Natural Blonde Emma Stone Cast As Gwen Stacy In Sony's SPIDER-MAN Reboot!

Beaks here...

Did you know Emma Stone was a natural blonde? Me neither. She's certainly a talented actress, so I've no quarrel with Sony and Marc Webb casting her as Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker in the SPIDER-MAN reboot. But will audiences, who've grown accustomed to seeing Stone as an undeniably fetching redhead, be just as enamored of her as a blonde? In a statement released by Sony, Marc Webb had this to say of Stone joining the film...
The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde.”
Fortunately, there are attractive and talented redheads out there who'd be wonderful as Mary Jane Watson. But natural hair color aside, Stone just seemed to have the right feisty attitude to play MJ. Such a strange turn of events.

    Emma Stone

    by ConfusedPanda

I like her. She's likable. I know she has deservedly earned the next few years of mainstream success and big dollars. Hopefully she does a good job with this particular franchise.

    also a natural blonde.

    Good News

    by david19

First of all, we now know Gwen Stacy wont be a throw away character like she was in Raimis version, and second Emma Stone in pretty much anything makes my pants feel funny. She is the epitome of sexy, spunky girl next door. Fucking Garfield. Now I must hate him because I assume he gets to make out with her on set now.

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 6:05 p.m. CST

    Damn it

    by shoveller

I can't stand that girl. Still, not like I'm gonna see it anyway...

I can get behind this as long as they kill Stacy

    by moorE12

like they should have in that shitty first Spider-Man movie.

    She is a natural blonde...

    by Mr. Profit

Said it on Chelsea Lately while promoting Easy A and it was remarked at how it was her best career decision. Her relationship with Sony sealed this deal. And she can pull off a tragic death I'm sure that will give the film more weight since she is very likeable...
Maybe now Deborah Ann Woll will be chosen as MJ. I just hope there is no bullshit love triangle and they will allow audiences to like BOTH of Spidey's love interests. MJ can't be the hot bitch who swooped in to take Spidey.

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 6:07 p.m. CST

Still can't buy into Garfield as Spidey...

    by tylerzero

...and now I think Stone NOT being cast as MJ is strike two.

Why cast her for Gwen Stacy?

    Is This.... THE EVENT?

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 6:09 p.m. CST

on Garfield until I see him in the suit. He appears to me to be a bit tall and thin, but maybe after he works out a bit it will be different. But to me the guy looks like a real life version of Peter, just a bit tall.

lmao! That makes the directors shock about finding out shes a natural blonde even funnier.

I would've preferred to see her as Mary Jane. She just seems more right for the Mary Jane role than Gwen Stacy, am I right?

    Cute girl, nothing special!

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 6:18 p.m. CST

    by david19

I wanted her as MJ too, but arguably she doesnt embody the comic version too well, although she does fit USM MJ quite well. If they push her as Gwen and later bring in someone who embodies MJ better I think that would totally work. But honestly, if you really wanted to cast an accurate MJ you need to look at girls as hot as Megan Fox. Emma is perfect as the hot as hell, spunky girl next door. If I had gone to school with her I would have had a mad crush on her. Shes yummy.

I don't know what the big deal is...

    by Orbots Commander

...whether she's a natural blonde, or not. I mean, Amy Adams is ALSO a natural blonde...but who cares? Emma will be playing a fictional red-headed character, so what's the big deal? The girl is talented and she'll do fine.

    I wonder who they'll cast...

    by MajorFrontbum

...for the next five Spiderman reboots?

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 6:45 p.m. CST

But I also don't know how...

    by Orbots Commander

...Sony is going for a teenage Spidey when Garfield is almost 30, unless they're going for that Grease look.
That said, Garfield was damn good in The Social Network and he'll be fine as Spidey; his big emotional scene at the end in the Facebook offices where he gets screwed over, was well done in particular.

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 6:47 p.m. CST

Garfield must have given one good audition

    by drewlicious

While else would the studio decide against casting so young. The trades were going on and on about casting someone under 21 so they could keep the character in high school for a couple of movies. For Andrew Garfield they won't be able to keep in school for more than one movie. He'll be 30 by the time the movie is released and 31 or 31 by the time they get around to shooting another.

kids are toe-headed because of a lack of melanin. as you get older your hair darkens. this happens in EVERYONE. when they say "natural blonde" they mean they had lighter hair as a child. even women who are "real blondes" dye their hair as adults. ps she's ugly. she makes an even worse gwen than mary jane

As long as she is killed byt he green goblin,

    by IndustryKiller!

Thats what matters and thats where Raimi dropped the ball. It's absolutely vital to the character of Peter Parker for that turn of events to unfold AS THEY DID IN THE COMIC BOOK. If she ends up getting killed by The Lizard or some shit, fuck it.

Idiotic casting, I just don't get it

    by thatfilmlover

they get the perfect actress to play MJ, the one fans have been screaming for (by and large) since this thing was announced, and cast her as the other girl. This is like casting Morgan Freeman as François Pienaar in "Invictus".

    by IndustryKiller!

And absolutely true, but I do wonder what Gwen Stacy's role int eh first film will be, because its possible she wont die until the second film and MJ wont be a major player until the third. I still say Mary Elizabeth Winstead would be a good choice for MJ, but you're right, Stone would have been perfect.

I don't get this at all. She has the personality and looks for MJ. I don't care if she is naturally blond, personality wise I thought she'd make a far better MJ (and look the part, c'mon that IS important) than the terribly boring Dunst. :/

Emma is PERFECT for MJ. She is gorgeous, smart and awesome with one liners, to me this makes no snese. Anyone who thinks Emma Stone is plain or a pretty girl and that's it has absolutely no eye for talent. Emma rocks it in EVERY role she gets. Yes I do happen to be in love with Emma Stone, doesn't change the fact that the girl is hugely talented! ;)

    by cgih8r

I cannot post that enough. Whatever this movie is its going to be an improvement to Raimi's crying emo spiderman. I hope this movie turns out to be something solid that captures the true spirit of the comics and makes people realize just how bad those first 3 movies were. And I just know somebody is now going to correct me and say Spiderman 2 was some kind of masterpiece. Doc Oc was the best villain comparatively but the rest was Buulll Shiiiet.

they had a blonde playing the redhead and a redhead playing the blonde.

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 7:41 p.m. CST

She can play Gwen, MJ, or Swiss Miss for all I care, she's great

    by Tall_Boy66

Gal's a solid actress, as long as she's in the flick. To be fair, I saw her more as MJ just because of her redhead-dye job and she had a sultry voice that fit her.

  • and fighting over Peter. He's gonna be a playa. Nothing for him to get emo about over that. Last time I remember Peter losing it while MJ kept her cool like when Harry died. And now the chicks are actually good looking for a change so that's a plus. No epic fail on the radar yet.

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 7:42 p.m. CST

I'm gonna sob when Stone gets thrown by Golbin

    by Tall_Boy66

Oh no. I know this series will last long enough, at least 3 movies, to kill her off. As long as she doesn't fuck Norman and have bastard twins in Europe. I'll be hard enough watching her die. Which will probably happening in the third movie, I would assume.

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 7:43 p.m. CST

She has Romita eyes, I aprove

    by Argentino

Also, this probably means Mary Jane will be a secondary character at best, which is great. Having "everyman" Peter Parker hook up with a supermodel is just retarded. I don't care if it's a comicbook or a movie, it's just fucking retarded.

This sucks! I wanted her as MJ!

    by Zardoz

I thought it was perfect casting for once. Stone has the sultry, sexy voice and personality for MJ. I don't care if she's a natural blonde; she's been a redhead in every movie she's been in and that's how the public perceives her. Whatever, don't care anymore...

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 7:47 p.m. CST

Remember when Rami did the faux-bridge scene in Spider-Man 1?

    by Tall_Boy66

That was horseshit. It had a funny line by Goblin. "Some lunatic comes along with a sadistic choice!" But I remember being miffed they did the famous bridge scene. With the wrong girl. And she didn't die. So Emma's going headfirst off a bridge at some point, and I still say in the third movie her time is up. Which is going to be uber-tragic. Unless they go Ultimate Spider-Man route where she's randomly killed by Carnage. Then brought back as Carnage / Gwen. Then just Gwen. As much as this flick is supposedly influenced by Ultimate Spider-Man, I doubt they're gonna go that route.

    it's not about hair color

    by CreamCheeseAlchemist

Emma Stone does seem to be a better choice for MJ- hair color easily dealt with (dye, wig) or adapted (the only thing Dragonball Evolution got right). But she is an actress. I think her playing MJ would be typecasting. My concern is that there's only the sort of suspense Greek tragedy had when you show the likes of Gwen Stacy and Harvey Dent. Ultimate Spiderman played with that, as probably the Spectacular Spiderman show would've... and one of the high points of The Batman show was retelling Harvey Dent's fall with an original character. Whereas it's lame when Clone Wars has an episode where it looks like a character might die but their fate was shown in one of the movies. Back to Gwen- anyone read Physics of Superheroes? Pete probably did kill Gwen by accident.

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 7:54 p.m. CST

Marvel's tried to retcon that Gobby was holding a Gwen corpse

    by Tall_Boy66

Or she died from shock of the fall. So she was dead before Gobby tossed her. But if you read Marvels, the character explicitly states he heard a snap. I always believe Pete killed Gwen. Way more tragic that way.
Seriously, seeing that scene with Emma Stone - I guarantee it will happen in this film series - is going to make me sob. Less for Gwen but more for Emma Stone. It'll work great, though. Will happen. Mark the calendars. 2019 probably.

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 8:01 p.m. CST

    Doubt it's going to be a Twilight/Saw year-long churn

    by Tall_Boy66

Taking into account the abandoned Rami Spider-Man 4, this has been in development for a long time and it's still going to be almost 2 years until the movie is actually out. I think they'll ramp up the sequels, but it'll be two years, MAYBE 3 at the max in between them. I'd love a Spider-Man movie a year, I think it'd be great. But they're too FX heavy to happen that quickly.

I love how they always try to hide Stone's freckles.

    by MST3KPIMP

what with the overlit photo shoots & photoshopped posters. Hollywood hates freckles. Until you screw up and fall out of favor like Lyndsey THEN it's freckles ga'lor as they associate freckles with bad behaviour.

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 8:28 p.m. CST

    by Tall_Boy66

What you're seeing is a typical kneejerk reaction by the majority of talkbackers to spew something negative. People find out she's playing MJ? People who like, say yay and move onto the next story. People who hate post. That's just how AICN works. Using Talkbackers as a focus group for reality is a fairly bad idea.

  • Oct. 5, 2010, 8:31 p.m. CST

They're gonna do Raimi's Harry Goblin arc with Norman

    by Tall_Boy66

Dollars to donuts the grand scheme of this Spidey trilogy (everyone plans trilogies, other movies are just gravy) is Norman is in part one. Becomes Goblin by part 3. Also tosses lovely Emma Stone/Gwen Stacy off the bridge in that movie. I'll put money down that's how this film series will play out in the large brush strokes.

Indeed you would seem to be correct. I for one am happy enough with her being in the film at all. She's got talent, in my opinion, and that's what counts. Say what you will about the reboot, but they certainly seem to be putting effort into making this something worthwhile and decent, as opposed to a simple cash cow.

    SHE LOOKS LIKE GWEN STACY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by Illuminate

She looks like Gwen Stacy. She does have red hair in some of her other movies, however, with all do respect she doesn't have the face or body of a supermodel which MJ has. Remember, MJ is a supermodel who is different from other supermodels because she is not superficial and she falls in love with a nerd: Peter Parker. That is an awesome story which was never explored in the movies previously. It is Cinderella for all the comic book fans. Here is a reminder of MJ's supermodel looks: Emma Stone does not have the boobs or perfect face to play MJ. But, she does have the slightly above average looks and personality to play a good Gwen Stacy. I have new found respect for Sony and the director for paying respect to what made the comic so successful. It is looking like they are paying more respect to the comic source than the previous movies. : )

    by Johnny Ahab

I’m losing any faith in a good Spider-man movie from here on out. This gawky Garfield dude may be a good actor, but I’m not sold on him as Peter P. And hey, they fucked up the female casting in the last trio, let’s fuck it up again! Think about Gwen Stacy – about as bland vanilla white girl as possible – that’s who Kirsten Dunst should have played last time!!! Now you get hot, smoky-voiced REDHEAD Emma Stone, a natural for MJ, and they make her the bland nice girl. Fuck it – these suits don’t know the comics and aren’t fanboys AT ALL. Way to go, Amy Pascal! Let’s mess up the franchise a second time!!! Dumb-asses.

I have hundreds of Amazing Spider-Man, Web Of Spider-Man, and etc. comics. The last I checked Emma Stone does not have 1. A face of a supermodel. 2. A D-cup of a supermodel (Stone is flat) Garfield is the right choice for Spider-Man since he is more humble than that douche-asshole: Tobey Maguire who acted like he's tired of the Spider-Man movies in interviews. GOOD BYE LOSER. Garfield looks nerdy and awkward which is what Peter Parker is all about. I hope they make him look like the best he has ever looked when swinging through the air. In previous movies Rami made him look like he is taking a shit with his 60's homage. The coolest that Spider-Man ever looked was with Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. He made him actually look cool swinging through the air and I hope that they do it this time around.

    by lettersoftransit

back when DC comics romance stories were about as deep as that ultra thin carbon those two guys got a Nobel prize for inventing, Marvel's romance stories were full-on soap opera, which will always resonate with teenagers in raging hormones. Gwen was the unwitting goddess who loved peter instantly because she heard he was brilliant. killing the character forever killed my interest in reading the comics, though I returned to them from time to time out of a simple need to stay current and aware. I never read the retconned norman osbourne abomination, but I am sure it's a good thing to have on hand if you're an aspiring writer and you need to remind yourself from time to time that working pros can and do write things worse than you could ever come up with.

    by andrew coleman

Read the book that came out about Spider-man 3. Raimi planned the movie to be about Vulture and Sandman with Harry's rise to Green Goblin that would have happened in SP4. Because of FANS bitching about Venom the studio demanded Venom be in 3 and pushed Vulture out... They had Vulture's costume and casted Ben Kingsley. Studio tossed all that out to have Venom. Without the Vulture story they pushed up Harry's arc and then Raimi I think out of spite made a corny 3rd act. I have no trust in Webb at all! And all I know is the villain better be the Lizard! I've been waiting like 9 years to hear Lizard would be the baddie!

If you dont like Garfield as Spider Man, you dont get the charac

    by IndustryKiller!

Its that simple. THe guy is perfect for the role. I dont understand this ridiculous concept that Peter Parker was at any point the Revenge of the Nerds caricature Macguire played him as. Socially uncomfortable is different that uber-nerd. Parker wasn't cool, but he wasn't some annoying cosplaying super geek either. Macguire had ZERO arc across three films. He was the same annoying nerd he was at the end of 3 as he was in the beginning of 1. Parker stopped being a reedy dweeb right after high school and became a cool adult. Garfield is a more versatile actor than Macguire and he's shown incredible vulnerability in Never Let Me Go and The Social Network yet proved he can have a bit of swagger in Red Riding. If you dont like the casting, you're wrong. That simple.

    by Zardoz

So, yeah, Gwen's going to be a really juicy, tragic role for an actress, so I can see why Stone would rather do that part instead of MJ. The question is, if they're going to kill her right off in the first movie or save it for later. And since everyone saw the rip-off of her comics' death in Spidey 1, and if the producers don't want to do Goblin as a villain again in the re-boot, maybe they'll use different Spidey villain to kill Gwen off this time. (That way, it's a surprise to comic-fans and non-fans, as well.) I don't know, I like Stone, and Garfield was great in "The Social Network", so I think he'll be great as PP. I dig Emma Stone being in this movie even though I loathe the idea of this reboot so far. I just can't see Garfield doing this justice and feel strongly that Donald Glover could of hands down pulled off a better turn as Peter/Spidey.

Excited about Spider-Man coming to the big screen! The "old" movies, while entertaining at first, are totally forgettable. The only thing that will be hard to top is the origin, first half of the first movie. Hoping for a flashback retelling à la IH. Or an animated comic book style intro even.

    Let me get this straight...

    by WavingFlagsInSpace

...if they having Gwen Stacy in the movie then they have to have the Green Goblin, if they're going to stay faithful to canon.
So this reboot is basically a remake of the first Spiderman film, released waaaaaayyyyy back in, errr, 2002. Sheesh, at least Batman Begins used 'new' villians, unseen before its release.
Now, if they're going to throw the history out the window then excellent, let's have a whole new take on the Spiderman mythos, but just watch the die-hards go 'boooo!'

And the Goblin better look like the comic book Goblin or don't bother! That was the main problem with Raimi's Spidey - his Goblin looked dreadful; like some Mighty Morphin Ranger.

    I just hope...

    by HarryKnowlesNonExistentInceptionReview

...Webb still has Spidey in a slightly "off" universe where weirdo science is possible. That's what I liked about Raimi's Spidey flicks. "Yeah, I've invented a new form of nuclear power that I manipulate with a set of cyborg octopus arms grafted to my brain stem." "Yeah, I fell into an open air atomic accelerator and got fused with a bunch of sand." They never tried to explain things in real-life terms too much and that was as it should be.

    No Mary Jane!

    by matchesmalone2380

It's great that they're finally going to use Gwen Stacy, since the character was so poorly used in Spidey 3. Just don't kill her off until a possible second movie. Like Batman Begins and Dark knight, have the character develop, bring in Goblin for the second movie, then kill her off. As for MJ, leave her until a supporting character for the second movie. She was a supporting character for a long time before becoming Spidey's love interest. Dunst did not do her justice in any of the spidey movies! Was there a scene in any of the Spidey movies that Dunst wasn't crying? Plus she was always getting kidnapped by the villains. How many times in the comic books has MJ been kidnapped? I remember she actually kicked Chameleon's ass once with a baseball bat. Until I hear good reviews from fans, I'll hold my breath on this one.

    Teenage love triangle?

    by BizarroJerry

I suppose its in keeping with the character's roots, but I'm guessing this is gonna be a Spidey movie aimed more at teens than the last run of them. Cuz, ya know, every movie has to be for teens.

Emma Stone must be playing Ultimate Gwen Stacy

    by SpyGuy

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN's version of Gwen Stacy depicts her as a more rebellious, punkish character as a contrast to the geekier version of Mary Jane. If this is the case for the new film, Stone makes perfect sense for Gwen.

  • Oct. 6, 2010, 9:35 a.m. CST

    by AsimovLives

Isn't gwen who should be the geeky while MJ is the spunky? Sinc ePeter Parker is such a nerd, doesn't it make sense that the first girl who would feel attracted to him would be a geek/nerd girl as well? (albeit pretty enough to look like a girl next door type). After the Gwen romanc,e then maybe the nerd Peter parker could get enough self-confidence to gain the attention and the heart of a bombshell like MJ. That's my take on it, anyway.

  • Oct. 6, 2010, 9:47 a.m. CST

So he IS a teenager in this?

    by The_Motorcycle_Boy

I thought that the casting of Garfield - who really, really can't pass for a high schooler - meant that we'd be seeing a Peter in college, early 20s... There goes some of my interest.
With Gwen Stacy and the Venom rumours swirling, it sounds like they'll be doing that Ultimate Spider-Man comic? Sad if true, the bits I've read are woeful.

Hoping for the Goblin done right

    by FlyingToupee

They need to reintroduce the Green Goblin and do it right. Perhaps introduce Norman in the first film, and(assuming there is a second) do an adaptation of Spider-Man #'s 39-40 and 121-122. And then MJ can be Peter's main squeeze in the third film.

Agreeing with IndustryKiller!, I was never a fan of Maguire. To me, the best representative of the Peter Parker archetype was the character of Xander on Buffy. Not an uber-nerd, but socially awkward. Still decent looking. And great at coming up with quips and comebacks. The only difference was that Xander wasn't very booksmart, but Peter's a genius.

    Bad Idea/Miscasting

    by Barron34

Stone would make a good Mary Jane. She has the feisty attitude and looks like the character. Gwen Stacy is the blander character, a sort of good girl/next door type. This is mis-casting. And, if the filmmakers stick anywhere near to the comics (SPOILER) Gwen Stacy dies soon and tragically in the storyline. Emma Stone would make a much better MJ than Gwen Stacy. I have no idea what the filmmakers where thinking when they (mis-) cast her. She should be Mary Jane Watson.

Might be refreshing if they kept her out of this. Oh, and of course, kill Gwen (in the sequel if not in this one). I wonder what the average non-comic reading moviegoer will think about this film after seeing Gwen introduced in Spider-Man 3? I sill don't get why they are rebooting rather than just recasting.
