AICN HORROR: ZOMBIES & SHARKS - Winners of the NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE & BLUE Documentary Contest + Review!!!
Greetings, all. Ambush Bug here with another AICN HORROR: ZOMBIES & SHARKS column. Why ZOMBIES & SHARKS? Well, those are the two things that I’ve had the most nightmares about. It’s the reason I rarely swim in the ocean. It’s the reason I have an escape plan from my apartment just in case of a zombie apocalypse.
Now if you’ve ever had those fears or fears like them, inspired mainly by nights upon nights of watching films of the frightening kind, this is the place for you. So look for AICN HORROR: ZOMBIES & SHARKS every Friday for the foreseeable future, horror hounds, where we’ll be covering horror in all forms: retro, indie, mainstream, old and new.
This week I have a few things to share with everyone that fall under the banner of horror, starting with a very cool sculpture a reader sent me. Rikk Roberts sent me a few pics of a sculpture he is doing of a zombie fighting a shark (Check out his MySpace and Facebook pages). It sounded like something perfect to post in this column, so he said it’d be ok if I shared it with you all.

The Zombie Vs. Shark (13” x 12”) resin model kit pre-painted statue is available through Scott Kelley of Alternative Images

And now, enjoy your weekly dose of horror!
NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE & BLUE
Contest Winners!
I got a ton of emails requesting some truly cool horror films you wanted to see in the column for our NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE, & BLUE Documentary on the last hundred years of American horror. It was tough to choose the winners. In all honesty, I will probably cover all of the suggestions some time in the future. But I had to choose only eight, so out of all of the emails, I chose the below readers and their suggestions because they are the ones that made me laugh or mutter “cool” under my breath when I saw the suggestion. Seems PONTYPOOL was a crowd favorite, so I’m definitely covering that one, so the first to suggest that was a winner. Below are the winners and the films they suggested. Look for articles focusing on these films in the coming months.
Mike Wiseman – PONTYPOOL
Willie Bates – SLEEPAWAY CAMP
Michael Todd – THE DEAD NEXT DOOR
Sean Hall – HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME
Emily von Seele – MARTIN
Sal Rozzi – BASKET CASE
Justin Ewert – TRICK OR TREAT (80’s version)
Jason Hauser – WERNER HERZOG’S NOSFERATU
Thanks to everyone who sent suggestions and congratulations to the winners. Your DVD of NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE & BLUE: THE EVOLUTION OF THE AMERICAN HORROR FILM is on the way. And for those who didn’t win, check out why you should seek out this cool documentary below!
NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE & BLUE: THE EVOLUTION OF THE AMERICAN HORROR FILM (2010) Documentary directed by Andrew Monument Narrated by Lance Henriksen Review by Ambush Bug
Apart from all of the high-brow stuff, there are plenty of film clips to enjoy from mainstream to obscure films. I could see someone watching this film with a pad and paper, taking down films that they should check out solely from the cool clips shown. Sure everyone has seen clips from JAWS and THE SHINING, but how about KILLER SHREWS? I've seen a lot of horror films, but even I was surprised at how many I put on my must watch list after viewing this film. Each subgenre is represented here: Universal Monsters, psychedelic films, slasher pics, sci fi horror, remakes. You name it, it's at least touched upon.
One other slight beef: no Ed Wood? Really? I know this doc can't cover all American filmmakers, but you'd think a mention would be in order. I did appreciate the lengthy talk about William Castle's films, especially THE TINGLER, but if you’re going to talk about Castle and H.G. Lewis, Wood should at least be mentioned.
And finally, I know this is a little old, but I can’t help but plant this song deep into your brain matter. I know, I’m a sadistic fucker…

that was excellent, that scene was! the music was the best - that organ pipe thing going with the mental bass-breaks on percussion. wish you could get the soundtrack cd or lp somewhere.

While I'm excited to see "Pontypool" get some recognition, it's not an American horror film - it was filmed in Canada, the plot revolves around a small town in Canada, even the book it was based off of takes place in Canada and was written by Tony Burgess, a Canadian. I've reviewed it for my site and book series, I'd be interested to hear if my opinio matches any of yours! Feel free to visit the site, read the review, and share your thoughts: http://thegorescore.com/2010/08/25/g-o-r-e-score-pontypool/

I'll be picking this one up. It's a shame Carpenter seems jaded these days when it comes to delivering movies that underline his opinions. Jaded or disinterested I don't know. Re-wateched In The Mouth Of Madness the other night and after the credits rolled the primary feeling I had was that of, Why the hell ain't he making decent films any more? ...what happened to that ballsy director who knocked out so many classics? I guess it comes down to that line in BLADE RUNNER, "the light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long". JC...wake up, man....

How is that considered for American horror? Great movie, but not American. I don't think it's fair to find fault with a documentary that doesn't talk much about foreign horror contributions when the title of the documentary is specfically America centric. 100 years of horror is a massive subject anyway, you would be talking VOLUMES if you try to include all notable people in the field world wide.

The novel is supposed to be some jacked up stuff. Gonna try and read that sucker some day!

I think you are mixing two different docs up. Terror in the Aisles was hosted by Donald Pleasence and Nancy Allen. The one you are thinking of is It Came From Hollywood, which had segments with Dan Ackroyd, Cheech and Chong, John Candy and Gilda Radner. ICFH was primarily based around B-Movies and Terror was classic horror plus revenge/ thrillers.

Ad since we are talking about Pontypool being Canadian, Werner Herzog's Nosferatu had no American hands in it whatsoever, except when it came to distribution. Unless I'm wrong.
-
And since we are also on the topic of horror docs, I would highly recommend IFC's American Nightmare. I felt it was much more focused in it's subject matter and had a great atmosphere about it. Given the choice, I would opt for it any day. Nightmares in Red, White, and Blue is pretty good, but American Nightmares left a lasting impression.

I know the doc was about American horror, but the idea of the contest was really just to get suggestions for future columns. They could have been from Japan, Canada or wherever. I know it may have been misleading with the contest focusing on American horror. Apologies, if folks were confused.
