTH OF THE BORDER, ROCK & RULE Blu, YOU DON’T KNOW JACK, TONIGHT, DARK STAR – The Hyper-Drive Edition, CHAPLIN at Keystone, complete SEX & THE CITY, PSYCHOMANIA, SANTA CLAUS THE MOVIE Blu, CANNIBAL GIRLS, the amazing LEGEND OF THE BLACK SCORPION, FOUR IN A JEEP, ELF (Blu Box) and more!

You're spot on with your review Harry. Good start, let's hope they can build on it. The thing that really makes me like it though, is all the fanboys freaking out because of the trailer showing more targeting lasers than in the film.

a Blu Ray player? <P> I'm willing to bet its 0.01% compared to dvd players. Blu Ray pointless, over priced and totally unnecessary. <P> It makes old films, especially B/W, look terrible. They were never meant to look ultra crisp and sharp in the first place, Blu Ray takes the warmth out these old films. <P> It sure as hell doesnt improve them!

Never felt the love for "Rocky Horror"

    by UrbanSamurai

I think it is a well-made and fun movie and Tim Curry is of course... well, as Tim Curry as can be. Just never got psyched about it. Still a great week when you consider that APOCALYPSE NOW and SEVEN SAMURAI, two of the greatest films ever made, both get really good, definitive editions out. But Seven Samurai is and will always be the most perfect movie ever. You could show it on the side of a cardboard box and it would still be awesome. PSYCHO is a masterpiece of its own deranged kind, but I'm afraid I can't share the love for PSYCHO II. Not because the movie itself is bad (it is actually quite good), but because for me it defines the term "Unnecessary cash-in sequel". That totally spoils all the fun for me. And Harry: What IS your favourite Hitchcock movie? I am interested, too. I am kinda biased between REAR WINDOW and NORTH BY NORTHWEST. Obvious, I know, but nostalgia dictates and these two are part of my childhood.

that's hard. Somedays I'm in love with NORTH BY NORTHWEST, somedays it is NOTORIOUS, somedays it is SHADOW OF A DOUBT or SPELLBOUND, then I'll put on ROPE or THE LADY VANISHES... but more and more frequently, I find myself saying that my favorite Hitchcock is STRANGERS ON A TRAIN the UK cut. That fucking carousel scene is a killer - and the murder... Awesome. Plus Hitch's daughter is so awesome in it.

    Lotta Love For Predator 2

    by MakNeil

<p>Which is surprising, considering that Stephen Hopkins's direction was a bit wooden (recall the scene in the subway tunnel, when Bill Paxton gets beheaded; that scene was cut so tight that you could almost hear the Hopkins shout "Action.").</p> <p>Then there was the dialog. The only bit that I can recall was Danny Glover saying something about shoving something up his own ass. Not only did it make me cringe hearing it–not because of prudishness–but because it was such an awkward bit of dialog.<p> <p>The best part of the film, other than the Alien skull toward the end, was the cool weapons the Predator used. This was the area where Predators fell short.</p>

is a really good movie. Own the bluray, by the way, but it's the spanish edition (the original language of the film is english, anyways). It features all the good things and bad things Amenabar has... in this case, the balance is closer to the quality of The Others and The Sea Inside than to the crappy, arrogant and ultimately laughable rip-off that Open your eyes was.

i hate to say it, but...

    by HelveticaConspiracy

predators was god-awful. trust me, i never wanted to say those words. i love me some rodriguez and was thrilled that he was producing the movie. and, that it was shot in austin (you can't help but geek out at barton springs doubling for an alien river, if you're an austinite). but, the resulting movie was a mess. adrien brody is hands down the dullest actor working today. he alone has ruined movies that should have been great (cough* king kong *cough) with his wooden, boring acting style (cough* giallo *cough). and, his track record keeps right on rolling with his ridiculous miscasting in predators. and, the script doesn't help matters at all. it's so tin-eared and plot-hole as to be painful. the best characters die early. scenes and actors are wasted (laurence fishburne should be ashamed of the ham sandwich he serves up as acting; and, how could you make a samurai vs predator scene boring?!!!). no chemistry between the leads. the list goes on. it pains me to say this kind of stuff about a film i so truly wanted to love. on the upside, though, i enjoyed the ever living hell out of machete and i hope rodriguez picks up the directing reins if the ever make a sequel to this thoroughly wasted opportunity known as predators. my 2 cents.

I paid about the same price for my Blu-ray player as I did for my second DVD player, and the movies are the same price or cheaper than what I paid for their DVD counterparts. <p></p><p></p> Go to this site and try to tell me it doesn't look better. . to the retard that said <p>blu-ray makes B&W look bad

    by AKA_Gern_Blanston

Seriously, dude, it just sounds like you're trying to justify not owning a blu ray player to yourself since you, for whatever reason, can't get one yet. You're absolutely, poisitively fuckin bugnuts if you truly think that blu-ray hurts a black and white film. I just got done watching my Maltese Falcon blu last night and it looks incredible. I can also vouch for the blu transfers of Casablanca, Fritz Lang's M, Young Frankenstein, the Lon Chaney Jr Wolfman, Seven Samurai, Buster Keaton's the General, and the original (and only worthy) King Kong. Every one looks absolutely amazing in 1080p, with a sharp contrast between the darks and lights, and a richness to the entire look that adds to the film. Hell, Casablanca looks so good it could have been filmed yesterday. <p>Seriously, guy, I'm sorry you can't afford a blu ray player at the moment - truly I am - but your attempts at justifying that unfortunate position fail miserably, because the complaints you listed hold no truth. Thanks for playing. Try again.

    by jimmy rabbitte

...and every Blu-Ray movie I've watched has looked great. Some of my older DVD's have not upconverted as nicely as some newer ones; but those discs would, also, show their limitations, on a DVD player (and they have).<p> My most recent upgrade, to Blu-Ray was the Band of Brothers set (thanks to the fire-sale price link, form the Herc Vault); and it looks much nicer than the DVD. The picture is sharper, the sound distributes better and even though both DVD and Blu versions have DTS, the Blu-Ray sounds sharper. And lest any of the Blu-Ray detractors should accuse me of wearing rose-colored glasses, to counteract buyer's remorse, I'll add that the player was a birthday gift, from my old man.

Would that I could will it out of my memory. The 1979 theatrical release is a hell of a lot better in terms of pace and tone. The REDUX version adds extra scenes that only slow things down (the French plantation scene that adds a slight bit of context at the cost of derailing momentum) or lighten the mood (stealing Kurtz's surfboard and hiding in the jungle?!?). I love the original film, and it is one of my favorites, but REDUX is something I would never buy or recommend. I hope there will be a standalone 1979 version I can pick up; I noticed that it had gone out of print on DVD in the past year or so and thought that was a tragedy.

the only real reason I bought the blu ray remake back when it hit was so this Halloween I could watch the 1080p HD transfer of the Chaney Wolfman. It's an extra on the new version blu ray that you can watch through BD-Live - it may not be on disc but it IS a 1080p remastered print, and his argument was that 1080p hurts B&W films, so I included it. <p>Believe me, I WISH Universal would get off their asses and release Wolfman, Frankenstein, and Bride of Frankenstein on blu. What do you care what someone else watches movies on? So what if someone watches movies on a TV and DVD player from Goodwill. Not everyone is stupid enough to go out and spend tons of money on some jackshit TV and blu-ray that'll be outdated in a few years. Get over yourselves.

The two movies I demand right now on Bluray are Aladdin and House....Disney are fucking dicksuckers when it comes to releasing their old flicks on Blu...but House is starting to look like it will never be out on Bluray. That was my favorite movie for many, many years. Had a ratty old VHS of it...awesome "horror" movie. I needs it.

The "I can't afford it" argument

    by Gwai Lo

can never really be faulted. I'm not even gonna argue with someone who says they're perfectly fine with the quality of their tube TV and DVD player. I was for years, if you're a movie lover you just want your cinema fix any which way. But the fact that people are still making the "DVD looks better because movies aren't meant to look crisp" argument is mind-boggling. That shit was silly to say when DVD was some futuristic format that was going to render your VHS collection obsolete, it's even sillier now two decades later. That guy deserves all the flack he's been getting.

    B&W Blus ARE soft

    by white_vader

WHEN the original source was. They're sharp when the original was. They're the fucking CLOSEST you can get to the film source. For the fist time these look like FILM and not video. When done right. <p> With the proviso that this is if they mastered it to be ACCURATE over pleasing idiotic consumers who think they paid for an HDTV so everything should look like digital video/ESPN. These are the same fuckwits who are the reason companies are now cropping stuff that was 4:3 OAR so they don't get black bars at the sides rather than the top & bottom. <p> The other part of the equation is calibrating the TV. Turn sharpening off. Turn "vivid" or whatever off. Turn that stupid 200hz shit off if you're viewing a 24fps source like film. Find some colour bars and test signals on one of your discs and calibrate it. You don't have to buy an expensive hardware device. Spending a bit of time making sure everything's set up right will make the WORLD of difference in the quality of the picture. <p> And if you're a moron who LIKES the clean, scrubbed look of digital on their oldschool films, you can do that with the settings on the TV too. It doesn't even need to be done to the discs. But it's the same stupid "I'm not paying for black bars" motherfuckers that are making the studios do this when they can do it themselves at home. <p> And yes, players are cheap as chips these days. If you can't afford it, fine. But don't be a dog-in-the-manger.

    by Cobra--Kai

Listen to white_vader he knows much about much.<p> Probably the best looking Blu I have is SIN CITY and that's a predominantly b&w movie.<p> The Dojo recently wall-mounted a 47inch 1080p TV on a chimney breast with all wiring hidden down through the stack.. leading to a PS3, Xbox360, Wii, and HD Tv reciever.<p> Having a good set-up doesn't make the films better - but it does make the 'experience' of watching them better and feel more of an event.

  • Oct. 21, 2010, 5:25 a.m. CST

I started the Blu Ray argument here and

    by Drsambeckett1984

I stand by what I said. Yes the picture quality is improved, I never denied that, but on a 22 inch LCD, whats the point? <P> I can afford a blu ray player, I actually am a grown up with a full time job, maybe I feel that my money is better spent on food and rent. <P> As for BW movies, I don't like the crispness that Blu Ray gives them, it looks artificial. <P> And as for the person who said get a PS3, they cost a fortune.

  • Oct. 21, 2010, 6:11 a.m. CST

    by Cobra--Kai

Good Dr Beckett, no one can tell you what to do with your money but you're obviously a big film fan by virtue of visiting this site.<p> Decent sized HD Tv's have plummeted in price this last year, and a standalone blu ray player certainly won't trouble the bank account either. The nice thing about Blu Ray players is that they upscale and improve the pictures of any existing dvds you own, and you don't need to spend a ton on buying new Blu Ray discs - you can rent or stream them. Wouldnt it be nice going into work next week and saying the money I earn in the next couple of days will be spent on myself - my passion in films.<p> I spent a bit on my system but I shopped around and got a good price, worth every cent.

.especially when it comes to the games and exclusives;HALO,Gears of War,Ninja Blade, etc and not to mention a superior controller.Sure Playstation 3 has a few good games (Killzone 2 aint really one of them.) but the controllers suck, for the most part, It's just another blu ray player but a very good one since it could bookmark over 5 blu rays and divx videos (when installed in the console's hard drive.) however most games are encoded in 720p unlike the 360 which is 1080p.Oh, and there's not much graphic superiority between the aforemtnioned consoles. PS3 receives mostly ports from the 360 and is still tricky to program.<p>Take THAT!

"THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN" was my FAVORITE show, as a kid. And I have been wanting the entire series on dvd for so long. I seem to recall that there was some legal issues over the rights to it in the USA, or something to that effect. (I have no idea, other than the rumor of legal issues.) <P>I guess that "region 2" is not for USA dvd players, I take it? <P>And I'm guessing...that as for the BIONIC WOMAN dvd set, Steve Austin is referred to as THE BIONIC MAN for legal reasons, too. <P>I want all the BIONIC COLLECTIONS, Harry. People still claiming RHPS is a 'bad movie'...

    by ClayG

understand neither the meaning of the term 'satire' nor the fact that the low-budget and the campy performances were intentional choices on the part of the people making the film. Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien were offered a large budget to make the movie, originally--IF they'd cast Mick Jagger or David Bowie as Frank and do some other celeb casting. They opted for a low budget look and much of the cast from the various stage versions. These morons making this 'Rocky is a bad film' argument probably think the practice of talking to the screen began in ridicule, like MST3K. Wrong again. Read this if you don't believe me.

eustisclay re: psycho on blu, and b&w blu for doubters

    by Dr Farragammo

I understand your hesitation. I have the same dvd edition and was torn. I had recently rented forbidden planet blu on netflix to see it justified the jump as it also had same features. I really couldn't tell much clarity difference than the remastered dvd. HOWEVER best buy had psycho on sale for $19 so I bit. I have to say the difference is startling. It looks and sounds fucking amazing and I think its worth the upgrade. I also want to vouch the same for the exorcist on blu. For grainy 70's doc style filn stock it looks gorgeous (or gorgeous as that film can look lol). The argument from the other poster about b&w looking shitty in HD is insane. From a budget standpoint I hear you on rebuying a movie, but technically it is something to behold. Now I gotta rebuy those twiight zones goddammit!

the 360's controller feels just right and case in point; I purchased Darksiders for my PS3 when the game was released (january)alongside Bayonetta, anyway during a boss battle against Tiamat (some fucking giant bat) after 5 attempts, I just tossed the controller since aiming the character's crossblade/glave was a bit off.I swapped my ps3 for the 360 version and voila!! beat the boss on the first try.<p>Gow3 was developed to be compatible with 1080p and it was a very good game just like MGS4.Don't get me wrong, PS3 have a few great exclusives from resistance to infamous and little big planet, but overall the 360 experience is more satisfying.I also like the idea to play your own soundtracks within the game.

"Legend of the Superheroes" (1979) at Warner Archieves

    by The Reluctant Austinite

I can't believe you can order a legitimate dvd-r copy of "Legend of the Superheroes" through the Warner Archieve Collection starting this week. It's the crazy live action 2-hour special that featured Adam West, Burt Ward and Frank Gorshin reprising their "Batman" charcters alongside Hawkman, Green Lantern and all the JLA charcters facing off against the Legion of Doom characters, including Solomon Grundy. The first hour is a live action/comdey adventure while the second hour is a "Superhero Roast" hosted by Ed McMahon. This insane bit of 70s nostalgia is pretty embarassing for everyone involved, but has become a cult classic for comic book geeks just like "The Star Wars Holiday Special" is a piece of jaw dropping lunacy for Star Wars geeks. I never though we'd ever see a legitimate, good looking release of this special due to the myrid of rights issues revolving around all the charcters and celebtrity cameos. I think anyone who wants a copy should probably jump on this opportunity before it disappears.

It's been a long time since I had seen it, and it was amazing. I think I never really understood how great almost every aspect of this movie was. I saw someone at the top talking bad about Leguizamo, which is ironic to me because my friends were over when this movie came on (everybody got sucked into watching most of it) and seemed like the most heard phrase was how awesome Leguizamo was in it. Then the next day at school (film student), I was talking to people about how I hadn't seen the film in a long time and thought it was great, to which the reply was often heard that Leguizamo ruled in that movie.

You know what, Harrys right about HP...

    by kidicarus

The last films are very well-crafted, very well made, but the innate whimsy and fun of the 1st and 2nd movies (while those movies are undoubtedly the worst of the series) is gone, which is why the HP books are so popular in the first place. Rowling always contrasts the big, operatic themes she has in place for the day to day school life and all the fun of being a young kid is. That's part of the magic of the series. But while POA is a great movie, I think it's a lot of the changes Cuaron made (making Hogwarts look more dungeon-like and forboding and the tonal shifts) that really made each movie get darker and darker, and losing a lot of the fun of the books in the process.
