Peter Jackson Talks The HOBBIT Movie. No Greenlight Yet - 'You can’t believe everything you read'...

Merrick here...
We've taken a bit of hammering here for not covering the purported/impending "greenlight" of THE HOBBIT more fully, and not alluding to Peter Jackson's supposed direction of that project. As difficult as it may be to believe, there is (sometimes) a method to the madness here at AICN. In the case of THE HOBBIT...and how we've been covering it? Peter Jackson's recent discussion with Empire pretty much sums up where the project is at this time...and illustrates why we're taking a more conservative approach to posting about this picture....for the moment, at least. In short: when something seems reasonably solid to us? We'll put it on the site. In THIS chat with Empire, Jackson explains...
“We’ve seen these reports before, reports saying there was going to be a greenlight in a couple of days — well, a week’s gone by and there isn’t one," adds Jackson. "You can’t believe everything you read. There is only one thing you want to believe and that’s when the studio announces a greenlight. As far as I’m aware that’s not going to be today. I keep hearing positive things. Everyone’s working very hard. There’s a lot of people at Warner Bros. who are working around the clock trying to manoeuvre through the MGM complexities. MGM is a company that is about to go bankrupt and in a way they are about to take The Hobbit into bankruptcy hell with them when they go down. Warners are trying to extract The Hobbit out of the bankruptcy hell before it happens. It is just so complicated I can’t even put my head into it. It’s all to do with American copyright laws, bankruptcy laws. A lot of Warner Bros. lawyers are working round the clock at the moment trying to make it happen so let’s see."
There's much more in Empire's report, so be sure to check it out. In the meantime...just for a bit longer...because of the enormous legal complexities involved in getting the project fully up & running, it's best to take much of what we see and hear about this show with a sizable grain of salt unless such news comes from a studio, or has been confirmed by Jackson in some way, or is inescapably, obviously correct. HOPEFULLY the film will roll in early 2011 - but it sounds like some dominoes still have to just the right way...before that can actually happen. Waiting, with fingers crossed...

  • Oct. 8, 2010, 11:35 a.m. CST

    by XoanonTORN

The NZ/AU unions were in a complete tizzy about having actors work without a bargaining agreement, PJ and his team keep telling them it is illegal under NZ law. The unions keep saying it isn't..sadly they are both right AND wrong..the law is ambiguous at best. Suffice it to say there is a very real possibility of the film going to Sweden, Ireland or Australia...I doubt it will come to Canada (though that would work out perfectly for me). They are still working on it and having dealings. <p> It also came at the exact wrong time for PJ and his team, could be a horrible coincidence or done on purpose..the unions could be under the same impression that the film will start soon. <p> Work is still being done, but nothing is set in it's cast a pall on the whole thing. But hope still lingers. <p> I'll be covering it all on TORN, and perhaps my radio show as well. Cheers.

You are in a sinking ship. That sinking ship is MGM, a studio obviously run down by IDIOTS, I mean, how can a movie studio go bankrupt? Anywhoo, there comes this life boat, and there's place for one. On your right you got 1960s Sean Connery, tears in his eyes, with a martini and a gun. On the left you see Elijah Wood dressed as Frodo, also crying. Sean Connery asks you to hurry up and make up your mind. You can take one to the boat. The whole thing here is: YOU DO NOT FUCKING TAKE THE HOBBIT. You take the KICK ASS SUPER SPY.

    My Kong Viewing experience

    by proevad

Still in my worshiping Peter Jackson phase so i go in the theater. My thoughts during viewing... 1. Movie starts. Jesus, Jack Black is horrible. WTF was he thinking casting him. 2. Usually like Adrian Brody, but again...this isn't working. 3. Omg I'm bored. 4. Cool, we are at the island 5. CGI is below average in the dino chase. 6. When are we leaving the island? 7. Omg my back hurts and I have to pee. 8. Still not over, why the hell did I pay to see a movie about a giant ape? 9. Credits roll. Didn't remember half of what I had just seen. And I still don't. Honestly can't remember most of the damned film. Just remember the feeling of boredom and disappointment. For those who love it, good for you. But, I just have no interest in watching it again. Then I saw the Lovely Bones with lowered expectations, and it was just laughably bad. So, here we are waiting for a movie that's never going to be made, by a director that I don't give a shit about anymore. Death of heroes is sad. Lost Lucas and Jackson in my lifetime. Sometimes the muse is just a mean, nasty bitch who packs her shit and leaves to fuck the pool boy.

"How the hell did people rave about that toon a mere eight years ago?" Maybe focus a little more on the story and the characters and not judge a movie solely on how immersive the FX are. Then maybe the entertainment you take in won't just go in and out of you like a Big-Mac.

    About that "completely plastic Gollum"

    by mortsleam

Before TTT came out, Cinefex Magazine and TORN had an exclusive still from the movie showing Frodo with his knife to Gollum's throat. Needless to say, the image was stunning. So stunning, in fact, that one of our fellow posters decried it as fake, claiming that the Gollum shown in the picture was obviously a wax dummy because "you can see light through his ear just the way it works in reality."<p>Of course this poster was wrong. Dead wrong. The image was a still taken directly from the print of the film, showing the cgi work so groundbreaking and seamless that it fooled even a die-hard naysayer. Get it? He didn't think it looked fake, he thought it looked *SO REAL* that it had to be actual wax replica, couldn't possibly be a digitally created image. When he was proven wrong and realized he couldn't start a fight that way, he moved on. Started calling people "elitist" and impersonating them in the talkback.<p>Not sure what the lesson is here, except that these movies which "haven't aged well" and were "never any good" certainly do seem to bring up stroooooong emotions.<p>Meanwhile, I for one hope Jackson doesn't get a chance to direct the Hobbit, because even though I love LOTR, there are definitely flaws that I cannot overlook, and his self-indulgence has increased exponentially with every movie. Kong was a serious misfire. Lovely Bones was just plain awful. The worst movie he's made. Maybe going back to the Hobbit would be the shot in the arm Jackson needs to right himself. I don't see it happening, and perhaps if MGM loses the film and PJ moves on to other things, we'll find a director that's right for the job.

As for KK....Turd, hows it going buddy? I agree

    by southafricanguy

that its not that bad, certainly not as bad as people make it out to be. But its not really very good either. There s far too much filler, scenes that have no pay-off, seem to go nowhere, and are just pointless. Jack Black is miscast, and the film does feel somewhat self-indulgent. The Skull Island stuff is good adventure, and mostly works, but there are a number of odd creative choices, and really..why turn a 90 minute film into an almost 3 hour film?

    Tarantino on Jackson's King Kong

    by InActionMan

From an interview Tarantino did on NPR's Fresh Air: <P> "To me "King Kong" is a metaphor for America's fear of the black male. And to me that's obvious. All right? So I mean that was one of the first things I said when I was talking to a friend of mine after he saw Peter Jackson's version of "King Kong." And I said, you know, is the racial metaphors in there? Is the racial subtext in there? And he goes no. And I go, well then that's just a story of a big monkey. " <P> You can listen to the interview or read the transcript here: <P> <P>

  • Oct. 9, 2010, 7:39 a.m. CST

by blackwood Jackson's best film. I feel this is indisputable. I love DEAD ALIVE as much as the next guy, but HEAVENLY CREATURES is in a league of it's own, and certainly better than anything else he's done.<P>But I have to admit, I love his KING KONG. Love it to bits. There's an adventuresome recklessness in it that I find very charming. And Naomi Watts is so incredibly good in it. I won't dispute that it could lose about an hour and be a far better film for it. But I still like it a lot.

Still to this day think Elijah was miscast and sections of TTT don't work at all. Fellowship extended edition and Return of the King theatrical are damn near perfect movies tho. Also, I think casting is his biggest weakness as a director. Elijah Wood, Marky Mark, Jack Black, Adrian Brody...I think these were all bad choices. Last thing. Wanted to thank InActionMan for that post. Damn good point.

Ebert's review (which I read after I saw it) sums up my feelings on it. Only strength imho is the lead performance by Saoirse Ronan. Stanley Tucci who is usually brilliant is over the top bad (but got an Oscar nod), and Mark Wahlberg gives another one of his smell the fart performances. Those are just two of the SURFACE problems with the film. There is much more to hate.

    Trig also liked King Kong.

Although he was gravely disappointed by the lack of shit flinging and spontaneous masturbation, as is his wont.

...than The Hobbit get green-lit. Has anyone here got a sense of movie history..? I, for one, am going to miss the lion's roar as the lights go down. That used to be a mark of quality.

... thanks to the Aussie Actors guild? Major national news here, and not a peep on AICN.<br><br>It's not the 'greenlight' news I'm disappointed about not seeing, it's commentary about international actors guilds failing to understand NZ law and threatening to kill The Hobbit.

King Kong is a racial metaphor?

    by fatjesuschrysler

Wow! I thought it was just a movie about a big gorilla. Interesting, Tarantino's very suggestion itself sounds a bit racist.

    the punctuation is killing me

    by chifforobe

Like, omigod-- the puncuation in these things? It's fucking brutal. The writing style of the authors and contributors? Makes preteen girls sound like fucking Dickens. Yet AICN is quoted in trailers for real movies. Worst. Prose. I've. Ever. Read. I don't think anyone here could put together a coherent essay to save their lives, and I'm running out of reasons to subject my eyeballs to it. Have fun folks, srsly.
