'It's a lion! It's huge!' See Concept Art For A Proposed VOLTRON Movie!!

Published at: Sept. 16, 2010, 2:31 p.m. CST by merrick

Merrick here...
The folks over at JoBlo have two pieces of mighty impressive concept art for the long-rumored, sometimes-in-development VOLTRON movie. Click the sample below to jump to JoBlo to see both pics via embiggenable versions.
If I'm understanding the concept directly, this art is actually part of pitch process aimed at getting the full-blown movie up and running. Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (SAHARA, the forthcoming CONAN movie) are said to be scripters on the project for the moment. Remember when some folks thought CLOVERFIELD was actually a VOLTRON film in disguise?

It's certainly time the Voltron mythos got its due! I'd prefer if they kept an entiely alien setting and feel, but the art seems to imply a story where Voltron's compelled to visit earth (much like the awful TF series).

Totally loved reading that title. I was one of many that spent so much time going through that first teaser of Cloverfield. Frame by frame, studying the audio. Can't say I was one that thought it was "Lion" but I still loved all the mystery. I will always wish it was actually about Cthulu though.

Should have made this instead of Transformers

    by Bass Ackwards

Transformers seems to show studios aren't willing to greenlight a big fx project where the robots are actually the main characters, should have just done this one instead, get the giant robot action and the studios can be happy with their Shia LeBoufs or whomever being the pilots/stars.

  • Sept. 16, 2010, 3:20 p.m. CST

I like the overall look of it

    by lv_426

Could be cool if it retains this feel and atmosphere in the final film, and most importantly has a good script. Transformers films were kinda a waste of all that tech and action because the writing was just not that good.<P>It has been awhile since I've seen or been involved with anything Voltron, but when I was a wee lad I was a fan of the cartoon and had the toys. I don't recall if they ever set any of the stories on Earth or not. It has been such along time. Either way, setting it on Earth makes it feel like it is trying to be Transformers' bastard brother. Seems like it might be a wiser choice to set it on alien worlds instead so they can distance Voltron from the Transformers in the audience's eyes.

spidercoz - Lucas killed Space Opera????

    by lv_426

Well, there was a little film called Avatar that did okay at the box office last winter. It could technically fall under the sub-genre of "space opera" (technically it is more of a planetary romance, but no one uses that term anymore so space opera works).<P>So I'd say space opera films can stick around for a while.

    Voltron Is A Silly Project

    by Media Messiah

And there has been no forward progress since? Among its many lists of faults is the following. Rapper/singer Pharrell Williams was listed as producer of the film (with no background in film to guide him), and its script sounded like a mess, having no resemblance to the cartoon, other than the robots and some character names? I think it, the whole project, is a silly idea at best--as it is proposed, based upon very weak source material. Could it make money? Years, but if I was to rework it, I would make it as its source material would suggest, I would fashion it to be like Star Wars--as the show was a messy rip-off of Star Wars, to begin with.

    What...the HELL?

    by Grimmjow Jeagerjaques

That shit looks fucking ridiculous. I kinda dig the Robeast design but voltron itself looks like absolute shit. When I saw the Voltron thumbnail I thought that pic was of another robeast but it when I blew it up it was fucking Voltron. ARE YOU SERIOUS?!! And the red lion can't connect to Voltron's shoulder by flying to the connection spot, it needs something physically pull itself up on? Whoever came up with that idea is a retard. I sincerely hope that if this thing gets made, the producers will ditch the Bayformers wannabe designs for Voltron & the lions and try to come up with something that actually respects the source material. NO I am not suggesting they do a 1 to 1 conversion of the original designs in CGI. But you can't tell me that what we've just seen is "the best anyone can do and whoever doesn't get behind that idea is a fanboy loser". Remember that Gaiking concept trailer? Whether that was real or not, it was an awesome direction to take the material, it just needed a little more color if I remember correctly. THAT is what Voltron's design philosophy should be. Anyone who says "there's no way that will work for Voltron" is INSANE. No one's said that yet and hopefully no one in this Talkback will, hopefully. I'm praying whoever helms this thing actually gives the show a good watch, and not freak out over aspects of the source material or overanalyze and make poor adaptation decisions based on that. And base the music off the original score please. The show may be kinda cheezy but the score is badass. Be nice if Robert Rodriguez ends up helming this. I think he'd kick ass with it.

Solving the legal problems is a Robotech movie litmus test

    by Royston Lodge

I think solving the legal problems surrounding Macross should be seen as a litmus test for predicting if the Robotech movie will be any good.<p> Considering the amount of money it would require to produce a GOOD Robotech movie, if they go ahead and make one without any of the elements from Macross it shows that they are more interested in throwing together something quick and cheap than they are in making the proverbial "good" live-action Robotech movie.<p> If, on the other hand, their goal is to make the best possible live-action Robotech movie, then resolving the legal problems should really be one of the least complicated parts of the process.

All in all, I don't think the future looks good for geek movies.

    by Royston Lodge

Look, recent box office history shows that movies that cater specifically to pop culture geeks are not good investments:<p> Scott Pilgrim, Kick-Ass, Watchmen, etc, didn't do great at the box office even though most viewers think they were really good movies. <p> (In this rant, I'm not including geek flicks that just plain suck, like Wolverine or Fantastic Four, etc. I'm only talking about GOOD geek movies that don't make money for some reason.)<p> Meanwhile the Twilight series makes shit loads of cash despite being load of shit movies.<p> There have been quite a few articles published about why "geek flicks" don't do well at the box office, regardless of how good they are. Here's one example:<p> http://tinyurl.com/3xaua4y<p> When a "geek flick" DOES buck the trend and ends up making money, the pundits say something like "it transcended it's built-in niche market and connected with a wider audience." Examples could include stuff like Nolan's Batman flicks, AbramsTrek, Iron Man, 300, Sin City, etc.<p> That argument suggests that maybe a geek flick can only make money if it doesn't stick to the source material too closely? But I dunno if I buy that idea since what in Iron Man made it "more than just an Iron Man movie"? And one could also argue that Batman Forever was just as "true" to the source material as The Dark Knight was, if you cherry-pick the source material from the darker modern comics or the lighter pre-Crisis comics.<p> Or take the Transformers movies. They started with source material that's perfect for a "geek flick", made sure the movies sucked ass, and STILL made shit loads of money. So how does that fit into this whole thesis? I dunno! ;-)<p> DEVIL'S ADVOCATE MODE = ON<p> On the other hand, there are other articles that show that these sorts of movies make lots of money outside of the box office numbers. Kick-Ass was a big deal for Lions Gate in DVD sales and iTunes downloads:<p> http://tinyurl.com/24y5bat<p> DEVIL'S ADVOCATE MODE = OFF<p> So, at the end of the day, so I think Robotech (or Voltron) movies can make money?<p> Probably not, and if they do they'll probably have to change the back-story too much for the geeks to really enjoy them.<p> I think the source material is simply too obscure to break through into the consciousness of the non-geek moviegoer. Transformers and Batman are not niche geek properties. Virtually everybody knows something about them. Not nearly as many people know anything about Robotech or Voltron. So the built-in name recognition really isn't there.<p> Even with production values on par with the Transformers movies, I simply cannot see Voltron making a splash with the average moviegoing public. I also don't see any studio giving a Voltron movie the same resources that Michael Bay has at his disposal, so the movie's probably going to suck anyways.<p> With Robotech, I COULD be a LITTLE more optimistic. The story, the characters, and the vehicle designs are generic enough that the lack of name recognition shouldn't really be that big a problem. In fact, it could be a benefit since fewer people would have pre-conceived notions about it.<p> It's basically cool-looking fighter jets, cool-looking robots, and cool-looking spaceships, with a basic "invasion and defense of Earth" storyline. The stumbling block would be the design of the Zentraedi (or whatever villains they choose), since I don't think giant green humanoids would look very good in live-action.<p> But still, I'm pessimistic that any studio would give a Robotech movie the budget and resources it needs to be done really well. It'll end up being done on-the-cheap, like the way the budgets for subsequent Narnia movies have been reduced.<p> If it does get made, I see Robotech following the same general path that the XMen movies took.<p> I hope I'm wrong, of course.

    Michael Bay RUINED Voltron.

    by MST3KPIMP

The idea of a Voltron project sounds cool if for nothing more than an alternative to the crappy t-formers films. Trouble is they will be under pressure from the studio to make it look & feel like Transformers which will ultimatly prevent a unique Voltron movie from being made so it will essentialy be just another Transformers movie. So in a sense Michael Bay has ruined TWO franchises.

  • Sept. 16, 2010, 7:46 p.m. CST

So Megatron will be playing Voltron?

    by Violator90

Damn! I guess the people pitching this thing liked Bayformers that much to actually copy the design for Voltron. As some people already mentioned, that looks horrible. But those are just concepts hopefully they change it before any production happens--IF it happens at all.

  • Sept. 16, 2010, 7:47 p.m. CST

    Shitty, shitty, shitty design

    by smackfu

While the very existence of Voltron movie concept art is awesome, the people who are going to be in charge of this film need to realize something. Robot designs where every inch of the robot is a tangled mess of twisty, gnarly metal looks LIKE FUCKING SHIT. Go watch Transformers 1 & 2 and just absorb exactly how shitty, stupid, and ineffectual it looks to have twisty random metal all over the place in your robot design. The Voltron design already exists. If you want to make it more realistic looking, do it with the textures, and improving the details, not by making it look like Voltron exploded and was put back together without the manual.

  • Sept. 16, 2010, 8:01 p.m. CST

Damn, that's right Votron was on another planet.

    by The Founder

I had forgotten that, but you can bet Hollywood is gonna change that. The lions will probably be hidden on earth until the day came where 5 humans will be some sort of chosen ones to save the planet from an alien threat or some such premise.

  • Sept. 16, 2010, 8:04 p.m. CST

I agree they should not look like Bay TFs, but.....

    by The Founder

    Ugh,,,

    by catlettuce4

Looks like one of those sculptures made of old junk. I would not be opposed to an updating of the design, but it's got to remain true to the spirit of the real Voltron. This design misses the mark.

Defender of the Universe? That's not gonna work today.

    by The Founder

Yeah that tagline has to be changed. Unless theirs an army or corps of Voltron bots all over the universe then it seems an impossible task to place on a lone team. Maybe defender of Earth will be the new one.

Updates aren't the enemy BAD UPDATES are...

    by Grimmjow Jeagerjaques

As far as realism goes, fine, don't make it look like a toy was scanned into the computer but it needs to look like freakin' VOLTRON, not an erector set or a robot zombie. Once again, see the Gaiking trailer for an example of how to do these things RIGHT. People that can't deal with the robots bearing a resemblance to the original designs (and yes I get what some of you are saying, there's nothing wrong with updates if they're done right) need to go watch a RomCom or brainless kids flick or something instead of getting insulted when the original designs are updated in a way that doesn't piss of the people who actually know the series.

  • Sept. 16, 2010, 9:57 p.m. CST

Actually, the Voltron Script reviewed by Latino Review..

    by ganymede3010

Said that the movie took place in post apocolyptic New York. That concept art is very accurate. Supposedly, that script was trashed. However, it's evident that they kept some parts of it.

  • Sept. 16, 2010, 10:26 p.m. CST

I just read the Latino Review article of the old script...

    by Grimmjow Jeagerjaques

I hope to God they don't use that. Apparently the lions oh excuse me Lionbots, are made out of garbage or salvage or something. Yes it does take place in New York. I'm from New York and this doesn't even excite me. I can deal with the different ethnicities if you can do it without screwing up the essence of the character (hint, not like Catwoman or Daredevil) but this just seems heavy handed and excessive. The script makes it seem like the main and background characters are going to break into a rendition of "We Are The World" at any second.

Everyone here in the U.S. who grew up

    by Dennis_Moore

in the 80's knows what Voltron is. Even my girlfriend. It's not a niche property. While sometimes these things make a lot of money even when they are terrible, a la Bayformers, they'd make more if they do them right. Geek excitement and approval over faithfulness to the original concept and design added to the public's memory of this cartoon would equal even more money than they would've made on name recognition alone. Imagine if the two TF live-actioners had been everything you'd ever hoped. They would've doubled their money.

    by JT Kirk

What in the flying fuck in the face is this monstrosity? Voltron isn't fucking skeletal intertwined nonsense the way Bay's Transformers have ruined their looks. It's also not supposed to be on Earth! And it's not supposed to be THAT fucking big! Why the fuck do they have to change shit just for change's sake? They can never keep shit like scale or design aesthetic with these things anymore, instead squatting a massive dump on top of the very essences of these projects. Just go away, go fuck with something else instead since you haven't a goddamned clue what this project is about. I mean, Jesus Christ, how do you miss the giant "V" on Voltron's chest?!?

Not caring for aesthetics but looks more "real"

    by VAwitch

Similar to Bay-verse TFs - they look kinda ugly compared to the animation, BUT I will give him props that he tried to make them at least LOOK like various parts in car mode exist in robot mode.<P><P>That lion looks to be in a similar vein. Robotic lion built to be part of a larger whole. I loved Lion-Voltron back in the day, but even then noticed the simplistic 'engineering' :) <P><P>It'd be nice if they ever get this thing off the ground. Imagi did an awesome job w/ TMNT, and hopefully Battle of the Planets/Gatchaman. Perhaps they should do Voltron.

  • Sept. 17, 2010, 8:59 a.m. CST

    Two versions of Voltron

    by I_Snake_Plissken

Two different version of Voltron, one with the lions and one where Voltorn was built by 20-30 smaller vehicles. In the second scenario, I always wondered what would have happened if the guy driving the piece that formed the thigh hit the snooze button that day (all of a sudden Voltron has no leg). Also, whoever was driving the foot had to be shitting a brick the whole time - I seriously don't think his small vehicle could sustain the amassed weight of Voltron - that guy was probably spending the whole fight looking up at the creaking roof of his vehicle and shitting bricks.
