The further we get into the casting process on Sony's SPIDER-MAN reboot, the more excited I get about this project.
According to EW's Nicole Sperling, director Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield (the new Peter Parker) recently met with Emma Stone and Mia Wasikowska for the roles of Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy. Sperling doesn't specify which characters the girls are up for, but I have to imagine MJ is redhead Stone's part to lose (or, more likely, turn down). And while Wasikowska might not have been anyone's first choice for blondie Gwen, she's certainly got the looks and more than enough talent to pull it off.
This is pretty simple: if either actress is interested, make 'em an offer. I just hope there's enough on the page to justify their involvement. After opening Screen Gems' EASY A to $18 million last weekend, Stone might be too big to take a supporting role in a superhero film; then again, she's also in the running for a part in Sony's 21 JUMP STREET movie (with Jonah Hill), so perhaps the studio is grooming her for a star vehicle somewhere down the line. Wasikowska, on the other hand, seems to be more interested in serious dramatic work (in fact, Sperling indicates that Wasikowska seems like a long shot at this point); I'd love to see her act opposite Garfield, but preferably in something where they're on equal footing.
Interestingly, HitFix's Greg Ellwood is hearing that Stone might be up for a role that isn't Mary Jane - which is madness, but underscores how little we know about the content of this new SPIDER-MAN at present. He also says Teresa Palmer (THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE) and Lily Collins (THE BLIND SIDE) have met with Sony on SPIDER-MAN as well.
SPIDER-MAN is currently scheduled for a 2012 release.
