Fox Searchlight Acquires Terrence Malick's TREE OF LIFE, Announces TBD 2011 Release!

Published at:  Sep 09, 2010 1:39:15 PM CDT

Beaks here...

After almost a year of uncertainty, Terrence Malick's long-anticipated TREE OF LIFE finally has a solid distributor and a release strategy.

According to indieWire, Fox Searchlight has acquired the rights to Malick's fifth feature from the all-but-shuttered Apparition Films. They plan to release the film at some point in 2011 - which has nothing to do with the film's quality, and everything to do with the company's promising fall slate of Mark Romanek's NEVER LET ME GO, Danny Boyle's 127 HOURS, Darren Aronofsky's BLACK SWAN and Tony Goldwyn's CONVICTION. Even if one or more of these films fail to connect with Academy voters, there's no way they'll throw money at another awards campaign this year.

Fox Searchlight Presidents Stephen Giula and Nancy Utley issued this joint statement about their acquisition: "Terrence Malick has crafted a deeply moving, keenly observed and magisterial film. Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and the entire cast’s performances are simply amazing. This is a signature film by a signature filmmaker and we are proud to be releasing it."

The conventional wisdom seems to be that TREE OF LIFE will debut at next year's Cannes Film Festival, but I've a feeling Fox Searchlight would rather begin rolling the film out at the late summer Venice/Telluride/Toronto Film Festivals. Or maybe they'll shock us all and take it to Sundance. I just want to see the movie now-ish.

I was really excited when I heard about this movie but the longer they push it for release, the more dissapointing its going to be. 20 bucks says that the movie would end up sucking because everybodies expectations are going to be really high.

    Fucking disaster for film fans

    by the_motorcycle_boy

So, Fox is delaying it so it doesn't challenge their existing Oscar bait films and so they can prepare a proper campaign for it? We've been waiting for this for 3-4 years already, I don't think you can raise people's anticipation much higher, the opposite effect is more likely.

The Oscars aren't worth their salt anyway. The prizes are typically defined by how big your advertising budget is rather than the actual quality of your film. Most academy members get an illegal cop-- sorry -- a screener DVD anyway, so why don't they just release it in December/January. This is cinematic torture!

    MALICK

    by the_choppah

Im sure this one will be yet another three hours of ponderous, languid, stupefying attempted filmic "poetry" like the rest of the suddenly and unjustly revered Terry Malick. He's a terrible, lunkheaded writer, and his trite, limp visual "style" is girded by unusually good cinematographers. People give Jim Cameron shit for laying on the exposition thick and deep, but who holds Malick to this standard for his gloopy, ever-present narration? Profundity porn. Next. CHOPPED

Hey dude, what have you make? Can I see some of your work? If you haven't made anything, how can you possibly attempt to criticizes anyone? Malick is an absolute masterful filmmaker of the highest order. I bet you have no idea how hard it is to make anything. And if so, bring it on.

    Mallick and Kubrick

    by starway

Both master artists and both brilliant. But I would never bankroll them. (Well, you can't bankroll Kubrick anymore... but you know what I mean).

I wonder if Warners is still writing off their losses on "Eyes Wide Shut" or if they didn't really care about the loss because they simply wanted another auteur piece in their library?

And not just because of trees. These long-gestating movies that try to be about Life may flop with critics and audiences, but if it weren't for the crazed visionaries, movies wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Remember when we didn't have to wait YEARS to see a movie?

    by jawsfan

I miss the days when the studios didn't routinely delay releasing films for such a long time, no matter what the reason. Or maybe they always have done that but the Internet Age gives us too much info (re: anticipation) too early in the game. Shit, it seems like we've been waiting 6 years since hearing about Tron: Legacy. Just release the damn thing already!

"What is this film supposed to be about?"

    by tomandshell

About three hours. But it will feel longer, because it will be hypnotic and poetic and magisterial, etc. During the voiceover narration scenes, the critics will stroke their chins and nod, slowly and knowingly. My grandma won't "get it." I'll eventually pick up the Blu-ray and admire the cinematography.
