News Corp., Which Reported Megan Fox Had Signed To Play Catwoman, Now Reports Brandon Routh Could Play SUPERMAN For Zack Snyder!

Published at: Oct. 19, 2010, 1:48 p.m. CST

I am – Hercules!! British tabloid News of the World reports that Zack Snyder (“Watchmen”) is considering returning “Superman Returns” star Brandon Routh to the role of Clark Kent in Snyder’s upcoming new Man of Steel movie, the one being produced by “Dark Knight” writer-director Christopher Nolan. But can News Of The World, owned by News Corp., be trusted? The tabloid has been described as sister publication to News Corp.’s The Sun, which reported on Aug. 26, 2009 that Megan Fox had signed to play Catwoman in Nolan’s next Batman movie. Megan Fox’s publicist quickly issued a statement indicating she had not signed to play Catwoman in Nolan’s next Batman movie:
Megan is a huge fan of the Batman movies and of director Christopher Nolan but these discussions have not taken place. Thank you for checking.
“Dark Knight” producers subsequently confirmed that Nolan has not contacted Fox about the role. So if any journalists out there are still interviewing Snyder about “Legend of the Guardians,” kindly ask if he really indicated to News of the World that he’s considering returning Routh to the blue tights. Find ComicBookMovie’s story on News of the World’s story here.

    Routh

    by SanityKaos

Routh was not the problem in Superman Returns. The story was the problem. Also the fact that it pretended to be like the Donnor films. I don't mind Routh playing Superman as long as they ignore all the other movies.

    by lochkray

He was fine in the first one. So was Langilalala (or whatever) as the Perry White character. And the airplane crash sequence was a 'perfect' Superman action sequence. Kevin Spacey was okay as Luthor, but we don't need another Lex Luthor story. As for the rest of Returns...ugh.

There was a committe set up and one of those who was called to give evidence was Rebbakah brookes. News international told the head of the committee that if that if they as much as suponeda her they would print stuff about him in thier newspaper. this undermined the committee. when murdoch supported new labour, anyone who dared speak ill of blair in the labour party were threatened by his flunkies. murdoch has created an air of fear in the house of commons.

The News of the World makes its money with huge mostly untrue page one headliners. Make a few million-pound/euro profits from the tens of thousands of morons who actually buy the paper. Then lose 1% of that money earned from the headline in liable claims, write a cheque, and repeat <P> Most of the victims of the liable story are rich celebrities that can afford to take the “news” paper to court. (br) They have named-and-shamed innocent people as paedophiles (along with real paedophiles) and have caused some of these people to be severely beaten up in the street and there houses vandalised. A lot of people in these cases don’t have the luxury of sending in the lawyers like Posh & Becks or Brad and Angelina. <p>

A decent actor can do nothing if his director has an appalling script, thinks Luthor is who fans want as a villain and has done nothing of any REAL worth since the Usual Suspects. His X-Men outings were passable, they're not the benchmark that anyone should use for super-hero material today. SUPER man...the clue is in the name...the action, the peril, the whole nine yards needs to be SUPER...we don't want exposition and touchy feely blatherings. Give the big S something to hit that will hit him back. We're still waiting for a true comicbook movie.

Movie who has the supes face. I wish supes face was CGI but ZS failed to make the lip play on CGI manhatten work. He would need some serious King James Cameron info to make it work all the time. No one really looks like supes with a perfect complexion. So that's why i wish the face was cgi I guess. But it would take a real talent to pull it off. Manhatten failed on the lip play, and even the new CGI CLU as far as we know has a lip jaw issue. Well in the last trailer he did, maybe it was fixed. Benjamin Button still holds the "Got it Right" award. I dont like Brandons face. It isn't Reeves it still looks too young to me. Superboy like.

I'm not a huge fan of Nolan either, but let's see if he can't exec produce better than he directs ("Memento" being the exception to his rather unspectacular directing resume). by cushing1967

The News of the World and The Sun are reprehensible pieces of crap – they’ve never been good but in recent years, as newspapers have become less and less relevant in a world of rolling 24 Hour News Channels and the Internet they have lost any semblance of journalistic intent at all. Both are designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator and usually hit the mark with scandalous ‘expose’s’ on celebrities who have fucked a prostitute, had an affair, taken drugs or whatever. They do this with a fake air of ‘moral outrage’ but it is done because that’s what the people want (not all of them but enough to make these strong market leaders.) They both ‘decided’ who their readership should vote for in the last General Election and there was absolutely no hint of unbiased political reporting. They hack peoples phones and to find out the next ‘juicy scandal’ and quite frankly they are a blight on society.<p>They get their ‘Showbiz’ gossip by trawling websites and reporting forum scuttlebug as fact and they get as much right as they get wrong in these types of story but they still are horrible publications.

The reason will continue to be Hollywood's general belief that such things "confuse" the idiotic populace who will see this and not understand why the story does not seem to continue from the last movie. In reality, I don't think people care. BUT, they may more logically think that people who didn't like the old flick will believe this is a sequel when they see a new actor.<p>Remember people, while all us geeks will see this movie knowing for years before that it is a reboot, but other people who see movies don't follow any of this stuff.

BUT.... <p> He needs to bulk up, and I mean a lot. he was a pretty good Chris Reeve clone down to the mannerisms which is a good thing. He's never going to steal it from Reeve but it's good move to get someone that the fans sort of recognise in Reeve back in the role. <p> At least Bryan Singer won't get a chance to play with his balls this time ;) <p> One of the set rumours :)

Split Routh as Kent Vs Routh as Supes

    by jack Bauer

Routh as Kent was so so, no he does not have the acting skills that Chris had but the fact that many on here liked him just proves he was to many ok in the role.<p> The scene where he's in the bar with Jimmy just before he see's Lois is in danger was a pretty good take on the Reeve Kent. <p> Routh as Supes..<p> Not bad, not as many mannerisms and solidness that Reeve showed from the very start but not too shabby at all. The aircraft rescue scene when he comes on board was pretty good, enough Reeve and a bit of his own take. Sadly the story was dire, it lacked action and punch, I don't blame Routh for that.

    Superman The Movie

    by NightArrows

As much hate as there is for Returns, the original Superman hasn't aged well at all. It was one of my favourite films as a kid. Reeve WAS Superman for me. The film viewed now? Ugh. Hackman is a fucking HORRIBLE Luthor. Ned Rape Victim Beatty is the Jar Jar Binks of the day, and Margot Kidder has all the sex appeal of one of Marge's sisters from the Simpsons. Reeve is the only reason that movie works (and the early scenes with Ma and Pa Kent). He sells it. Reeve coupled with Williams' score? Brilliant. That score is probably one of the best ever. I don't even consider the next 3 Superman films because they are filled with even more suck.

    by jack Bauer

I'm most likely a fair bit older than most on here so I remember the "You'll believe a man can fly" posters from the day and the full page rainbow advert in the Evening Standard at the time. <p> Being a massive comic head as a teen I was soo soo looking forward to Superman and I have to say I was not disappointed at all. The cheesyness of Hackmans Lex was great for that time (I really don't think it's fair attack a film based on todays world), Otis was a laugh and Ned pulled it off. The little sly look back from the oaf as he saw a cop being pushed to his death under a train was spot on, oaf but nasty. <p> Ack, the one cast member I must admit to not liking was Margot Kidder, her with a ciggie poking out of it is the most unsexy look I can think of, she's just got a 'dirty' or cheap look. <p> The score was / IS amazing, probably Williams best ever and Yes, it should return.<p> Sadly the rest of the films became more comical with only 2 being really worth a watch of both versions of it out there. <p> I can't describe fully how disappointed I was at 3 onwards, they were no more than pay days for the now bored Reeve and with how they were played I can't say I blame him.

To attack a film from the 70's based on today's world. Look at the films from the 70's and what they explored. They were dark and gritty and dove into the dark corners of the human condition. That's not to say Superman should have been dark and gritty, but the direction they took with Luthor and Otis was fucking ridiculous. And while I understand it was the first real superhero movie, it still reeks of too much camp.

The opening 10 minutes of that script is pretty phenominal. A MASSIVE, full-blown Bruce Timmesque, city-flattening fight between Superman and (essentially) Zod. Superman is losing pretty badly. He is bruised and bloodied. "Zod" lures him into an underground bunker and we close in on Superman's face melt into absolute horror at what he sees there. But has no juice. Note his lack of substantive roles since then. Charisma is important for actors, especially if they're being asked to prop up a "tentpole." You have to look at Superman from the angle of the day, the film was a big call, someone was making huge claims about making a man fly etc, also there was money being poured at it to get the big stars onboard so in the end it needed desperately to get bums on seats at the cinema. <p> They took a brave choice picking an unknown and the film was going to have to stand around him soley, this was a Supes film and he had to be able to make it fly. <p> So no risks were taken, everything was kept for a full family audience so yes it was camp but it was camp that was ok at the time. <p> So thats why I when a film is reviewed from todays world and morals, there are some films that manage to blend well even now but many films are simply a thing of the time and should be reviewed as such. <p> Personally I'd love a Dark Knight adaption of Batman, the pained old Batman living in a world of pain and hate being brutal to those that get in his way, no 'bifff' 'bam' or 'kapow' here! <p> that with the interaction of the older Supes coming in to bring his old friend to task, now THAT would be a great film.

Stalking does not exist in this dojo

    by Cobra--Kai

<p>"Stop with the fucking stalking shit. It's a theme that should have been explored."<p> Riiiiight... cos I guess that's what all those wide-eyed 8 year olds are expecting to see when they go see a SUPERMAN movie?<p> Fuck it, why not chuck Superman in with the stalker-sub-genre. Have it play in a double-bill with that one where Robin Williams plays the guy who works in a photo developing booth and spunks all over one families pics.<p> "It's a theme that should have been explored" No. You fucking idiot. by Steve Rogers

...and any part of the new film that links to it is tainted by association. I've nothing against Routh but the guy was doing an impersonation of Christopher Reeve playing Superman more than actually just playing the character. A new broom would be a good thing. Whatever happens, there MUST be a new Lois Lane! Bosworth was AWFUL! Erica Durance won't get the job but she is at least smokin' hot.

I understand that perspective of it, it happens today more often than not. A movie that could be what it should be becomes instead what it needs to be to appeal to the suits and the broad majority of theatre goers. I don't condone that mentality though because some of the best films are those that took risks. And most of the films we bitch about now are films that sat on the fence and were lazy. There is much I can look past in Superman, but there's only so much you can forgive when trying to watch a film and still be as into it as you were when you first saw it, in my case as a kid. And like I said, what they did right, they REALLY did right, the score and Reeve etc.

Reboots have a way of retaining previous drafts

    by RETURN_of_FETT

Even though Batman Begins started from scratch, it has similarities to the fan script WB really loved and was showing around called "Batman: The Frightening".</p><p>That was an EXCELLENT Batman script. It was definitely aimed at adults and was even kind of gory in places.</p><p>It starts off with Batman locked up in Arkham Asylum as a patient. He still has his mask on because the Doctor says that he has so identified with Batman that to take the mask off would cause a complete break with reality. I can't quite remember if the rest of the film is a flashback, but I seem to recall him getting broken out, perhaps by Alfred. Anyway, the rest of the script is about Batman chasing Scarecrow and running down his own demons let loose by Scarecrow's gas. It's a real page-turner, you should track it down.

dilemma of whether to use your powers for good or evil. It was a nice little test of Superman's character. <P>As for exploring the magnitude of Superman's powers, what, you didn't see him save a jumbo jet from crashing into earth? Moving faster than a speeding bullet to save the two security guards from getting shot? Taking a bullet in the eyeball without even flinching? Using x-ray vision to check if Lois was okay? Freezing an explosion with his breath? Lasering shards of glass with his eyes? Oh, and LIFTING A FUCKING CONTINENT INTO OUTER SPACE?!!!!!<P>I dunno what fucking movie you watched, Cobra--Kai, but I think your memory may need some repair! Did Superman kiss you?

In case you guys noticed, Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. have been keeping shut about the new Batman villain for a long while. Nobody knows who it is yet. It might not even be Catwoman or the Riddler at all. My guess is that the new Batman villain will be Black Mask 'cause Chris has been talking about using him for a while. Tom Hardy is casted for a main character role, so he might be playing the main villain.

    by The Krypton Kid

He was checking in on her. Lois is the woman he loves. He's been away off-world for five years. He returns and finds that her life has completely changed and he has no opportunity to speak with her: She won't give Clark the time of day and she's fiercely angry at Superman. He loves her, so certainly he needs to know what's going on in her life. ONE TIME he checked in and that was it. That's not stalking and anyone who says it is is misusing the term.

He seems like a boy scout to humans because that is what his role is. He is there to solve the big problems and to be a beacon to the rest of us to stand up and be better people, and to solve OUR own problems in a better fashion than we normally do. On his own he has to deal with a multitude of problems that yes, we would all face in his place. He can't show it because, as was said, he is a shinning example of what a Superhero should be, but he's far from perfect. Superman gets a lot of hits, that's for sure. I think it has more to do with that it's so easy to fuck up Superman and there is a LONG behind the scenes history of bizarreness in getting a new film to the screens. Superman Returns just piles on top of that and makes the subject even more interesting to talk about because there are some exceptionally stupid mother fuckers walking around that have no idea what the character of Superman is supposed to be, including Bryan Singer.

Besides, Hercules seems like he would endorse Hugo Chavez if he ran as a "Democrat." <p>As for the report: I just hope that they can find someone other than Routh to play Supes. First off I can't see a director like Nolan casting a non-talent like Megan Fox. Secondly I don't see a studio going with anyone that isn't a big name after the only so-so box-office and critical reception of Superman Returns. Neither of these casting stories sounds true.

I not sure why AICN staff is so hung up on Routh returning

    by TooSoon

Sure you guys have met him on a few occasions and I bet he's a real nice, charismatic guy and you consider him to be a friend. But there needs to be a complete break from Singer's Superman. He's too tied to that particular universe. It would be too weird to see Routh there with different actors playing the other roles in a different universe of Superman. And if Snyder decides to return to Singer's storyline of Superman complete with Superkid, I'm done with Superman films. Singer made a critical mistake and that is to make a direct continuation of Donner's Superman storyline. The best course of action would be to adopt the spirit and quality of Donner's Superman, but it needs to be a fresh new Superman universe.

    Superman the Stalker –

    by cushing1967

I didn’t like Superman Returns, I thought it was boring and bland and only a few scenes stand out for me. However, I don’t get this crap about Superman the Stalker especially as it’s not a new thing – I mean we’re talking about a being who listens to Lois talking about the ‘man she loves’ and then acts on that. Superman’s actions towards Lois are ultimately informed by her being unaware of his other identity. So, in any Superman story where Lois is unaware that Clark is Superman then he is in effect stalking her.<p> If you chose to go down that route of thinking about the movie then you have to about the character.<p>I don’t choose to myself, I hated the scene in SR because I felt it was incredibly out of place in a Superman film because the character has enough about him that you don’t need angsty love stories – that’s my problem with it. It feels like the latest episode in a long running television series rather than a Superman film.

I guess you are still a virgin, or your sexual experience is limited to Palmela Handerson because on a daily fucking basis people have sex, and you know what? It doesn't always dawn on them that they could impregnate their partner based on the time of the woman's cycle they are having sex, or even the fact that the woman COULD HAVE USED BIRTH CONTROL THAT DIDN'T FUCKING WORK. As for the panty remark, if he was so pure and untouchable in the morals department he wouldn't have tried to see her underwear even when asked by Lois, correct? by Datascream

Routh was in an extention of the Donnerverse. Since this is a fresh start audiences will be put off and confused by the change in story "what happened with his kid?" However all that could happen anyways. I dunno maybe it could work out. But he represents those versions of superman, so I'd imagine the studios would want to seperate from it as much as possible.

Move As Far Away As Possible From Donner / Reeves

    by LaserPants

As the EPIC FAILURE of SINGERMAN REGURGITATES amply demonstrates, most of the world is WAY over the dated-to-the-point-of-absurdity Donner / Reeves movies and is looking for a new take on the character. So, if they're smart they'll keep the soundtrack and jettison everything else. (I just hope they keep Supes in the boy scout mode. He shouldn't be "dark and brooding", that's Batman's job.

It would be great if Durance came along too, but Welling has played Clark Kent for ten years and he more than anyone deserves a shot at this role. He was great on the 200th episode of Smallville Friday night. It can still be a reboot, no need to be beholden to Smallville continuity, but Welling is the best choice for Superman.

I don't want to dwell on SUPERMAN RETURNS cos I really think it screwed the pooch by being boring - the one thing you can't do with a film that's ultimately aimed at kids.<p> But what was the deal with the love triangle? Did Cyclops guy think the kid was actually his or did he know it was Supermans? Same with Lois - did she fuck Superman and Cyclops guy in the same week and so she didnt know who the father was?<p> Cos Superman can read minds - surely as soon as he met Lois or Cyclops he'd know that they have his kid???<p> Pls someone who knows this film better than I do explain...

Ultimately - how can they use Routh?<p> Surely the audience will say 'where is his kid?', or 'where is that scheming bitch who kept the kid from him?'<p> They've already pushed a round peg into a square hole as far as the continuity goes - they can't stretch it any further by using Routh again - but in another rebooted universe.

    The routh argument explained

    by brobdingnag

The reason he is so divisive is that the group who values acting talent dislikes him and the group that values looks like him. This has a lot to do with the large percentage of the gay community that are involved in Sci-fi. The fans that like him as Superman are mostly female or gay males, and want him for the same reason Singer did...he wanted to fuck him. The people who oppose him are mostly straight males who value his looks less, and are basing their opinion on his "talent". It's sad that an actor's looks or "the fuck factor" is so influential but it is, just like the straight males tend to be a lot more forgiving of an actresses talent flaws if she is hot. It's the exact same thing.

Man of Steel is intended to be a reboot, that means no connections to the Superman Returns or Smallville universes. Logically, that means no to both Routh and Welling. Nolan produced an academy award level picture; he and Snyder should aim as high for Superman: Man of Steel. That means finding actors who can actually act as well as look the part. And if can look like the Alex Ross Superman, all the better.

Superman: Man of Steel should be a period movie.

    by Nautilus_nrm1

The new movie needs to be set in the 80s or earlier; I'd prefer setting the story in the 50s. This needs to occur so that the movie audience will realize this Superman story is a new story not tied to the old movies. That way you don't have a confused audience asking "Where's his kid from the last movie?" or "Does this take place after Superman 4?". Plus, people dig period movies, especially those in the 40s, 50s, or 60s.

    by CeejayNightwing

Brandon Routh is married to the actress Courtney Ford who played the daughter of the serial killer and reporter fucking Quinn in last seasons DEXTER! (yeah we got to see her tits and watch her pussy get eaten to orgasm!) Brandon's superman was ten times less cheesy than Christopher Reeves but his Clark Kent was just as stupid! Brandon also had a way better physique than Reeve and had his flying motions mush more convincing that Reeves too. Anyone who's seen last seasons CHUCK can see he can act, definitely enough to play superman which is barely demanding but naturally the script has to be better than what they delivered with Superman Returns. No more Lex Luthor stories and for God's sake get a Lois Lane that's closer to Sandra Bullock than goofy, trashy Margot Kidder! Someone like the voluptuous Haley Atwell for example.

But when it happens, it happens. The truth of the matter is, i0'm far more flexible about movie then the vast majority of the geeks here. Hamm might be a good Supes, but a TERRIBLE Kent

    by Wolfman Nards

There is no way Jon Hamm can pull off a nerdy nobody. I had no sentimental attachment to the Donner movies and no sexual attraction to Routh. I just thought he was good with the material he was given. Then again, I thought SR was a good movie - minus the kid. What I think Routh did best was he gave off an "other worldly" vibe. And I don't see a Reeves connection with him at all.

Reboot = New Actor for Supes

    by Nautilus_nrm1

Some of us aren't Routh or Welling haters. Aside from the kid, I was okay with the Superman Returns, and I've been liking the way Smallville has evolved. It should have been re-titled Metropolis or Justice League however. My point is still, if Nolan and Snyder are set on rebooting the franchise, they're not going to go with an actor tied to another "Superman universe". Its makes perfect sense to want to recast. They'll either go with an relatively unknown actor, or they'll choose someone who has been rising to the A-lists. My bet is the latter, like Nolan did with Christian Bale. Christian Bale would be nowhere without his performance in American Psycho - its what opened him up to the big roles. So there, go and speculate... who ready to break out and go big?

In 2013 heirs take back the rights no matter what

    by Youngblood

Doesn't matter what the movie does. 2013 is THE END. The only way DC is keeping the character or WB is doing more movies is for them to pay big upfront money to buy back the character. WB has NOT been paying the heirs their cut, thanks to Hollywood accounting tricks. Every actor knows not to expect any residuals because of that. Actors negotiate to get their money upfront. The heirs DO NOT TRUST WB to pay them their legal and fair cut. They want to be paid UPFRONT. Time Warner is doing everything it can to weasel out of that. That could cost hundreds of millions of dollars. When Warner is tired of delaying the inevitable and pays out the upfront money, then and only then will more movies be made.

All the fanboys who wanted a reboot. Reboot means back to square one. Square one means 25. It could be worse. Hoody boy in Superman: Earth One is 21. The best that can happen is the right actor gets cast so Superman can actually get to his 30s in the sequels. Armie Hammer is that actor. Why do you think I keep going on?

Yea, they need to cast older, someone who looks to be in his early- to mid-thirties. If I was a betting man, Nolan and Snyder are going to us a template similar to Batman Begins.

Reeve was 24 when he was cast but looked older while Lois lane's Margot Kidder was even a few years older. Routh was 24, was the right Clark Kent but frankly looked like a Superboy instead of man and was teamed with a woman that could've been a postergirl for young pregnant teens. Sometimes it's all about presence. Some have it, some don't.

That's why MOS is being made and why it must succeed. If it's not in "production" by 2011 the heirs sue. If MOS isn't out by the end of 2012 the heirs sue. And then it has to be settled. MOS has to make money, not just for general business but to pay the lawsuit. Pay the lawsuit and Superman keeps on going and most people won't even notice. Don't pay (a Welling MOS bombs) and Superman is dead.

Yes, News of the World is pretty notorious for fact checking, but that is not to say it is entirely misleading. They pay pretty well for their stories and have some regular and very accurate sources from within the industry that feed them with stories before even the snouts at web based pages get a whiff. I was a junior reporter there in the early 80's, straight out of university, and one of my first jobs was writing up a feed from David Prowse, about how major characters from Jedi were going to die. Of course, that proved inaccurate, but for whatever reason, the story did originate from him. The problem is, they often recieve information so early that the involved parties haven't even rubber stamped yet. I know for a fact that their policy on low end Showbiz stories - simply to fill space, which this is - is never to check for fear of denial and hence having to drop the item. That is pretty much the policy of all British red-tops. On another tabloid newspaper, which will remain nameless, I know that a piece regarding a new stand-alone Matrix movie, involving none of the original cast, apart from an option to reveal Keanu Reeves as some kind of deity at the conclusion, was scuppered recently because the reporter involved chose to follow up and was met with the inevitable denial. It doesn't mean it isn't true. And for the record, I thought Brandon was great in an otherwise terribly misjudged Superman movie.

    Snyder, the lawsuit

    by Rommel Catuncan

Zack Snyder and his wife were interviewed in London for the UK premiere of the Gahoole movie and when asked about whether Brandon would be back his wife nudged him and she said it was "way too early to discuss any of that." I think Zack did initially say that Routh's return is "unlikely" (he said it VARIETY) but then with the campaigning for Routh he doesn't want to make any set statements about casting for the part yet, including Routh. I think Snyder doesn't really want Routh, but he is saying nothing now to appease Routh fans, which may include some studio people. But I hope he ultimately gets to decide what's best. <p> And yes, WB have to make a movie before 2012 or else they can be sued by the Siegels, but in 2013, Siegel and Shuster will win back the entire original rights to Superman and WB will have to pay a license fee to the Siegel and Shuster estates if they want to do anything else with the character.

I'm against the potential casting of Brandon Routh in Zack Snyder's SUPERMAN. Superman Returns was an artistic failure (and that's being kind), and certainly did not live up to Warner's commercial expectations. I believe the slate has to be wiped clean. You can't have the audience wondering "what happened to Superman's son?" or "why are all the other characters being played by different actors?". As Hollywood already knows, never overestimate the intelligence of the average movie-goer.

late for the party, but I've been saying the same things ever since the movie came out - that the 'stalker' and 'deadbeat dad' complaints are ridiculous, juvenile, and from braindead meatheads who have never had a date or, god forbid, a child. By no definition does Supes' act like a stalker. James Marsden's character was fantastic - still love the bit about 'how'd you get here?' 'I flew'. In Singer's version, Supes was more of a cypher for the other characters to play off, and it was about how he was returning to reclaim his position as earth's savior, so that by the end, he's restored, ready for the kick-ass sequel that never happened.

    ELGATO73.....but the interesting thing is

    by southafricanguy

that I wonder if they would be able to not consider Routh as we now know this film is being rushed into production due to the clicking clock Warners/DC have over their heads to get another Supes film made. It would appear they wont have a huge amount of time to search for the perfect actor (and imho Supes is one of those chracters that needs to be played by the perfect actor for the part). And All previous directors (Donner, Ratner, McG, Singer) have spoken about how much trouble they all had finding the right actor, and how many actors turn the part down for a variety of reasons. And since Routh has already done it and is thus prepared, and he was pretty good imho (I know this part is subjective), I do wonder if they will be forced to seriously consider him anyway....

Superman is both a Man and an Olympian, Routh was neither. I don't care if an actor is gay or not, but Singer styled and directed him as a fey underwear model-like pansy with no character or grit and that representation is indelibly stamped in the viewing public's memory. REBOOT! You have to look past your petty tastes in his looks and charms and accept he is a terrible Superman, he does not have the gravity or manhood to support the mythos.

    by thomasjarvis

I've never even seen an episode of 'Mad Men' in my life, but watching Jon Hamm appear on numerous talk shows, I'm beginning to see why he would make an appealing Supes. But it seems it will never happen, because the script is aleardy locked in as an origin story, about Clark Kent deciding whether he even wants to becocome Superman, which implies and age of 25 or under. UNLESS, they totally think outside the box, and have clark not even decide to first donn the cape untill he's at lest 35. Which would be a brilliant move, actually. YES!!! That's how they should do it. If it were up to me, they would make the visual style and overall tone of this film an art-decco mixture of the Max Fleischer animated shorts, 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow', and 'Dark City'. It doesn't literally have to be set in the 1940s, just give it a 1940's art deco feel having it take place in its own unique timeless reality. Like 'Dark City' or even 'The Shadow' (regardless of how lackuster that particular adaptation may well have been). Make it a weird blend of art-deco 40's and bright technicolor 1950's americana. Like Lynch's Blue Velvet, it's a comfortable and safe all-American 'Laeve It to Beaver' cultre that is suddenly threatened by a hideous, inexplicable evil, that only the Man of Steel can face down...

    by thomasjarvis

Bosworth is what ruined 'Superman Returns' for me. How could Singer possibly have thought that Bosworth would make a better replacement for Margot Kidder in his pseudo-DonnerVerse? Makes zero sence. As pointed out by another talkbacker on a previous Supes-related news item, I wouldn't be surpsrised if Singer wanted Parker Posey for Lois but studio heads wanted someone more "bankable" for the younger demograpic like Bosworth so he gave Posey the role of Luther's assistan as sort of consolation prize. I personally still feel that Pamela Adlon from 'Californication' would have made the ideal replacement for Margot Kidder, but certainly Parker POsey would have been far more fitting than Kate freakin' Bosworth...

I think if Posey was cast as Lois, Bosworth would've sufficed as Luthor's assistant. So basically just have them trade places! Also, I don't know if you've ever watched 'Californication' or 'Lucky Louie', but if the goal was indeed to make a true hommage to the Donner film(s), then Pamela Aldon would've been the perfect actress to cast as a true replacement for Margot Kidder. It's like, if you took Kidder circa 1978 (who certainly was admittedly more than a little on the homely side) and made her petite, twenty-seven times more attractive and actually...gasp...sexy, you'd have Pamela Adlon!

That's a fascinating story about Prowse; a hidden piece of movie history. While the end product may have proven the story incorrect, Lucas had, at one point, considered having Han Solo sacrifice himself in order to destroy the second Death Star at the end of JEDI. So, I don't think the man was lying. <p>Now, I'm curious to know if you have any other stories to you may like to share.</p>

I'd love to see something new this time, something that cut away completely from the old portrayals.

    The Bulletproof Eyeball

    by DVaderRIP

The problem I have with that scene is that, when he shot him in the eyeball, it just fell to the floor, like all the momentum of the bullet was absorbed by Supermans eyeball. WTF? It should have ricocheted away or something. I'm sure it sounded cool on paper, but it came across as nonsense. In the donner-verse, not only can Superman go back in time, but he can also pull giant plastic sheets out of his chest, erase women's memory with a kiss, and now absorb the momentum of a bullet with his eyeball.

    by DVaderRIP

Jon Hamm is too old for the role, bottom line, and he is smart enough to know it. What people don't think about on this site is that it's not just about what he looks like now - it's also about whether or not he'll still look good in 10 years, after a three picture cycle. At that point, the guy will be nearly 50. Forget it. Same goes for people who talk about Monica Belluci as Wonder Woman. Yes, she is hot as hell for her age, but she is around 20 years too old to play Diana. Bottom line, you need someone in their mid 20s. Arguably, now even Routh is too old.

    by RETURN_of_FETT

for a straight to video animated film......</p><p>Actually....even then it was pretty retarded. I mean Bruce Timm has done some amazing stuff with home video. The only thing I can think of that comes close to the rampant retardation of Superman Returns in a STV Superman film was when Supermantakes Doomsday to outer space....and instead of chucking him into the sun...decides to slam him into the center of Metropolis probably killing thousands of people! That scene would have been right at home in Superman Returns.</p><p>But let me address the one scene most people like in SR, the plane rescue. You may not realize it...but that scene is retarded too.</p><p>We've seen Superman rescue plunging planes before in both the original film and a deleted scene from Superman II in which he rescues a Concorde. Supes knows how to do this. You lift up from the bottom and fly it in. Seems pretty simple right?</p><p>For some un-fucking-believable reason, this time Superman decides to pull up on the tippy-tip of an obviously stressing plane wing....until it (surprise of surprises) BREAKS OFF! I'm dead tired of his invulnerabilities and escalading powers. The way the writers of the movies and TV shows have com up to try to inject danger to Superman has became absurd. Thanks for the word.<br><br>Well, for me, all this situation about the new Superman movie is a half-empty glass, if you get my meaning. You know i'm a huge Nolan groupie, but the decision to hire Snyder as director disapoints me to no end. No, i can't see much of a good thing from it. Besides, Nolan cannot go about being in charge of both Superman and Batman 3. He's only human. And Batman 3 most certainly will be a big movie much like THE DARK KNIGHT was, if not bigger. How can he handle both? No, i'm certain that from now on, it's Snyder who's the man of the projec,t and this bodes very ill for the movie. Yes, i'll watch it because there's still that slimer of hope that nolan's interference, however small, might yeld more good then bad and outweights the usual Snyder's imbecilities and crapiness. Superman Returns actually PISSED ME OFF!

    by RETURN_of_FETT

I haven't felt like that since Shyamalan's The Village!</p><p>There were very few enjoyable things about Superman Returns. I liked the guy playing Jimmy, he was funny. I thought Routh's Christopher Reeve Clark portrayal was entertaining if really old-fashioned. Just about everything else was at least annoying, if not completely putrid. Lois Lane is a bitch who apears to act like she's in the 30's serial. Brandon is skinny and in a gay pride parade suit. Langella...I don't know what the fuck he was doing. I think he thought he was in a horror film. Cyclops was solid as he always is but his character isn't fleshed out very much and he always feels like he's just there to keep Supes and Lois from slapping uglies. The kid is pretty annoying. Lex needs to shut the fuck up and I wanted to slap the sneer off his bitch's face.</p><p>Superman decides to take a tour around the galaxy for no real reason then returns to find everything completely fucked. He gets all weepy and emo while stalking his ex and being clueless to the fact that she has a son the exact same age he would be if he were his. But that never even dawns on him because Singer's Superman is so fucking stupid that when he overhears Lois telling her husband that she never really loved Superman, he can't see what ANYBODY can, that she's just saying that to calm her husband's fears. So he flies off crying like a fuckin' bitch.</p><p>Meanwhile Lex has decided to destroy half the world population in the hopes that the other half will buy the worst property ever fucking seen. When asked why the world wouldn't just blow him the fuck up, he says he's safe....because he weilds a crystal that....makes icebergs. And then we find out that Lex (who mysteriously dresses like Dick Tracey), the greatest criminal mind of our time....forgot to gas up the fucking helicopter and gets stuck on an island. You know...one of those Atlantic islands that are closer than the just-offshore iceberg. All this while Superman lifts a continent into space surrounded by Kryptonite and having a Kryptonite shard shoved into his fucking ribs. Yeah that jibes with what we saw in Donner's Superman!</p><p>FUCKING CHRIST what a piece of SHIT!

I trust Nolan's input regardless of how more or less he is involved in said project, but I also believe that Zac will deliver the goods especially when it comes to utilizing superman's powers and fight scenes to gel/blend with a more solid storyline.<p>My problem with Hancock is that the movie came off a bit schzophrenic.Meaning, it didnt know if it wanted to be a comedy or drama.Good concept but wasted effort especially during the last 15 minutes with the dumb romantic subplot about lost loves.I saw something great during the first 20 minutes of the film. The idea of a fucking super powered jerk trying to fix his public image is a refreshing concept. And for the record, it should have been more comedic but not over the top like some Chris Rock movie.<p>I loath SR mostly b/c it went against the character's mythos and rehashed elements from the 1st film. A total artistic cop out IMO.Singer, who gained props for the 2nd XMen film, just screwed up the most iconic Superhero on celluloid and not even after valkyrie (a good film that i own a blu-ray copy of.)I have heard much of him ever since.<P>Not only do I recommend STAS, but checkout Justice League Unlimited as well.It gave me the impression of why Superman is SUPERMAN.

    by riskebiz

To replace him with someone who he undoubtably beat out the first time there was a casting call is an insult. Routh ruled as Superman (and in Scott Pilgrim) and I would really look forward to a new Superman movie starring him. Replacing him would be replacing for replacing's sake and you wouldn't find a better candidate than Routh. IN FACT...I'd also cameo him in Batman 3 and Green Lantern as reporter Clark Kent (which they ought to have done in the Dark Knight).

While heavily influenced by the John Byrne version of Superman (which is my favorite) it still had enough aspects of the Silver Age and Golden Age versions of Superman. The Superman from the animated series didn't have limitless powers, in fact, he struggled mightly against most of his villains, and needed a suit to breath in deep space for a long period of time. The Lois Lane in that cartoon, that Lex Luthor, all perfect.

I really don't understand your point. The first Superman was really good and the second one was a worthy follow up. But the problem is, it's too hard to make a Superman story that doesn't rehash itself. Since Superman is pretty much all powerful you have to do something to take his powers away. They've done it in every movie. It's just old. But "tacky" and "dated"? That's a stupid criticism...

Good Superman vs. Evil Superman. That was some epic shit! And it did have Brainiac at the end, even though it was a pretty fucked up mixing of tone by that point. It went from goofy comedy to almost horror when Brainiac cyborgizes that chick's body. But hey, it was better than Superman IV, HOLY FUCK was that bad! Interestingly it was supposed to be about Bizarro, but that plot point got completely cut out of the film because it came out so horrifically bad. It looked Superman beating up a retard! He's good. I have enjoyed this season's Smallville quite a bit. Welling brings a nice understanding of the character and Erica D. as Lois hits all the right notes. He should get a shot in the tights.

You don't have to take Superman's powers away

    by Hipshot

You can create an opposing force equal to his challenge. Christ, in sixty years of Superman comics, books, television, and so forth, you don't think there are a dozen good stories where they figured this out? They make the mistake of not looking at this wealth of material, and keep rehashing the same two or three ideas. Pitiful.

A restored METROPOLIS is a must for me. Cool news indeed. The only problem is that now i'll have to doubledip on the movie, because i have bought the previous Kino DVD. By the way, the first time i saw the complete movie, it was in a theater where there was a life piano performance plying the movie's real soundtrack. How cool is that? Very, very cool.

Superman is too powerful. The way the writers have come up to create tension while still mantaining Supe's escalading powers is just ludricous and counter-productive. Supes is a fucking god, and who can relate to a god, anyway? Take up a notch or two, i say. Stop making superman invulnerable, stop making Superman being able to lift islands and continents, stop superman being invulnerable to all arms and weapons on Earth, stop superman for being able to breed in space, stop superman to be able to fly without getting tired, just stop with the god powers nonsense bullshit.

That's what i'm talking about. Superman stopping the airplane's fall, and having a bit of a trouble with, that's how Superman's powers should be seen and portait, and should evne be the height and the full extent of his power. The continent lifting, is WHAT SHOULDN'T BE portaited in Superman, be it movie or comic or TV show. There has to be a limit to what he can do, or else there's nothing to relate to him. Superman having limited powers can fuel more drama. Really, consider the second movie, and which part of that movie was when people actually felt sorry and concerned for Superman? When he lost his powers and got a beating from the big redneck in that artic coffee shop. That's what i'm talking about.

Do absolutely check out Superman:TAS. Besides being really fun, it does what you will like by putting a cap on Superman's powers. For example he cant go into space for any length of time without a space suit. And secondly, much like Batman:TAS, its pretty much the perfect portrayal of the character imho...

    by southafricanguy

I am pretty much in agreement with you about the Donner films, and that there rreally has been no definitive Superman film yet ala the one two punch that is BB and TDK. I would like to see them use Doomsday as one of the villains purely becasue then they have a villain that can not only hurt Supes, but can kill him, all without needing to involve Kryptonite yet again....

just yet what kind of film we re going to get based on how little info we have. Snyder is directing, but if the script by Goyer is truly good, and Nolan is involved in the script, and in the creative decisons, then it could be a pretty good film imho....

    Asimov RE:Singer

    by Stalkeye

I (also) give Singer props for Ususal Suspects (great ensemble cast)Apt Pupil, not so much. Part of me is pissed that he bailed out on the 3rd XMen,(and we ended up with Ratner?!?) only to direct an underperforming adaptation of Superman.Seeing his track record from Suspects to X-2, I had great expectations but unfotunately, the end product failed miserably.Oh, and I respect your right to trash Jar Trek or Zac Snyder since me bashing Stalkerman or anything else I would take umbrage with is my right as well.<p>Fair game.

How the hell ya been? From what I have read, Superman was Singer's "dream project" so when offered, he jumped at the opportunity and took (for the most part) James Marsden with him.He orginally pitched the storyline/remake to Richard Donner and the feedback was positive. As for FOX, I wouldn't be surprised if they fucked him over be it a payscale or royalties, thus making it more easier for him to bail out of the xmen sequel.<p>BTW I noticed that you too are a fan of Korean cinema, any recent recommendations? (I only watched the first 15 minutes of Mother via Netflix, but temporarly lost interest.)

partly because I live in Korea, thus I see them wether I want to or not. Im doing good dude, thanks for the info re Singer and Fox. I would highly recommend THirst (Bat in Korean) a seriously fucked up Vampire film that has a jet black sense of humour, and loads of sex and gore. There is shadow crime, which is an excellent murder mystery. Basically Its a Korean Sherlock Holmes, with the main characters being a private detective, and his friend a doctor. Also, there is a good time travel fantasy film called Woochi which is nothing deep, but is quite fun and entertaining...

What's that south korean movie which many call it a remake of MAN ON FIRE? It sounds kickass and badass. A south korean Man On Fire movie has all potentials to be absolute mocie badass joy. I mean, look at what the koreans did with the basi trope of "this time it's vengence time" and made A BITTERSWEET LIFE out of it.<br><br>I liked SUPERMAN RETURNS. It's not a movie i'm in any hurry to rewatch, but it's hardly the monstruosity that many geeks claim to be. And as you, i think Routh was great as Superman, he looks the part and he can really act, as also seen in CHUCK. Routh looks like Superman, and the blue eye contacts didn't phased me. I mean, he's supposed to be a bloody alien, anyway.
