Would You Let Mel Gibson Give You A Tattoo??

Merrick here...
The New York Post says that Mel Gibson will be appearing in the "cameo" role of a Bangkok tattooist in Todd Phillips' sequel to THE HANGOVER. The Post says a Bangkok set has already been erected on the Warner Bros. lot, and it's not clear if Gibson's appearance will in any way reference the recent issues that have made the star highly visible in media across the globe. A related note to the men in our audience: "You should just fucking smile and blow me!" didn't work out so well when I tried the line on my woman. Not well at all. Must've been my delivery.

Mel Gibson is the definition of self destructive genius

    by antonphd

His films are fantastic. His acting is always great even when he's phoning it in for a $25 million paycheck(LW4). But he can be a mother fucker. He probably needs a good old fashioned ass kicking, but he's too rich for anyone to have the balls to do that to him. But maybe the public hate is actually getting through to him. He has a long road to redemption but if he's doing a cameo as a Bangkok tattooist then I am guessing that he's decided to start walking down that road. Good for him. I hope he gets to the end of the road.

It does taint art - but it gets back to the nature of art..

    by Quin the Eskimo

Art is a statement, of the world as the artist views it or as it should be. So we can't help but bring that baggage to a movie or whatever. That doesn't mean the technical aspects of art cannot be appreciated though, so mental D is right in that regard. However, you can't look at something without any baggage, that's just counter to human nature, we need to put things in context.

Some really funny stuff going on here...

    by Monroville

It is funny how someone could love BRAVEHEART and (especially) APOCALYPTO but turn around and absolutely hate PASSION OF THE CHRIST. <p> They are all equally violent (and I would say APOCALYPTO is equal to PASSION in that department) but ultimately about how humans deal with it. Like it or not (and whether Mel had to show it or not), the Romans actually did that stuff to millions of people throughout their 1000 year history - Mel did not exaggerate anything. <p> Now one can argue about Caveisel being white with a nice tan, brown contact lenses, etc, but he picked an actor he felt could play the part and as well as someone who could look like a mix between the hasidic Jesus and european Jesus, so everyone would have a familiar face to connect to while retaining some historical accuracy. Even so, the entire movie is a build-up to a punch line: "forgive them father, for they know not what they do." That line cannot have any power if we do not see the physical brutality Jesus goes through, much less the emotional betrayal of those "fair weather friends" who were laying palm branches down just a week prior. <p> The whole point was to show that the real miracle was Jesus' conviction and integrity to his word, and that even the cruelest of physical and mental suffering would not shake him. <p> On a last note, I also found it to be very "(monty) pythonesque" when you had critics like Andy Rooney tearing down the PASSION for its violence, and yet a week later the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake came out, and critics praised it for its creative uses of violence. In other words, a movie where violence was shown to be anything BUT entertaining (but as vile and disgusting and heart breaking) was vile and disgusting with no merit, but the movie where people are torn apart and eaten alive FOR sheer entertainment (and maybe a slight side of social commentary) is praised in how well it entertains us with its violence. <p> There's a thesis paper waiting to be written on that one...

    And regarding Mel Gibson

    by Monroville

While I can hold it against him in that he is a hard-core christian (down to going to latin masses and the like) and frankly "he should know better" than to fool around after making a commitment to a family, I can at least give him credit in that: <p> (1) it does seem that if this has any positive effect, it is that it appears that he may be sticking with his wife for good (due to the tapes being released, and maybe him just realizing that he is officially old and not "sexiest man alive" material anymore. If anything, I think William Holden's character in NETWORK would be an appropriate analogy) <p> (2) Unlike Matthew Broderick (who actually killed 2 people in an automobile accident in Ireland in the mid-1980's and GOT AWAY WITH IT) or John Landis (who, regardless of how culpable he was in the death of Vic Morrow and those 2 vietnamese children, that smug look on his face during the court proceedings alone will earn his place in Hell), HE DIDN'T KILL/RAPE ANYONE. Idiot: yes, Loud mouth asshole: yes. Murderer or rapist: no. <p> So while I do believe that Mel deserves his lumps, I also have no problem with watching his movies, past, present or future, because of the above reasons.

Of course I think fucking kid's is despicable, but that dosen't matter when discussing these things on here, forgiveness or even understanding is the same as advocating and encouraging to some. <p> Someone above said it and I've said it before, not everything is Black and White in fact the world is a shitty grey.

    by lecter1914

I think its relatively easy to seperate and artists from their personal lives. That's just me. However, I did find Jeepers Creepers, Powder, and Jeepers Creepers 2 particularly hard to watch knowing the directors disgusting past. Although I didn't realize it was the same dude when I watched the original Jeepers Creepers, but the sequel was brazenly homoerotic in parts and I'm willing to bet that's no coincidence.

"What if a pedo created a cure for AIDS or cancer, would it boycotted?".<P>Apples and oranges. Someone with AIDS or cancer could well refuse the cure if they had that knowledge, but its a choice between choosing to live and die so most rational people would take it. Experiencing ART is not a matter of life and death. If you're equating watching Death and the Maiden with taking a cure for cancer you are a fucking tool. I have no problem with artists being "bad" people as long as its self-harm. They can be junkies, they can cut off their ear, I have no problem appreciating their work. Pedos/murderers/rapists have crossed a line where it is MORALLY WRONG to enjoy their art. If you have no problem in separating the artist from the art you are a morally fucked up individual. Do you stick on a CD of Gary Glitter's Greatest Hits while watching Death and the Maiden? Wait, don't answer that...

Mental Dominance (I know I'm not supposed to feel the trolls, but

    by Monroville

I can understand not liking some of the FX embellishments (even though they are in essence Jesus' perception, thoughts and imaginations), but if you were a true christian it wouldn't make you vehemently hate the movie. Annoyed, but not hate. <p> But more to the point, while I have been raised as a roman catholic but don't go to church very much, I do not understand how you disagree with the aspect of Jesus "as this thing that was "sent to take all this pain" like a super man": while I believe Jesus was a human being with the spirit of God inside (in that even in the end, he still retained his humanity and did not devolve into cursing the romans or the other people who betrayed him), most if not all christains believe that Jesus "died for our sins" through his complete self-sacrifice. Your statement is a 180@ turnaround from a christain belief. <p> If your statement is that Jesus had a super-human tolerance to pain, then maybe you need to rewatch the movie, because Jim Caveisel looks like he is not really enjoying himself too much. <p> Regardless, considering the amount of rants you post restating the same thing about the PASSION while having completely conflicting love for equally (and one could say unnecessarily) violent films like APOCALYPTO and BRAVEHEART (where the violence IS a part of the entertainment), one could wonder whether you really are christain. <p> Not that it matters in an AICN talkback. To quote the waitress in THE TERMINATOR: "In a 100 years, who's gonna care?"

Just remember: Jesus was a semite too. If there was any criticism (I believe the anti-semite issue was due to "the crowd turning on Jesus" thing), it is that of basic human nature, of which we still see today. Hebrews weren't the only ones capable of betrayal, cowardice or courage (hebrew being the actual name of the people, as "Jew" is a slur word the romans used from the word Judea to call the Israelites. Much as "Nigger" comes from Nigeria, which is one of the many names Europeans gave to carved-out colonies in Africa). <p> On yet another note, has anyone ever noted how Mel never went around to talk shows to explain the movie when it came out? If anything, he simply let the movie bring out what was inside everyone else in their interpretations OF it. In fact, I would say that the PASSION is a brilliant work of art in the chief aspect that: <p> (1) Mel funded it 100% with his own money, when people were telling him it was a waste of time and a money loser. (2) when it turned out to be one of the biggest money EARNERS in movie history, those same people started to hint (maybe rightfully so) that Mel was exploiting Jesus for profit, despite their previous comments. (3) but most importantly, Mel said NOTHING during or after its presentation for the sole purpose of letting the viewer define the movie. And such varied reactions - I wonder if people realize that maybe the entire purpose of the movie was to expose some hidden parts of ourselves (of which we can still see in this talkback some 6 years later)?

    by Monroville

I think it really comes down to: <p> No one wants to see themselves or their group portrayed as capable of doing something that logically and thoughtfully is considered evil. No one wants to confront the idea that if there was a mob (in celebration of a sports-political victory/ in anger of a sports-politica loss) that they could be a part of it, even if they are indeed in the current process of BEING IN A MOB BURNING CARS AND TRASHING OTHER PEOPLE'S BUSINESSES (not yelling, but just emphasizing). Even when confronted with videotapes, people will deny bad behavior just because they don't want to think of the fact that they very well could be the evil everyone else fears or hates.

    Mental Dominance

    by Monroville

Keep in mind that the Bible was written some 400 years after the fact. Granted, a lot was taken from letters from Peter and Paul, and people had a MUCH better memory back then (as they didn't have computers and notebooks to record thoughts and information like we do). Even so, keep in mind the TIME the Bible was officially collected, coallated and written (much less centuries later, when it was actually printed for the masses): if the Holy Roman Empire considered the Jewish/Hebrew people to be the scapegoat for Jesus' death, would it not be possible that such a line as "let his blood be upon us and our children" be in essence an element of "political propaganda" added into the verses as a means of justifying Rome's treatment of the Hebrews?

But you could say most if not all people are in denial with how they play their part in their own lives much less the world. <p> Be it politics, religion or environmentalism (or abortion, etc.): no one wants to take any sort of personal responsibility in their own fate, and thus put it into the hands of God/ Gia/ Government. As a result, they develop mentally into children of a sort, as they complain about how helpless they are to the whims of society even as they demand to live lives dependant upon the money stolen from others, without any inclination to compensate. <p> People cannot complain about being slaves when they in turn vote to become them.

You are right in that the various parts of the Bible were written/spoken for 100s of years before the (I believe) "King James" Bible was written. "The bible is fake"

    by smackfu

The Bible IS fake. It's inherently paradoxical, as is anyone who believes in it. You can't say something is the incontrovertible word of God in one breath, then conveniently ignore and excuse the parts of it that you know in your heart are wrong, ie slavery, marrying children, killing your kids for sassing you, sacrificing a dove at the end of your period (lolbible), not being admitted to Heaven for having a penis injury (lolbible) and all the other crazy, crazy, written-by-a-stupid-monkey things the Bible says.

  • Oct. 18, 2010, 4:29 p.m. CST

    The falacy of the Bible

    by smackfu

is a case of pure, undeniable logic, which can be expressed so basically. Either it's the word of God, and EVERYTHING it says is true, even the crazy stuff, and you must obey EVERYTHING it says, or it's not, and your tendency to pick and choose which parts you believe and which you don't is a clear indication that no matter how much you profess (even to yourself) to believe in it, deep down inside you know it's bullshit.

    this talkback is disgusting

    by Hipshot

So you admire Mel Gibson despite racist, sexist tirades, and decide to tear into Spike Lee to distract attention? So he hates white people? Where is the single thing he has ever said that proves this? The fact that he is racially oversensitive? Makes him an asshole, maybe--but hates white people? He's had a hell of a lot more young white males survive his movies than, say, Clint Eastwood has EVER had young black men survive HIS, but I wouldn't think Eastwood is racist (in fact, I only remember one offhand--"Heartbreak Ridge" and Mario Van Peebles). Spike has written and directed tons of white people, who seem to enjoy working with him. Where is this "hate white people" nonsense? You can't wave your hands like that and have us not notice Gibson's sick tirade. I'm perfectly willing to acknowledge that he's human, but accusing everyone of liking different racial groups differently (maybe you and your friends, but kindly refrain from assuming you know the hearts of all people) just to defend your heroes is sick and childish.

    Intellectualizing Racism

    by SanityKaos

I'm sick and tired of people trying to intellectualizing racism. You can't intellectualize a concept that's not intelligent. Someone says something racist then someone calls them out on it. Then the first person says,"Oh well, you're not perfect either!" What does being perfect have to do with anything? Hating an entire race because they don't look like you (or have the same beliefs or whatever) is stupid! It will always be stupid! Then someone has to say,"Oh but what about this or what about that?" Fuck that! You don't have the intelligence to look beyond something that's different from you!? Then you're an idiot and you will always be an idiot until you learn to think differently! I wish people would stop making excuses for it!

Drunken rants are usually based on true feelings. If I was drunk and ranting about something it would naturally be something that I truly didn't like, not about some nonsense that didn't make sense. That's what tells me that Mel Gibson is probably to some degree a true racist. The reason everyone is codemning him is because racism is FUCKING DANGEROUS! Think about it. We have homosexuals killing themselves over it! If the US hadn't entered WWII when it did, racism may have destroyed Europe and possibly the world. When someone like Mel Gibson says something racist then every racist or borderline racist that looks up to Mel Gibson as a famous person is suddenly even more justified to himself for being racist.

I've been so fucking drunk I couldn't stand more times than I care to remember, but I have never called anyone anything I didn't actually believe them to be simply because I was in the bag. When a non-racist person becomes drunk, they don't automatically start screaming "pack of niggers" or that "Jews are to blame for all the wars in the world". Mental Dominance

    by Hipshot

Racism isn't noticing race. Racism is ascribing different levels of humanity or capacity to people based upon race. And the "killing the black guy first" meme is one of those clues, as is killing ALL the black men, or presenting all of them as subhuman or criminal. Racists (and no, I'm not saying you are) would love for people to pretend not to notice race--it would allow them to spread their hateful ideas with impunity. Gee, it isn't racism that no black dramatic hourlong shows have EVER succeeded on television--it's just a statistical blip! Get over it (and no, a show with a single black star surrounded by white people doesn't count as a "black show"). If 85% of the population is white, that doesn't explain why 99%+ of the successful shows are, unless those white people have a STRONG aversion against seeing too many non-whites (Asians included) in roles of authority. This speaks not to whites being particularly racist, but a human tendency to "prefer their own." And you don't just accept that, "Dominance", you actively squeal if someone even points out how damaging and hurtful it is. You may not be a racist, but you are certainly carrying water for them.

    re Jews in control

    by DocPazuzu

Yes, there are many Jews in all kinds of influential positions in America's entertainment world and elsewhere. As are Christians. Thing is, nobody says "Look at all them Christians in country music! It's a plot! They're CONTROLLING Nashville!" You know why? Because nobody puts two and two together and reaches the conclusion that all Christians are in cahoots with each other. Yet with Jews the implication is that they all know each other and are all "in on it", it being a vague, nebulous plan designed to be behind everything that goes wrong in your life.

  • Oct. 19, 2010, 9:51 a.m. CST

    "killing the black guy first"

    by DocPazuzu

Can anyone actually name a relatively modern American film where that happens?

  • Oct. 19, 2010, 10:04 a.m. CST

    by Hipshot

It doesn't happen much anymore--partially because so many black people raised hell about it. Things do change. ## But Jews ARE disproportionately represented in Hollywood. Nothing wrong with that--they worked damned hard for it. But my second film agent, who was Jewish, used to laugh about it all the time. This was "Their" town, and no bones about it.

  • Oct. 19, 2010, 10:06 a.m. CST

    by DocPazuzu

My point is that overrepresentation doesn't automatically mean they're out to get anyone or meeting in secret cabals plotting the overthrow of the world while drinking the blood of Christian babies.

  • Oct. 19, 2010, 10:08 a.m. CST

    as for "the black guy"...

    by DocPazuzu

...dying first, I don't think it's been noticable for the past 30 or 40 years. That the black guy always (or most of the time) dies in those films is another matter, which might be equally telling.

  • Oct. 19, 2010, 10:08 a.m. CST

    Oh, and DocPazuzu

    by Hipshot

The more objectionable trope racially was actually having the ONLY black man (or lead black man) in a movie die--to protect a white person. I have never, ever, seen a film where the opposite happens. Not once. Can anyone name one? Considering that death order in monster movies usually goes from the most objectionable to the most precious (sexually active dope-smoking sluts first, virgins last) the implications of unconscious valuation are pretty clear. And it sucks to be on the wrong end of that equation.

    Black person dying first

    by lecter1914

As a black man I've never understood where this came from. I'm pretty big into horror films and I can only recall this occurring in NIghtmare on Elm St. 4(but to be fair Kinkaid survived the third), Jurassic Park, Scream 2(but that was more of mocking said stereotype) and if you want to be nitpicky..The Shining. I'm sure there's probably more out there but I dont think it deserves to be such a "well known fact" that the black person always dies first in horror films.

"Gee, it isn't racism that no black dramatic hourlong shows have EVER succeeded on television--it's just a statistical blip!"<P> Actually, dude, it may well be just that. But first - what do you define as success?? Because for me, I think THE COSBYS was pretty damn successful for its lengthy run, as was BENSON, THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR (did very well for the career of one Will AW HEEEEELL NAW Smith), EVERYONE HATES CHRIS, THE DAVE CHAPPELLE SHOW, ROOTS (admittedly just a mini-series, but still very popular), THE WAYANS BROTHERS SHOW, and here in the UK, DESMONDS (a FANTASTIC show)... What IS interesting in these series is that they often had a token white character in the same way most white shows have token black characters. Though nobody yet has had the balls to actually call them Token, outside of SOUTH PARK, which is of course the pinnacle of awesomeness.<P> But I digress. If I were offering DIFF'RENT STROKES as an example of a successful black show, then yeah - you win. But I'm not. Black shows are THRIVING these days. As it is, I definitely take this round :D <P> So, Hipshot - get those gloves off, and come let's have some FUN!!

Granted the FREDDY movies were very whitebread, but in FREDDY VS JASON, the black girl definitely dies right near the end of the movie. And as she was easily the most annoying character in the movie, she should've got it first... ;D<P> Good point, though. I'm racking my brains to think of a horror wehere the black guy dies first, or even early on. In JASON X, two black guys die heroic deaths - doesn't the guy who takes Jason out at the end happen to be black?? Can't remember, it's been a while...<P> Bet Hipshot hates CANDYMAN though - the ultimate tale of white fear of black power... >;P

I see youre civil so we can have this discussion. Yeah, the black person dying first has always made me scratch my head since I dont think it's as common as people make it out to be..even before it became was never a cliche. now, as far as blacks on television, I'm going to have to disagree with you. I won't call it racism but I still maintain there is a disconnect when theres a predominantly african american drama on television. I notice all of the shows you mentioned to Hip Shot were comedies. Why not the dramas like Soul Food, The Game, etc..I would name Under Covers but um, it sucks so I wont stoop that low.

  • for a long time, were the Indians since they were depicted as the bad guys. Then from the racial bad guy we went to a new kind of villainy in the form of politically bad nations. At first we got the Russians.Somewhere there the Cubans had a brief appearance. Then the Vietnamese and later the some point they used the Serbians. Now it seems the new baddies are the Chinese.Probably in the future the new bad guy will be Africa or South America.<br /> <p>that's how Hollywood's propaganda machine always worked.

Thanks for the reality check - they ARE all comedies, which I never thought to notice. You could take this as the fact that black-only shows are only palatable to white audiences if they are funny, therefore non-threatening - though more black leads are carrying shows these days, so I'd say that's untrue - see Idris Elba in LUTHER for example. Dunno if it's me NOT being typical of white viewers, but I don't have a problem watching a purely black show as long as it's entertaining to me - DESMOND'S is the almost-comppletely black show I can remember being really hooked on in the UK, and though it is a comedy, it's resolutely NOT about the differences between being black and being white - which tends to be the only thing in black media that makes me roll my eyes. I can watch Tucker, Rock, Lawrence, Chappelle etc all day long, but the minute the conversation turns to "you know what I saw a white person do the other day?", my eyes glaze over. It's lazy, hackneyed observational coasting, and black comedy would benefit more from not bringing up disparities between races that can only encourage further distancing beween them. Martin Lawrence seems to be the worst for this - Chappelle is the only one who can still make it funny, though...

    Me and Spud

    by Hipshot

Spud seems to be an adult. Which means that we can disagree, and even use some harsh language, but I sense him to be a good man, and I have not the slightest thing against him. And yeah, I love to argue. ## I don't say the "black guy dying first" thing is "racist" because "racist" generally is taken to mean "I hate the other group." The actual thing I see happening is a sense that blacks (in film) are slightly disposable. So you get a huge number of movies where there is just one black man, and he dies before the end of the film. Before you say that I'm being too sensitive, name me a couple of movies where there is just one white guy in the whole film, and he dies. I have lost count of the number of times I've seen this, and until you've seen it at least two or three times, you can't begin to tell me how it feels. But it isn't "racism"--it is tribalism, the "we are just a little more valuable than you are" attitude ALL groups of human beings have (although some individuals rise above it). At no time, and in no way, have I ever suggested that white people are more racist--and I get into arguments with black people about this, 'cause they're just as racist as ya'll, they just don't have the numbers for it to matter a damn.

Yeah, he's a talented guy. I grew up watching his movies too. But like Michael Richards, he crossed a line where he revealed some serious ugliness in his heart. I know plenty of down-to-earth, blue collar white people who would ream someone a new asshole in a heartbeat but would NEVER say what Gibson said. Now put that in context with some his the other questionable incidents/actions. It paints a pretty bad picture.
