Two bits on SW:TPM DVD.-updated.

Published at:  Nov 15, 1999 12:33:02 PM CST

What a great day. For those of you who absolutely, positively MUST know about the Phantom Menace on DVD...because your lives revolve around this stuff, here's some contradictory information for you to ponder.

"Sorry, I would have posted this if feed back but it wouldn't let me. I
just got back from Las Vegas and TPM was available for Pay Per View in all
of the hotels (My friends and I ordered it a few drunken early mornings.)
If this isn't a major indicator that the home release machine is in motion,
I don't know what is. Thanks!"

Okay, that kind of makes sense. Sort of ...but it doesn't really necessitate a home video release. Fine. So here's the other bit of fun on the subject:

"From varied sources I have heard it is Lucas' intention to hold off an the SW
DVD's until the new trilogy is complete. He compares the production of a
quality DVD akin to producing another movie. The transfer of the movie to
DVD isn't all he is looking to do. He wants to pack each DVD with histories
and explanations of his conception of SW, why and how each film was shot,
his inspirations, the ties to classic mythologies, the use of technology,
interactive additions, etc. With all he wants to do, Lucas feels he just
does not have the time to produce a quality DVD until he completes 2 & 3.
He does promise it will be worth the wait."

Well, that makes partial sense...I mean Lucas certainly has a lot of explaining to do, so it will probably take a while to come up with an excuse for TPM...seriously, though, I can understand wanting to do a really bang-up job on Episodes IV, V, and VI, which are actually worth owning, and that sort of thing would take a good amount of time. Personally, I'd bet on this taking a really long time to complete. If it were up to me though, I'd FORCE Lucas to do the special edition DVDs of IV, V, and VI BEFORE doing Episode II, so he'd REMEMBER WHAT STAR WARS IS ABOUT IN THE FIRST PLACE BEFORE HE MADE ANOTHER FIASCO OF A MOVIE. Or maybe, he's taking all of this time so that he can make a "special edition" of Episode I that doesn't suck! Just a thought.

Hasta Los Midichlorians?!? HEY! IT'S THE FORCE! IT'S MAGIC! THAT'S ALL WE NEEDED TO KNOW!,

update: Hey, LET'S ADD TO THE FUD, EH? A third reader chimes in:

Hey guys!

Thought I'd drop you a line about some exciting news. I work for a major
video retail chain, and today we were told that, while we may be starting to
hear rumors and rumblings as to the video release of Star Wars: Episode One,
Fox has set an official announce date of February 7. This is the day they
put out all the official press releases, and the day we'll be allowed to
begin taking orders. While we were given no release info (the "unofficial"
word should be out by late Dec/early Jan), a February announce date would
suggest they're sticking with the original plan of a May release.

One thing they DID tell us was that there may be a possibility that the
Widescreen edition (is there any other kind?) might be available ONLY in the
gift set. (Note this is not a gift set of the 4 existing films, but rather a
gift set for just Ep1, like a "making of" video, possibly a book, etc...).
So, now the countdown begins...

Keep the rumors coming, you bastards!

The only way this film will even scratch the surface of the cinema release is if it is on DVD. It needs to happen SOON.

    I already rented it

It's already out on Betamax. Apparently TPM isn't even good enough to come out on VHS. The rental store said it was ok if I didn't return the tape at all. I guess they're starting a promotion next week to give them away with every Pokemon toy or box of Milk Duds they sell. I saw them ripping the tape out of the extra copies they had, just to decorate their store Christmas tree. Boy, that Lucas better include 6 hours of apologies on that DVD...if it ever comes out! Seriously, though, I hear George signed a deal to boost ticket sales of Episode II by replacing Anakin with Pokemon. And Palpatine will be replaced with that Taco Bell dog, who constantly hounds Anakin...er, Pokemon, to drop the chalupa. That's all for now. Bill Clinton

    DVD((((o)))(::::::::::::::::::::::::::>

I just realized why GL wants to wait 5-6 yrs. to do this. When HDTV becomes the standard in a few
years, DVD will be replaced by HD-DVD to accomodate the higher quality resolution. The Madman of Marin County is always a step ahead of us. I just hope I can afford DVD by then. MTFBWY'all
