Fantastic Fest day 2 - Harry says MOTHER'S DAY is triumphantly & seriously F'd up!
Hey Folks Harry here with the first film of day 2 of Fantastic Fest. This was the remake of the Troma Classic... MOTHER'S DAY. The original film was more of a campy bloody tongue in cheek affair. The new film is less of an overt genre film in the Horror sense, instead it is more of a throwback to films like PACIFIC HEIGHTS and THE HAND THAT ROCKED THE CRADLE.... Along with the classic crime films like DESPERATE HOURS and PETRIFIED FOREST, albeit far tougher in terms of visual intensity and basic sleaziness. The film has a pretty terrific cast, with Shawn Ashmore having a nice role as a doctor trying to keep an evil man alive. Jaime King plays Beth, who has lost her son in a tragic accident, and has been living in a new home for two months when the shit hits the fan. she and her husband are having a bit of a get together with about 8 people shooting pool and the shit. The front door was left unlocked and when a gang of three brothers, one with a shotgun blast in his side crash the shindig, things get intense. what keeps this from being a run of the mill Home Invasion story is the presence of Rebecca De Mornay as the mother of the gang of brothers and Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica from TRUE BLOOD) as the daughter. The story that the filmmakers took for the basic premise is the true life Wichita Horror that was a terrifying home invasion incident that happened in Wichita, Kansas. which involved two brothers and 5 victims. this is a slightly inflated situation, but still. Sadly believable. I say sadly because it is sad that we know something as heinous as the actions in this film are... Realistic. it might feel a little long, but if you think about it, the film is playing relatively in real time, and I guarantee if you were in this situation, it would seem to be a lifetime, whether you lived or died. Good film, tough and mean. it does have distribution.

actually, this seems like some of Harry's more coherent writing. i only count 3 unnecessary and misused ellipses, and NO ridiculous hyphens. could this be an imposter?

Hopefully this will be better than that "My Bloody Valentine 3D" shitfest she was in. I saw that movie because of all the enthusiastic reviews on here, and I should have known these fuckers overrated it because they saw 3D tits.

Like Liv and Scott in "The Strangers", then I may enjoy this. I hated how both of them were punks in that movie who didn't fight back.

I love horror movies but when I saw this when it came out in the early 80' s I walked out, the only movie I ever walked out of, rape is not entertaining!

If you want to see a movie with a great cast showing a mom reigning over a family of criminals then see Animal Kingdom. You should see it anyway but at the very least see it instead of some grab bag shitfest remake of a boring b movie.

Haven't seen a modern horror film capture the 80's slasher vibe in ages. The 3D only makes it more fun. 3D protruding eyeball FTW.

The original MOTHER'S DAY was a home movie (Troma, what else?). The remake is undiluted tedium that will reward even insomiacs with hibernation. For God's sake, Harry, write a professional review; stop rendering 'em in fingerpaint. Troma has long been DOA; the surviving ensemble erected a makeshift booth at last week's MonsterMania conclave--in spite of the voluminous attendance, the display inly drew flies.

I'm gonna repost this in a few other talkbacks. Please be kind enough to help me out. In honor of D.Vader and in response to Harry Knowles's email in which Harry threatened to permanently ban D. Vader if **WE** became annoying in our protests ("Chris will have a 90 day ban, unless he and his friends get annoying, in which case his ban will become perm.") Ain't it cool, guys? Threatening to ban someone for a protest initiated by OTHERS? And remember - this is from the fat liberal protest-worshiping toad himself! Guess "peace" and "love" and "power to the people" ain't exactly all that when it's directed at the capricious whims of you, your contributors and your site. For purposes of solidarity and protest, I'm taking Ain't It Cool out of my drop down menu, set my Outlook Reminder, and am avoiding this site for ninety (90) days - I'll return 12/28/10. If Vader's back, cool. If not, well, like others have said, there are plenty of OTHER sites to get this shit from. The one redeeming grace of this site has been the talkbacks and the people (smart, stupid, crazy, fun, insane, wild, angry people) in the talkbacks. But it looks like Harry et al. have decided to behave in a dictatorial and willfully impulsive manner, alienating many talkbackers. I'm done. See you in ninety!
