Which Star Of The Original FRIGHT NIGHT Will Turn Up In The Remake? Beaks Has Exclusive Details!

Beaks here...

Earlier today, Mania reported that the original Jerry Dandrige, Chris Sarandon, will appear in the Craig Gillespie-directed remake of FRIGHT NIGHT. Since I was on set in Albuquerque, New Mexico the night Sarandon shot his scene, I can confirm this is true. It's a shame this got out there. Sarandon's cameo was intended to be a surprise for fans of Tom Holland's 1985 classic. I can't get into specifics, but his scene will certainly slake the thirst of FRIGHT NIGHT devotees. It's definitely not a throwaway cameo; in fact, I think it links the original and the remake in a very appropriate way. Having conducted a phone interview with Sarandon a couple of years ago, I was thrilled to meet him in person. There were a lot of great actors on set the day I dropped by for a visit, but only one played Leon Shermer in freakin' DOG DAY AFTERNOON. We chatted briefly, and he jokingly asked if I was excited to see the "magic" of filmmaking firsthand (the crew was in the process of setting up a stunt - in which he was involved). He seemed especially intrigued by the new 3D RED rig being used that evening. I'll save the particulars of our discussion for my set visit article - which probably won't run until next year, as the new FRIGHT NIGHT won't hit theaters until October 7th, 2011. But Sarandon is in for one scene only. As for any other cameos, let's all be Geminis and expect the unexpected.

Fright Night was a smart concept with

    by Dingbatty

a compelling performance by McDowell and quite a few iconic moments/imagery, paying homage to Hammer Horror in an age of mindless slasher films totally devoid of any solid concept or plot. You can forgive its weaknesses and topical aesthetic in light of the era it was produced, and probably had to have seen it when it was fresh. Hardly overrated.

I'm going to assume that the cameo will make its way into the advertising of the film, ruining for all fans what would have been a great surprise. And, regarding the film, McDowell is great in the role - anybody nowadays would play it as wacky, campy, ironic... anything to ruin the film. While the new take on the vampire hunter as a Vegas magician is interesting, I dare them to portray him as vulnerable and conflicted.

    KilliK: You Mean "Rear Window"?

    by Media Messiah

No, the film that ripped Hitchock's Rear Window off, and indirectly so, was Body Double, although it was a good update...and a great classic, in itself. However, in the case of Dysturbia, its writers took the outline of Fright Night directly, and just changed the Vampire into a Serial Killer, as I said, and then altered just a few other things in the original script, and slightly so--but the script outline remains almost exact, in terms of Dysturbia's theft. Was Fright Night a little inspired by Rear Window? Yes, I am sure, but they really took the concept and ran with it their own way, however, again, Dysturbia's writers almost did a complete duplicate of Fright Night, in terms of the story outline, from First Act of the script, to the 2nd Act, and the Third of the story arc, and that is the difference. An inspiration is one thing, a complete rip-off is a whole other kind of animal--and Dysturbia is a rip-off of Fright Night, from middle, and top to bottom, and then...back to middle again!!!

  • Oct. 2, 2010, 12:46 a.m. CST

    Saw it at flicks

    by Kenny8

Was great on release for it's time compared to the usual slasher fest back then. I'd say McDowell will be making an appearance somehow, like Bixby in The Hulk. I bet nobody is hoping this does well more than Tennant. He went from "Doctor Who" to just "Who?" virtually overnight

  • Oct. 2, 2010, 12:52 a.m. CST

Fright Night watched as a child

    by A_Clockwork_Irony

was somewhat scary. As an adult it is awesome as it is clearly winking at its audience. Kind of in the same way Big Trouble in Little China did. In other words, regardless of whether one likes it, it is exactly what the makers wanted it to be. So many movies today have no sense of irony and are just plain stupid. "What's a matter, Charlie? Afraid I was gonna come in without being invited first?"

  • Oct. 2, 2010, 1:03 a.m. CST

I wonder if Sarandon will play--

    by A_Banned_Apart

    Fright Night Update

    by Doctor_Nonsensical

I don't particularly care how much they jerk the story around with the whole magician aspect - what I'm wondering is if this film will have that fun, iconic, cool heart at its core, or if they're going to tear that out as well. I don't know much about Tennant (not big on Doctor Who), but Colin Farrell doesn't strike me as a good replacement for Chris Sarandon. Is that really the best person they could find?

  • Oct. 2, 2010, 1:20 a.m. CST

Rear Window is a hardly seen film starring some actor called James Stewart by some director called Alfred Hitchcock - obviously none of these names are remembered as I don't think they amounted to much more than some of the best films in cinematic history...sigh

Yes MST3KPIMP, there is a FRIGHT NIGHT 2...

    by Master Bruce

and it is horrible....everything that the original film is not. FRIGHT NIGHT is a classic - well, a cult classic anyway - and although there's a layer of irony to it, the sequel goes for a campier tone which just fails...a werewolf bowling for fuck's sake...really? The idea of Jerry Dandridge's sister wanting revenge on Charlie & Vincent is pretty good, & Mcdowall, Ragsdale & the actress playing Dandridge's sister are all good, but the script is just plain awful. This is one thing that should NEVER rise from the dead.

That the cool comic book series from Now Comics will finally be collected in trade paperback form, to tie-in with the impending media blitz for this upcoming remake. A few years back someone (director Tom Holland if I'm not mistaken), with a stake in the ownership rights of the property, mentioned this as a possibility...but nothing ever came to fruition. Those comics were (and still are) great, and constitute the only true sequel to the movie, as opposed to the uber-forgettable straight-to-video style sequel. Now Comics were ahead of their time too, what with their emphasis on "Special 3D" issues, complete with anaglyphic carboard glasses packaged with the comics!

Sarandon is an actor's actor and quite an intelligent gentelman who can discuss the art world with his peers as easily as he can talk fangs and fake blood with horror fans. I was trying to explain to someone why I liked Timothy Olyphant's "Justified" so much, and it was early in the morning after a night with only 3 hours sleep. I could only come up with the name "James Elroy" to identify the famous noir crime author whose work the series was based so Chris said, "It's Elmore Leonard", with much entusiasm. The guy is sharp as a tack and knows his shit. It was a pleasure to work with him.

    I'll say it again....

'Fright Night' series from Now Comics...better than the actual sequel. Fact. 'Fright Night' remake...will likey be inferior to both the original movie and the comic book spin-off...an impending future fact in the process of actualization.

    TheTallMan--Re: Fright Night

    by Media Messiah

I'm glad that they are finally taking their credit (the makers of Fright Night) where credit, is due. Hollywood often steals film outlines from other films, and retools them as something else--something that may appear original, that is, until you look deeper. For instance, Gran Torino. The film Gran Torino, is a rip-off of the original Karate Kid film and Karate Kid 2, absent the martial arts, which are replaced by guns. They also changed the old man (Mr. Miyagi) from an Asian to a White, and the kid (Daniel, played by Ralph Macchio...in Karate Kid), was changed from White to Asian. Oh, and the old man is now a bigot who curses a lot--still, the conflicts are the same; you'll even recall the old man (Clint Eastwood) in Gran Torino, demanding that the kid fix-up his property for him, ala the "Wax on, wax-off" gag from Karate Kid, and of course, there are the kid's issues with bullies--as the film's main McGuffin?<BR><BR>In terms of structure, they only changed the ending, and added the gang rape, and the old man is now dying of a disease in this version, and thus, sacrifices himself for the kid. Save for those tweaks in the 3rd act of the film, and the sister of the boy being added, becoming a partial amalgam of the girlfriends from the two first two Karate Kid films. The newly created sister character, then is written to split Daniel's storyline, with the prime amalgam for Daniel's character in Gran Torino, that being the boy--aka, her brother. The film is about 65 percent Karate Kid and Karate Kid 2, 35 percent additive. BTW, the kid even gets the car, the Gran Torino, from the old man. You'll recall, in Karate Kid, Miyagi gave Daniel a car. Structurally, it is largely, the same script. <BR><BR>Upon seeing Dysturbia, I instantly noticed that the structure of the story outline was the same as Fright Night, and hence, I thought it only fair to point it out--and I have been doing that since the time of the film's release. I am glad that others are starting to notice the clear theft of the film's story by the writers of Dysturbia, and hopefully, the same will happen in regard to exposing the similarities between the original Karate Kid and Gran Torino.

SavageDave: Those Who Were Banned, Deserved it!!!!

    by Media Messiah

Save for Chcolate Woman, who you forgot to mention, everybody on your list deserved to be banned for being simplistic, boring and immature. Chcolate Woman was cool, sexy...in a twisted way, and although wild and weird--at least, she had something to say, between her rages of shockingly blue comedy--and techical film background, which she used to often educate many here, on film techniques...and equipment. However, those on your list, in all fairness, were not adding anything of import to the Talk Backs, just a lot of name calling. <BR><BR>I miss you Chcolate Woma, wheever you are?
