So That "Edgy" Ratner Produced SNOW WHITE May Not Suck After All?? It Might Be Close To Finding Its Star And Director...

Merrick here...
Back in June, we learned that Ratner would be producing an "edgy" adaptation of SNOW WHITE, based on the Brothers Grimm source material that's available HERE. The notion of Ratner steering this material...even if only in a producorial capacity...was neither promising or tantalizing. But some new developments could soon make this project considerably more interesting. Per THIS piece at Pajiba, one of the site's regular sources is indicating that Jean-Pierre Jeunet (CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, MICMACS, AMELIE, and ALIEN RESURRECTION) is circling the project with an eye towards directing it. And who might be his "edgy" Snow White? Pajiba says Natalie Portman could be interested. Very compelling if true, and more power to Ratner & Company if they actually manage to pull together a project with this complexion. More as we know more...

    Fables Movie...NOW!

    by amrcanpoet

Screw all this "edgy" Snow White, Alice, Brothers Grimm, etc. stuff. Give us a great Fables movie. The comic is amazingly written, and what Willingham has done to turn popular fable/fairytale characterization on its ear is amazing.

Jeunet f-ed up Alien: Resurrection - which had an existing history and cannon. Similarly, Snow White has its own history. By adding his own style Jeunet will ruin Snow White.

Jeunet isn't completely at fault for Alien: Resurrections since the story is already god-awful on it's own.

As far as Jeunet's other films - meh.

    Snow White >Is< Edgy...

by Flummage are all fairy tales. That's what fair tales are -- dark, fantastical, Gothic morality slash 'em ups masquerading as harmless childrens' confection.

People who crying that nobody wants 'edgy' fairy tales might want to take note that this is hardly a new direction, for fairy tales themselves, or even for people's popular >understanding< of fairy tales. There's been discussions in the past for such stories to be removed from classrooms and young education, for example.

The interesting news is that Jeunet is looking to helm it. Which automatically qualities as as cool news, in this geeks books.

  • Sept. 22, 2010, 12:17 p.m. CST

    by Flummage

In the hands of the appropriate people a big or small screen Fables adventure would also be most welcome. Considering what Fables is, a kind of romantically subversive ballad to all things fairy tailish, it almost seems a more ripe property, a next step, then this might be.

But these stories are are always ripe for retelling, so I'll take either.

    Alien resurrection was a disaster

    by kwisatzhaderach

A DISASTER. Jeunet's tone was completely wrong.

  • Sept. 22, 2010, 12:21 p.m. CST

    by frozen01

Fables is good, but not THAT good. All they've done is taken fairy tale characters and given them modern-day personalities. That's not that ground-breaking. The stories themselves are actually kind of boring, in all honesty. Try reading The Unwritten or House of Mystery if you want an interesting take on literature or literary characters.

I love how Cameron created this super mother monster alien that is totally one tough and mean muther, yet when it appears in Ressurection, we wait the entire flick for it to be unleashed on the crew, yet when it gets its big moment, the mutant alien kills it with one blow, slicing through it as if it were butter.

I agree on MCG's producing skills. I actually enjoy Chuck which he exec produces. And We Are Marshall, while not anything AMAZING, is not a bad film at all. However, if we're talking dream Fairy Tale projects, I'd love to see a Tim Burton directed Into The Woods (another Stephen Sondheim musical, and Burton did a great job with Sweeney Todd).

Hollywood, how do we get this through your brains? Everyone I know went to "Alice" because it was kid-friendly, or for the visuals, or for Johnny Depp. NOT BECAUSE IT WAS EDGY. The movie would have BOMBED if they'd tried to make it edgy, nobody would have gone to see it. EDGY is a four-letter word, kids. Financially you'd be better off TWILIGHT-ing the damn thing!
