Remember that TRON: LEGACY IMAX event you've heard so much about? Tickets are available now for the October 28 screenings!!!
Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.
So the 10-week countdown to the release of TRON: LEGACY kicked off on 10-10-10, and today, starting right now, you can get free tickets to a special event on October 28 that will give audiences across the globe the first chance to see 20 minutes of 3-D IMAX footage from the film. If memory serves, AVATAR did something similar last year, and the response and reaction was pretty strong. How do you get tickets? Just go to http://www.TRONNight2010.com. What are you waiting for?
TRON: LEGACY opens December 17. I've got the cinematic equivalent of blue balls waiting to see this.

Louisville gets fucked again. Are we a city or not?
by The Reluctant Austinite
The only theater in Kentucky showing the footage is in New Port, which is not only an hour and a half away, but is within spitting distance of Cincinnati and might as well be in Ohio. This fucking city is the largest city in the tri-state area and it needs somebody to get off their ass in the local government/tourism departement and put us back on the fucking map! Just a few years ago we had studio executives visiting the local Tinsletown movie theater trying to figure out why they were selling tickets in record breaking numbers, and yet we have no critic screenings and no major film critic because of that.

Let it be known that a new attraction is now open at Disney California Adventure called ElecTRONica. It's a nighttime dance party and TRON promotional thing. They have Flynn's Arcade, complete with Flynn's Arcade game tokens and about forty '80s era classic arcade games. They even made a coin-op stand-up Space Paranoids game, just like Flynn played in the first movie. Also, a 3D preview of the TRON: Legacy movie. The preview is about 12-15 minutes long, so it might be different footage than what will be shown in theaters across the country. Overall it's pretty cool. I geeked out a bit. =) There's something very nostalgic about seeing the sign for Flynn's arcade in those big red neon letters.
-
why are these things always in bumblefuck? I'm not thrilled at the thought of going to Kennesaw, Georgia. I went to the Avatar preview and it was only half full because it was in Whocaresville, USA. Seems like they'd be better served by going a little more metro. Even if it is in smaller market cities. Just sayin.
-
20 minutes for free? Yeah I'll check it out.
-
from that online game thing last year.

and he says his suit will be Kryptonian nanites this time similar to green lantern's digital suit. He says it changes all the time to different looks depending on whatever super deeds must be done.
-
it was AWESOME. They had about 10 minutes of footage in the Muppet theater, with synchronized lights and wind in the theater matching the film. Man if the whole movie was like that it would be amazing.
Flynn's was a blast to hang out in, I bought $10 worth of Flynn's tokens just to take back to my friends in Seattle.
-
bummer.
-
I wasn't going to bother, but went to the site about an hour ago and they were still available, so I snagged one for Indianapolis. I hope they have free shirts there.
-
Just got my ticket for Indianapolis. i was surprised they are even showing it here. Nothing good ever comes here. It where fun and cool shot comes to die
-
We NEVER get cool shit like this! Managed to snag a ticket and I can't wait! GREETINGS PROGRAM!
-
this will generate some BO dollars. 20 minute preview on a Thursday night? I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking, "Well, if I'm going to be at the theatre that night for a 20 minute preview, we may as well see a full movie, too"
-
Very excited!!!! The only film I have any desire to see for the rest of the year.
-
What, our brand new state of the art IMAX theater isn't good enough for you Disney? F you too assholes.
-
marketing to the converted? You have to figure the free tickets are almost all going to people who would see this anyway, at some point you may actually discourage a certain percentage of them no matter what you show. From there, you are leaving the word-of-mouth marketing to the geeks that were left to market things like Grindhouse and Scott Pilgrim. I guess buying positive reviews on geek sites is still considered a viable marketing option, but you have to figure if Tron leaves Disney in the loss column, this strategy will be re-evaluated.
-
I am dragging my girlfriend to the preview night. She could give a shit about Tron and most geek flicks. If this preview kicks ass, she'll dig it and tell her pals. It's good marketing. They're pulling out all the stops to ensure this franchise finally gets off the ground and is no longer simply a 'cult' flick.

gotta luv living on same block as imax Lincoln square. I wonder how friggin early i'll have to leave work.

did avatar screenign have spoilers? I kind of hope this doesn't
by OandA
I don't like being spoiled for movies. especially one like this one...

The reason it makes sense to do this is that there are probably a few people who may not be as excited to see it as others who if after seeing the free screening are blown away by it will be more inclined to mention it to family, co-workers etc... I've been pumped to see it for awhile now but a lot of people my wife works with don't even know anything about it. It all depends on what your interests are. Avatar had the benefit of being a film directed by James Cameron (a household name). Disney trying out a similar strategy makes even more sense imo because Tron has a director who no one is familiar with and its based on a film property that wasn't that a big of a hit in the 1980's. It's apples and oranges. If TL winds up being as good or better than the trailers then this 20 minute sneak peek will probably do more to help the film word of the mouth wise than Avatar which makes worth doing and not a waste of money. Grindhouse had problems because the first half of the film was directed by Rodriguez (who is nowhere near as good a filmmaker as Tarantino). Quentin Tarantino is in a class by himself next Christopher Nolan. The film was too long for most audiences who had to sit through the terrible Planet Terror to get to the great trailers and QT's entertaining Death Proof. Didn't see Scott Pilgrim and while I like Edgar Wright's previous films Michael Cera being in it turned me off from seeing it (and I can't imagine I am the only one who felt that way.) I will bet you that if Wright had made a similar film to Pilgrim (big budget and all) but with Simon Pegg as the lead I bet it would have done a whole lot better at the box office actually. Cera simply isn't a box office draw and I refuse to see any film he is in post-Superbad (an insanely overrated piece of crap).
-
If Edgar Wright or even Eli Roth for that matter had been able to direct the film that would have gone in the place of Planet Terror Grindhouse would have been a hit. Tarantino delivered. Wright, Zombie and Roth did too. It was Rodriguez who dropped the ball.
-
I almost completely forgot about this. Just got my ticket a few minutes ago.
-
That will pretty much spoil the whole film! I'll just wait a few weeks and see the whole thing. Besides it will look better digitally projected.
-
Saw the email last night, didn't act on it. Saw the story this afternoon on AintItCool, said what the hell, clicked on the link. Hey, look, they're doing it at my favorite Regal Cinema in the outskirts of Buffalo NY, and tickets are still available. Clicked, filled in, printed, and went back in to see that theater's now "sold out". Karma, man, sometimes I just don't deserve it.
-
It's good seeing him going back to zombies.
http://tinyurl.com/2bzolaj

1) I don't expect this to be 20 minutes of footage from the film itself. I expect at least half of that time to be talking heads: the director, stars and effects guys talking about the movie, the process of getting it made and why it's groundbreaking. The footage will likely be clips interspersed in between with maybe a new trailer. 2) To be honest, I'm already sold and don't really want to see too much more footage or I'll feel I've seen the whole thing before December.
-
The reason that some IMAX theatres can't show things like this or the Avatar preview are because these are only available to IMAX Digital locations. Locations like the Colorado Center IMAX or the DMNS IMAX here in Denver can't run it because they are a film only location and don't have the capability to receive the feed for this. Other reasons can involve there being IMAX press screenings already scheduled that night, other contractual obligations, etc. *OR*...they could just not like your town. ;-)

Just listened to Daft Punk's "The Game Has Changed" on the Tron FB page. Sounds pretty damned great! What do you guys think?
-
TR2N or whatever the fuck it's called. I'll probably see it in a quarter full theatre opening day.
-
I'll be at AMC Livonia.
-
Though I'll see the actual movie at Henry Ford Museum.
-
looking forward to it. maybe they'll show the whole movie, huh?
-
This'll run from 7-7:30 then I plan on seeing the Rifftrax live simulcast where they do the Vincent Price version of House on Haunted Hill(happening the same night at 8PM). EPIC night at the movies right there........
-
What time's the event start in Buffalo? Missed getting a ticket going to try waiting in standby line!
-
This is Disney's chance to sell me on it. As someone who was blown away as a kid by TRON in 1982 and who continues to love the original for its visuals and earnestness, the sequel looks to be rather slick but lifeless. This will decide whether or not I spend too much to see it in the theaters or wait until it comes out on home video, where I can get it free from the library.

Birmingham, UK. 28th October. Will be wearing my ENCOM ID and Flynns Arcade t-shirt. Boo-Yah!
