Rhys Ifans to square off against Andrew Garfield's SPIDER-MAN!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Sony issued a press release today announcing a bit of casting for their Spider-Man reboot. Namely one Mr. Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill) will be the villain.

They won't say which villain, so now the guessing game starts! I'm hoping they don't rehash Spidey 1 and have him playing Norman Osborn. I think they're smart enough to let that lie, but since they're involving Gwen Stacey, we have to expect to see the Green Goblin at some point in these new films. But if they're putting Peter Parker back in High School, I hope that opens up Curt Connors again as a possibility. Maybe that's just me wanting to see The Lizard finally realized on the screen. Keeping mum on the whole deal, director Mark Webb did state that it was after seeing Ifans' turn in the upcoming film ANONYMOUS that the decision was made to cast him as the lead villain. It was Ifans' ability to "embody both warmth and rage" that made him "an ideal choice for this character." Sounds like the Jekyll & Hyde personality of Curt Connors, no? What do you folks think? -Quint Follow Me On Twitter

Seems logical. By the way, I remember him playing (to good effect) a psychopathic gangster squaring off against Johnny Lee Miller in a film called LOVE, HONOR AND OBEY that was pretty good (also has Jude Law and Ray Winstone).

    Sony execs hate the Lizard...

    by Chewtoy

That's why they went with the Vulture for Spidey 4 before it all fell apart. They shot down any story with the Lizard as the villain because they wanted someone with a human face.

I thought Sony didn't want the Lizard

    by BarryConvex

It'd be a huge slap in the face to Raimi and Dylan Baker, if they used the Lizard as the villain, since Sony wanted a villain with a "face". That being said, I still would love to see the character finally used. I figure the villain will end up being Electro, due to the fact that he involves little set up and the effects will be cheaper to do than the Lizard's.

I had heard Venom mentioned a few times...

    by rabidfnark

This doesn't exactly disprove that theory, but I, for one, hope it turns out to be someone else (Villain-wise (Venom would make for a bad 'first' movie villain, I think)). The Lizard would be cool, but I would have liked that better with Dylan Baker as Conners and Raimi directing. Not doubting the reboot, just saying that was a lot of character work to flush away, but let's be honest, that was a pipe dream.

With the rumors of Philip Seymour Hoffman as Venom

    by Kammich

It makes you contemplate how awesome Rhys Ifans could be as Cletus Kasady/Carnage. Ifans has always done a good job of conveying that subtle menace, the type of psycho that functions normally but gives the idea that he'll snap at any time. He reminds me of a bit of a poor man's Tim Roth, actually. Either way, I hope they don't go with Venom and/or Carnage... if this is some sort of a "reboot," then that is far too tough of a story to try to start a franchise with. Honestly, I have no fucking clue what the plot of this movie will be... the shroud of mystery has me pretty excited, though.

    I think he's playing Venom

    by SupermanIsMyGod

Venom is recognizable, he'll sell action figures,'d be a smart idea, I think, to throw Norman Osborn in for a scene or two to introduce him. Go Dark Knight on it and have him be the main villain in part 2 when he kills Gwen. I'd love to see that whole story unfold on screen.

    by Shermdawg

If they're doing Ultimate Spidey, or an amalgamation of the two continuities, I doubt they'll re-do the Venom of the 616, meaning Brock is a scientist who creates the symbiote, and Cletus as far as I know wasn't even around. From what I heard Carnage had no host, and could shape shift/absorb the memories of it's victims.

Remember when Charlie Sheen was Spidey?

    by bishopfan85

I remember in the 90's when efforts were heavily being made to release a Spidey pic that was muddled in legal tape that took over a decade to finally untangle. There was talk of Charlie Sheen playing the web head and even a projected release date for the film that was highly anticipated but obviously never surfaced. James Cameron was slated to direct and at a time when comic book movies were not yet guaranteed blockbusters there was a high anticipation level for everyone who knew about what was going on. With all that being said, and living in a time where now the internet and websites like this can keep us in the know much more in-depth than anyone from my generation could have ever imagined, this movie is probably the least exciting for a major franchise comic book character than anything that I can think of. Here's hoping that the end result makes up for it all.

    by chainsaw_shawn

it's pretty damn hard to top any of the previous versions of the villans being that Willam dafoes ace performance is still fresh in people's minds. the green goblin doesnt need a reboot. If anything let's see mysterio, lizard, rhino and or vulture. A new cadre of villans is neccessary before even trying to rehash to whole green goblin because the first two spiderman movies was epic!!! are you kidding me?

  • Oct. 11, 2010, 9:26 p.m. CST

Green Goblin most certainly DOES need a reboot.

a new villain is a TERRIBLE idea

    by Kammich

Sony has already shit on the fanbase with Spider-man 3, and they're shitting on the fanbase even more by rebooting the franchise 3 years later... do you really think they have the balls to reboot Spider-man with an (unfortunately) unknown Andrew Garfield battling a relatively unknown Rhys Ifans playing a newly created villain? no way. NO fucking way.

  • Oct. 11, 2010, 9:32 p.m. CST

    New spidey =BS

    by Sloppy2nds

If they follow Ultimate Spidey story line then Carnage kills Gwen. Carnage doesnt need a host so no idea who Rhys is going to play. He could pass for Electro. Vulture is old so thats a big no.

  • Oct. 11, 2010, 9:46 p.m. CST

    Electro definitely comes to mind

    by BlackBauer0320

Physique-wise, that's what would make sense. I don't think we can read too much into the "exhibiting warmth and rage" statement because I think all villains would need the ability to demonstrate both sides there, in order to be a good character and not one-dimensional. Vulture is old but I could see them deciding to go younger there, for the sake of believability, though much to the dismay of the fans. On a side note, just saw The Social Network finally and I thought Garfield was quite excellent. Reminded me a TON of Hayden Christenson. Except, you know, for the good acting. Lots of similar mannerisms though, and the tone of voice is eerily identical.

    by TheSeeker7

okay so upon having the realization recently that if I'd ever actually seen all of Superman 1 & 2 in their entirety in one sitting that it's not been since childhood (and I'm 34yo), last week I watched both (I watched the Donner cut of #2). and hooollllly shit, were these bad. How in the holy fuck did these movies ever come to be known as all time classics? Yea okay there's some great sequences within both, but the films as a whole? and they BOTH end with the same gimmick, Supes reversing the Earth to turn back time? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME???<br> <br> These were incredibly mediocre films at best (& obviously 3 & 4 don't even belong in the conversation). well and so just to be thorough, I took in another fresh viewing of Superman Returns after those two, and frankly, I think Returns might be the best film in the Superman franchise. Which isn't saying much, granted, but there ya go. But shit, the original Supes 1 & 2 have a friggin laundry list of faults.

    Electro seems obvious

    by andrew coleman

This is a reboot if they toss Venom in(again) or Carnage they will loose people. Nerds ruined Spider-man 3 by bitching about Venom to the point that Sony pushed Raimi to use him. I think what the reboot should do is set up Norman Osborn as a future Green Goblin villian. Electro works for a reboot. He is menacing(blows shit up) but pretty simple story wise. For a reboot where they want to ease audiences into the idea of a new Spider-man and new Gwenn Stacey etc. They need a basic villain without a lot of set up. So Electro works for me. Set up the second film to have Lizard and Kraven the third to have Norman becoming Goblin and killing Gwenn... They should just hire me to make these movies.

  • Oct. 11, 2010, 11:44 p.m. CST

    Brand New Day

    by vadakinX

They should bring Tobey MacGuire in at the beginning of the film, pre-credits, to make a deal with the devil to erase his years as Spider-Man. Then flash back through all three movies and stop on Garfield staring at his locker as Flash Thomson's fist comes flying at him. Only this time Peter doesn't dodge it. This time he gets his square in the jaw. <p> He doesn't retaliate with fancy Spider movies, he just gets the crap beaten out of him. Harry Osborn looks on, pointing and laughing as Mephisto whispers in his ear that he took away his powers too but Peter has forgotten everything so he has no idea and dies a week later from the venomous bite from the spider. <p> Stan Lee cameo's as the mortician and Aunt May and a still living Uncle Ben watch him get buried. 5 years later, Peter wakes up at Disney where Kevin Feige informs him that everyone hates him now so Sony had no problems giving the rights back so he can be in Avengers 3 alongside RDJ as Iron Man and Matt Damon as Bruce Banner because in 5 years Marvel will have recast the Hulk another 17 times. <p> This post made no sense.

I thought it was the other way round , It was Raimi who didint want to use the Lizard becuasue you couldnt use and actor and he wanted to see the actors face to convey emotions. It was he who wnated Vulture and Sony how then nixed that. As for Evans, I think Electro is the safest bet. He's reasonalbly well known, and we havent seen him yet. They may have Osborn, but I dont hink he'll be Gobby yet , at least until the end of the film. Or it wont be different enough formt he first movie

    You're delusional Tall_Boy

    by tailhook

Do you need A-listers? Preferably for the villain... but honestly.. not really. But you do need stars. And Andrew Garfield may be some big star in BFE, but he's largely done jack and shit here in the States. Social Network will give him some visibility but by and large he's an unknown quantity as a lead. People don't look at the billing and go OMG ANDREW GARFIELD I GOTTA SEE THIS FILM NOW. Its even worse when your villain IS an unknown.<p> As per both Will Smith and Tom Cruise... they're doing quite fine. Even a misfire and 'bomb' from Cruise puts out $229 million at the box office. Why? Because he's Tom Cruise and the name sells worldwide. Even 'dry' material for Will Smith like 7 pounds puts out $168 million at the box office.<p> And what happens when you get two relatively unknown kids making a horror film... o right... you get Let Me In... which will be lucky to even break $10 million even though the quality of the film was excellent. Stars still matter... a lot.

    My dream trilogy

    by 300 monkeys

Who's the villain in ASM #1? Why, it's the Chameleon! who could definitely work on film and could be played by some thespian like this guy, but secretly be masterminded by [insert big star here] as Mysterio! This could also work with multiple villains, as Spidey barely glimpses M! in the first film but M! then sends little Petey on a holy hellacious mindfuck in film #2, partly in revenge for messing up his plans in film #1 and partly because that will be lots of fun to watch. Set up the Osbornes as Peter's (slightly imperiously crazy) second family, punch up Norman's role as mentor and surrogate dad, and have the Goblin-Gwen Stacy crazytrain hit Petey out of left field for film #3. You could easily build that shit to truly operatic heights over the course of three films, Harry's drug problems and love/resentment of Pete, Gwen being threatened by, and then becoming pals with, MJ, and all. Or not. I'm guessing not.

As mentioned before, they'll want to cash in on the buzz for vampires. They'll have the whole sympathetic backstory about Morbius originaly being a biochemist searching for a cure for his blood disease, which will be the "warmth and rage" thing. I can see Ifans as a vampire.

Ultimate Brock was a scientist in a collegiate sense. However, it was Brock and Peter's dads who invented the symbiote in hopes of finding a way for the body to heal itself using the material. Regardless, I'm interested if they use a villian from the books, or one they make up. Just make it interesting!

    The Donner Superman films suck?!?

    by The_Warrior_Poet

First off, Donner gets a pass because he was the first to helm a blockbuster comic book movie. But, he doesn't need to use his pass. Here's why: -The first time out for a comic book film and they absolutely nailed the music. Danny Elfman would do it again for Batman in 89. What other comic book heroes can you list who have iconic themes, where most people who aren't fanboys can listen to a 5 second clip of the soundtrack and instantly know what movie it's from? -I know this is highly subjective, but I'm sure others will agree: Superman I & II had a certain cinematic "magic" to them. You weren't watching a normal film; you were watching a mythical story unfold. The handling of a super heroe's secret identity, the relationship between hero and love interest (i.e. romance), the feats of heroism that were breathtaking for the relative level of special effects... it all added up to an exhilarating cinematic experience. Have you forgotten the pre-CGI revolution? Look at any action film circa 1995 and see how practical effects ruled the day and were often times lackluster. Most of all, Superman The Movie and Superman II were simply FUN. Within the context of the film the audience could easily suspend their disbelief when Superman turned back the rotation of the planet & hence time. I read somewhere that there was a "romantic logic" to the moment where Superman holds Lois' broken body, clenches a fist, and calls upon all his Godly power to reverse fate itself. It didn't matter that making the planet rotate in a different direction wouldn't turn back time. In that particular universe, it worked. Now, with Superman Returns, you've got a scene where Superman is stabbed with a kryptonite shiv after landing on a chunk of kryptonite-infused landmass and it saps all his power, nearly killing him. Yet moments later, when the shiv is removed (although not entirely, as we later see shards of the material removed by doctors) Superman regains his abilities and breaks cloud cover to bask in the rays of the yellow sun. All of this somehow makes him 1000x more powerful than he was earlier in the film when he struggled to halt a crashing jumbo jet (a time when he had more exposure to sun and absolutely zero kryptonite in his system). So Superman somehow, after getting his ass kicked by Lex & goons, with kryptonite chunks still between his ribs, manages to lift a rock the size of an ENTIRE CONTINENT into SPACE. The energy expenditure makes him pass out in a crucifixion pose and plummet back to Earth. Space, mind you, would give you yellow sun rays undiluted by the atmosphere... I could go on, but can you see how SR betrayed its own logic but Superman I & II did not.

I'm the biggest Spidey fan in the world...

    by Blanket-Man

...I won't bore you with my credentials - just take my word for it. And the sad fact is, my enthusiasm for this project barely registers right now. Sony wants a newer, hipper, younger Spidey, and the first thing they do is cast a Peter Parker who's going to be older than Maguire was during Spidey 1 by the time they start shooting. Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans... as Jerry Seinfeld once said: Who are these people? I'll be there on opening day, I'm sure, but right now I doubt I'll return 5-7 times like I did for Raimi's movies... Hopefully Webb proves me wrong.

    THEWARRIORPOET.....uh, actually Superm

    by southafricanguy

an the movie does indeed betray its own logic, how is it that Superman is nt fast enough to stop both missiles that Lex has launched, but then later he is fast enough to actually make the Earht spin back on its axis? Or how about why a "criminal mastermind" such as Lex Luthor surrounds himself with incompotent retards (Otis)? Clever people have clever people work for them, only idiots would have other idiots work for them. And thats just two that I can think of. Im no hater dude, I enjoy Superman 1 and 2 (though I do think they are overrated), and certainly Reeves performance as Superman is beyond reproach. But lets also be honest here, they have aged somewhat badly at a technical level, and for everything they get right, there are plenty of things wrong like the camp, powers that Superman never had before but suddenly pulls out of his ass (the white beams out of the Kryptonians fingers), and huge deus Ex machinas like the magic kiss, and of course the spinning the Earth backwards....

Dark_Equalizer: Re Sony, the Lizard and the Vulture

    by Chewtoy

Raimi was the one who kept putting Dr. Connors into the films. Movieline reported that it was Sony execs that kept shooting down the idea of using the Lizard as a villain because he was too inhuman and they wanted a villain with a face.<br><br>Sony was behind the Vulture and had announced that they had cast John Malkovich as the character with Anne Hathaway as his daughter before Raimi came back to them and said that he couldn't make the story work in the timeframe in which they wanted him to turn out the next sequel, so he and Sony split on the project.<br><br>Supposedly, this current film is based on a pitch for 2 Spider-man films that Sony liked but Raimi didn't. Originally, Sony had stuck the pitches in a drawer as possibilities for Spider-man 5 & 6 if Raimi should leave after 4. When he left early, they dusted them off and went ahead with a full reboot based on the core idea of those pitches... whatever they may be.

    by mynamesdan

Yeah, my logic is a little inconsistent, but Osborne got to appear in three movies already- we've seen his genesis, seen him turn from good to bad, watched his personality divide exquisitely, seen him die, seen his son attempt to avenge him and assume his role. Norman's all played out and Ifans, as brilliant as he is (and he really is streets ahead of most actors) just can't add anything to the role. Dafoe has played that one all the way through. <p> Venom, mind you, was simply not given the script that his budget deserved.

So Willem Dafoe was a huge star? Maguire? Dunst?

    by Tall_Boy66

The biggest thing you had to a "star" in Spider-Man 1 was William Dafoe. Did he REALLY turn out to be this deciding factor? With the "kids"? "Holy shit, IT'S WILLIAM DAFOE!!! LET'S LINE THE FUCK UP NOW!" Right. Sure. Hell, look at Spider-Man 2. Alfred Molina? Who in the fuck knew who Alfred Molina was aside from a few people who spotted him as the "Throw me the idol!" guy from Raiders? Complete unknown. <P> Dunst and Maguire was relative unknowns and fucking James Franco? COMPLETE unknown. That movie turned them into stars. <P>Thinking you need stars to anchor a brand name as big as Spider-Man is fucking delusional. Fact. Nobody sees these movies for stars. Period. They see them for Spider-Man. <P>Run along and play now.

    a reboot already?

    by LiquidHotMagma

It's only been 3 years since spidey 3 and 8 years since the original, c'mon man what's the point? Also I like Rhys Ifans but with his goofy acting style he could end up as a Schumacher-esque villain. Sorry to be a negative nancy.

A writer at the LA Times is betting on Kraven...

    by HarryKnowlesNonExistentInceptionReview

...but the gun-toting, Australian version from Ultimate Spider-Man. Sony wants to get as far away as possible from Raimi's "weirdo-science" based villains. Also, a villain who hunts the hero with a gun is a lot cheaper, effects wise than having to CGI up a humanoid lizard or someone bonded to a constantly morphing space symbiote. They won't even have to spend the relatively low effects costs that Electro would require. Sony's really aiming to tie this into the gay-ass-looking Broadway show and to try and turn the Spidey franchise into a relatively low-cost, quick-to-make product similar to the Twilight movies. Of course it's going to blow big time, but there's no arguing with the suits once they've fixated on a lame idea.

So "it's even worse when you villain is unknown"

    by Tall_Boy66

That was a terrible drag upon Spider-Man 2, a movie that is frequently cited as easily the best of the Spider-Man movies and often as one of the best superhero movies of all time. <P>Casting an unknown as the villain sure fucked that movie up, boyhowdy!!!

    by The Reluctant Austinite

I see you guys have been following the "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" news. Oboy. Green Goblin looks like a Sid & Marty Krofft version of a Cirque du Soliel charcter, and of cource with the lack of good villians to choose from (insert snark) they had to create a charcter that supposedly is a giant female swiss army knife that looks like a silver Grace Jones. I almost can't wait for that train wreck.

    the first two Supermans

    by TheSeeker7

Okay first of all the person who replied back to me saying that the first Superman is the best and most entertaining comic book film of all time. Wow. I'm really not even sure how to respond to that. Except, I think I feel sorry for you, that you're that easily impressed. Or, at least, I'll say this -- I can see BACK THEN the films having a massive cultural impact, yes, but they have not aged well at all. To STILL call it the best comic book movie ever, dear god. I'm not even sure it's in the top 10. Now the score, well yes of course, it's unbelievably iconic, one of the best all time, but I did also concede both films had certain sequences that were good. I said BOTH FILMS AS A WHOLE were ultimately not to be now revered as classics.<br> <br> And yes, I watched the Donner cut of #2, but I'm aware of the original as well. I believe at the end Clarke while in the office puts some mega-magic kiss on Lois to basically make her forget having discovered that he's really Superman? That's not too far off on the ridiculous and lame meter than turning back time again.<br> <br> And for the record, I believe Michael Bay is a hack to an epic level just like every other fanboy on here, so it's got nothing to do with him.

    Dennis Moore--

    by The Reluctant Austinite

Actually, I hear Webb is being more led in the "Twilight" direction than "Iron Man" or "The Dark Knight". I'm serious. The "Twilight" demographic is huge, even if comic book fans aren't part of it, and Spider-man in his high school days are tailor made for trying to reach that demographic. I think all the people that called for Raimi's head on a plate for "Spider-man 3" are going to wish he was back in the director's chair when the first trailer for this thing hits.

His name gives it away! It's non other than...

    by DrAwkward

Rearranging Mr. Ryhs-Ifan's last name yields new villain's identity:<p> Rhinyss-AF<p> Rhinyss is the conflicted niece of Spiderman's longtime foe,Rhino. <p>AF stands for Absolute Fail, which refers to all things associated with this project.<p>The studio likes hiring people with last names that relate to their role. Marc Webb is weaving the "web" of ultra-thin plot threads that comprises the overall story. Andrew Garfield, or Andrew "Riled Fag" is the angry, whiny punk that doesn't get along with his classmates and takes it out on lower-class New Yorkers who need to steal and rape what they want in life. What a jerk! The studio heads created this character by stealing Sam Raimi's horrible Vultress concept and refashioning it into an exciting antagonist/love interest for Spidey. <p>Rhys-Ifans will of course need all his acting skills to play a teenage girl. He is British, and has probably seen his share of gender-bending Monty Python skits, so that should not be a problem.<p>

Vampires being called the "in" thing means they are already on the way out. No. If you want the shit to go down so that Spidey faces danger and so do the people he cares about, bring on the F-ING LIZARD you panzy-suits at Sony. I dare you.

I think assuming anything is similar to the comics, or using them as a basis for the guessing game, is pointless. Seriously. Having Gwen does not mean we will see the Goblin, and having certain personality traits in the film does not mean it will match anyone with the same traits in the comics. You should understand this game by now.
