I'm leery because, as you pointed out the quality of the series was on a sliding scale (while I did actually enjoy the 3rd moreso than the second)...and then My Soul To Take was wretched non-sense...and that was a Craven passion project.

Jamie Kennedy was the secret key to SCREAM

    by Margot Tenenbaum

The series pretty much fell apart the minute he was killed in part II. You need his character to set up the premise of the movie. The people they've used since have been pale imitations, IMO.

    Craven

    by Katet19

I always felt like the quality of the Scream films has less to do with Craven and more to do with the writer/quality of material he was given. The First was a breath of fresh air and while it suffers backlash is a taut clever horror flick that's become a classic for me. The Second was good but a bit taken with itself, and taking it out of a small town and onto a college campus sort of fucked with the way it worked. The third was pure shit Retconning the intent of the first two murderers. The third it should be noted was written by Ehren Krueger and not Kevin WIlliamson.

    by NinjaRap

2 least of all, but the first one was quite tense, even kinda scary for its time, and the third one was quite funny and clever. Second was... neither all that tense OR funny, but it wasn't terrible. So I'll see this one. I'm just worried that A) they're ruining the closure of 3 and B) about the news of a troubled production. I'm sure as hell not looking to watch another "Cursed."

And with Kevin Williamson writing it again, this could very well come close to the first, if not, be on par with th second (which was really good in my opinion. But then again, it could just be a rehash and Wes Craven didn't impress anybody with My Soul to Take (though that film was very unintentionally funny).

I can't help get excited about this, however

    by The Reluctant Austinite

one of things that worked in all three films (even when other things didn't) is the interaction of the cast. The central cast created a great vibe together. In the first films, Arquette and Cox were falling in love and I believe this added something magical to their characters. During this production, they were splitting up and I can't help but think those negative vibes will end up on screen. Word on street is that this was another troubled production for Craven with quite a bit of studio tampering, so I don't know what to expect. Just for the record, I loved the first film, thought the second film felt rushed and the ending kind of dropped the ball but I still enjoy it, and against the grain of public opinion I actually think the third film is better than the second (a couple of ill placed cameos not withstanding). And, yes, Craven kind of dropped the ball with "My Soul to Take," the talkiest slasher film ever made with a lot of spiritual and psychological ideas flying about willy nilly to not much intellectual effect. Nice atmosphere, but short on thrills.

    by Tocksick

I was a huge fan of the first two Scream films so I admit I'm excited at Craven and Williamson teaming up with most of the original cast. The third was a big disappointment and the writer for that film had a definite lack of dialogue finesse that made Williamson the Hollywood golden boy of the late 90's. I actually think that Scream 2 was AS good as the original - maybe it was the faster pace or the even greater amount of self-reference - I consider it one of my favorite sequels. I don't have huge expectations for number 4 but maybe the very long break gave Williamson some extra creative juices.

    Scream 2

    by jmac4ever

Honestly, I actually enjoyed Scream 2. It's my favorite one of the three because it feels like the most authentic. Unlike the first film, the side characters in part 2 are WAY more fleshed out and unlike the first film, the side characters actually seem BOTHERED that people around them are dying. It gives everything a much more grim vibe. Plus, the ex-wife was a more believable killer then the kids in part one. As far as Scream 3 goes, it certainly would have been better if Williamson had actually wrote it instead of phoning in notes, but I'm not as upset about the retconning as some. While it was a stretch, it was actually more thematically appropriate to tie it all back to the film industry then it was to blame it all on one woman's cheating ways. Where S3 went wrong was making the supporting cast a complete joke and taking all the dread from part 2 and completely throwing it out the window. I'm looking forward to Scream 4, but with caution. Nothing from the reports have suggested that it's been a smooth shoot and we haven't heard good things about the tone. However, the movie still lists Williamson as the writer, so the jury's still out. I definitely hope that we get more fleshed out characters and not simple caracatures. Otherwise, forget about the rest of the new trilogy.

Totally. Agree. 2 is my favorite. It seemed like everyone was so energized by the success of the first that they went for broke in creating a worthy sequel. That energy carried over into the movie, which I love. 3 just felt lazy. Like everyone involved sort of shrugged and said "I guess we need to do a 3rd one. Did the check clear?" It was definitely missing Williamson. I'm cautiously optimistic for part 4, for all the reasons mentioned.

    Hugh Jackman has confirmed Aronofsky

    by cgih8r

Jackman: "With Aronofsky directing, this will not be a usual "X-Men" movie. This is, hopefully for me, going to be out of the box. It’s going to be the best one...well, I would say that, but I really do feel that, and I feel this is going to be very different...This is Wolverine. This is not Popeye. He's kind of dark...but, you know, this is a change of pace. Chris McQuarrie, who wrote 'The Usual Suspects,' has written the script, so that'll give you a good clue. [Aronofsky's] going to make it fantastic. There's going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure."

Hayden is playing the new Randy

    by Mr. Profit

In the casting notices sent out her character is supposedly a horror movie geek.
I like how the film is playing with the last ten years being a weird time in horror. I like how they are going to make fun of remakes and reboots when this film is essentially a reboot disguised as a sequel. It's designed to start another trilogy.
My only issue is Emma Roberts is like chinese steamed chicken and broccoli with no sauce. She is boring. If anything Lucy Hale who is supposedly one of the opening sequence victims should have been the main girl because she is a much better actress.
I'm there opening weekend though, Scream reminds me of High School. And like it or not, horror was stuck in the DTV sequel territory until Scream made slashers cool again.
Sure it inspired a wealth of imitators, and even part 3 became a parody of itself, but they aren't terrible films by any means...
I bet Jennifer Love Hewitt is on the line with Brandy and Freddy Prinze right now, wondering how they can make another "I Know What You Did Last Summer" that ignores the shitty DVD sequel and brings them all back...

That the killer is actually an alien robot sent from the future to kill Sydney prescott for absolutely no reason at all. Then right as the film begins to climax, it cuts to a shot of Wes Craven sitting by a fireside in a fancy robe smoking a pipe explaining how he didn't know where to "take it from here". But he then tells the audience he thinks we'll "enjoy the credits..." and with that all the outtakes from all the scream films are shown with the song "Why Can't We Be Friends?" playing in the background. Scream and Scary Movie

    by theyreflockingthisway

I've always found it weird that Scream, a spoof on the horror genre, got spoofed itself with Scary Movie.

I mean here we have a film that cleverly pokes fun at horror movie cliches and then another film comes along and re-creates it scene for scene with incredible cheap and dumb jokes. It's just attempting to spoof a spoof that is much more clever than it is.

I really hope the Scary Movie series doesn't also get revived with this. It completely misses the point - what they going to do next, spoof Airplane?

say what you want about SCREAM, it was one of the

most influential movies of the past 20 years. opened small than rode to $100 million domestically on huge word of mouth. single-handedly revitalized both the horror and teen-movie genres. I'm not even a huge admirer, the first 3 REALLY seem dated now, and parts 2 and 3 were pretty lame, but SCREAM 1 was revolutionary in 1996.

Did you know that the original title on Kevin Williamson's screenplay for 'Scream' was 'Scary Movie'? Fun fact, eh?
