A Nifty Piece Of Concept Art From Peter Berg's Defunct DUNE Movie!!
Merrick here...
Comic artist and film conceptual artist Mark Simpson (aka "Jock") has some fun and interesting images over at his official website, one of them offering an intriguing glimpse into what almost was, or at least might've been.
Personally, I was really looking forward to seeing how Peter Berg adapted DUNE - which he's no longer working on (although Pierre Morel supposedly is). BUT, some conceptual art was rendered for Berg's version - at least one piece was by Jock, who worked with Berg on HANCOCK and who Berg has evidently taken to BATTLESHIP.
Here's an EMBIGGENABLE piece of concept art for a Sandworm, Berg style...

The pic originates HERE, where you can find other samples of Jock's work for different films.
Looks like he's working on the new JUDGE DREDD film (will they really just call it DREDD?). That oughta be something...

But that's a cool image. Give up on Dune, people. Let it live as a novel.
-
...they just need to make Tremors 5 with Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon. According to imdb, they both will be in a DTV sequel.
-
Berg would've made it a shaky-cam action film mess, like Clash of the Titans...And the concept art is pretty useless. Too stylized to be of any use during an actual production.
-
You are so hot right now, Merrick.
-
I thought he left that project. Loved him in Shocker btw
-
probably my favorite pure sci-fi novel of all time. The second is average at best, one of the most depressing novels ever written, vaguely interesting at moments. The 3rd on are glacier-paced tedious pretentious unreadable messes.
-
it's Space Opera, heavy on politics
-
The likes of which even god has never seen.
-
No, wait....
-
I've got students doing better work than that.
-
Really?
-
Its OK, but lacks the wow factor.
-
That's very 'Final Product'-ish, I'm sure.
-
that's rubbish!
-
So, it was just a concept? If you looked at Jock's other art it is all concept too, and it looks mighty cool. I like this Dune art.
-
I guess news is really slow these days.
-
i do not care about dune, the hobbit, and whatever that chtuluhulaloop monster is... those 3 stories or books or whatever always come up here and each time it does, i go "guess im not that much of a geek"
-
That is some shit that would take 15 minutes and it looks atrocious...I could have done some killer art for this flick!
http://www.tonytreloar.blogspot.com/ -
that is some very nice stuff, dude. I wish AICN would host more art-related contests here, because I'm sure these TB's are brimming with some seriously gifted artists. you've got my vote for being a concept artist on the "Mass Effect" film thats being thrown around, Mr. Treloar. as for the topic at hand, I know nothing about Dune but I always enjoy concept art. I do agree that the style seems kind of strange for trying to conceptualize a (seemingly important) visual element of the film, but I'm sure they would've elaborated further on the concept in due time.
-
now i wish i could find a graphic artist here to help make a logo or background for my blog... any takers? i pay in peanut butter
-
Berg is off this project, and that Morel is on it. At least Morel said he read the books, and wasn't going to make an action movie out of it.
-
I'm on the computer while she's watching Desperate Housewives. I'm listening as Kyle MacLachlan is imparting wisdom from his wheelchair. So I ask "So now that he's a crip, suddenly he's Yoda?"Her: "What do you expect from the Kwisatz Haderach?"
-
but im surprised it took so long for someone to question if i had another handle (i even brought it up during the lost tbs because i was supporting a "troll" by the name of lostboy). but seriously, im not. only yourSTEPDADDY and once was mr ahole ramirez (but i couldnt remember pwords or emal). im just a corny guy who likes peanut butter (who hopefully isnt a douchebag also).
-
am i as bad as rplocke? if so, ima need to stop posting as much...
-
Really like some of this guys stuff... In fact I would pay money for a nice print of his batman jumping from one roof to another.
-
That's verbatim the same thing you said about Blade Runner on another TB. I'm beginning to think that there's a slight chance you may not be completely serious 100 percent of the time.
-
Wake up, Harry.
-
[BANG! 2x4 to the back of the head]
-
He's a little douche bag that thinks he's witty.

here are all the pix posted over at i09 last week - http://io9.com/5629749/sandworms-and-huge-battle-scenes-concept-art-for-the-dune-movie-that-never-was/gallery/

The rest looked like it was trying too hard.
-
Not a lot to see there.
-
Ain't dat da trut, fuckz.
-
This is pretty lame.
-
You guys are getting lame: when will you realize that we also visit other sites...
-
And the worm doesn't have little mutant arms.....cuz that would be really fuckin' gay.
-
Then they aint exactly worms are they. Sand millipedes?
-
you know someone accused me of being you... you might wanna take offense to that
-
The last thing a good "Dune" - adaptation needs is jerkycam - style, sub-Michael Bay action. Then again, we'll get it anyway with Pierre Morel at the helm.
-
Don't focus so much on how he says what he says. Focus your undivided attention on the chopping. It is so wise and profound.

The concept art for Jodorowsky's version still exists
by nic_cages_real_hair
Now THAT would make some interesting news!
-
"WhisperWhisperWhisperWhisperWhisperWhisperWhisper"
"He who controls the spice, controls the galaxy BWAHAHAHAHAHA SPLOOGE"
"WhisperWhisperWhisperWhisperWhisperWhisperWhisper"
I lost interest partway through the movie. The fat warty floating douche and Sting with his ridiculous hairdo irritated me to no end. Plus the constant whispering was nightmarishly annoying, kind of like a person with long nails scratching a chalkboard. That movie just wasn't for me. Is the book any better? -
...get on with making Hyperion!
-
Give it a rest for a while. Let the next generation tackle it. Try again in 20 years.

That piece probably did take about 15mins - Concept Artist working on projects such as this are expected to churn out as many works as possible within a limited time and budget.
I took a good look at your work and you have several form, anatomy and composition issues. Your work also looks very muddy as you're using too much black in that's killing your value shifts.
As a concept artist myself working in the industry (game and film), I would also say that it's the attitude that you've shown here that is also preventing you from getting work. You've displayed a lack of knowledge about the inner-workings of the industry you're interested in and also an immature, petty jealousy toward a fellow artist - and that's something you just can't have in a team-oriented environment. -
you are correct sir. The Jodorowsky version was on the right track. Anything else is just meh. That concept art looks like someone ripping-off Ralph Steadman.
J-Dizzle, you may want to get your hearing checked out, turn up the volume or get a decent surround system. Yes, it does help if you read the book and yes it is a good book. Glad to be of service. There's no charge... this time. -
...be able to slice through heavy sand. What's with all of the forward facing protrusions? This is sub-sketch level work.
-
...your work's pretty derivative and naff, to be honest.Hey, if you can dish it, gotta be able to take it.
-
Ok Johnnyrandom is a little harsh and direct but he is speaking the truth. Your work, as much enthusiasm as you might have, is not really up to the standard required from concept artists these days.As much as I don't like Mark Simpsons illustration above, some of his other work is not bad. You need more work on your form, poses, colour and composition. Little be it for me to give you a bad crit, so take this as an honest one!

So "nifty" in Merrick-speak is...

I remember seeing Dune at a theatre....
by harryknowlesnonexistentinceptionreview
...and they were actually handing out glossaries defining all the terms used in the movie. As for me, I was VERY disappointed with the lame, flying boxes they used as ornithopters. Ah yeah, 80's FX. Didn't David Lynch have his name taken off Dune anyway? Is the director actually listed as Alan J. Smithee? Anyone know? I remember reading an interview with Lynch where he was talking about how "DiLaurentiis' Italians" came in and effed up his film. He stated that he was appalled upon seeing that the sandworm effect was basically just a bored-looking Italian dude sitting under a sandbox and sticking his arm up through a hole in the bottom into the glorified sock puppet that was the sandworm. It was funny as hell reading that because I remember thinking that's just what the sandworms in that version of Dune looked like.
-
Oh, STFU. You're white-knighting an attention whore. Fuck off.
-
I don't think Lynch has a problem with Dune apart from the TV extended cut (that's the Smithee one). A shame he's too busy meditating to do anything useful these days.

looks like bill sienkiewicz' comic adaptation from original Dune
by godhelpus
thank god it never got made. spiky worm? no thanks. original is still best.
-
it was amazing!
-
"God created Arrakis to train the faithful..." Berg went against the word of God.
-
THE_CHOPPAH both contributes to ongoing discussions in talkbacks AND chops. I think your perception of him is very limited, as if he's a "who are the ad wizards that came up with this one?" style talkbacker. Not the case with THE_CHOPPAH. He speaks truth and chops everything else that gets in the way.
-
Peter Berg was awesome in Wes Craven's Shocker!
-
Ok, first of all I have been a long time fan of the original Dune Novels that Frank Herbert wrote wayyyyy back in the 60ies...I mean Dune and Dune Messiah are just awesome true hard Sci Fi to enjoy and they are timeless as classics should be. Mr Herbert DID kind of lose me with the whole series after the first two...Children of, God Emperor of and the ensuing two more sequels afterwards were very hard to get into.
I did enjoy reading the Prequel Novels that Brian Herbert (Son of Frank) and Kevin J Anderson wrote...however The Butlerian Jihad pre-prequels? Meh!
I remember being totally psyched hearing and know that a Dune movie was being made back in the early 80ies, I couldn't wait to see it on the Big Screen...when I finally did while being stationed over in Germany as a young kid in the US Air Force...I had gummy bears and a german beer to enjoy and I was all set...Man THIS is going to be GREAT!! But instead? I ended up watching a horribly made butched piece of shit film made David Lynch! I was enraged and saddened..I wanted to track that jerk down and let him know how I thought he ruined a what could have been a great film!!
fast forward several decades later...and...low and behold the Sci-Fi Channel actually did something incredibly RIGHT for a change (The Sci Fi..excuse me...SyFy Channel has rarely ever came up with decent or good or excellent programming...besides BSG, Dresden Files and Eureka that is)...they made a Dune mini-series that was actually quite good and worthwhile to watch and enjoy! They even made Dune Messiah and Children of Dune into a followup mini-series the following year...so I highly recommend any Dune fand or people interested in watching to check it out...
I am glad to hear that Peter Berg's "version" of Dune is now defunct...as I titled this message/posting...Hollywood! leave Dune alone! Thank you -
Would love to see it get a 10 part series on a HBO, Showtime, or Starz.

I couldn't handle the Lynch version. Boring and hmmm...not very
by david_boreanez_cunt_hairz
The worms were the only thing cool about that movie.
-
Sorry ... it just looks like Kenny in his parka flailing his little arms (sandworms have arms?) while his head is getting blown off. Or something.
-
If so, just abort it like the thalidomide baby it will be, please for the love of gods.
-
I like BOTH the prior versions of Dune. Lynch has it for overall production design, casting and 'epic' feel. Sci Fi though seems to have it on overall faithfulness and coherence. Each version gets RIGHT what the other gets WRONG. Put them together and you'd have it perfect. (On the other hand, after three attempts since 1984, I still can't make it more than halfway through the book.)
-
though. Look at all the scenes: interiors have the ceilings right above the character's heads, and in exterior shots, the top and bottom border of the frame grazes the character's head and feet. Needs to seem spacious.
-
Does that sand worm have arms?
-
... is structually flawed, but damn it has some of the coolest set design ever put on film.
-
Lynch's sets were mistakenly made as one piece which is where the claustrophibic feel comes from.
-
Not a TV director for hire. Or, even worse, a music video douche with no cinematic skills.
-
Hilarious in it's terribleness. You can't top the production design of the original.
-
Sometimes, life is good.
-
If not for studio meddling. The first 2/3rds of the movie was incredible.
-
i thought the david lynch version was quite cool and sting played a great villian
-
I dont ever remember even hearing Morel was onboard. Last I recall Pete Berg was developing his own script..Then he got the fuck outa there to direct Mattels "Battleship"(doofus)
-
The thing about Lynch's Dune is - It works on a lot of levels for cinema , as an adaptation of the book however it fails. Its too unconventional for hollywood to tell a proper Dune. Its also pretty much impossible to make a series of films out of that source material. The reason why "Harry Potter" works in a series of films is because Harry is the main character throughout the series. In Dune that isnt the case. You have children who grow into adulthood, die, have children of their own who grow up , die .. and once you get to like "God Emporer" its over,.. How the fuck do you tell the story of Leto as 'Shai Halud"? It cant be done. You can go back and watch Lynchs Dune and see the changes are necessary. You cant have an 11 year old boy as the Duke of House Atreidies/Prescient/ Kwisatz Haderach teaching grown men how to fight. See, , when Lynch flipped it: That works on a "Hollywood" Level. In the Movie= Paul's grown, and its the Fremen who teach HIM the wierding way. I could go on and on about this (characters like Piter, who is straight up and down a hermaphrodite) But I digress.. Great novel , just read it and forget about a movie.
