Hercules Says NBC’s
THE EVENT Offers Fall’s
Best New Broadcast Pilot!!

I am – Hercules!!
“The Event,” a cross between “24” and “Lost,” comes to us from Nick Wauters, who scripted an episode of “Medium,” an episode of “The 4400,” an episode of “Eureka.” Though its pilot isn’t nearly as good as the pilots for “24” or “Lost,” I still judge it to be the best of the early-fall broadcast entries. Its ensemble cast is packed with familiar faces, among them Jason Ritter (“Joan of Arcadia”), Blair Underwood (“L.A. Law”), Scott Patterson (“Gilmore Girls’), Zeljko Ivanek (“True Blood”) and Laura Innes (“ER”). The narrative is packed with flashbacks and flashforwards covering a 13-month period, a lot of them offering clues to what’s going on. The Ritter character is a vacationer who finds himself caught up in an enormous conspiracy. Underwood plays a new U.S. president who comes to learn the CIA is maintaining a strange top-secret detainment center in the Alaskan wilderness. Ivanek is the government operative who’s been doing the covering up. Innes is an enigmatic figure apparently possessed of, at minimum, extraordinary knowledge. We don’t learn in the pilot what The Event is, but we’re left with the impression it’s something big. I’m not certain there’s a series here, but I can tell you that its first hour is strong enough to guarantee I’ll be tuning in for its second and probably its third. USA Today says:
… Questions, and lots of them, are what NBC has been seeding all summer with an insistent campaign designed to make you wonder, "what event?" The good news is that by the time you get halfway through the enjoyably exciting premiere, you'll most likely want to know the answer to that query. And the potential, built-in bad news is that by the hour's end, you won't be much closer to the answer. … knows the game it's playing and its risks. You can tell from the wink-at-the-audience last line, delivered by the always-welcome Innes: "I haven't told you everything." … Tell us more — and soon would probably be best.
The New York Times says:
… A thriller that leaves no device of the genre underdeployed, “The Event” zigzags between the personal and the political, and back and forth across the calendar among cruise ships, military drones, planes and automobiles. It travels to a house in Atlanta, a prison in Alaska, a beach on St. Lucia, and Coral Gables, Fla., where the Cuban-American president, played by Blair Underwood with a kind of no-nonsense humanism, maintains his nautically suggestive retreat. You accumulate frequent-flier miles just by watching. … bright and showy and too in thrall to its own hysteria to feel unsettling. It doesn’t quiet down enough to disturb, and as a result its claims to relevance seem merely perfunctory. … In another era it was possible to produce a thriller of this kind and forgo images of children in peril, but today our anxieties are so unevenly divided between potential threats to domestic life and broader distrust of institutions that it seems almost a prerequisite for bad things to happen in living rooms. On this count, “The Event” brings it on.
The Los Angeles Times says:
Welcome back to the big leagues, NBC. With Monday night's premiere of "The Event," the network that as recently as last year seemed hopelessly mired in creative and financial chaos has finally located a tent pole, a new show as big, brash and promising as "Heroes" was a few years back. … clearly seeks to fill the hole left by " Lost," albeit, one hopes, in a less loose-ends-loving way. Just as "Lost's" greatest strength was character arc — what will happen to an assortment of fairly ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstance — "The Event" seems prepared to make its characters as complex as its storyline, always an event worth attending.
TV Squad says:
… compelling; it kept my interest and it made me want to see more, which is all I can ask of any pilot. The show has an extremely appealing lead in Jason Ritter, who plays Sean, a vacationing good guy who gets caught up in a terrifying mystery. So if you're having 'FlashForward' anxiety attacks, just know that Ritter is far more endearing than Joseph Fiennes ever was in that arcane and off-putting ABC show. 'The Event' was a well-paced hour that played skillfully with time, and if the characters were a little thin, well, it's a pilot -- it'll take time to give characters shading and dimension. …
The San Francisco Chronicle says:
… All of this is intriguing if confusing. Much of it is vague on purpose, of course, but in the pilot there are so many flashbacks (23 days ago, 8 days ago, one nanosecond ago, etc.) that it becomes almost comical. And yet, it's mighty entertaining. The question you need to ask yourself is whether a serialized drama with loads of twists and turns - and no guarantee of success - is worth the investment of your time. There's always a need for a pulse-pounding mystery with a little paranormal thrown in. If "The Event" proves it can let out the story while reeling viewers back each week, it could be something special. …
The Washington Post says:
… a cynical grab for the orphaned fans of both "Lost" and "24," a hybrid drama incorporating threats to national security and a minority president by a group of terrorists (a la "24") and supernatural episodes of dislocation and unexplained phenomena (a la "Lost"). The come-ons are everywhere in this show, from the vaguely Oceanic color scheme on the doomed airliner to the very CTU-like font choice in the title cards, which tell you the names of characters and what day and hour this is. You'll need those title cards. … I, for one, have decided I can't do anything about preventing the event, nor will I help plan for the event or worry about the event; I have something else scheduled. So do let me know how the event went. …
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says:
… a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat pilot episode that raises many questions and is likely to leave viewers eager to learn more. …
HitFix says:
… The pilot is a lot of flash and no substance. It wants me to want to find out what the event is, but I don't care, and I imagine within a week or three, neither will most of the audience. …
The Boston Herald says:
… the most intriguing new fall drama … Will “The Event” turn out to be another “FlashForward” or the next “Lost”? I’m betting cautiously on the latter.
The Boston Globe says:
… The creator of the show, Nick Wauters, has done his mythology-series homework, and now he’s taking his skills public with the hope of delivering the “Lost,’’ “24,’’ or “X-Files’’ of the 2010s. Hijacked plane? Check. Coverup involving the president and CIA? Check. Big Secret that could change the fate of mankind forever? Check. Zeljko Ivanek? Check. Well-drawn human characters? Um, oops. … I’m going to watch next week, in hopes of finding an answer to tonight’s biggest cliffhanger: Can “The Event’’ turn out to be something more than just another mega-conspiracy wannabe?
The Hollywood Reporter says:
… As showrunner, Evan Katz, formerly of Fox's "24," knows a good deal about storytelling at breakneck speeds. In addition, executive producer Jeffrey Reiner, who directed the pilot, barely lets you catch your breath. However, unless they reward viewer trust with a few satisfying answers -- and soon -- "Event" will see a sharp decline in RSVPs. So far, the most enjoyable part of this dizzy ride is the brilliant cast. Underwood and Ritter are entirely convincing in complicated roles. Equally impressive is the work of Innes as the tightly wound conspirator and Zeljko Ivanek as the president's straight-talking aide. …
Variety says:
… does a nifty job of raising suspicions -- and introducing a diverse cast of characters, from an extremely unlucky vacationer to the president of the United States. NBC's stab at a big, serialized "Lost"-like premise gets off to an enticing start …

The commercials look awful. Lost was the only thing, aside from sports, that I watched on network TV. Nothing yet has replaced it or looks to replace it. Same with 24 (although that last season pretty much sucked).

    by frankenberry

The problem with shows like these is that the first season may be great - but ultimately, it will tell us nothing. We'll have to keep waiting until later seasons to find the answers - but by then, the later seasons may have jumped the shark and won't be worth watching. I don't know. Maybe I'll just wait until the series ends and rent the Blu-rays, if word is that the show stayed strong its entire run.

    HoboCode, re: Persons Unknown

    by jim

That wouldn't have been so bad if NBC hadn't advertised it as a "mini-series" and claimed that "by the end of Summer, all will be known". I would have been happy with how it ended had NBC been honest about it. However, I guess advertising a show as "a 13 episode story arc that was created with every intention of becoming an ongoing series but one we won't be picking up unless the ratings are uber-phenomenal" is less catchy. Plus, it didn't help that the creator said he envisioned the show as an ongoing series, but made it so if NBC didn't pick it up it would stand on its own as a complete series and wouldn't contain teases and unanswered questions. I wonder what show he was watching.<p>And, seriously, what the hell was up with Robert Picardo's "hair"?

Yes, I know everyone HATES the sideways universe and the supernatural ending of BSG was somewhat divisive. <br><br> That being said, with faults and all, LOST and BSG both had a certain "magic" to them that I still haven't found in any other show. I'll never forget those classic Desmond centric episodes, or Apollo finding Starbuck alive in her new Viper. <br><br>Yes, I do watch Mad Men, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, and Breaking Bad. And yes, the Boardwalk Empire pilot was good. But when LOST and BSG died, a part of television died with me. <br><br> I don't know what the Event is... but I hope it's a rekindling of the magic that was "The Constant" or "Through the Looking Glass" or "Resurrection Ship" or "Kobols Last Gleaming"...

by D_T a bummer, yeah, because there were certain elements that we're reasonably interesting, some of the characters were decent (all the female roles were fucking horrible, the wife agrees). ...but I agree 101% if the show at episode 6 was destined for a 13 EP mini series, get everything squared away. It got even more convoluted after the midway point, and then they started with plots out of the ether! Anyway, The Event (Stopping at a rest area and finding no toilet paper is not The Event), has me intrigued. Set the series on the DVR, I guess we'll see how it pans out.

Watch this promo: <p> <p>There's at least one shot in it from the final episode. I'd say the entire series was in the can before the first episode even aired. I suspect NBC was unwilling to throw any more money at the show to change the finale. <p><br>Here's a quote from an interview with Remy Aubuchon that Hercules linked to a few weeks ago (entire interview - ): <p>"Remi: I think that was in the discussions when NBC finally bought it and was trying to figure out how to distinguish it as an event. I’ll be honest, we did shoot it with the idea of it being an on-going series, but because I am insane when I get to the end of a season and they give you a big, giant cliff-hanger with no answers, I insisted that we provide all the answers to the questions that we set up, at the beginning. And then, what I hope will happen at the end is that there will be a big enough springboard that, if we chose to go for a second season, we would have one. But, there will be none of those maddening teases that we’re going to tell you the answers and then we don’t tell you the answers. That gave NBC the idea of making it a mini-series."<p>What a load of bullshit spin. Maybe I'm just being cynical, but by the time the show's first episode aired he was probably already done with it save for the interviews and the residual cheques.

    by Crow3711

At least not in my heart. But that doesn't mean I quit tv. There will be good shows and bad. But not a lost. And that's okay. <p> And D_T, that's what I mean. Clearly everyone in the show knows what the event is, but audience doesn't, so we can look forward to a few episodes of dialogue along the lines of "he's going to tell them about...the event". "but sir, he can't tell them about...the event. We have to stop him". They know, we don't, so they do nothing but speak in preposterous dialogue a la sections of lost S3. Maddening cycles of dialogue that goes nowhere. You can do that for an episode or two, but if it goes a whole season, or even half, where characters continuously speak in hushed vagueries about an earth shattering "event" I'm going to lose my mind.

Had a women where on one side she had black hair, other side blonde. Obviously deals with an alternate dimension in some way mucking with our own. Even the backwards E in EVENT gives it away. When dimensions collide!

Is the Event. Sorry that was a football reference. Anyway if this show is about other dimensions Fringe should sue instantly. I hope the Event is just something quite small and the problem is everyone's reaction to it. Does it even matter what pilots are on? We all know this: Football will beat everything. The Event won't have a second season. Lone Star will get dropped midway through it's first season(That is how Fox rolls). The only new show that will survive will be Chase, because cop shows always survive. Oh yeah and Hawaii Five-0 will get huge ratings because retards and old people watch CBS.

Is it wrong of me to say that? Sorry, it's just that I'm quite frankly sick of gimmicky shows like these and then NBC offended me by buyng adspace in all my comics that feature nothing but the most homosexual looking images of all the characters. Oh look, it's raining men! Do not want. "The Event!" Fucking please. How about, "The Originality!" Or, "The Quality Program!" Am I the only one that misses the days when a television program did not require you to follow it obsessively? Like, if you missed an episode of Northern Exposure, no big deal. It was all zany antics and character stuff, it's not like the main characters had some grand plot arch that needed to be kept track of via a checklist of obscure references. One and done, that was it. I did this whole must-follow-each-and-every-episode thing with Lost. Loved Lost, but after it ended that was it for me. Done, no more. I'm fucking sick of it now. Only show I find worth watching anymore is The Big Bang Theory.

Okay, I've only seen the ads and previews for this.

    by L.H.Puttgrass

So here is my 'guess' at the plot of the Event. The people held prisoner in Alaska are either aliens who just want to coexhist with us or humans who have crazy super-human abilities and just want to live normal lives. Of course the CIA can't let these guys loose. Just wandering around. They might do something and freak people out. What will the population do? Oh no! <p> So their exhistance can't be known. <p> The Event is probably their discovery. <p> I think the woman from ER stops the jet from crashing. In the previews it looks like she's staring it down like its some kind of stand off. <p> Anyway, that's my guess. Probably wrong. <p> GO SAINTS!! WHO DAT!!

One more rant--the reason this show sucked...

    by JackIsLost

It is one thing to build a show around mysteries...fine. But every character on the show knows a lot but all the lines are purposefully vague to keep the audience in the dark. It's a cheap trick, along with telling the story in non-chronological order...and no interesting characters to care about. "I haven't told you everything!" Um, you didn't tell us ANYTHING.

need something too. I'll take my chances with the show. Since Lost and 24 ended, I don't watch ANY shows on network TV. I miss having one story to follow every week, so I'll give this a shot. Maybe the event is Jack Bauer invaded purgatory and rescued the LOST cast.

  • Sept. 20, 2010, 9:52 p.m. CST

And before anyone brings up Supernatural...

by Shermdawg "rehashed shit", it at least had an interesting premise from the start despite the show not firing on all cylinders straight out the gate. All this talk about Lost

    by Miyamoto_Musashi

Miss it so much, I unlike a lot of others loved the final, the stuff on the island was absolutely perfect, I was completely guttered with the deaths and even enjoyed how the sideways/purgatory universe explored their and humaitys emotional issues. <p> Lost for me succeded primarily because it had amazing well written memorable characters, the mystery aspects hooked me in, but could have cared less over time if they weren't convincing characters. <p> Flash forward failed for me because it failed to deliver memorable characters that you really cared about. <p> Darlton got it about characters, Braga doesn't and not sure if he ever will. I also think Lost took the more easier route of setting up a show. That is establish a group of characters create a mystery and over time make the story bigger and bigger, but the audience will already know and care about the characters so you can stretch the story. Flash Forward has an event that impacted everyone and then tried to bring it back to establishing the characters. Stephen King is a master and can do that, Braga is not. <p> Think also Brian K Vaughn in the Y the Last Man Tv series did very well in taking this huge world changing event and then bringing it back to a core group of characters who we came to care about. I know there has been talk about Y the Last man being brought to the big screen, but frankly would be happier to see it on TV. <p>

    Concepts and execution

    by Miyamoto_Musashi

George Lucas gets a lot of criticism, some of it quite rightly but he did create an amazing universe that is and will be remembered for a long time to come. The guys has an amazing imagination, but with the prequels not really delivering to the level they should have, questions were asked. For me it really came down to Lucas having too many yes men around him, not hiring the right people for directing and writing jobs and listening to different opinions, hence execution of the storytelling process wasn't up to scratch. <p> I look at Heroes and think the same thing about Tim Kring, after season 1, was he really getting the input and advice he needed. I just read the novel which he jointly wrote, called "Shift", interesting and exciting premise, characters were largely quite interesting but some of the execution on how the scenes were written and even the flow between scenes seemed to be lacking, was really wondering was his co-author or editor really being critical enough, or were they thinking "well this guy made a tv show, he is the big shot, can't really question him" <p> David Goyer clearly needs some quality people (like the Nolans) involved or at the helm to do his best, when he is showrunning with the likes of Braga, concepts sound very interesting, but execution is lacking. <p>

    Its a FAIL for me

    by ArianeB

I think about sci-fi genre premier episodes I have seen in the past few years, not just the successful ones like Heroes, Lost, BSG, and Fringe, but also some of the lamer ones like Flash Forward, V, Dollhouse, and Moonlight, and The Event probably had the worst premiere episode of any genre series in recent memory.<p>When the most compelling character on the show was the Air Marshall, and when most of the episode I kept thinking how much the main character looked like Sam Merlotte on True Blood, and then wondering if Sam really killed his brother, and then when that actor who played the judge on True Blood showed up as the President's Aid I thought the show might start to get better, but then he was only on screen for a minute or two. Then I noticed the President was played by Blair Underwood, and then thought, "hey wow I just saw Jimmy Smits play a Supreme Court justice last week, those guys from LA Law are moving up in the world". <p>In other words, the show completely failed to keep me interested. The big reveal at episode end was horribly anti-climactic. I'm sure the vast majority of this board is thinking like me, "its probably aliens", and the truth is I don't really give a damn if I'm right or wrong.

What's wrong with you people? A bunch of hateful curmudgeons. I was very satisfied with Lost's finale. It answered the questions I wanted and the stuff that wasn't will have me taking about the show for years to come. It's like you guys go a restaurant have this wonderful meal, great severs - laughing and smiling as you eat. Then comes dessert and it's two Oreos. Now you bitch and moan about the whole meal sucking and never eating at that kind of establishment EVER again! So what if the dessert were two cookies. I had a great feast and an awesome time; sure I would've like some cake (who wouldn't), but I'm happy just the same. As for the pilot episode, I'm intrigued. I'll be watching next week. It was a lot better than Flash Forward. Anyhow, allegedly this is the Event... If it is - I'm okay with it, could another splendid meal.

    by smackfu

Was the Lost finale closing out the end of an amazing decade of TV. The next couple of years of TV are going to be abysmal, because everyone's trying so hard to create the next big thing to fill in all the voids the quality shows have left, there's no room for any natural creative process.

    by Miyamoto_Musashi

Would like to see some people inspired by the great shows at the moment, but not copying it, great stories will always be great stories, but as I said before you also know the right people involved. <p> If you look at Hollywood or broadcast tv, not a lot of orignality or people being inspired, its more like how do we copy this, how do I make a quick dollar. <p> I get the feeling, that a lot of this TV is brainstorming rather than a development of a great idea. i.e. "we need a show to capture the audience of Lost", "we need a show to capture the audience of 24", "how about we combine a show that does both....bonus please" <p> Hope to really surprised by broadcast TV but for me an enjoying Fringe, Supernatural is also always a lot of fun. <p> But Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Breaking Bad are on very different levels. <p> I look at the shows I mentioned and clearly the natural creative process is still happening on cable. They aren't all getting amazing viewing numbers but then again I don't think people watch these shows the same way as before, I know a lot of people who prefer to wait for the box set, or download from Amazon or the like <p>

    Flashforward Redux!

    by tailhook

So let me get this straight. A show is based around the premise that presumably... sometime in the First Season... there will be a big cataclysmic Event occuring. The only difference with this being is its kept intentionally vague and having to deal with obvious Humans-that-may-or-may-not-be-quite Human. Yes, this is basically Flashforward all over again from a different angle and the problems that plagued that show will almost certainly plague this one.

one of the worst new series this season on the big 3

    by ForgetfulPete

one of the best? so all i need to do is invent a conflict of some kind, set up an impossible situation, get out of it with magic powers in the worst deus ex machina sort of way, and herc loves it. no WONDER he loves what he loves! can you imagine if 24 ended with a magic ray gun fixing everything? can you imagine if it turned out lost only happened inside the head of everybody and there was no magical island? oh wait.

After LOST and BSG's pitiful endings...NEVER AGAIN!

    by Behemoth

Ne'er more shall I devote a precious hour of my life each week to stuff like this. Here's the template: First season = good, intriguing, interesting....Second season = a few answers given, a few new interesting characters ... Third season = a nagging suspicion that the writers are making it up as they go along at this point ... Remaining seasons to the finale = some crap twist that renders all emotional investment over the years meaningless. Regret sets in about wasted hours. <p>No, I'll wait this one out until post finale. If it's worth seeing, I'll Netflix the series and blow through it in a couple months, sans commercials. <p>The rest of you dopes, go eff yourselves and prepare to take a big one up the chute.

The episode seemed to me like an hour-long teaser

    by jim

It was more preview than premiere. At least I hope that's what it was. While I enjoyed the episode, found it very well paced, and am intrigued by what's going on, I can only be teased for so long. I'm not one who needs all answers right off the bat, but it is tiresome to watch a show where the majority of characters know more than the viewers, and constantly talk about it in a vague and cryptic way, without letting us in on it. <p>I'm thinking the question is a bit misleading. Not so much "what is the Event" but rather "what was the Event". I'm thinking it's something that happened a while ago, resulting in 97 (or whatever it was) "people", who aren't Americans, arriving in the US and being taken into custody. I also think there's more of them that are still out there and not chillin' in Alaska. By the way, anyone ever been to Alaska in the Winter? Would you really, even if only walking a short distance from a helicopter to a hangar, wear only an overcoat and scarf?

    Big Jim

    by SithMenace

Supposedly, and I stress supposedly, the next's week's episode will wrap up any questions from the previous week, that's what the show creator said. Of course, we all know how that turns out.<p>Questions that were posed this week that should be answered in the next ep...<p>Who is the woman at the facility and what does she know?<p>Who is the other group of people that forced the pilot to suicide bomb the plane, and what do they know?<p>What is the Event? (duh)<p>Who caused the portal to open?<p>Where are all of those people now?<p>And possibly the biggest question posed by this the hell did he get that gun on the plane?

I don't really get the people complaining about

    by SithMenace

network tv. Think back 60 years, and with a few exceptions, when has it ever really been great? All I can think of is the original Twilight Zone, X-Files, Lost (until the 6th season), Mash (even though I never got into it) and maybe a few miniseries like Roots and Lonesome Dove. There have been a few pretty great sitcoms, like Newhart, Cheers and Seinfeld, but there's nothing more from the history of network tv that really stands out for me. <p>In fact, cable has been doing the hourlong dramas better than network tv ever has, and occasionally with sitcoms like Curb Your Enthusiasm, so I don't understand where this huge bar has been set for everyone to be constantly disappointed.

SithMenace, I'd be happy with only (for now)

    by jim

finding out who, or what, the woman is (and her "people"), and what the Event is (or was). I assume they go hand-in-hand and would think one answers the other. <p>I think they did answer (sort of) how he got the gun on board. When he comes out of the can, they show some kind of outfit stuffed in the trash. Then when he sat down he said to the dude something like "can I sit here". I assume he snuck on wearing a flight crew or maintenance uniform so he could circumvent security and bring in the gun. Then he just sat wherever there was an empty seat.<p>When it ended I felt a bit cheated, like I'd been tricked. Perhaps the premiere was conceived as a 2 hour episode, and maybe if episodes 1 & 2 had been aired that way, rather than spread out over a week, I'd be more satisfied today. To me, the line "I haven't told you everything" had little impact. Partly due to having seen it in ads all Summer, but also because they really hadn't told us anything. So, even though, gasp, the President doesn't know everything, at episode's end, he still knows more than we do. Had we, the audience, known as much as the President, only to find out at the end that as much as we know, there's an even deeper mystery, that would have been a much more powerful ending. That would have given the final line "I haven't told you everything" the resonance I assume it was supposed to have.

  • Sept. 21, 2010, 12:58 p.m. CST

FlashForward's pilot way better than The Events'

    by wtriker1701

FF had a great pilot in the shadows of the exiting LOST. Too bad the exec's at ABC didn't want them to drag their answering questions season long. <br> So they gave answers too early, watered the experience down immsense after 6 episodes or so and didn't have the time to elaborate a bigger shape of things to come. FF lost poorly and became a sore bore. Hence 1 season only. <p> The Event's pilot wasn't as great as FF's pilot (down to the SFX), hints given very early, the "Thread" almost non-existent, placing the scale of "events" on a more personal less intriguing level than FF (The whole world was in danger there, for God's sake!). <p> So, I will give it a chance, but I'm afraid it's vanishing into thin air (pun's intended btw:) very soon. 13 to maaaybe 22 episodes at best. Sad! <p> No, there's no new LOST, no new X-Files, no new 24 to be seen at the horizon. Just some action filled, morale-questioning, soul-searching without real meat in it.

That makes more sense that he snuck on as an employee. <p>I agree about everything you said about the episode, but I'll watch next week to see just how forthcoming they are with the information. If it's an enjoyable show I can handle the slow release of information, but if it ends up that I'm watching just for the central mystery, I'm done.

It'll stick around for a while, go on hiatus with rumours of cancellation, come back next year in the off-sweeps months with rumours of getting a second season, then unceremoniously disappear off everyone's radar never to be heard from again. In the meantime, it'll suffer the ignominy of TBers everywhere, whenever the show gets a mention, asking, without a hint of irony or malice, "is this show still on?".

    by _Maltheus_

Hollywood needs to stop doing presidents. It's like a toddler describing what Daddy does for a living. I'm sick and tired of these do-good presidents just trying to do the right thing, surrounded by bad men. When has this ever been the case in any living person's lifetime? You can only rise to that level if you are already bought and paid for.<br /> <br /> What happened to the F16s shooting the plane down? know, I don't care. The Lost and BSG phenomenon is over and network TV is only just now catching up. It's the Breaking Bad and Madmen type shows that are where it's at. Give me quality and I don't care what the plot, twist or "event" is.

Yeah, a pilot no one saw. Try again.

  • Sept. 21, 2010, 2:47 p.m. CST

    Not bad. Just mediocre.

    by Steve Young

The pilot tried to cover too much ground, and was too ambitious with its (basically unnecessary) chronological leaps. The backwards chronology made it feel like the writers were afraid people would lose interest if they told their story in a more straightforward fashion. It's not a good sign. (And it's not like Lost, which had flashbacks firmly in the past and present... The Event was going back to thirteen days ago, eleven days ago, eight days ago, seven days ago... narrative whiplash!) <p> The networks seem afraid to release a pilot with a single narrative that focuses on just a character or two. They throw everything at the wall, hoping that something will stick with everyone in the audience: the 24 "do-gooder president and his scheming henchmen" story! The "generic family in trouble"! The love story! The secret military base! <p>By diluting your narrative out of fear your story won't hold the audience's interest, you risk turning the characters into chess pieces, like in FlashForward.

    Arbitrary time jumps

    by Bass Ackwards

Would have liked it better if it weren't trying so hard to ape Lost with the flashbacks. The difference is Lost at least went into the show with a structure to its flashbacks, it wasn't just randomly jumping around plot points for titillation. Like when they're all sitting in the room "please mr president, don't relase them" jump back 8 months "ok mr president, let's meet their leader" jump forward "its so nice to see you released!" The time jumping added nothing, same with the disappearing girlfriend. That said I'll still be tuning in for the next couple of episodes, but if the formula continues to be teases and flashbacks I'll lose interest pretty quickly.

Geez, just how many flashbacks will they have

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

It's like every five minutes. This show is for the ADD generation. Lost used flashbacks as a tool. This is a cheap immitation with potential, but it better improve. Oh yeah, and Hawaii Five O kicked its ass.

    The Event is......

    by DangerDave

97 time travelers come to the past to view the event(yet unknown). The pilot was blackmailed into trying the kill the president, by the CIA, so that the pres wouldn't reveil the travelers and the upcoming event. The travels transported the jet to another time. <P> The Event is....the fact that on TV we now have a black president from a communist nation (Cuba) in the White House. After Obama, this would never happen again.

So since you have seen 1.2 & 1.3 without revealing what it is do you know from those episodes what the Event is yet?

If the Event had Jack Bauer in it

    by jtp8000

He would have shot the tires off the plane, saved all the people , ripped down the door to the cockpit and grabbed Mike. As he is leaving he would turn to Ritter Jr and say "That is how it is done son. Now go back to school."

I'm confused about the President & Cuba

    by jim

Was he born there? Wouldn't that disqualify him from running for President? Or does the President live in a reality where Cuba is part of the US?

    by The Bicycle Sharer

I laughed so hard at that "RPLocke not hating" thing that I fucking cried, man! Well done.

  • Sept. 22, 2010, 2:57 p.m. CST

    Bass Ackwards, well said

    by The Bicycle Sharer

And exactly what **I** said in the first twenty minutes when we'd "jumped" like forty times. They need to tone that fucking shit down stat. It is HIGHLY fucking annoying. I don't mind a little bit of it, but that shit? Seriously, in the first ten minutes, I'm pretty sure that they did it five times. What story WOULDN'T be mysterious and shit like that? Bet I could film myself getting up, eating breakfast, and taking a shit, jumbling it around and it would seem all, "Oooh, what's going on here?" Not knocking "The Event" as I'll stick with this one for at least six eps or so (and, fuck, anybody that knocks Lost's ending at the critics' screening has already fucking won ME over).

    If the above wasn'

  • Sept. 22, 2010, 3 p.m. CST

    If the above wasn't clear...

    by The Bicycle Sharer

If memory serves, The Event's producers kinda slammed Lost a little bit at their screening of the pilot ep, saying that they have the first three seasons plotted out and that you've gotta have faith, but, "unlike some other shows that asked for that," they're telling the truth.

  • Sept. 22, 2010, 3:08 p.m. CST

I gotta go with NOT aliens, but time travelers

    by The Bicycle Sharer

Seriously, at this point, if they're going with aliens, what the fuck?!?!?? I mean, honest to God, everybody pretty much believes in 'em, everybody pretty much thinks that they're out there and that they'll be here someday (or we'll be there), and we've only seen about 3 billion movies and tv shows exploring this exact topic. What the fuck would be so earth shattering about that shit?<p>Time travelers, on the other hand, can tell you the future. Maybe specifically or maybe in very general terms. But, shit, just like Flash Forward, wouldn't that be way more fucked up than aliens? To know that event X was going to occur and that no one could stop it? No matter what?

  • Sept. 22, 2010, 3:11 p.m. CST

The Event could have been 24 season 8

    by RPLocke

How cool would that have been? Jack Bauer VS REAL time travel!!

  • Sept. 22, 2010, 3:11 p.m. CST

    by _Maltheus_

It's sad, but they should just recast the lead. Why should everyone else lose their job just to pay homage to Whitfields misfortune. No other business would do that.

  • Sept. 22, 2010, 4:05 p.m. CST

BTW- just liked the event overall...

    by jay2517

the only part i really liked was the pilot (and what happened to his family) part. thought that was pretty cool. juries still out on the rest...

  • Sept. 23, 2010, 12:13 a.m. CST

Yeah, the Pilot's family - tragic!

    by wtriker1701

And kind of surprising, too. First I thought they just were taken hostage... now I honestly don't know...

  • Sept. 23, 2010, 12:20 a.m. CST

    Have seen Hawaii 5-0 now...

    by wtriker1701

Cool update on the show, very hot Grace Park, I can say. I want children with her, starting asap! <p> Loved (Jin's) kind of "He doesn't understand The Island", was a nice touch.

  • Sept. 23, 2010, 5:56 p.m. CST

    by jay2517

looks like the kid(s) are taken hostage. that was fucking pretty brutal on the wife for a NBC show brotha...

  • Sept. 23, 2010, 11:25 p.m. CST

    Yeah, Jay...

    by wtriker1701

And I thought at first, his wife wouldn't have been harmed, since the first shot just hit the window. <p> There's definitely potential in The Event, but it hasn't unfolded, yet. That's where FlashForward showed gigantic values in the first 6 Episodes (especially the pilot). But I'm willing to stay with The Event, hoping for the best! <p> And damn the execs, if they waste another potential hit series early!

  • Sept. 24, 2010, 1:05 a.m. CST

Hey man don't touch all those buttons...<br><br><br />and<br><br><br />It's because SciFi (and kick ass cars) is what you love, Jay. Its who you were born to be. And here you sit, thinking. Well, Jay is not a thinker. Jay is a driver. He is a doer. And that's what you need to do. You don't need to think. You need to drive. You need the speed. You need to git out there, and you need to rev your engine. You need to fire it up. You need to grab a hold of that line between speed and chaos, and you need to wrestle it to the ground like a demon cobra!<br><br> And then, when the fear rises up in your use it. And you know that fear is powerful, because it has been there for trillions of years.<br><br> And it is good. And you use it. And you ride it; you ride it like a skeleton horse through the gates of hell, and then you win, Jay. You WIN! And you don't win for anybody else. You win for you, you know why?
