Series Coming!?

Merrick here...
Likely bringing a close to 16 years of rumor and speculation, and almost certainly confounding Tom Arnold's tireless insistence that a theatrical sequel to the 1994 James Cameron / Arnold Schwarzenegger epic TRUE LIES would eventually happen, looks like we'll see more of Harry and Helen Tasker after all...but on the small screen. Seems Team Cameron and 20th Century Fox Television have pulled together a series adaptation of TRUE LIES and are getting ready to shop it to networks. René Echevarria (Executive Producer of CASTLE, THE 4400, and Cameron's short-lived DARK ANGEL series - he was also a writer/producer on STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE) will function as writer/showrunner, and is Executive Producing alongside Lightstorm's Rae Sanchini and Jon Landau.
The progenitor feature film made well north of $378 million dollars globally, and has remained very high on the list of projects Cameron fans hoped to see the filmmaker one day follow-up on. More details can be found over at Deadline, HERE.

True Lies is the last great action movie. Seriously.

    Great Movie, Too Much Waltzing

    by Autodidact

I rate the opening chase sequence with the bathroom shootout and horseback chase among the best action sequence ever put together. And all the rest of the action in the movie is also top-notch, if played for laughs a bit much (but hell I'm not James Cameron am I?) <p>I'm so sick of that damn waltz music by the end of True Lies. That's my one big complaint about it. Aside from that it's just a kick-ass movie, basically Cameron distilling the essence of "summer popcorn movies" into concentrated form.

    I agree Kwizatz

    by Autodidact

Speed, True Lies, and Die Hard With a Vengeance were pretty much the swan song of "real" action movies, using the perfect blend of location shooting, physical models, CG, all brought together with now perfected digital compositing and rig removal techniques. Something about that mix of techniques creates images that feel more real than most of today's predominantly overly-enhanced-with CG stunts and action set pieces. <p>By 1996 a lot of movies were starting to feel lazy or inconsistent in their use of digital and CG.. Eraser's crocodiles and Mission Impossible's tunnel sequence being good examples. <p>Occasionally we get a Children of Men or District 9 where the director understands how to balance techniques to give action a properly visceral feel while also optimizing the frames per $ of the FX budget.

Agreed With The Rest of You About Dushku

    by Media Messiah

Although she messed-up on Dollhouse, I think that screw-up, will give her a much needed attitude adjustment, and force her to really start acting again. Yes, the series should follow Harry's (Arnold's) daughter, as played by Dushku. I'd watch it, if they kept continuity-up via her casting, and guested Jamie Lee Curtis every once and a while, as he mother. The show should probably be about the disapearance of Dushku's character's secret agent dad, Harry, and her attempts, as a secret agent, to find him, as the show's C-story (side story), and ongoing...McGuffin. The show, however, should largely be a stand alone episode format, the way Dollhouse should have been. They should also use Tom a tasking officer--and gadget guy, for comedy relief.

    People Thinking "Undercovers" is PC

    by Hipshot

Is why I give the series no chance at all. How many network dramatic hour-long series have EVER succeeded with non-white leads? Maybe "The Unit" (a series is a success if it lasts more than two seasons). Maybe "DS-9"? Both seriously ensembles with plenty of white folks for white audiences to groove to. That's like, 1%, perhaps of the total "successful" dramatic shows. Probably less. Folks who look at black people and think they simply MUST have been hired because of Political Correctness rather than talent...or statistical probability...or just because the unusual is interesting...well, there are tons of those people, and "Undercover" has little chance because of it. Want to know how good the series actually will be? 1) Talk to white folks, get their average response. 2) Talk to black folks, get THEIR average response. 3) Split the difference. There you'll have it.

    by Turd_Has_Risen_From_The_Grave

This obviously isn't going to feature Arnold, and probably even Cameron's involvement will be minimal, rather like that Dark Angel series (which I've never seen). <p>True Lies 2 writes itself, even though it would likely get compared to crap like Mr and Mrs. Smith, although it would be much better. And it'd be great in 3D, too. Get Eliza Dushku to replicate her mother's striptease this time out - that'd be a winner in 3D. The old script reports of TL 2 sounded good; something about a biochemist held hostage by Chinese communists (probably wouldn't go down too well nowadays, either), and the opening scenes involved the Channel Tunnel getting flooded.<p>I don't think Cameron cares all that much for True Lies, though - it's kind of the black sheep of his filmography, and it's lightheartedness and politics, at least to the superficially minded who don't get that it's just a romp, are in contrast to everything else he's ever done. Still, it was a great old school action movie, the very last of them in fact, and the last 'event' Arnold film, too.

"True Lies is one of the dumbest, most insipid movies of the last 20 years. it's pathetically sexist, xenophobic and just unbelievably retarded on almost every level."<p>No, it isn't. It's a clever, and fully aware, send-up of 60's James Bond sexist machismo, 80's action films, and screwball romantic comedies, re-contextualized through a post-modern perspective. It's actually a successful stab at what Arnold was trying and failed to do with Last Action Hero.

  • Sept. 13, 2010, 9:06 p.m. CST

    Oh, god the PC argument

    by BadMrWonka

I don't care at ALL if something's not PC. if it's funny, or entertaining in how it's being provocative. but being un-PC for the sake of being un-PC is boring. and what's worse, being un-PC without being tongue in cheek because you actually ARE being racist, sexist, etc. is even more pathetic.<p>True Lies completely dehumanizes the vague islamic bad guys, and it ushered in an era of "them" that we hadn't seen since the vaguely Jewish "thems" of the early horror films that preyed upon people's latent anti-semitism. it was the first movie that tried to get your balls to swell by watch Schwarzenegger blowing up any brown skinned person he could find like you'd pop tic-tacs.<p> from John Simon's review: "The enemy here--ill-defined, all-purpose Arabs--is a bunch of gibbering idiots, playing with their expensive weaponry in Three Stooges fashion."<p> and the entire plot of him lying to his wife, treating her like a complete rube, then jealously following her, having her arrested and handcuffed and terrorized all to prove his own power over her, manipulating her, forcing her to strip for him as a phony character, it's just completely pathetic. it's not a satire, it's just adolescent fantasy bullshit on the big screen.<p> but people still remember it fondly because "bridge go boom real good!" <p> I urge you to rewatch that shit show, and if you still think it holds up, more power to you. but I expect a little more from the glowing screen. <p> "women, can't live with em, can't kill em!" yeah, great cinema, right there. fucking pathetic that people remember this film fondly...

  • Sept. 14, 2010, 1:10 a.m. CST

    by BadMrWonka

unless it's a Kung Fu movie, when all of the baddies are reduced to "vaguely defined humans that aren't white" it's boring as shit to me. and that includes commando.<p>the great white hero mowing down minorities was boring in the 80's, boring in the 90's, and it'll be boring forever more. <p>there's a reason when people talk about truly great action movies, no one mentions True Lies. most of you guys have a soft spot for it because it was part of your (and my) childhood, but that doesn't mean it's not seriously flawed. <p>and to be fair, it's not limited to action movies. white heroes solving black problems is a horrendous cliche as well. Crash? Dangerous Minds? it's ludicrous.<p>and not for nothing, but the thing I found most ridiculously mean-spirited and un-fun was the way Schwarzenegger's character treated his wife throughout. he lies to her their whole marriage, and when she tries to have a life, he terrorizes her? give me a break.<p> and here's<br>the break you asked for.<p>get it? html humor!

  • Sept. 14, 2010, 4:48 a.m. CST

    by Ghostball

...defintetly inclined to agree with you - only problem is, if we really went all the way with our concern for "fairness" and "representation" re minorities etc, we'd have no movies at all! <P>Most actors who generally get baddie roles would never get the good guy hero role, simply on the basis of their genetically inherited looks, and most women will be lucky to be a passerby on a set, if they're not at least "reasonably" beautiful. Hollywood producers and casting directors are businessmen, not social workers - fortunately occasionally brave decisions are made (usually without them noticing) that actually contribute to the quality of the film, rather than detract. <P>Most "popcorn" movies are certainly eugenicist propaganda where it is quite clear who the filmmakers consider fit to survive - or who they think WE do. Cameron's stuff is fucking rife with examples of what I mean. Still, before True Lies, he was truly badass, PC or no.

    Eliza Dushku -- YES

How awesome would that be? Make it a "sequel" series about Eliza following in her dad's footsteps... maybe he "died" mysteriously and she's trying to get to the bottom of it... have Jamie Lee Curtis pop in for the occasional SWEEPS episode as Spy-Mama -- then down the line Arnold may be free to cameo -- Dushku discovers he wasn't dead --- big conspiracy. etc. All the comments about how the film is racist truly make me laugh. You just didn't get it. It's also hardly misogynistic. Helen was a truly amazing character and the film deals with both Harry and her growth as a couple extraordinarily well. If anything I recall most of the men in the movie behaving like pigs and mostly getting punished for it.
