ABC Snags
TRUE LIES!!
I am – Hercules!!
ABC has landed the script for “True Lies,” which could become James Cameron’s first TV series since “Dark Angel.”
It is of course based on Cameron’s 1994 movie about a superspy trying to balance his work with his homelife. (His activities are so classified even his wife doesn’t know what the secret agent really does for a living.)
The project reunites Cameron with “Dark Angel” writer-producer Rene Echevarria (“Deep Space Nine,” “Now and Again,” “The 4400,” “Medium,” “Castle”), who will serve as showrunner if ABC takes “Lies” to series.
I’d give this a look.

unless they come up with more than the single joke
and when are you gonna review hawaii 5-0? according the sf chron, its all eye candy...which is ok by me...ill watch it on line and fast forward to the bikini parts
-
Tom Arnold is available and not working on another one of his many blockbusters.
-
for half the season? i mean normally try and stretch it for 2 or 3 seasons but the show will probably be cancelled before it reaches the halfway point. but as long as this gives Fox an excuse to produce an actual special edition dvd/blu-ray then its all good.
-
Hmm?? Bad idea.
-
other than that Sports show.....
-
You know it's bound to happen!
-
No, seriously. LOLQUE?
-
If this takes place POST the wife finding out his identity, this could be big fun. Esp with a kid in the know. The whole family works at hiding spy stuff, and chips in what skills they have. Played for fun, it could be excellent.
-
...that at first it seems kind of crazy to go back to the 1990's well for a tv series, and then you think about True Lies, and its basic ingredients are many of the same things we've been getting in formulaic, high-concept tv shows.
-
cancer came back. He's not going to be around for season 2. :(
-
And make the wife the secret agent and the husband oblivious. Then Elisha Dushku could play the part. Or Linda Cardellli or Shannon Woodward.
-
is a bust.
-
I would have been excited about this 5-10 years ago. So many people are ripping off the formula it's hard to picture me getting into it now.
-
cameron has never let me down. not one single time. if he's bringing True Lies to tv i'm so fucking watching!! they do need to get Arnold to do a cameo as himself as Gov though. that would be cool

Can we just get a True Lies special edition DVD/Blu Ray?
by ShabbyBlue
A special edition DVD was in the works way back in 2001, but then 9/11 happened so Cameron and the studio cancelled its release because they thought it would somehow offend the 9/11 victims. Well... it's over 9 years later now. Can we please stop using that excuse and finally get the LONG OVERDUE special edition of True Lies? I'm tired of settling for the 1999 barebones DVD release.
-
It falls into that same area Chuck does with the spy/action/comedy thing. If the wife knows in the series then it might be interpreted as being similar to that new JJ show. I don't mind a recast of the Arnold role at all, roles have been recast before, it's not as if Trasker was so tied to Arn, you just need a fairly charming actor.

Fucking shill

Fact.
-
On a major network there'd be too much red tape bullshit with things they cant say and do. Fuck standards.
-
Damn, wish it WASNT ABC, i think they will not be able to get away with the stuff that will be crucial to a TL series. Is cameron even involved or just gonna be getting an exec/characters credit?
-
Sept. 18, 2010, 1:50 a.m. CST
I'm sure Cameron will be less involved as he was for Dark Angel
by ShabbyBlue
He'll have an executive producer credit so he can get a percentage of any profits earned from this show, but that'll probably be the extent of his involvement. I doubt he'd even direct an episode, unlike Dark Angel.
-
wasn't there going to be a mr. and ms. smith show too?

It should just be next generation:
Eliza Dushku (w/ Tom Arnol
by ShiftyEyedDog2

Seriously, youre not gonna get Arnie anyway, and you cant recast a guy like that. Dushku is available and does lots of TV. Just make the show about her, grown up and joining the family business. Tom Arnold can act as a mentor or advisor or something.

-
they filmed a pilot, starring martin henderson and jordanna brewster, but it was never picked up for series.
-
it lasted like three episodes, but what I saw I liked.
-
The Mr. And Mr. Smith pilot never made it to series.
-
And either Eddie Cibrian or Brian Austin Green. Continue the movie and give people the sequel they have been asking for. Have Arnold and Jamie appear in the pilot and in "sweeps" episodes. That way they don't have to commit to a full series. Get Tom Arnold as a heavily recurring character. Get Michelle Rodriguez as another spy who is friends with Dushku. And finally, mine the Cameron-verse for "Big Bads". Utilize personal relationships to get actors he has worked with to return to do guest arcs each season. The thought of Sigourney Weaver as a bad guy for a season makes me smile.
And make fun of the genre. Have Jennifer Garner and Gina Torres appear one episode as the Bad Guys of the week.
-
And their new president (who is from ABC Family and turned that network completely around) has been aggressively pursuing many "Hot" projects. They are really a force to be reckoned with this development season. Also there is a penalty clause into this deal that ABC has to pay if it doesn't get picked up to series.
-
one of the best action/comedy/romance movies of the 90s.

Will the actor who gets Arnold's part do some of his own stunts?
by SnootyBoots
Or will he take a pass on the action scenes like Arnold did in the movie? You want to see a movie where the actor just shows up for his close ups, it's True Lies.
-
the black gay man is the secret agent guy while the latino gay man is the housewife who doesnt know anything about his secret identity.
There is also a white straight guy who is a close friend of the couple and pretends to be a priest but in reality he is the partner of the agent guy.
i am telling you its going to be a hit for the american tv audience.yep.
-
Will the main characters be the same as the one's in the film? If so, does it occur after the movie, or is this more like a reboot? If the wife already knows her husband is a spy (or vise versa as people are suggesting), then that leaves little room for the type of tension that results from a long kept secret (think of other TV shows like Big Love). Because I like the film, I kind of wish this show was more of a sequel than a reboot. But a good sequel might be trickier to pull off than just starting from the beginning.
-
...Crimson Jihad types. Neither Cameron nor ABC will go there again, like the rest of Hollywood. Not in this spineless era of PC.
-
but hasn't aged well. There are moments, like the horseback chase, but the villains are caricatures, and arnie was almost mean-spirited toward his wife at times. Besides, isn't NBC already doing the married spy bit? Guess every network has the have its own spy show.
-
Oh, they'll probably have some Crimson Jihad. I see plenty of Islamic terrorists--mixed in with other types of terrorists. You don't care about something being PC--you care when it is PC to the political POV opposite your own. Whether to Right or Left, PC is PC.
-
A bunch of radical Islamic terrorists hell bent on attacking America? Shit, I'd say they were the most realistic part of the movie.

Ok, so what exactly is this show going to be?
by Turd_Has_Risen_From_The_Grave
Is it going to revolve around the characters of Harry and Helen but recast with different actors? That immediately dulls my interest in it. You can't recast Arnold, and he was a big part of why the movie worked in the first place. Now if it's simply set in the same universe as True Lies and is canonical then it might be good. It could lead to a second theatrical feature, though I don't think Cameron is too interested. The show would be better if it revolved around a completely different couple who work for the agency, and you could have references to Arnold's character. Or it could revolve around Eliza Dushku's character who is now taking up a role in the family business, and there would be cameos from Jamie Lee Curtis and Tom Arnold could have a regular role (cause that guy gotta eat!). That way you can step around the Arnold issue or avoid recasting/ retconning things.

Snore.

Horrible idea. And Cameron needs more money?
by TheBikeShopOwnerFromDifferentStrokes
No, thanks.
-
It world for sarah connorchles
-
since the movie apart from being a spy/action film,it was also a romance/comedy with its main theme to be about the typical phase that a lot of middle-age married couples have to endure.
-
I've liked almost all of the shows Echevarria's done, and I enjoyed "Dark Angel" greatly - well, S1 & 2... 3 went into WTF-land.

Although I'm not sure how long they can really keep True Lies going before they're rehashing Alias, Pretender, and similar "secret Agent" stuff.
-
Empire is when Anakin and Vader BECAME the same guy. Not when they were two different guys. Unless you are talking about early versions of the story.
-
i wish i could find a nice girl, marry her, and become international spies together.
-
we'd never even have ESB. What a shit ad.
-
TRUE LIES is my #10 favorite movie of all time. I wanted a sequel not a damn TV show. *cries*
-
They could have her play the same character, even! It makes perfect sense that the daughter would grow up to be a spy herself, and those sort of roles are pretty much Eliza's bread and butter these days. So help me god, I fucking loved Dollhouse (I know, shut up), and I miss Eliza on my TV screen!
-
Fingers crossed tho' really hope they pull it off http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmGMQbzfHAo
-
Kick-ass legs and ass but more suited for supporting roles then a lead role. If she is in the lead and or has too much screen time the show is doomed. She is great in small doses. And she's hot..
-
... to get around the No-Arnold problem ... Simply have him (and Jamie Lee Curtis?) missing and have their second best agent (new leading man) charged with finding out what happened to them ... maybe also bringing in Eliza occasionally for support.
-
so i'm in! (no braga thank the gods!)
-
He'll be out of work soon enough and it would be great to see him in this role again.
