Live in Chicago? Capone has details on an early screening of HOWL, starring James Franco, with a directors' Q&A!!!
Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.
Next up on our September schedule is HOWL (which opened this year's Sundance Film Festival), a fascinating film from co-directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman concerning the early life and times of beat poet Allen Ginsberg (portrayed with startling authenticity by James Franco). The events center around the obscenity trial that a bookstore faced for carrying Ginsberg's now-legendary epic poem "Howl", but the film goes well beyond that story to tell a complete picture of Ginsberg's life. HOWL costars the likes of John Hamm, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeff Daniels, David Strathairn, Treat Williams, Bob Balaban, and many others. It's a fascinating work that even finds a way to incorporate some pretty shocking animation in the mix, and it's well worth your time to check it out.
I have 100 seats for Chicago-area AICN readers to a screening of HOWL, taking place this Tuesday, September 14 at 7:30pm at a theater in Chicago (the exact location will only be given to the winners). As a bonus, the co-directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, will be on hand for a post-screening Q&A. Epstein and Friedman, separately and together, have done some extraordinary documentary work, including THE CELLULOID CLOSET, THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK, and COMMON THREADS. Here's how to win:
Send me an email at HowlChicago@aintitcoolmail.com (please note the new email address) with the subject line "HOWL SCREENING". In the body of the email, all I need is your Name, and whether or not you're bringing a Guest (guests' names are not required). That's it. I'm keeping things pretty simple for this one. Winners will be contacted very soon.
Please keep in mind that this is not an exclusive AICN event, and is overbooked to make sure there is a full house for our guest. If you cannot arrive at this screening early, please do not enter. If there's even the slightest chance you'll have to back out of attending if you do win, don't enter. If you have a job that might make you late or unable to attend, or an ill/pregnant relative, or a temperamental significant other, or a scratchy throat, do not enter. Anyone not showing up without informing me ahead of time so I can fill their seats is no longer eligible for future screening contests.
Good luck, everyone! And thanks to Oscilloscope Pictures for making this happen and for bringing Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman to Chicago.

I just wanted to write that. And yes, I know this puts me in the company of Harry when Reloaded came out.

...I was hoping for some werewolf action, too, Fett. I've tried to get into On the Road and all that shit, but I just never connected to the whole Beat generation thing.
-
...back at Berlin Film festival. Still worth going if you like to hear or see Francos Ginsberg interpretation. But those 80ties MTV-style animations - jesus christ.
-
Late as always Harry!
-
Did not know that the two guys who did my favorite documentary also did this!
-
Willl Franco at least keep his shirt on???
-
... and it would take alot of prosthetics to make Franco look anything like him. That's the first red flag for this film. The second? Perhaps the fact that Ginsburg did things like using the Naropa Institute in Boulder, CO to lure male children for sex. I'll just wait for ON THE ROAD instead.
-
... just so there's no confusion.
-
why isn't he completely shunned by society?

Coppola's been trying to make that film since 1994. Even did a big stupid casting call when I was a freshman at NYU 16 years ago. Then they were gonna cast Brad Pitt as Dean Moriarty. Never saw the light of day and I think he still has the rights. This Ginsburg movie looks like it's trying to sell real Hipsterism to all these whiney, ugly glasses wearing PBR drinking pretenders. "I've seen the best minds of my generation driven to madness starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves down the gentrified streets at dawn looking for the perfect pair of skinny jeans."
-
... check IMDB for info you obviously haven't been privy to about OTR.
-
Honestly didn't know Walter Salles was doing this. Haven't read anything about it but of course that's cause I idiotically get my industry news from this site instead of reading the trades. Kristen Stewart as Dean Moriarty's flighty, moronic child bride, perfect casting.

Then did another one on him for a different class later on. He's a pretty interesting guy, and Howl and Kaddish were enjoyably disturbed.
