JOJO is also giving away free music

    by TheKiller7

Remember Jojo? The Lindsay Lohan look-a-like?..... Prince did it too.... Everyone is giving away their music!

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:31 a.m. CST

Thank God for junk e-mail addresses!

    by Tall_Boy66

You make me sign up for spam, I send you to my junk mail address that I only use to sign up for sites and then never check. Everyone's a winner!

Yeah "Smashing Pumpkins" are giving away their music too

    by Tall_Boy66

By "Smashing Pumpkins" I mean "The Solo Billy Corgan Group" and he releases one track a month online. But there has been long, multi-month waits between tracks, so it's not really a full month. But no signing up for e-mail. Still, free tunes are free tunes. Legally, this time. Which is fun for a lark.

Prince gave away an entire album

    by RPLocke

Even Prince knows everyone hates his stuff now.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 2:12 a.m. CST

@prince, trent has given away 3 full albums and 2 partials now

    by mrfantomashawk

Year Zero was put up for a week before its release on NIN.com then half of Ghosts, then the full album of The Slip, then his new project How To Destory Angels, and now these 5. He also released 404 gigs of HD concert footage for free for fans to make their own dvd's

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 2:23 a.m. CST

    It works.

    by gotilk

I'm buying the blu-ray 5.1 version. That should sound pretty impressive uncompressed. After years of listening to squashed, limited, compressed music, your ears almost go into shock when they hear something uncompressed after so long. Try it sometime. MP3s are mostly crap sounding. Some people release great quality mp3s(320kbps), but they are fairly rare. And sometimes artists actually take a compressed file and "convert" to 320 thinking it will sound better, as stupid as that sounds. But it happens. I've had a few discussions. It's not pretty. You would think a band promoting an album would want potential fans to hear the highest quality possible. But even to this day, paranoia and misunderstanding still wins from time to time. I'm happy to see a resurgence of interest in vinyl, even with its scratches and pops and the expense of the equipment. But it will still forever be a niche market.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 2:26 a.m. CST

I agree. Ipods have the shittiest sound

    by RPLocke

Yeah, digital is cool, but most albums are so damn quiet, you have to CRANK the volume up to hear them.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 2:27 a.m. CST

and Prince has fallen off the back of the sanity truck

    by gotilk

and is still rolling behind it. The Internet "fills his head with numbers, and that can't be a good thing". Ooh boy. Sad, really. I never expected him to be the one last hold-out. Hell, I expected him to innovate. But have you heard his new stuff in the last several years? He's regressed. Not good stuff.

Pumpkins gave away an album in 2000

    by Tall_Boy66

Before it was cool. "MACHINA II: THE FRIENDS AND ENEMIES OF MODERN MUSIC" Basically they had enough for another double album for Machina, only released a single, gave away the rest for free sourced from vinyl records they gave away to friends and a select few superfans. So legal free shit is a good thing. Raidohead's In Rainbows was either a freebe or one cent, but I just got the torrent.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 3:48 a.m. CST

Prince actually made a profit w/Free CD

    by TheKiller7

Prince was reportedly paid $500,000 over and above the royalties for each CD — typically around 10%. Considering that his last album, 3121, sold only 80,000 copies in the U.K., this deal may have earned him more than eight times as much.... . Planet Earth — which has gotten fairly good reviews so far — is now in the hands of thousands of people who may never have thought to buy it. Maybe they like what they hear ... and maybe they want more. They'll have to settle for buying up his back catalog, because the 21 shows he's playing in London in August and September are already sold out. Naturally, he's giving away a copy of the album with every ticket . Read more: http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1644427,00.html#ixzz0zrwdI1yz

First off, this isn't a "score"

    by MelGibsonsRacialTirade

This is crappy eletronic soundtrack music. A score is a score. It's large pages of music which has all of the orchestra's parts laid out so that the conductor know what's up.....these mamalukes wouldnt know how to read or write a score. All they do is sit in front of synthesizers and bang on keys until annoying noises come out.

ABE VIGODA LAUGHS AT YOU ALL!

    by Rocco Curioso

Rumor has it he is a close personal consigliere to both Prince and Trent Reznor, which explains many (though not all) of life's musical mysteries.

and they had this newer Prince TRIPLE album on sale for 1.99. 1.99! They had at least 30 of them and in a town of about 50,000 people. Not sure who they thought was going to buy them. I realize that all CD sales are anemic but it made me laugh. I wonder what that comes out per song on a triple album?

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 7:45 a.m. CST

Why exactly are we talking about Prince?

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

lol Prince is, and always WAS... pure garbage. <P> Seriously though, you'd have to be a 13 year old girl to enjoy his music. And for that matter, pretty much everything from the '80's was crap as well. What an awful, AWFUL, decade for music... <P> Bleh.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 8:17 a.m. CST

I will sort of answer the call Dead Flag Blues...

    by jjwalrus

the 80's, like any decade had it's high and low points. You could either find new wave synth music and hair metal as either sublime and fun or extremely repugnant depending on your point of view. I find the 80's to be fun, but I absolutely see why some people don't. I don't see the 80's as a truly great decade for music though. The 60's were the best and most groundbreaking.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 8:23 a.m. CST

No, I'd like the spooky choir song from the trailer

    by CreasyBear

but i-Tunes doesn't carry it, that Scala and Kolacny cover. Also would've paid my dollar for the ominous Inception trailer music that wasn't even in the album, but i-Tunes didn't want my money for that one, either. YOU JUST MISSED OUT ON TWO DOLLARS, I-TUNES!

    FROSTWIRE, i should have said...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Not Limewire... <P> What is this, 2007?? lol

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 8:32 a.m. CST

    jjwalrus... well said...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

You can put me in the "repugnant" camp ;-) <P> And i emphatically agree with you on the 60's being "the best and most groundbreaking"... <P> Absolutely.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 8:37 a.m. CST

    Ahhhhhh, the 60's...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

The Motherfuckin' BEATLES! The Rolling Stones, The Animals, Donovan, Jefferson Airplane, The Moody Blues, The Mamas and the Papas, Mama Cass, The Hollies, etc... <P> The 70's were pretty awesome too though: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, some GREAT latter Beatles stuff, and fucking ABBA! Hell yeah.

I'll bite. <p> The Smiths, R.E.M., Nirvana, Guns & Roses, The Pixies, Metallica, and more but I'm getting bored. <p> Those bands formed in the 80's. Bands that IMO put out their best material in the 80's... <p> AC/DC, RUSH, Genesis, Van Halen, and more but again...

Zeppelin formed in the 60's and released albums but, yes, they reached theit peak in the 70's. <p> Physical Graffiti is easily one of the greatest albums ever made.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 8:48 a.m. CST

But honestly, i would have to put the 90's as 2nd best...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Maybe 'cause i was born in '82... but don't discount the fuckin 90's! <P> The Prodigy (Liam Howlett), Orbital, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Muse, Radiohead, Adiemus, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Amon Tobin, Mike Patton, Jim Thirlwell (aka Foetus), Nine Inch Nails, Primus, etc...

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 8:49 a.m. CST

Yeah, as i was posting that last one...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

I remembered METALLICA being the one 80's band that i loved... that's about it lol

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 8:53 a.m. CST

Heck the 00's even had some good stuff...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Some more great stuff from: Amon Tobin, Mike Patton, Jim Thirlwell (aka Foetus), Godspeed You Black Emperor, etc... and introduced: V.A.S.T., Avenged Sevenfold, Rob Dougan, Teargas and Plateglass, The Arcade Fire, Nicole Atkins, System of a Down, Dimmu Borgir (Late 90's/early 00's...) <P> Not too shabby...

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 8:55 a.m. CST

Oh shit... how could i forget NIRVANA in the 90's!?

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

    Fuckin' CLASSIC.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 9:04 a.m. CST

    Yeah Sailor Rip...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

I only really liked 2 of those bands you listed: Nirvana and Metallica. <P> But wouldn't you classify Nirvana as 90's? "Nevermind" was released in '91, and that album featured their most classic work... The one released at the end of '88 wasn't nearly as good. <P> Oh and The Offspring was another 90's band i liked... as was The Bloodhound Gang. Kind of a "guilty pleasure"... ;-)

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 9:06 a.m. CST

Shit... Honestly, the 90's give the 60's a run for its money...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

    It does.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 9:11 a.m. CST

Seriously though, the 80's was DOMINATED by...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Pop and Hip-Hop. <P> The absolute 2 WORST GENRES OF MUSIC OF ALL TIME. <P> Ugh...

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 9:14 a.m. CST

The only good thing about the 80's was...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

FILM. The music, the style of clothing, etc. was TERRIBLE... But some of the most classic films were released in the 80's, for sure.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 9:19 a.m. CST

why isn't anyone talking about the actual subject of the post?

    by nuprin

Thanks, Scorekeeper. These tracks have a really nuanced atmosphere...and they remind me a lot of what John Carpenter would do now if he had better equipment (and more talent). So, ya, I'm super fuckin jazzed about this being put to Fincher storytelling and visuals.

Dead_Flag_Blues - The guy that rips on Prince

    by TheKiller7

Has terrible taste in music. That's 90's & 2K's lists this guy posted here are full of craptacular bands and "musicians". Many that have never been heard of outside of their immediate families and circle of friends. And BTW, Prince was talked about here not because we think he's a good artist. I don't give a fuck about him. He was mentioned because the topic was about music artist that give away music FOR FREE. And he’s a perfect example of that. Try to keep up, dude.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 9:26 a.m. CST

    LMAO @ Teabaggerharry...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Don't confuse your own IGNORANCE, and lack of MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE, with my "shitty taste" in music... You just admitted that you haven't heard of practically ANY of the artists i mentioned... lol <P> So how about, instead of acting like a complete DOUCHE who wouldn't know a talented musician if it came up and bit him on the ass... you shut your mouth, go run off to your room and crank up that awesome PRINCE ALBUM you got on standby! <P> You mindless simpleton you...

Anybody born in the 80's cannot judge the 80's

    by TheKiller7

Think about it, by the end of the decade they were at the most 10 years old. How the fuck can they judge a decade where they spend most of it wearing a damn diaper? They should stick to gushing over the 90's & 2K decades recycling the previous two decades music and movies.

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

i.e. the BEST DECADE OF MUSIC. lol dumbass... i wasn't even ALIVE in the 60's, yet i can appreciate it's genius. How is that? Hhhhmmmm..... <P> On the other hand... i can CRITICALLY JUDGE the 80's much the same way. Pop and Hip-Hop. Utter shallow, vapid, fluff. Simplistic, cheesy, goofball, mindless, generic, gimmicky TRASH. <P> That's the 80's in a nutshell ;-)

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 9:36 a.m. CST

Dead_Flag_Blues= Diaper boy that cannot judge the 80's

    by TheKiller7

You were born in 1982, dude. Think about it... You don't know shit about that decade. You were too busy growing a spinal cord to even notice what kind of music or movies were being made at the time. So how can you even dare to discuss that decade with people that LIVED it? You can't. Keep listening to fucking Canadian music. Gwahhahahah! That shit sucks.

INXS?? and the "genius" known as PRINCE?!? <P> LMFAO You sound like you should host the VH-1 "best of the 80's" compilation show... My god man. Nearly all those groups are as souless and vapid as most of the shit that plagues the air waves these days lol You just rattled off the Billboard top 100 shit from the 80's my friend... the uneducated masses ate that shit up, for sure... but look at the current top 100. <P> It's no different man... not one bit.

    "naming"

    by Sailor Rip

Are we still correcting grammar and spelling mistakes here or are we through with that. I vote we don't correct them anymore. If we all agree to that then no one can attack our posts for these issues, just our stupid opinions.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 9:53 a.m. CST

Metal was kinda big in the 80s, folks.

Dead_Flag_Blues - Face it diaper-boy, you know shit

    by TheKiller7

All you know about the 60's 70's and 80's is basically tablescraps. It's what you read, heard about second-hand. That is, you didn't lived those decades and are not in a position to tell anyone THAT DID that the music from those eras sucked. I don't go crapping all over music from eras where I wasn't even alive. I might not like some of that 60's music. But I won't bash it either. And don't be asking for respect when you don't give it. A-hole.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 9:54 a.m. CST

Shit... take a crack at the 00's i listed as well:

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

V.A.S.T. (First album), Avenged Sevenfold (City of Evil), Rob Dougan (Furious Angels), Teargas and Plateglass, The Arcade Fire, Nicole Atkins, System of a Down, Dimmu Borgir... <P> C'mon Teabagger, prove your ignorance to everyone! :-)

C'mon man. Though not formed in the 80's you can't deny The Police, Rush, Genesis, are not good bands. You may not like them but you can't deny their talent and impact on other artists(many of the artists you like would list them as influences). <p> I don't really like The Beetles but I won't say they're a band band or deny their influence. I will say Ringo is a fucking terrible drummer.

"I might not like some of that 60's music. But I won't bash it either." You can't "bash" it, 'cause there ain't NOTHING TO BASH. Incredible decade for music. And no, i don't have to have fucking LIVED in the 60's to know that! lol How stupid is that? So i can't enjoy ANTYTHING pre-1982?!? WTF man? That's so illogical, i don't even know where to start...

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 9:59 a.m. CST

LOL Dead_Flag_Blues is really butt hurt on TALKBACK

    by TheKiller7

Trying to save some face, diaper boy? I just told your ass you know shit. You made a serious mistake saying you were born in 82. Because you can only really judge the 90's and any shit that came after said decade. Anything before that decade, you need to shut you'r fucking pie-hole and let the adults that lived the 60's, 70's and 80's tell you how things actually went down, ok? Just shut the fuck up and quit trying to pretend you know anything about those years.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:01 a.m. CST

    I got to say...

...the idea that you can't appreciate music from a certain era because you weren't born yet or were a wee lad is fucking pure stupidity.

    NEWSFLASH!!

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Anyone... at ANY TIME... can critique an era of the past, or present. If you judge it OBJECTIVELY, you can speak about anything, whether you were alive during the time, or not. You cannot argue that Teabag. I can Praise and CRITIQUE equally... and according to my CRITICAL EAR, i deem the 80's music as CRAP. <P> 'Nuff said?

    Sailor...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

I really can't accept those bands you just listed as "quality" products... Why is it that, the only times you ever hear those "power ballads" from the 80's like Rush, The Police, "Eye of the Tiger" and shit... it's always done in a MOCKING TONE now?? How do you explain that? It's always a source of comedy. Like, i'm the biggest KISS fan! Or i love Rush!! Asia is the shit!!! <P> lol <P> It's 'cause that type of music... that GENRE is just inherently GOOFY. It's BAD MUSIC. You don't see people in comedies these days professing their love for Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin... why? 'Cause those are fucking quality artists! You seein' my point yet man?

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:09 a.m. CST

Sailor Rip - you need to learn how to read

    by TheKiller7

I've been telling Diaper-Boy here that anyone that could not enjoy a particular decade (either because they were too damn young or because they were born after said decade) has no right to tell people that actually LIVED those particular decades IN FULL that the music from their era sucked or not. Because only someone that LIVED those times can speak with AUTORITHY in regards to that. Capishe?

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:12 a.m. CST

    lmao @ teabagged...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Did you not read Sailor Rip's remark about your dumbass comment that you made? Or your "philosophy", i should say... Dude, don't even TRY to pretend that you're even older than i am lol You're clearly in high school, maybe college, at BEST. Your manner, attitude, irrationality make it obvious that you are a "wee lad"... So don't even try to tell me otherwise. You do NOTHING to support your opinion. You simply hurl juvenile, and aggressive personal attacks... you got nothin' else fool.

lol If you say so, captain...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

I didn't hurl names or insults at ANYONE, dickwad. I said the 80's, musically, was terrible. That's it. I then backed it up. People like YOU got all butt-hurt about it, and took it personal... Then went on a tirade like a raving lunatic. <P> Grow some balls, then go back and re-read this whole talkback, would ya pal?

I don't give a fuck about him. He was mentioned because the topic was about music artist that give away music FOR FREE. And he’s a perfect example of that. • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:30 a.m. CST

    Dead_Flag_Blues. It's OK...you don't know any better

    by Mr.Stiggs

I notice that you chose to pick only the most generic "pop" artists from my list yet ignored some of the more innovative bands such as The Clash, The Pixies, Sonic Youth or The Violent Femmes. I assume this is because you have very limited musical knowledge and a closed mind (System of a Down...Prodigy...are you kidding me?) The list that I posted is very broad and does not completely reflect my personal preference yet I can appreciate the contributions that each band brought to the genre. My musical tastes have always been quite diverse...from The Beach Boys and The Beatles to The Flaming Lips and Radiohead. I can find something great in each decade that will appeal to my sensibilities. But I can sort of see where TeabaggerHarry is coming from when he said the one needs to grow up in a certain decade to truly appreciate it's music. I understand that one can appreciate the music of a much earlier decade (the 60s and early 70s were phenomenal) but it's much different to have experienced it first hand. Don't you agree that the music (especially the protest/political songs) of the 1960s probably meant much more to the youth of that decade than it does to you? The 1980s has that same effect on me. It was an exciting time for music aficionados who tired of the bland American Top 40. The stale stale county/hard rock trappings were displaced with new and exciting genres like punk, rap, and the 2nd British invasion (new wave). You have no idea what is was like to have heard something fresh and “experimental” from The Smiths or The Clash after being subjected to aural torture from bands like The Starland Vocal Band (“Afternoon Delight”). I know that it's hard to imagine but there was a time when people would gather around the TV to see a new band play its first single on MTV! The 80s were dominated by Pop artists (what decade isn't) but there were some absolute gems if you knew were too look. I will admit that the latter half of the 80s produced some terrible bands but nothing compared to the 90s (commonly known as the worst decade for music with 00s a close second).

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:31 a.m. CST

    "Second hand experience"???

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

WTF? lol Okaaaay... Did you miss both my own, and Sailor Rip's BEATDOWN of that logical fallacy you already presented us with? It DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER. <P> Get it yet?

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:32 a.m. CST

    And for the record...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

I was already 8 YEARS OLD by the time the 80's ended. And i have some very FOND memories of that decade... so you're telling me that my opinion doesn't "count"? lmao <P> Ok boss, so when does it count? At what age do you have to be during a decade to be able to "speak on it". Hhhhmmmm??

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:36 a.m. CST

    D_F_B: "lol you moron..."

    by TheKiller7

I didn't attack YOU. Just your taste in music..... But being the pansy emo that you are... you took that personally. Oooh but wait! How come you're allowed to attack other people's taste in music and not anyone else?. Like what you previously said about those that dig Prince. Here's what you said: "lol Prince is, and always WAS... pure garbage. Seriously though, you'd have to be a 13 year old girl to enjoy his music. And for that matter, pretty much everything from the '80's was crap as well. What an awful, AWFUL, decade for music... Bleh".... So Diaper-boy, hypocrisy much?

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:38 a.m. CST

    Mr Stiggs... nice try ;-)

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

But did you just say "The Prodigy... are you kidding me?" lmao You have no idea what you're talking about bud. You probably don't even know what era of The Prodigy i speak of. Your probably thinking of their newer shit like "smack my bitch up" or "That Kick-Ass trailer song" blah blah blah... If you say that their first 2 albums: "Experience" and "Music for the Jilted Generation" are anything but masterpieces... than frankly, you don't know SHIT lol. <P> Liam Howlett was a fucking PIONEER. They were too "Electronica" or "Techno" (Ugh... i hate using that term) as the fucking Beatles were to Rock and Roll. <P> Try to keep up man...

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:41 a.m. CST

    Mr.Stiggs, I agree

    by TheKiller7

The 90's basically recycled (badly) a lot of the stuff that came during the previous 3 decades. You saw that everywhere in that decade. I remember that one of the first songs to sample earlier stuff was Vanilla Ice's Ice-Ice Baby. That song pretty much defined the decade as living off what came before.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:41 a.m. CST

    Mr. Stiggs continued...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

"you have very limited musical knowledge and a closed mind" Holy shit. Are you freakin' serious? That's hilarious man... I'm the one with limited musical knowledge? Do you even know who Thirlwell, Patton, Godspeed, Amon Tobin, Orbital, Adieumus, or Rob Dougan are?? Yeah, probably not lol All the shit i listed from the 60's and 70's... and you still claim that? lol Fuck off with that noise...

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:43 a.m. CST

Nope. Not hypocrisy at all :-)

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

I posted a FACT about an era/genre of music (and a particularly shitty artist...) and YOU got butthurt. Calling ME out personally... See the difference yet?

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:47 a.m. CST

    Mr. Stiggs...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

You say the 90's was the worst because you don't know any of the quality artists. You already admitted that. You don't know HALF of the artists i mentioned from the 90's... So how can YOU speak of that decade, when you clearly haven't investigated enough of it? Hhhhmmmm.... <P> Well i can safely say that my taste in music is far BROADER than your own. My likes and interests span different genres, different eras... and yours appear to be fairly similar, in terms of style of music. Like they fit, nice and snug, in a little box. <P> Sucks to be you ;-)

    by TheKiller7

You can't copy and paste shit you read about the 60's and 70's and try to sell that as actual experience with those decades. Less so with people that LIVED in any of those years and who know better. Who saw FIRST-HAND how music evolved. Anyway... Keep smoking that pipe.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 10:50 a.m. CST

    D_F_B copied and pasted: "knuckle-dragging"

    by TheKiller7

You're so addicted to the whole copy and paste thing, that you actually took that insult I branded you with, from me as well. WOW. Yep. Keep pretending you have any authority about the 60's, 70's and 80's. You seem to think that naming largely unknown and obscure bands and musicians makes up for your lack of first-hand experience with those eras. Delusional hipster all right. I hope you're really not an adult. It would be too embarrassing if true.

    Or could it be...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

That you're an insecure DOUCHE... who gets all pee-pee hurt by the fact that i name drop some artists that you've never heard of... and you ASSUME that i'm some "hipster jagoff" who just names "obscure" artists to make me feel better about myself, due to your ignorance and lack of musical knowledge?? lol <P> Is THAT a little more accurate?? <P> Yup, i think so... ;-)

    by TheKiller7

...would foolishly drag into a discussion about POPULAR MUSIC. I mean, you're some piece of work if you think you can get any credibility bringing out some obscure bands and musicians into the table like that. Especially when the discussion is all about music that had a mark on a particular decade. Obscure music doesn't live a mark precisely because it rides below the radar of most ppl. Do you get it now, diaper-boy? Do you get why you should not bring up obscure bands and musicians when adults are talking about POPULAR/MAINSTREAM MUSIC? Sheesh! What a slope-head.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 11:14 a.m. CST

LOL Diaper-boy returns with emo bands....

    by TheKiller7

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 11:29 a.m. CST

You're hilarious. And definitely NOT a teenager...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

No fucking way... lol I'm a "fucking piece of faggotery". Really? Wow, that's mature. Is that what you start calling people that are clarly more articulate and intelligent than you?? Nice...

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 11:31 a.m. CST

This dimwit has no reading comprehension skills whatsoever lol

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

He STILL hasn't obliged me, in naming, SPECIFICALLY which artists i listed as "obscure"... And he just called them "emo" lmao Fucking CLASSIC.

    Dead_Flag_Blues needs Talkbackers for support!

    by TheKiller7

Poor bastard. He just admitted that he cannot stand by himself. He needs a mob to backup anything he says. What a spinless pansy! Diaper-boy is now afraid of me! GAH-HAHAHAHAAHHA!

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 11:32 a.m. CST

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 11:35 a.m. CST

I'll assume that ALL of the artists that i listed...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

are what you would define as "obscure"... because of the lack of a response. Which makes you, in fact, the DUMBEST PERSON ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET. <P> Congratulations?

Dead_Flag_Blues: "HELP! I'm getting PWNED here!"

    by TheKiller7

LOL You're pathetic. You're like that sissy kid that gets beat-up and then says" Just wait till my big brother comes home...SNIFF!... He'll show you!". Fucking crying bitch. Cannot stand on it's own two legs. And here he was trying to convince me that he was the adult one. The one with authority. The one that acts and talks like an adult. The one that doesn't write any insults or flames other users that have a different opinion. All of that went to fuck as soon as he admitted that he needs HELP! HAHAHAHAHA!

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 11:37 a.m. CST

Dead_Flag_Blues. Don't say "Im out" unless you mean it

    by Mr.Stiggs

Quotes from Dead_Flag_Blues.<p> “I've been praised by my taste in music countless times”. “I also know far more about classical music, and film scores than you ever will”. “ You don't know half the artists I mentioned”. “I'm an ADULT...let the adults speak”.<p> You are really trying (unsuccessfully) to convince people people that you are some type of elevated musical connoisseur. I wonder why...it come off as desperately transparent? <p> BTW, adults generally don't use terms like “butt hurt”.<p> You also negated any type of argument that you had when you admitted you like The Offspring.

    by TheKiller7

I wasted my damn time with this loon. The Offspring? The ones that like 2 rip-off the Beatles? Seriously? FUCK THAT SHIT.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 11:45 a.m. CST

    Sorry Stiggs...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

but i'm obviously "some type of elevated musical connoisseur", at least, compared to yourself... I've already proven that myself here, as you haven't countered a SINGLE point that i made. Unless you count that juvenile shit that you just did about the Offspring. <P> A band that i don't listen to anymore, first of all (i liked a couple of songs from the early 90's when i was a teenager)... i was listing "influential" bands from the 90's. That was the last one i listed... so nice try bud. Pick on them all you want for all i care. And it's definitely not any sillier than you liking Prince, Madonna, or David fucking Bowie lol I could use that same anti-logic back at you. <P> "Oh, well since you like "so and so artist" your opinion can be rendered moot." <P> You see how fucking STUPID that is?

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 11:47 a.m. CST

And when did i ask anyone else for "help"??

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

It's funny how you 2 clowns keep referring to the offspring...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

When i haven't even listed it in my Best of 90's that i've reposted like 8 times here, in trying to get a mature response from Teabagged lol weird... Here's the list, ONCE AGAIN: <P> "The Prodigy (Liam Howlett), Orbital, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Muse, Radiohead, Adiemus, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Amon Tobin, Mike Patton, Jim Thirlwell (aka Foetus), Nine Inch Nails, Primus, Nirvana, etc." <P> Try again, asshole ;-)

"I wasted my damn time with this loon. The Offspring? The ones that like 2 rip-off the Beatles? Seriously? FUCK THAT SHIT." <P> Dude, that was INCOMPREHENSIBLE... and you used "loon", which is what i called you earlier. Did you "copy and paste" that yourself?

    Mr Stiggs...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Since you're the slightly more "sensible" of the 2 here... How have i been "desperately transparent"? You can use all the empty rhetoric you want, but it still doesn't change the fact that you haven't responded to a single one of my points. Namely, showing how ANY of those artists i listed are in any way, "bad". That juvenile, and irrelevant remark about the offspring is the best you got? <P> Yup, that's what i thought. And for the record... yes, i'm most certainly sure that i have a broader knowledge about classical music, and film scores than you do. Call it a "hunch" ;-)

  • Sept. 18, 2010, noon CST

    ChocolateJesusMan - SEGA was alright

  • Sept. 18, 2010, noon CST

And yes, that DOES, in fact, give my "opinion" on music...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

a little more weight. A deeper understanding of music theory/history and whatnot, is going to give you a more profound appreciation for gifted artists and musicians. Deny it all you want bud, but it's a fucking fact...

Dead_Flag_Blues. Open your eyes (or ears)

    by Mr.Stiggs

I know that this is a contrived statement but “The Offspring is a litmus test for people with bad musical taste”. Try it people...it really works. Kidding...not really<p> I was a regional manager for a large entertainment distribution corporation (Trans World) for about 12 years in the late 80s to 90s. I was responsible for purchasing recorded material (Records...yes, actual vinyl and CDs as they were later introduced) for much of the East Coast. In that time I amassed a great amount of musical knowledge and first hand introductions to many of the popular artists of the period (the job had it's perks...backstage passes, private concerts). I was exposed to a lot of musical genres that I probably would not have found on my own. I'm very grateful that I had that opportunity to expand my musical horizons. To this day I literally have thousands of “promo” CDs in boxes that I still haven't got through (but I'm making my way).<p> I'm sure that there are plenty of folks that know more about music than I but I have I never met anyone that is as steeped into the genre as I in my daily acquaintances. That said, I would never think that I was insightful enough dismiss an entire decade of music. That behavior just shows your ignorance and partiality to a paltry and specific range of music.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:11 p.m. CST

ToeJam and Earl was the shit, too.

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

And i think we should end the music "debate" at this point, since we're clearly not advancing anywhere lol <P> The 2 ignorant trolls can revel in their own stupidity, and leave the REAL music for the rest of us ;-) <P> Enjoy your best of the 80's Cd's you guys! Crank that Paula Abdul, New Kids on the BLock, Cyndi Lauper, and Prince! <P> Fantastic music right there guys, no question about it!

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:14 p.m. CST

Hey, Offspring's earlier shit is in no way emo

    by Tall_Boy66

Go listen to Smash again, there's a reason it became one of the biggest selling independent records of all time. Also, "Bad Habit" is a song that's dark and funny. The "something's odd, feel like I'm God" bit is gold. And then Offspring became sort of a pop-punk band and, y'know, whatever, but Smash = Gold. You know what's one of the other highest sellling indie releases of all time? Smashing Pumpkins "Gish". So that's pretty august company.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:14 p.m. CST

    Actually Teabagged... it wasn't I...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

who was reduced to a blubbering, retard, shouting profanities and whatnot. I was calm, cool, and collected the whole time. While you posted inane, poorly written diatribes... It's pretty clear to anyone who reads this disaster of a talkback lol <P> So i'm not worried. But you go on believing that, if it helps you sleep better at night ;-)

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:15 p.m. CST

    Ha. Thanks Tall boy ;-)

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:19 p.m. CST

But saying the entire 80s decade for music sucked is stupid

    by Tall_Boy66

Seriously, Transformers soundtrack "Nothing's gonna stand in our way" or "The Touch"? Or who the hell doesn't get a kick out of the odd Skid Row tune? That hair metal shit across the decade overall is pretty epic. It's completely empty-headed, yes, but it was well written. And they didn't have lead singers who blew their own faces off because they were pussies who couldn't deal with fame and their life. So that's a bonus.

Dead_Flag_Blues: "I was calm, cool, and collected the whole time

    by TheKiller7

LOL You got alzheimer, man? Fuck, read your damn posts. Read how this shit started. You came here with this fucking hipster attitude that the 80's was shit in terms of music. The entire decade. And you somehow expected everyone just to agree with that bullshit. Now...I hope you have the balls to OWN the fact that you were the one that gave out the first insult. I merely responded to the "blubbering, retard, shouting profanities and whatnot" crap YOU gave out with the same. At least I admit to that. Will you?

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:22 p.m. CST

Basically, you can't say entire decades suck for music

    by Tall_Boy66

Cripes, there's always one influence in da da da decade that'll lead to another one in another decade. You always get a musician who claims they were influenced by such and such. Nobody does it alone and says, "I was influenced by me". So if you like, basically, any time of music you can follow it back through previous decades to see the predecessors.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:23 p.m. CST

Yes, again... the STYLE OF MUSIC...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Prince's Superbowl set was pretty awesome

    by Tall_Boy66

Foo Fighters "My Hero", All Along the Watchtower, and Purple Rain. Last Superbowl halftime show worth a goddamn. And the outro solo to Purple Rain is gold. Guy's got mad guitar skillz, yo. <P>Basically, making a blanket statement about anything leads to ignorance, bigotry, and genocide. Generally, this is the average talkbacker position anyway, so actually asking someone to get beyond a surface detail about anything in an AICN talkback is like pissing in the wind. So don't expect many, if anyone, on the boards to have more than a surface knowledge of any given subject.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:26 p.m. CST

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:29 p.m. CST

Offspring does have a ton of good shit, though

    by Tall_Boy66

I honestly don't get when people just say "AH HA! YOU LIKE THAT BAND! FUCK YOU!!!" and then immediately discount everything. Hell, I can even name one Coldplay tune I like, and that's The Scientist. But that has almost everything to do with the video and it's one song, goddamnit. But, uh, where was I? Oh yeah, "Change the World" Offspring. Xnay on the Hombre. Great tune. Get it.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:33 p.m. CST

"Every Rose Has It's Thorn" is a typical 80s hair ballad, right?

    by Tall_Boy66

Let's just go back to Skid Row. Yes, it's very simplistic in it's chord structure, lyrics, sentiment, yadda yadda yadda, but it does have a discernible power to it. And just because it's a simple, universal sentiment doesn't automatically mean it's to be discounted. So on one hand it is empty headed because "Psh. Yeah, I know Every Rose Has It's Thorn". And on the other hand, it's kinda deep because, y'know, every rose DOES have it's thorn. KnowwhatImsayin?

I just didn't appreciate the logical fallacies from these 2...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Dismissing all of the artists i listed from the 90's, because they hadn't heard of them before... Or accusing me of being an "Emo, hipster, douche" because they weren't familiar with any of the names. That's just absolutely ridiculous. It's impossible to carry on a debate with people who are this irrational... you know what i'm talkin' about?

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 12:39 p.m. CST

For the last time... Classic stuff from the 90's:

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

"The Prodigy (Liam Howlett), Orbital, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Muse, Radiohead, Adiemus, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Amon Tobin, Mike Patton, Jim Thirlwell (aka Foetus), Nine Inch Nails, Primus, Nirvana, etc." <P> Do you 2 morons know how many different GENRES of music i cover in this list. Genres, and SUB-genres at that... <P> Don't dismiss shit you have never heard of, as "emo" or "hipster" or "craptacular"... it just makes you look foolish.

lmao i just realized the funniest part about teabag...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

You calling me "hipster" is hilariously ironic. Do you know what the word means? Apparently not... so let me explain it to you ;-) <P> A "hipster" by definition... is someone who embraces an attitude or culture, style, etc... from a specific era that is currently looked upon as "lame" or outdated. They like music, film, tv, etc. that is shunned nowadays. For instance... embracing the 80's! Which is exactly the OPPOSITE of what i'm doing! Hey, how about that? <P> Ironically... it's actually TEABAGGED who can be accused of being a "hipster". Wow, that's crazy huh? Did i make your tiny head explode with that one, tea?

What, you joined at birth? 'Cause you seem about twelve. Oh, wait, no, it says up there that you're twenty-seven. Wow. My wife must be way, way, way more mature than people her age (born in '81). Or else you're way, way, way less mature than people your age. Probably the latter. Still waiting on you to kill yourself. Done yet? How 'bout now? Now? Now? How 'bout... now?

What kills me about Dead Fag Blues...

    by The Bicycle Sharer

Is that almost every single band he lists (Orbitel, Aphex Twin, Nine Inch Nails, etc.) list bands of the 80s (including Tangerine Dream, Human League, Joy Division, Elvis Costello, REM, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Devo, etc.) that influenced them. Hell, Nine Inch Nails and Patton's band (what were they called? Cum Gargling Ass Wits, or something? Oh, yeah - Mr. Bungle(dick)!) are FROM the motherfucking '80s! What a fucking maroon!

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:17 p.m. CST

I do agree with the general sentiment 90s >> 80s

    by Tall_Boy66

But not by this gigantic margin where somebody flipped a fucking switch and suddenly when it turned over to 1990 music was SUDDENLY instantly memorable. It's pretty definite that for a brief moment in the alternative music, mainstream acceptance, critical recognition, and genre defining classics all aligned. Empty pop did dominate in the 80s, this is true. But it wasn't all bad. Who the fuck doesn't like Rasputin? Or 99 Luftballons? Or Take On Me? But there is a valid point if you want to say one decade is better than the other, I will say the 90s music decade overall is teh winnarz. If you want to get that simplistic. <P>Moderation people. Not just screaming insults. That's where true critical thinking lies.

And you keep telling me to OFF myself? I think the world would really be better off with you bud. I've seen your vicious posts on these boards for years. You're like an angry little child, always screaming profanities and whatnot. Attacking everyone you come into contact with... Sounds to me like you got some pent-up RAGE in there brotha. • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:23 p.m. CST

    Gotta disagree, Tall Boy

    by The Bicycle Sharer

But respectfully. Unlike that cock maggot, Dead Fag Blues.<p>Tastes in art and music are subjective. I used to think they were objective, but they aren't. They're subjective. The criteria used to judge and the relative weight given to those vary from person to person.<p>Now, I got no problem saying that I don't LIKE music of a certain decade (even though, of course, there are exceptions), but to state the word BETTER? Come on. Better (without the phrase "to me" following it) implies that there are some objective criteria by which each decade can be added up, measured, and compared with another. That's just not so.<p>Sure, the '90s can be better TO ME than the '80s, but better OBJECTIVELY?<p> And then to literally, out of hand, dismiss the entire decade? And then to quote a whole string of bands who LITERALLY list bands from the fucking '80s as their influences? Man, that shit is just fucking moronic.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:23 p.m. CST

    Dead_Flag_Blues.

    by Mr.Stiggs

You think that the music that you like somehow defines you and make your opinion more relevant. You're just as bad as film-school snobs that immediately dismiss the latest Hollywood blockbuster without ever laying eyes upon it. This behavior is kind of pathetic and makes you seem very self conscious. You're constantly trying to impress upon people how “intelligent” you are by dismissing “pop” music and embracing bands that are strictly avant-garde. But the insults and defensive posturing are really back-firing and make you come off as quite guarded and transparent. This elitist attitude deludes you into believing that your opinion is more valid than those of anyone else. The truth is that only listening to certain bands or genres in order to procure some type of credibility makes you one of the biggest conformers out there.<p> I was listening to “alternative” music before there was a name for it. I usually favor artists that contribute something meaningful or influential to the genre but I can readily admit that I like some music really bad music. I have a Masters Degree and a $300,000/year job and I occasionally listen to critically reviled bands like The Eagles (guilty pleasure). Does that make me part of the “unwashed masses”? The things that you watch or listen to do not determine your character. Those that oppose that theory will always be stuck in a juvenile, petty world.

Secondly... what, because 2 idiots (now, make it 3) who don't know JACK about music, don't "like" me?? lmao <P> Over the course of history of this website, i GUARANTEE you that you are one of the most hated, if not THE most hated people to ever post here. You gonna call him a "hipster-emo-douche" too for liking the 90's more than the 80's, and saying that the 80's was filled with "empty pop"... <P> Heh. You dumb fucking twats, that's what i've been saying the whole time... thanks again tallboy!

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:29 p.m. CST

    LOL! Derogatory and homophobic slurs?

    by The Bicycle Sharer

From a guy who uses the word "retarded!!!"<p>Yeah, I got some RAGE (and I use it AGAINST THE MACHINE so you should love it). That RAGE is built up from years of putting up with ignorant twats like yourself.<p>And not only does my wife love it so does your mom.<p>See, reasonable, intelligent people like D. Vader, Six Demon, leo57304, Mr. Stiggs, Tall Boy, Xiphos, Revenge of Fett, and others and I can agree, disagree, and have rational conversations and discussions that go back and forth. There may not be a lot of convincing done (though there is a some), but, in the end, we end up respecting each other.<p>Until you grow up from your mental age of 13, that's never gonna happen for you. Ever.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:30 p.m. CST

99 Luftballons was godhead! But Tall Boy...

    by TheKiller7

No one is making the claim that the 80's are better than anything else. Heck, no. But neither was 80's music 97% crap, like this assclown Dead_Flags_Blues claims. I merely point out that he was too damn young to even notice he lived in that decade to pass good judgement on it's impact and even as an "adult", he fails to give credit to that era's music. And yet he claims to an authority on the subject. Making an ass of himself in the process.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:31 p.m. CST

Mr. Stiggs - a great list of '80s artists, my friend

    by The Bicycle Sharer

And I, too, have a master's degree. Anyway, again - good list of '80s artists (and a few I left out)!

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:32 p.m. CST

    Sharer... "cock maggot"??

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

Wow. <P> Anyway... you're being argumentative for the sake of being argumentative. And you're incredibly naive as well. There is a lot more OBJECTIVITY in art, especially in music, that you are simply not recognizing. Now if you want to live in your happy little fairy land where all opinions are equal, and there is no objective truth at all, then so be it... But me? I'll stick with REALITY.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:33 p.m. CST

    "Master's degree" my ass

"who's gonna disagree with this guy, and myself now?"

    by TheKiller7

I'll agree with that when Tallboy claims, like YOU did, that 97% of 80's music was shit. I have yet to read him say that. And I'll take him up with that claim whenever he actually makes it. Until then... and like I said before, YOU'RE A DELUSIONAL HIPSTER. You damn assclown.

    by The Bicycle Sharer

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:37 p.m. CST

Wow sharer... thats a pretty broad accusation of me...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

I've had a number of fantastic conversations with D.Vader, Red Ned Lynch, BrightBoy, Vector, and plenty of others... so don't fucking "lecture" me on that shit, kid. You, RPLocke, Trannyformers, Scarlett'sbreastmilk, etc. are the lowest of the low here, so you can kindly FUCK right off.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 1:37 p.m. CST

Yes, opinions are subjective and not definite, totally.

    by Tall_Boy66

Critical analysis are like assholes, everybody's got them. I would lean more towards that 90s music was objectively better than 80s music only because you could probably go through a list of critical analysis sampling pool of, say, the top rock bands in the 90s vs. the top rock bands in the 80s and see which ones got more critical kudos but that's just splitting hairs and I don't have the time or energy to do that. In the end, I would plant my flag firmly in the 90s music was better than 80s but also it's just my flag. Anyone else and put their flag anywhere else they want because it's their flag. Get it? <P> anyway, I'm gonna try to download that My Chemical Romance video that has Grant Morrison in it. Seriously people, MCR is underrated. Go listen to Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. Absolute gold. I am a huge My Chemical Romance fan and they're not what you would call "emo" at all. But, once again, you have to actually look into the subject than just making a blanket statement. Let the freak flag fly.

    by MelGibsonsRacialTirade

It's good to see a verbal assault bother such an idiot as "Dead Flag Blues"...I find it comical that you claim I don't know anything about music - Of course you didn't refute my testimony that this is not a score. You see I studied music, and I write music professionally. I know what a score is, and this is a soundtrack, not a score. Oh, and you know shit about music, Dead Flag Blues

    by MelGibsonsRacialTirade

You're a close-minded simpleton. You complain about hip hop and pop in the 80's. The start of hip hop was something amazing. It was a penniless culture figuring out a way to make music without needing several thousand dollars for instruments. Today's hip hop is in a sad state. Disrespecting 80's hip hop makes you a fool. Anyone with a respect and knowledge of music knows that is a golden era for a genre. Also, Prince's Purple Rain album is probably one of the top 20 albums of all time. The fact that you can't get around personal hang-ups about what Prince looks like and what his music sounds like once again proves you know nothing about music. You're just some meth smoking hippy who only listens to garage bands and thinks he knows everything about music because he was 10 years old when Nevermind came out and it changed his life and he started wearing flannel shirts and "moshing" because it's soooo cool. Am I right? Get an education...you're a chump.

And 3).- that it was YOU who started the whole argument when you posted shit about the 80’s music sucking ass and then writing this taunt: *Patiently awaits the inevitable 80's defenders' retort...* Yes, you fucking troll, you were actually BAITING users into an argument. And now you try to act all innocent by claiming you did nothing. And yet you claim that you were” cool, calm and collected” the entire time. When in reality you came here with no other agenda put to start shit with other users. Every damn post you made was filled with condescending insults of every kind. And sue me for throwing them back at you. Indeed, users need to read this talkback. They’ll see how you were almost to the point of tears when you got more than you bargained for. To the point you were wishing some other talkbackers would come and defend your shitty and inane arguments. I mean, I lost count how many times you called out for RPLocke to save your ass. And LOL... fuck, you even had to dig around the talkbacks to find some historical record (hysterical?) about someone LIKING YOU, when you felt that The Bicycle Sharer had some doubts about that. Dayam! Man, you’re lucky that you’re not posting this trolling/baiting shit in any other board/forum because your ass would’ve been banned. And what a shameful end would that be, after spending 12 years of your life posting bitter shit at AICN.

Wow, Dead Flag Cunt's taste in music is as bad

    by Turd_Has_Risen_From_The_Grave

as his taste in movies. The fact that he cluelessly dismisses Prince, arguably the greatest and most innovative artist of the 80's in either the underground or the mainstream, while simultaneously praising all the 90's alternative hipster crap of he day, is proof of his ignorance. The 80's had some phenomenal music, and the idea that it was a terrible decade for music is a fallacy long overdue for debunking. But I guess this clown wasn't even fucking BORN before the 90's.

  • Sept. 18, 2010, 3:51 p.m. CST

    T_H_R_F_T_G - Dead_Flag_Blues was born in 1982

    by TheKiller7

And thus his spinal-cord wasn't fully developed when the decade was over. And yet he comes here trying to pass himself as an authority on the 80's music scene. When all the info on that decade he got second-hand. If a time traveler from the 1800's came to this era and told me how the music scene was in his times, I rather believe that guy than the historians who are guestimating how it went down. So in this case, I am with the talkbackers who actually LIVED THE 80'S AS TEENAGERS OR ADULTS. They know their shit.

Turd, that moron was born in '82

    by The Bicycle Sharer

Which means, by the time the decade ended, he was a whopping seven years old. He aged, mentally, about five years after that and, though his body continued to mature, the fool is stuck at twelve. Be careful, though, what you say about him. "Everybody likes" Dead Fag Blues. Or so he says. And he's been watching ME come here for YEARS (not even really sure MYSELF how old this ID is - I've been banned so many times, I forget), "insulting everyone" with my "cursing" and my "homophobia" (though my brother's gay). Joy Division's "Closer" was NOT heavily promoted on MTV. REM's "Document" had ONE single. The best things about U2's "Joshua Tree" ain't the singles that were played on MTV.<p>But I do agree with the assertion that there are hundreds of good records from the 80s. Partial to Joy Division myself, but also some Aztec Camera, Camper Van Beethoven, Pixies, Husker Du, Jane's Addiction, and Dinosaur Jr. as well as Violent Femmes, The Church, and The Smiths. But what can I say? I was in high school and early college and that was my bag.

As for promoted on MTV, The bands he listed were all on there. Check out dvds of Joy Divsion and REM dvds where they talk about mtv helping them and list all of the songs from that record going on there. Even the videos are on there. I own them both and have the proof right here. Come on over.

MTV didn't even start until Joy Division had

    by Turd_Has_Risen_From_The_Grave

turned into New Order after the death of Ian Curtis. REM were never a particularly mainstream band until Out of Time. Sonic Youth were alternative. And The Joshua Tree and Purple are absolutely GREAT records, mainstream or not (though both artists have done better albums). So that list could hardly be said to be composed of generic entries or heavily MTV promoted stuff. That honor would fall to a lot of the hair metal or hard rock stuff.

Please tell me which Joy Division DVD that's on where Joy Division "talk about mtv helping them and list all of the songs from that record going on there." I've been listening to JD since the '80s, I own multiple CDs, DVDs, untold versions of their songs, remixes, documentaries, movies and books on that seminal band. So, if you'll just point me to that DVD where Joy Division "talk about mtv helping them and list all of the songs from that record going on there" I'd be willing to pull it out of my collection (no need to come on over) and back you up.<p>However, since Ian died in 1980 and MTV launched in 1981, you're probably gonna have to find you that one DVD where the DEAD talk.<p>New Order (their spin-off band) won't be shit help to you on that assertion either because 1) New Order refused to talk about JD or Ian's death and 2) New Order got SHIT play on MTV until 1986 with their "Bizarre Love Triangle." I know because I was there. I watched MTV. Incessantly. First time I heard of the band was 1986 and "Bizarre Love Triangle." Research took me from there through all of New Order's stuff and right back to Joy Division.<p>I'm sure that REM talked about MTV helping their career somewhere. That's probably true. But REM had TWO songs from "Document" ("End of the World" "This One Goes Out") on MTV, but BOTH songs got played on their super late alternative show from like midnight till two in the morning or something. REM didn't get "helped" by MTV until about the time of "Stand" and then the "Out of Time" album.<p>But, I mean, shit, let's not argue. At least none of us here is now saying that "ALL MUSIC IN THE '80S SUCKED!!!" That dude was a fucking moron.

    Joy Division videos on MTV

    by The Bicycle Sharer

The main one that I remember was "Atmosphere" directed by Anton Corbijn in 1988 for the release of the Joy Division "Substance" album. I know that there was a video for "Love Will Tear Us Apart" but I don't remember it being played on MTV. Certainly not enough to "help" Joy Division. (How do you help a dead man and a non-existent band?)<p>Corbijn went on to direct the bad ass, "Control," Joy Division bio-pic. Some dislike it, but I fucking eats me up some Joy Division. I'm no eye-liner wearing Goth kid, but I can sure chill like a motherfucker with every little bit of Joy Division and anything about them.

    "Electronic" isn't a score?

    by SmoovLikeLando

As for the idea that it's not a score because it's electronic: grow the fuck up. And don't tell me my taste in music is whack, because I guarantee you that I love everything you love, I just love more stuff, too. Learn what you're talking about, learn not to apply uninformed blanket rules about shit because it just makes you come off as ill-informed and closed-minded. Yes, a score is a bunch of sheet music written for an orchestra - SOMETIMES. And while that can be absolutely compelling for a film or television it's ignorant, in 2010, to say that's the ONLY way anything can be called a "score." It's not like we're talking about some top 40 artist who doesn't know anything about music. We're not talking about Soulja Boy or Katy Perry hiring a producer to throw together some stuff. Don't let the rock star thing fool you, Trent Reznor is a classically trained musician. The idea that just because something wasn't played on an acoustic instrument, or even if it includes real acoustic instruments (which everything of Trent's does) ALONGSIDE electronic elements disqualifies it from being music is such narrow-minded, outdated thinking that I feel like in another few years it won't even bother me and I'll think it's kinda cute and endearing, like when my grandma forgets that we don't use the phrase "colored people" anymore. As for the score: so far, I love it. Can't wait to see how it plays out onscreen, and can't wait to hear the whole thing.

Oh, and Dead_Flag_Blues is ONE THIRD right.

    by SmoovLikeLando

He's an idiot for the idea that the 80's were awful. They definitely weren't my favorite either, but that doesn't mean there wasn't great stuff coming out of it. Even the 80's stuff I don't particularly like, I at least won't knock because I understand its significance to musical history. i.e. I'm open-minded enough to understand that something can be GOOD without me necessarily LIKING it. He's also equally if not more so whack in his perception of hip-hop. Fuck off. That same thing I just said about electronic music not counting as music being an ignorant statement applies to hip hop too, dumb fuck. Granted, most mainstream hip hop these days doesn't really make a case for intelligence but that doesn't mean there's none to be found, you just gotta look in the right places. Plenty of artists still make hip hop with an artistic mind. BUT. I do concur with SOME of his tastes. Amon Tobin, GY!BE, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Aphex Twin, Muse, all good. I have a feeling you'd like BT; make sure you check out the album "This Binary Universe." Seven tracks, an hour and a half of instrumental bliss. Full 110-piece orchestra alongside the most dope electronic shit I've ever heard, lots of cool glitchy stuff and stutter edits alongside acoustic instruments and orchestra, each piece in three movements. Where you went wrong was listing Avenged Sevenfold and System of a Down; I like both of those bands (SOAD more than the other) but if I were trying to argue artistic integrity I wouldn't list them. Not because they don't have it, but because it's one of those things where people are either on board with them or they aren't and there's no use arguing. (I'm sure that didn't make any sense.)

The Lotusflow3r collection at Target is a steal at $2. 2 of the disks are forgettable, but the Lotusflow3r album I thought was pretty fantastic. Same thing for 20Ten which my favorite album of the year. And going back to free stuff Trent gave away, he also threw some stuff up on The Pirate Bay (Broken and Closure DVDs, some greatest-hits style collections) plus several albums worth of official NIN material at remix.nin.com - if anything check out the Gave Up remix. Oh and then there was the Ninja 2009 (10?) tour sampler. Haven't had a chance to check out this new material, but I loved the Angels EP. Congrads to Trent and all the great freebees

I Kinda Think Prince And Reznor Are Mirrors Of Each Other

    by LaserPants

Both are pop geniuses. Both are innovators (yes, I know that Reznor didn't *invent* "industrial" music (I guess that crown goes to Karlheinz Stockhausen or maybe Throbbing Gristle), but he was the first to give it a pop gloss whilst retaining the grime, and attaining mainstream success). Both are egotistical (but rightfully so). Both are (or were, Reznor seems more butch now) androgynous sex symbols who did the gender bending thing. Both are awesome in their own unique way. I think they're both great.<br><Br>That said, why in the hell is Reznor doing music for this piece of shit movie? Why did Fincher direct it? What's next, a movie about the phonebook? Great.

    Reznor Is Played-Out

    by Media Messiah

He's passe, and now only makes-up the same sound alike songs, backwards and forwards, up...and down--and all around. Worse still, the songs always consist of the same worn-out schtick: Reznor claiming he's in pain, he's lonely, he's empty, and he's angry. I am fed-up with it all, because it is obviously an act, as evidenced by the fact that he does it so much in his songs, revolving the same themes, so it has to be an act. There is no sincerity in it anymore. He is just playing to his established image, and thusly, he is turning himself into a joke.

Reznor's Days Of Being A Depeche Mode Fan!!!

    by Media Messiah

MASTER AND SERVANT<BR><BR>by Ned Raggett<BR><BR> Right from the start, with its call-and-response vocals between Martin Gore and David Gahan ("It's a lot -- it's a lot -- it's a lot -- like life!"), "Master and Servant" shows Depeche plunging even more deeply into its self-created image of sexual/social renegades. Keep in mind that this is the same band that scored big with "Just Can't Get Enough" three years earlier -- and that it not only kept a pop audience with this song, but the single went number six in the band's homeland. The gentle distortion on the harmony vocals, the crunches and synth melodies, created via sampling as much metallic banging as the group could manage, Gahan's echoed delivery of the often downright sadistic lyrics, and more all contribute to this being one of the more unlikely hit numbers around. That Trent Reznor, to name one of many people, listened to this on a regular basis when young is perfectly clear as the shuddering, massive beats punch the song along. As always, Depeche know how to sugar the pill just enough, as with the quick synth shimmer that concludes the second verses, but as long as one can hear the screams and screeches littered throughout the mix, simple and sweet boy band pop this isn't.

  • Sept. 20, 2010, 5:40 a.m. CST

    Regardless

    by TheUmpireStrokesBach

"Reznor has never referred to his own work as industrial music, but admits to borrowing techniques from such early industrial bands as Throbbing Gristle and Test Dept." He himself has even referred to alot of the tracks on Pretty Hate Machine as Synthpop. Just concede the point MM. You are wrong about this. Just let this one go. No one will make fun of you. But they will if you keep pushing this erroneous idea of yours.

TheUmpireStrokesBach: That Band Was Making Noise

    by Media Messiah

DM...had structure, throbbing metallic baselines, and steel drum sounds gathered form sampled sounds of them beating trash cans and railroad railing with pipes. They combined that with melody, and string parts. It is that sound, that inspired Trent Reznor. The other bands before DM, were just making noise and screaming over it.

  • Sept. 20, 2010, 6:45 a.m. CST

Just making noise and screaming over it

    by TheUmpireStrokesBach

That my friend is the genesis of Industrial music. Reznor took the synthpop of Depeche Mode and welded it to the noise and industrial-ness of Throbbing Gristle and all the others like Skinny Puppy and whatnot. You are still wrong. Let it go.

  • Sept. 20, 2010, 6:48 a.m. CST

Trent Even Ripped-Off DM's Bondage Goth Look

    by Media Messiah

That's how much they influenced him. But, hey, if we want to get technical about things, in reference to industrial music, Kraftwerk was formed in 1970, and Devo was formed 1973. Those two groups were before them all.

Then in 1980 you have Einstürzende Neubauten

    by TheUmpireStrokesBach

  • Sept. 20, 2010, 7:15 a.m. CST

    I'll give you Kraftwerk maybe

    by TheUmpireStrokesBach

Even though that was more considered Krautrock at the time. If we want to get really technical, LaserPants above has us both beat by mentioning Karlheinz Stockhausen. Who would almost seem to be the Godfather of it all. But you need to realize DM did in no way invent Industrial music. A statement which you seem to really be trying to avoid now.

  • Sept. 20, 2010, 7:32 a.m. CST

And even if Throbbing Gristle didn't invent the genre

    by TheUmpireStrokesBach

Without them you wouldn't have ever been calling it "Industrial" music in the first place.<p>"There's an irony in the word 'industrial' because there's the music industry. And then there's the joke we often used to make in interviews about churning out our records like motorcars—that sense of industrial. And...up till then the music had been kind of based on the blues and slavery, and we thought it was time to update it to at least Victorian times—you know, the Industrial Revolution" - Genesis P-Orridge

Yes, Everyone Knows Reznor Didn't Invent Industrial

    by LaserPants

People say it's Throbbing Gristle, but Stockhausen is probably more accurate what with his found sound and musique concrete compositions. But I digress.<br><br>Where Reznor is an innovator was in infecting industrial with a pop sheen and making accessible to the masses while also retaining the grime and aggro of the genre.

  • Sept. 20, 2010, 10:29 a.m. CST

    Completely agree LaserPants

    Depeche Mode??? Really???

    by LaserPants

Depeche Mode are synth-pop, not even *remotely* industrial AT ALL. Not sure where MM got that idea. Anyways, I did read somewhere that they sampled some of Einsturzende Neubauten's (who were friggin' A W E S O M E in their day) sounds and hastily defanged / pussified them for ease of sale to the feyest of the fey.

Wins the award for the "Most Mature and Rational" post since i left this talkback... <P> "He's an idiot for the idea that the 80's were awful. (I'm sure that didn't make any sense.) ur and a half of instrumental bliss. (I'm sure that didn't make any sense.)" <P> Ok... now that the CRAZIES have left the building, we can continue with a civil discussion... "Lando". Although i obviously would argue your first point about me being an "idiot" for not liking the mindless, shallow, and vapid garbage that dominated the decade... There were obviously a few gems in there scattered about... but my POINT was, that ON THE WHOLE, the decade produced massive amounts of SHIT. Moreso than any other decade. <P> THAT is my point. And it seems that many of you missed that. Of course Metallica was amazing, as was U2's "Joshua Tree" (fantastic album)... i'm not disputing that at all. What i AM disputing, is when people list WHITESNAKE, PRINCE, MADONNA, CYNDI LAUPER, etc. to support their "argument" that that qualifies as, objectively, "good" music. As a general rule, "popular" music lacks artistic merit and integrity. So i admit, there's a decent possibility that there is some "underground" stuff i haven't heard from the 80's that is, in fact, pretty fuckin' good. I always love to discover new music (i.e. Foetus, as one of the morons, STICKYWHITE, mentioned above...) So i'm all for it! <P> "I'm open-minded enough to understand that something can be GOOD without me necessarily LIKING it." That's funny... that's exactly what i do. I've done that in countless film debates. There are plenty of films that i don't enjoy, PERSONALLY, but i can appreciate them in an OBJECTIVE manner. I can appreciate the technical achievements such as the cinematography, score, performances by the actors, the production design, etc... I am extremely objective when it comes to analyzing and dissecting art, so lay off the baseless assumptions, will ya? ;-) <P> And thank you for being the ONE GUY to finally admit, or point out, that most of those artists i listed are fucking QUALITY. (Something Mr. Sharer failed to do, until AFTER you did... lol) <P> And props for being the FIRST person that's apparently even HEARD of any of them... lol My biggest problem was with "Teabagger", who simply dismissed all of them as "douchey, hipster, EMO shit". That just proved how absolutely IGNORANT this fool truly is... (also proved his severe lacking in debating skills) Teabagger, seriously, do yourself a favor and check out some of the artists i listed. Despite what you may think of ME, don't let that stop you from discovering good music (although i'm not sure if someone like you could appreciate this kind of music, but i'm giving you the benefit of the doubt ;-) <P> Anyway, nice to hear from someone who has similar taste in music! And for the record, Avenged Sevenfold, The Offspring, and System of a Down aren't some examples of my favorite artists. I actually contemplated not even putting those in there, and it seems as if my instincts were correct... <P> Of course those aren't exactly the best examples of amazing artistry, but they were definitely influential, and i do enjoy them on some level. And as others have rightfully pointed out, Offspring's "Smash" is an incredible album. (Their later shit is just that... SHIT) And honestly, despite System of a Down being played on MTV and whatnot, there is definitely some talent involved there... just check out their first 2 albums. There's a few FANTASTIC tracks in "Toxicity" that weren't played on the airwaves. Their manipulation of tempo and melody can be really fucking impressive at times... Finally, with Avenged Sevenfold (again, with the MTV thing...) nobody can talk shit about them until they've listened to the entire "City of Evil" album. There is some absolutely EPIC shit on there. (Would probably make Queen proud... lol) Some great melodies and chord progressions, and there really is a complexity to their music that most people are completely unaware of. Some truly powerful stuff... But most people simply pass them off as just another "hipster" group for the MTV generation... and that couldn't be further from the truth. <P> "I have a feeling you'd like BT; make sure you check out the album "This Binary Universe." Seven tracks, an hour and a half of instrumental bliss. Full 110-piece orchestra alongside the most dope electronic shit I've ever heard, lots of cool glitchy stuff and stutter edits alongside acoustic instruments and orchestra, each piece in three movements." Man, you must know me well ;-) 'cause that description sounds fucking AWESOME. My kind of thing, most definitely... That album title sounds very familiar, and i'm gonna check it out immediately. <P> I'm gonna respond to Sharer and a couple of others in a bit... as if anyone's going to actually read this shit. lol And i'm praying SHARER has taken his meds and pulled his head out of his ASS, so that we may actually carry on a decent debate ;-) <P> To be continued...

    by Dead_Flag_Blues

"Shit, **I** like some of the bands DFB listed. You pretty much nailed the problem everyone had with him -- criticizing shit as OBJECTIVELY bad when it's merely just not to his taste, dismissing an entire decade of music (with a few minor exceptions)?" <P> Bravo man, bravo! You finally conceded the fact that i HAVE GOOD TASTE IN MUSIC. Admitting (only AFTER that fantastic post by Lando...) that you liked the artists i had listed previously. <P> That's funny though, that you failed to ever acknowledge that before, since you claimed that i had "shit" taste in music. Hhhhmmmm, curious... <P> Anyway, glad to hear it. Maybe there is some hope for you afterall ;-) <P> "criticizing shit as OBJECTIVELY bad when it's merely just not to his taste" <P> Sorry bud, i don't do that. As i pointed out in my response to Lando... i am completely objective when it comes to art. There is plenty of stuff i don't personally "jam out to", but i can respect it, artistically speaking... There's a lot of classical music that would fall under that category. Lots of "ethnic" music around the world that i can also appreciate as well... but i probably wouldn't ever listen to a whole lot of it in my spare time. That brings us to 80's music and hip-hop. <P> I apologize to the hip-hop defenders out there, but i honestly cannot find any redeeming, OBJECTIVE qualities to "old school hip-hop". It's completely shallow, gimmicky, derivative junk, that couldn't possibly appeal to anyone, albeit on a superficial level. Are you going to argue that there really is some "substance" to anything L.L. Cool J. or Run DMC put out? lol C'mon now... You can "enjoy" that type of music, certainly. But don't argue that there's any artistic merit to it, or that it's objectively GOOD music... that's just absurd. <P> You know, the irony with "hip-hop" and African-American culture, is that some of the music i really enjoy (take for instance, "Adiemus"...) is actually closer to their "roots", than hip-hop is. Karl Jenkins, the composer for Adiemus dabbles in many different ethnic and cultural music, including Arican... There are some absolutely BEAUTIFUL compositions that are done in an "African flavor" (do yourself a favor and go check out "Raindance" by Adiemus on youtube, for an example of what i'm talking about) So if you're thinking (as i'm sure you are...) that i simply dismiss hip-hop because i'm "racist" or some such nonsense, just keep that in mind. I LOVE traditional african music, which is precisely WHY i dislike american hip-hop and rap. <P> Am i starting to make my points a little more clear yet? lol

Dead_Flag_Blues: It's Better Than What You Have Now!!!

    by Media Messiah

In fact, most of your rock, rap, dance and pop heroes...of today, draw their inspiration directly from 80s acts, and their music--copying them, as best they can--at every turn. The new acts have invented nothing. At least, those past bands brought us punk, rap, New Wave, Industrial, and Speed Metal, stuff that is still being copied and admired even now--but all you guys got was Grunge, and that was stolen from 80s groups like Killing Joke, but other than that, you got nothing else. Even Emo and Goth are based on 80s music. The new generation has originated nothing--no new music genres, nothing???!!! You are a generation of lazy...untalented Xerox Copiers and Parrots!!!

Dead Flag Blues = Insecurity Personified

    by Turd_Has_Risen_From_The_Grave

Has to call up non-existent 'support' for his laughable arguments; has to pre-emptively declare how he has delivered the 'beatdown' on his various opponents and various ad homenin attacks; and is so, so painfully keen to be seen as a fan of 'credible' music (or what he naively thinks is credible music) by the cool kids that it causes him to blunder into utterly baffling faux pas. What a snivelling little shit you are. You got OWNED on this talkback pal, both by myself and by The Bicycle Sharer and Teabagger Harry, so you scuttled off until the smoke had cleared and the talkback was near dead. Dear, oh dear.<p>BTW, I don't recall ANY of those names backing you up on the SW talkback or even addressing me personally, save THE_CHOPPAH, and we all know what a worthless waste of space troll that guy is. The fact that you try to corral him into your gang of talkback 'buddies' should cause one to have an aneurysm from manic laughter. You certainly have a wild imagination. Toodle-oo, buddy.

Anyone who lumps Prince and David Bowie in with Cyndi Lauper and Madonna and chart pop proves he know absolutely ZILCH about music. Zip. Nada. NOBODY with an inkling of musical knowledge would delve into such absurdity. You do know that Reznor's music and production was heavily influenced by these two (not that he's even near the artists they are), and that he absolutley REVERES them...er, don't you? I think everyone here has schooled you enough, though. It must be quite embarassing. Just a dumb college kid liking hipster bands (and the most obvious and popular ones at that - NIN, Radiohead - all 'pop' musicians) and who knows very little about music at any level, or where it came from.<p>PS. ROTJ is inferiror to ROTS. Word.

    Turd, excellent analysis of Dead_Flag_Blues

    by Mr.Stiggs

I've never seen such a transparent and insecure individual as Dead_Flag_Blues in my life. His posts are centered around one particular mantra: “See everyone, I DO have good taste in music. I do.” Look at how intelligent I am...I only like bands that MATTER.” “See...see”.<p> I stated previously that a person's taste in entertainment does not define their characteristics as a human being. Listening to certain bands or watching a particular genre of film does not indicates one's level of intelligence. Unfortunately, people like Dead_Flag_Blues adhere to the fallacy that their choice of entertainment somehow elevates them above the “unwashed masses”. They think that they are better than others because they favor a particular band...that's ludicrous. This “hipster” tendency to shun anything that they deem mainstream is considered by some to be a sign of distinction but it's just as conforming as any other social norm. The ironic fact is that his dismissal of an entire decade's worth of music is certainly a sign of an ignorant and small minded individual.<p> The 1980s had its fair share forgettable musical acts but for the most part it was one of the most innovated periods of American music. Punk, Underground, New Wave, Heavy Metal, Electronic, Industrial, Rap, College/Progressive Rock, and the proliferation of UK based artists were all facets of the 80s music scene. Many of today's band's roots are firmly seated in the world of 1980s music and would not exist without that influence.
