The Batmobile On The Set Of The ARTHUR Remake...

Published at:  Sep 09, 2010 9:25:44 AM CDT

Merrick here...

We'd previously learned that a Batmobile would be making an appearance in the forthcoming ARTHUR remake. My understanding of the set-up for this is that Russell Brand's wealthy title character gets bored and decides to buy a Batmobile as a man toy (or something to that effect) - we'll see if that's how the gag actually plays out on screen.

Keeks, an AICN reader, chanced across the picture's filming while walking his dog - spotting the Schumacher-era Batmobile sitting on the strret, waiting for filming. Keeks sucks. When I take my dog for a walk? We get strafed by a Stealth Skunk. When he takes his dog out? He sees a fucking Batmobile. Granted, it's evidently from Schumacher's BATMAN FOREVER - which automatically makes it not necessarily the coolest Batmobile Keeks might've stumbled across, but it's a Batmobile nonetheless and I'm a tad jealous.

Here's Keeks' introductory missive, followed by some snapshots he was kind enough to grab for us & send in. We really do appreciate your efforts, Keeks. Thanks a ton.

I live in Queens, right near the Kaufman Astoria studio, where the "Arthur" remake has been shooting recently. I haven't seen anything really interesting until this morning. Imagine my surprise when I went to walk my dog and found myself staring at the Batmobile! I believe it's the one from BATMAN FOREVER. Anyway I was able to snap a couple pics from my balcony.

Daily Mail has posted some other pics of the Batmobile in action - looks like they may be from the same location? - you can find them HERE.

Schumaker's are gaudy and neon, like the movies. This one looked especially ridiculous in the movies, I remember seeing all the parts jiggling about in the movie like it was a kit car sloppily pasted together.

Gosh. The second most ridiculous batmobile ever made captured on location....again. Why is this news? It was revealed weeks ago when someone else saw it sitting, on location, during earlier filming of the same flick. Shortly afterwords we got pics of Russell Brand in Arthur's Batman costume (also from the previous 'Bat film' era). Sorry, I'm interested in seeing this film, I just don't care about yet another story of someone stumbling upon something we've already found out about...at least not this particular something. Those films, specifically Shumacher's, were beyond stupidity. Burton's were tolerable. In fact, I actually liked those two back then when they were the closest thing to the real (comic book) Batman that had been made. In hindsight, not so much. Burton's world is neat looking, but ultimately looks like a set...it looks like a self contained world where if you stepped outside the city limits, you'd stumble into infinite nothingness. Nolan's world seems like the real world.

It just cheapens Batman when they have dumb set pieces make cameos in stupid movies! So someone can go, "Oh look it's the Batmobile! That's so funny!" That's not humor! If you can't write humor then get a writer that can! A shortcut to humor is not acceptable just because the audience doesn't know the difference! It's not even the real Batman, it's the, "Gee Batman, how we gonna stop Riddler this time!" Batman!

    We just have to accept...

    by nico_laos

... that this is a legitimate part of the Batman mythos. Batman stories --whether in comic books, TV, and film-- have always see-sawed in quality. Silver-age Batman stories sucked. In fact, most agree that the book really didn't start to take itself seriously until the late seventies... and really took off in the eighties. As for TV, only the DC Animation is worth a damn. And as for the movies? We've got the Nolan films. Yeah, many of you like the Burton films, and that's fine. But many of us (like me) think they suck ass. The truth is, when you've got an iconic character that has been around for so many decades... you're bound to get some shitty material. You can't just say, "That's not Batman," or ,"That's not the Batmobile," because it's something you don't like. That IS the fucking Batmobile. You have to take the bad with the good.... Otherwise, don't even waste your time.

I could give a nerd the actual Indiana Jones hat used in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and they'd piss themselves. Who fucking cares if it came from a shitty movie? It's Indiana's hat. I would agree, except I think what you describe about Burton's city seeming self-contained, as if nothing exists beyond it, is a strength and adds to the mood of the films, while the current Gotham (Chicago) feels too much like it is the real word (i.e. boring as a superhero city)

nico - poor examples, and here's why ...

    by lamerz

Your examples such as Indy's hat (KotCS) and Obi Wan's lightsaber (TPM)? Yes, any geek would piss themselves to have them despite the movie not being so hot. The reason why is that the design of the lightsaber and the hat were not part of the problems with either movie. Both look awesome. No geek complained about Indy's hat or Obi Wan's lightsaber in either movie. The movie's had issues for other reasons. The props still looked fucking awesome.Schumacher's abomination on the other hand is exactly representative of major issues with his movies. Terrible design that craps all over what came before it, very little practicality, and just complete shit in general. I don't even remember Jaws 4 or Robocop 3, so I won't comment on those.

    Alright...

    by nico_laos

Good points all around. But for me... seeing this Batmobile out of the context of the rest of the poorly designed shit from Schumacher's sets seems kinda cool. The reason is simple. If I had never seen any of the Batman movies, or even heard of Batman... then I'd look at that car and say, "Fuck me, that's awesome!"

    That Batcave parking garage

    by dude_gimme_tabs

Was it in one of the Hush books where Batman says to Robin "We'll take the car." and Robin says "Which one?" - across a whole page spread of the Batcave, stretching back miles and miles with every single version of the Batmobile ever, from the 60's show onwards including all movie versions? Great panel.

I really wish they'd gone with Gervais instead of Brand.

I'm relieved it's not the real batmobile with Russell Brand

If I saw him and the real batmobile on the same screen in a movie. He would have to die. PERIOD.
