Sounds Like There's A Potentially Badass Making Of 2001 Documentary On The Way, From An VFX Genius!! See Video!!

Merrick here...
In my mind, Douglas Trumbull is a God of Cinema - his work profoundly influenced how I perceived the potential of film (both as an art form and storytelling medium), and has indelibly etched my consciousness with spectacular images that I recall always and will never forget. He was instrumental in fueling my love of movies, and critical in shaping my imagination. In many regards, he is an invaluable component in my becoming the helpless Geek that I am today, and these accolades can not be overstated. Despite my personally having installed Mr. Trumbull atop such a lofty pedestal, the reality of life, the world, and the entertainment industry is that ...today...his name probably isn't as recognizable as it used to be. Different decades...different pictures...different perceptions. So, for those who don't know, Trumbull was the visionary FX guru behind many of the most relevant genre films of the 60s, 70s, and 80s - most of which still endure to this day: BLADE RUNNER, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (with John Dykstra), CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, SILENT RUNNING (which he also directed), Robert Wise's ANDROMEDA STRAIN, and...perhaps most significantly (a qualification certainly open to debate), 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Keeping all of this in mind, it's with no small amount of enthusiasm that I've learned Trumbull is currently piecing together a new documentary chronicling the making of 2001. It's called 2001: BEYOND THE INFINITE - THE MAKING OF A MASTERPIECE. Sounds like they're planning some fascinating insights into filming, and unique approaches to the documentary format. You can check out a (aggravatingly unembeddable) teaser for the documentary HERE, via a video which appears to be a pitch reel of some sort. The playback won't spool-up automatically, though - a promo for another project will jump in when you click that link. Just scroll down the page past one or two titles, find "2001: A Space Odyssey - Documentary", hit the 'play video' arrow in the tiny little embed window, and the reel will launch full screen in the large pane at the top of the page. This could very well end up being an artistically relevant film on its own merits - we may be looking at the beginnings of something kinda special here. We'll keep you apprised as we learn more. Thanks to the always awesome Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits for the heads up about this.
