TNT Orders To Pilot A DALLAS Sequel!!
I am – Hercules!!
TNT just ordered a new crop of four pilots, and the one with the most brand recognition is a pilot for a sequel to “Dallas” focusing on the grown spawn of J.R. and Bobby Ewing.
The lady behind the remake is screenwriter Cynthia Cidre (“The Mambo Kings”), who was also behind CBS’ horrible “Cane,” which many described as the Cuban-American “Dallas.” (Nestor Carbonell played J.R. to Jimmy Smits' Bobby.)
CBS' old "Dallas" ran for 14 seasons. I'm guessing this one will not. "The Fugitive," "The Love Boat," "Fantasy Island," "Family Affair," "Cupid," "Bionic Woman," "Knight Rider," "Night Stalker," "Dragnet," "Melrose Place" and even "Battlestar Galactica" have taught us that series revivals tend to be short-lived. Though I suppose the low-rated "V" and "90210" are still clinging to life. CBS has "Hawaii Five-O" this fall. The CW has "Nikita." NBC is still developing a "Rockford Files" re-do. So we'll see.
I suppose “Dallas” has a better chance of going to series if Fox does well this autumn with “Lone Star,” which many are describing as “the new ‘Dallas’.” “Lone Star” follows “House” on Mondays, so the success of “Lone Star” is not beyond the realm of possibility.
TNT and TBS also just greenlit three pilots about people who solve mysteries.
Press release:
TNT and TBS are going into production on four series pilots, including projects from such successful producers and writers as Dean Devlin (TNT’s Leverage); Marco Schnabel (TNT’s The Librarian movie trilogy); Kenneth Biller and Mike Sussman (Star Trek: Voyager); Allan Loeb (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps); and Cynthia Cidre (The Mambo Kings).
“These pilots reflect our enthusiasm for relatable but complex everyman heroes, showcased in exciting storytelling environments,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM).“They also reflect our reliance on extraordinary talent to deliver on the promise of quality series television. The writers of these projects bring great intelligence, heart and humor to their work. We are confident each of these projects would be a terrific addition to our original series line-up.”
The following are the three pilots in the works for TNT:
PERCEPTION (working title) – Executive producer Kenneth Biller (Star Trek: Voyager, Legend of the Seeker) and co-executive producer Mike Sussman (Star Trek: Voyager) penned the pilot for this drama about Dr. Geoffrey Pierce, an eccentric neuroscientist who uses his unique outlook to help the federal government solve complex cases. With an intimate knowledge of human behavior and a masterful understanding of the mind, this quirky, crime-solving doctor pulls lessons from an odd and imaginative view of the world. This pilot is being produced by ABC Studios. The project was part of TNT’s 2009 development slate.
Untitled Allan Loeb Project – Executive producer/writer Allan Loeb, whose recent screenplays include The Switch and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, has crafted this drama based on The Rabbit Factory by novelist Marshall Karp. Recently widowed police Detective Mike Lomax and his newly married partner, Terry Biggs, delve into a world of mystery, intrigue and occasional hijinks. Lomax, who continues to receive humorous and heartfelt weekly letters from his wife a year after her death, tries to navigate the singles world while also maintaining his pedigree as one of L.A.’s finest. This pilot comes to TNT from Lionsgate Television. It was was originally featured on TBS’ development slate announced at the Turner networks’ upfront presentation in May.
DALLAS – Executive producer Cynthia Cidre, writer of the acclaimed film The Mambo Kings and creator/executive producer of the TV series Cane, has crafted an update of the long-running series about the Ewings of Southfork, whose betrayals, jealousies and passions have made them famous. The story focuses on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers JR and Bobby Ewing, who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance. This project, based upon the iconic series created by David Jacobs, comes to TNT from Warner Horizon Television.
TBS is moving forward on the following pilot:
BRAIN TRUST (working title) – Dean Devlin, executive producer of TNT’s hit series Leverage, is teaming up with Marco Schnabel (TNT’s The Librarian movie trilogy) for this pilot about Detective Billy Doyle, whose career and life have hit rock bottom after he accidentally ends his partner’s career. Doyle’s life gets turned around, however, when a recent murder case gets unexpected and unconventional help from three hyper-smart geniuses from a private think tank. If Doyle can survive the chaos and keep these new partners in line, they just may be the antidote to resurrect his career and, ultimately, his life. BRAIN TRUST (working title) is being produced for TBS by Devlin’s Electric Entertainment.

Dallas was too big a show, the actors too linked to their roles then and since. New viewers won't be interested in a new Dallas and the older fans of the original will tune out in disgust when JR turns around in his chair and Larry Hagman ain't the guy playing him. It's the same problem that the new Hawaii 5 O faces, and the Rockford Files as soon as it hits the screen. We were lucky BSG turned out so good and such a hit but these shows, just can't see the hope for them.
-
...John Bradshaw Layfield.
-
will people really be interested in oil tycoons
-
More like The Next Generation. From the way it's described, it looks like there is plenty of room for guest appearances from the original actors, ala Melrose Place (which could have worked if they had gone more over the top with it from the get-go).
-
Worked for Battlestar.
-
A reporting error that changes the game quite significantly IMO. It's not a remake at all.
-
I watched Dallas first-run from about season 2 until the end. It's a different world, we obviously have more choices than 4 networks here in the 21st century. This will be a minor blip on the TV radar that will get a round of bad reviews at it's premiere, then disappear after a short "season" of episodes. Do they REALLY think we're going to crowd around the teevee to see who shot JR...again? Too many quality choices in this world to waste time on this.
-
But then none of these networks are known for taking risks.
-
my DVD collection suggests otherwise
-
so uh, I don't know that I'd call that a failure, despite the iffy ending
-
...at least we can tell ourselves that it was just a dream.
-
I have to hear the logic behind that Herc. It ran just as long as it needed. Yes the last season felt a bit "last minute put together" and the ending will probably be argued over for years to come, but I'd hardly call it short lived.
-
WTF? Really? Is America really dumb enough to fall for all these show descriptions filled with "Quirky, zany, hijinks!" ? Fuck you Ted Turner. I hope a Tornado eats you.
-
I think he meant Galactica 1980?
-
I guess the movie never panned out. I remember not too long ago, they were planning a feature film with John Travolta playing J.R. Ewing.
-
That Star Wars Dallas vid is HILARIOUS. I haven't seen or heard the Dallas theme since it aired when I was a kid, but I immediately was brought back watching that. What a great job they did on that. Kudos to the makers. Love it.
-
Also, a show about an oil company in Texas with wealthy owners is totally relevant in 2010. This should be a 12 episode season series on cable that mines 14 seasons of the best stories but remakes them to have a darker edgier bent. Not this "sequel" shit that will be sure to feature bad actors and bootleg looking production values.
-
really? do we need more cop shows?
-
Larry Hagman plays J.R. in that commercial for solar power.
-
Fuck all of these dumbass producers who are incapable of original ideas.
-
not Battlestar. They're still making that stuff, did you know that? Star Trek also had a decent run as a relaunch, and Doctor Who is doing well too.

Jay Leno ‘Tonight Show’ Ratings Fall Below Conan's 2009 Numbers
by lock67ca
Why isn't Herc all over this story (in the Hollywood Reporter), since I know how much he loves Leno?
-
How was Battlestar SHORT LIVED!? The original lasted 2 seasons! The new one lasted 4!?
-
I am not really sure why, though.
-
"until Ronald Dickhead Moore fucked it up"
For your information Ron Moore was with the show SINCE THE BEGINNING
He was the reason for the "very successful remake of the original series" -
Fuck can't anybody come up with something original instead of ripping off old series/comics/films?
-
thought the bruhaha over who shot jr was hilariousim guessing in about 10 years, they will have totally run out of ideas and will start remaking shows like my mother the car
-
A. WHYYYYYYYYYYY?
B. Who cares?
C. Hollywood's out of ideas.
D. Raped my childhood.
E. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! -
airing of Saving Private Ryan?
-
call it DallA$$

Victoria Principal will wake up and find Patrick Duffy in the shower.

It's sad that kids today don't get that great family guy joke
by redbull_werewolf
That was some 80's pop culture shit right there, wasted on a generation that asked "why was the dad from step by step in the shower?"
-
At this point, will Hollywood remake every single Film or TV Show? How about giving an original idea a chance. The only thing I'm watching or waiting for is "The Event" or "Rubicon" it sounds like everything else is either remake, reboot, clone....Nothing new.
-
He played a great bad guy. JR is one evil motherfucker. I don't need no Dallas remake with some pussyboy actors or some worthless eye candy bitches.
-
Greatest short lived show I know of in recent years...
-
And that is why herc is Silent on the matter.
-
Very happy to see Dallas revived, I just wish the fucking media would stop calling it a remake, it's a revival- Sequel...NOT a remake!
The only problem I see with the new show is that no one can touch Larry Hagman's tricky performance. How he never won an Emmy is still infuriating, but JR's charm was that despite his nastiness, he was likable and at times, you sided with him, despite his shitty behavior. I just hope we don't get a Lucy-like character that never seems to fit in and distracts from th meat of the stories. I wonder if the Knots Landing kids will make an appearance? -
Sequel series!!!
-
FUCK THE COP SHOWS!
-
Love that helicopter!
-
and Borgnine
-
Dallas remake - Whatever. It could be good, but they'd be better off doing the posted Star Wars Dallas idea.
The other shows sound...not good. Mad Men is the reigning "Best Drama," and TNT responds with...more fucking cop shows? Also, the Devlin show doesn't sound like much of a comedy and I thought TBS was Turner's comedy station now? (BTW, while it's completely ridiculous, I do love Leverage). I don't know, I think USA's shows are better. When is Southland coming back? -
It's only off for 2 months.
-
Travolta as JR...? What happened to that bomb-in-waiting?
-
...then I'm all for it. :-P
