In this photo (which could have been doctored), the area around the pool directly below the Lincoln memorial holds 200,000 people. Even Comedy Central's own estimates have the audiences for each rally pegged at about 25,000. I have no doubt the content of these rallies will be spot -- exposing the pomp and circumstance of the demagogues who take themselves way too seriously while offering nothing of substance -- but the headline you'll see on Fox News on Sunday will be mostly about how the attendance paled in comparison to the Beck rally.

While it wouldn't surprise me (especially with rallies headed by politicians), I have yet to see any hard-core evidence that republicans/conservatives have to be paid to go to a conservative rally. Compare the left, which has groups who exist to be paid to rally and protest, as well as bus people in from areas even outside of a state for state issue (the Arizona protests being one of them). You may not like it, Spidercoz, but there are lefties who have made a career out of doing nothing but staging protests. There may be righties who do the same thing, but they are no where NEAR as professional and consumer oriented (ala MTV and their "get out the vote" type stuff).

Is that your perception of Beck outweighs facts in an argument? As others have pointed out, the whole point of the crowd size number count is to discredit Beck and Palin. Like their personalities or not, but if they make a good point with history to back it up, what can you do but ignore it or agree with it?

When pressed for where she heard it, she stuttered for a minute and finally settled on "on the news". Bravo, madam.

Here are some facts for idiot Teabaggers here: CBS commissioned an estimate from AirPhotosLive, a company that provides crowd sizes based on aerial photos. CBS noted that there's a margin of error of plus or minus 9,000. So, by this estimate, there were as few as 78,000 attendees or as many as 96,000. This is using that scary thing; science. I can understand why Republicans would use their heart for the real estimate right? Why dont we use Michelle Bachmann's 1,000,000

...I can tell you that there were probably no more than 100K people there. Sure, there are variances when you take into account the actual attendees vs. curiosity seekers, tourists, and so forth. However, there was what we in the area call, "A Lot of Green". Meaning that anyone who has attended DC rallies in the past kind of gets the feel for their magnitude and can spot the open spaces on the Mall.<P>So, when you consider that Michelle Bachman began lying about the size of the crowd THAT DAY, I have to laugh at those who vehemently defend the larger crowd estimates (300K-500K) whose totals are derived from dubious methods.<P>The best part about the rally was the word on the street in DC. Most people were confused as to what the message was supposed to be. They went there thinking they were going to get a healthy dose of Tea Pary/Anti-Obama red meat. Instead...they got an evangelical sermon served up with some Sarah Palin military cocksucking.<P>"Restoring honor" by "returning America to God"? Thomas Jefferson would have been appalled.

Being British, I don't really understand American politics. It seems to involve a lot of shouting and fake tan. We like to do things more sedately, with a little shabby-genteel corruption, and some funny wigs. However, given that there's always the risk that you lot might get carried away someday, and accidentally extinguish all life on the planet, I've recently decided to try and take an interest, even if its only to gauge how worried I should be. I can't do much that's constructive beyond that. I haven't even got a garden to dig a bomb shelter in. So, it seems to me, as near as I can work out, American politics seems to be a perpetual spat between two groups. These groups are roughly the same size, which is why the spat has been going on for so long. Neither group's core positions are fundamentally unreasonable, which probably explains why you've only had one civil way. Both groups have got an entertainingly wacky fringe. We don't get to see much of the wacky Democrat fringe in the UK. Probably because they aren't as funny. The stereotype that appears to be propounded is that they are the sort of people who would, given the chance, sink the entire US GDP into funding an interpretative dance collective staffed entirely by tetraplegic lesbians. This is obviously quite funny, but is, sort of, at least congruent with the basic values of the party, merely amplified to a ludicrous extent. What I can't work out is the connection between the Republicans and religious lunatics. Near as I can see, the Republicans core values are that people should stand on their own two feet, that business, trade, and capitalism are good, and that government should be as small as possible. I just don't see the connection between that and people who believe that the earth is only a few thousand years old, that the Theory of Evolution is responsible for the Holocaust and stuff like that. I mean, these people are just dim. I sort of figured that the key appeal of the Republicans was that they were hard-headed realists who weren't taken in by the let's-all-hold-hands-and-sign-we-are-the-world antics of the Democrats. I can't see the connection between that position and being, well, a mental who thinks Jesus lives in his sock drawer and has told him how to cure gays. Can anyone explain? I ask because some of these people seem to be doing quite well in your election-y things at the moment, and I've always been of the view that people who genuinely believe that the Rapture will follow a terrible apocalypse should never be placed in a position where they could realistically try and find out whether they're right or not.

Anyways: (1) the argument over the numbers of people is rather stupid, as there are photos (which I posted early in the TB) which show how many people were there. Judging by the photos themselves (as opposed to any biased right/left leaning sites), it appears that there are roughly 400 to 600K people there, being that the area around the reflecting pool holds 200K, and the open area to the left roughly 2 to 3 times more area, and is 80 to 90% full. Simply doing the math by the aerial pic, you get the rough number above. GW Bush came into office with a national debt of 5.5 Trillion $, no wars, no cold war, and a huge surplus. 8 years later he left office with a national debt of 11 Trillion $ and an annual debt of 1.3 Trillion $. So 7.5 of that 13 Trillion $ comes directly from 2 REPUBLICAN administrations. Oh, and for the record, this Fiscal Year's deficit (which is Obama's first full FY) is down 8%.

The rally was attended by hundreds of thousands, NOT tens of thousands. UK newspapers estimated the crowds at 1.2 million. NBC News and the New York Times estimated the crowds close to 300,000. There were people all over the mall, both sides of the Reflecting Pool, and on the other sides of the trees on both sides. Any "objective person" would try to be honest and split the difference. Anyone who's ever been to a football game could tell you that there were clearly more people than 78,000 people there. A real "journalist" would split the difference on the estimates. They wouldn't immediately seek out the absolute lowest number they could find. They'd throw out the lowest numbers (78,000) and the highest (1.2 million) and accept that it's somewhere in between, most likely 300,000ish. It really is embarrassing for you that you seem to be so blinded by your hatred of all people conservative that you will purposely grasp on to anything at all you can to try to downplay the groundswell of anger in this country towards "your side" of the political spectrum.<p>Oh, by the way, anyone who thinks that Stewart and Colbert will be able to top the rally that just happened are out of their minds. Just because Stewart is loved by other liberals in the media and liberal journalists, doesn't mean he will be able to get people to come out in the cold in numbers larger than 300,000. Beck picked one of the busiest times of the year in DC to hold his rally. So it is reasonable to assume that some of the people were not there especifically for him, but would have been there at Lincoln's Memorial anyway. Another neglected fact is how many people were there compliments of free bus transport, simply because it was free. The area to the left of the podium was for people cueing (that's lining up) for tickets to federal sites. A condition of Becks permit was to keep his droolers out of that area so as not to impede access. Stewart and Colbert are going to draw their crowd at a time when its going to be cold, has a higher liklihood of raining, most people's vacation time is over, and a shorter day. So the people at their rally will have a higher likelihood of actually being there to hear waht they have to say. Oh yeah, about teleprompters, I prefer to have someone like the president or anyone giving a press conference for that matter to have the actual facts at their immediate disposal and not have to rely on their individual memory. the world is big and the issues are complicated. Some clarity is refreshing. We have tried stupidity as a presidential qualification twice, once with a Democrat, once with a Republican. Both disasterous presidents who managed to get us into wars we'd have been better off not fighting for absolutely wrong reasons. Is it an accident that they were both from Texas? Sorry Harry. Texas is a great state with a lot going for it, a lot more than most states, but y'all put together pretty lousy presidents.

When the left was out there protesting, marching, and drawing pictures and writing signs unflatteringly portraying George W. Bush, it was a wonderful, patriotic thing that showed the American spirit. Now that the right is fed up and doing the same thing to Obama, it's divisive, fear-mongering, racist, and just out of control, and it needs to be toned down. Seems like a bit of a double standard to me.

Tea party people are conservatives, independents as well as libertarians and conservative democrats who are concerned about the size of the government. They are also concerned about the massive amount of debt, BOTH parties have foisted upon the American people. It's not about the parties it is about getting back to the constitution. Bush was very liberal and spent money like crazy, Obama is a lifelong communist (black liberation theology anyone? Mother a commie, Dad as well as grandparents & everyone who knew in college) who is spending money and amassing power at a rate not seen since Wilson or FDR. America IS a Christian nation because MOST of the religious people who live here are and were Christians, mostly protestant. The qualities that made the country great are largely in line with the way protestants were expected to live their lives; thrift, hard work, self reliance! Don't forget, minding your own f'ing business. Argue about irrelevancies' like Stewart and Colbert all you want, in November, we are going to take back what is ours... And after we gut the government and throw the ant-American leftists out of office, in ten years this will be a free and prosperous nation again. At the ballot box, or on the battlefield.

I didn't hear ANYONE call Obama anything like that at the rally. I heard socialist, I heard Hitler, I heard many other things, but no nigger or monkey. (Actually, I’d say the treatment of Bush for his 8 years by the pubic AND the media was far worse than anything you’re seeing now. Far worse.) My problem is that it doesn’t seem to be equal. When people attack the president now, they are racist, intolerant, anti-American, I could go on and on. Yet, the bumper stickers (Dissent IS American, A village in Texas is missing it’s idiot), protests, and media coverage that attacked Bush was just telling the truth, standing up for people, Patriotic, again, I could go on and on. It just seems like it’s an incredible double standard. The left just doesn’t seem to be able to role with it the way the right had to for 8 years. My guess is you're one of those "tolerant" types.

Reagan tripled the debt in his 2 terms. GW Bush doubled the debt and left us with 2 wars and a $1.3 trillion deficit per year after inheriting a surplus. Obama's first full fiscal year has a drop in deficit of 8%.

Second of all, we know for 100% certainty that there are several websites on the internet set up and liberal operatives that have been caught on camera trying to crash the Tea Parties and pretend to be racists. Check youtube, you'll find examples. The VAST MAJORITY of all the protest has been specifically about Obama's policies. And that massive deficit under Obama so far? How much of that is paying for Bush's 2 wars that were unpaid for, Bush's 2 tax cuts that were unpaid for, Medicare Pt D that was completely unpaid for and TARP? the fact remains that Reagan was elected promising to reduce the debt and instead he tripled it. GW Bush came into office with a surplus and a debt that was decreasing. He left with double the debt and deficit spending that can't be reduced until we can get out of his wars and undo his irresponsible tax cuts. And if you really think that Obama and the Democrats actually have "control" of the Gov., then why are there over 400 bills sitting in the Senate being Filibustered by the Republicans that have already passed the House.

The only proof you need to realize that Republicans/Conservatives are uneducated and easily duped: 1% of the American population controls 80% of its' wealth, but pays only somewhere in the neighborhood of 37% of its' taxes. Yet when someone talks about making that 1% pay 38, 39, or god forbid 40% of the nations' taxes, the "base" is quickly whipped into a frenzy of rage over "wealth redistribution" and "socialism" and worried that the "trickle down economics" that have never worked will suddenly continue to not work.... The greatest magic trick the Republican party has ever managed to pull off is convincing middle class white America that they have their best interests at heart. Not that the Democrats are really any better. Ultimately it's all a bunch of rich white people continuing the run the country, one way or another. Those who have the gold make the rules. It's just the delusion of many in America (many of which gravitate to the conservative side) that someday if they just try hard enough they'll break into that top 1% themselves.

I've really enjoyed watching the Tea Party movement in the USA swell from a tiny gaggle of astroturf shysters into great crowds of semi-hysterical, angry suckers. Theoretically enraged by the massive and entirely real expansion of government powers in recent decades, the Tea Partiers have instead offered endless entertainment by losing their damn minds in terror of fictional Communist plots. The last thirty years have seen a gigantic and well-planned heist in which the basis of their economy has been intentionally shifted from production to finance, vastly empowering the nation's royal class and repeatedly kicking the common man in the balls. When the ordinary punters finally decide that enough is enough, they throng together and... Come out, balls bared, shouting please sir, may I have another! in the cause of royalty. Magical. The most entertaining aspect, of course, is the revolutionary sloganeering, those fruity little tricorner hats and the constant invocation of the founding fathers. Entertaining because Jefferson, for instance, would be horrified by the American economy in its relatively sane 1950s guise, let alone the cannibalistic Darwinism of Obama's US. It's been a while since my US history classes, but I recall that Jefferson regarded independence as the essence of liberty. In the 1770s, that meant a nation of farmers and tradesmen who owned their own means of production and were beholden to no man - pretty much the antithesis of a system that demands citizens sell their labour for the best price that a remote and inhuman market determines. The Tea Partiers' free market patter would be barely distinguishable from joyful demands for their own enslavement to the great leaders in whose names they invoke them. As the great philosopher Blade once said, some motherf***ers are always tryin' to ice-skate uphill. I'm a huge fan of democracy, and one of the running themes of this blog has been that, if people know what they want, then they deserve to get it good and hard. So, cheer up! Que sera, sera. Okay, so the Tea Party's peasant revolt for the aristocracy is a genuine, bathetic tragedy for Americans. It's still bloody hilarious for the rest of us.
