The entire time I was watching it I kept asking "Wait, is this for real?". The entire movie felt like a joke but it took itself seriously. What Cena needs to do is just make an R-rated action flick. Make him a cop that takes down a legion of meth heads or something. But show us Cena Hulking out and beating people to death. WWE is just white trash garbage that gets huge revenue's because dudes who are in the closet go to rub one out watching a bunch of oiled down jocks hump each other. Still WWE did give us the Rock... And Steve Austin... So it's not so bad. Cena always comes off as a cool guy so I wish him the best. But he needs better movies. 12 Rounds was just... Fucking boring.
Sept. 7, 2010, 2:43 a.m. CST
No, that's UFC. I've never once masturbated in my 23 years of watching wrestling. Well maybe once, but to a chick. There's women in wrestling, you fuck. It's like me saying Scott Pilgrim is for emos or Kick Ass is for virgins.
Sept. 7, 2010, 3:07 a.m. CST
The plot kind of sounds like Wrestling Sturbridge, but with more of a focus on the brother relationship.
Also, from the trailer I saw the amateur wrestling looked pretty legit. That was one of my major problems with Visionquest. All the wrestling was throws. I hope they don't gloss over it in this movie too, like Cena was saying they do.

John Cena's star is rising, unlike the above hater's,who can't stand someone they don't like/understand earning the coin! Can you Imagine Shermdawg telling his crying little kid to shut up because he won't buy a shirt! I guess he hate's the adult's that buy John Cena shirt's too! Talk about tired shit!

I know he's only done 3 films, but he improved even between Marine and 12 Rounds. He is, by all accounts a great guy...doing plenty of charity work and always being the model pro; no stories of him shitting in peoples bags or smacking people around. I like the sounds of this one, but I think it'll be a while before we see it in the UK as I doubt it will get a theatrical release here.
To the other jackasses ripping on wrestling...fuck you guys. Wrestling fans are all white trash dumbasses? Then I guess all comic/anime/video game are geeky, loser, pretentious, serial killing assholes who live in their parents basement and jack off to Wonder Woman/Sailor Moon/Samas pictures on deviant art.....stop generalising you brain dead cunts!!!
The King Has Spoken.

Sept. 7, 2010, 7:25 a.m. CST
It just... there are a ton of people who used to watch wrestling that don't now. Cena isn't the primary reason why, but hes the easiest target.
All decisions on his character is based on the fact that his shirts sell. So his character has stayed stagnate for the last 5 years. No development or anything. His "wrestling skills" haven't even changed at all, he just renamed his moves to be more family friendly. Which sell more shirts. And makes sure that Linda McMahon doesn't have to worry that her company don't do anything controversial that might fuck up her senate chances.
Full disclosure: I haven't watched wrestling regularly since Benoit killed his family.
Sept. 7, 2010, 8:12 a.m. CST
...even expose him to today's WWE (or TNA for that matter) because the industry today is the definition of "tired shit". Lousy booking, lousy announcing (though Cole's recent work has been a breath of fresh air), lousy superstars other than a few here and there holding things down (Jericho, Show, Miz, Punk), as well as the fact that it's become way too commercialized for it's own good...12 ppv's a year killed the art of crafting decent feuds and storylines, and anyone forking over $50 for them in this day and age are insane. Hopefully the upcoming title merges will shake things up, but it's so far removed from the genuinely entertaining product I and a lot of older fans grew up with, it's gonna take a lot of effort to lure us back (fulltime). It's a sad day when a show about junkers and pawn shops are pulling in more ratings than the once mighty WWE. And it's not even the Linda McMahon campaign generated move to PG that's the problem despite many in the IWC saying otherwise. It's today's guys, especially Cena, just don't even begin to compare to the talent of the mid 80's - to early 00's. I long for the days where we have larger than life personalities, and gifted technical wrestlers that have entertaining gimmicks or managers getting them over. FUCKING MANAGERS, man. We need bickering color commentators. We need a Mean Gene, someone who asked the questions and took no shit. We need Jim Johnston promotional tunes, not this garbage rock music. (You know why NBC's Wrestlemania specials are such failures? They're shitty music video packages.) And we need the titles to somehow regain the prestige they once had, y'know back before Cena turned it into a fucking spinner, and like I said...hopefully the unifications will help. But until I do see some improvement, my kid will be watching the likes of Hogan, Savage, Flair, Rhodes, Steamboat, Hart, Hennig, Bulldog, and Roberts instead. Y'know back when pro wrestling was good, and infinitely more entertaining. If you like the guy, whatever floats your boat, man. But for me, and a hell of a lot of other fans, he just doesn't cut the mustard, and until he goes heel......which looks to be never happening at this point, especially considering the movies entering the mix, he probably never will.
Sept. 7, 2010, 9:29 a.m. CST
i need to apologise for the last line in my post Shermdawg,to be honest, have not watched a lot of wrestling in the last few years, and you are spot-on about why wrestling has been going downhill with many older fan's! I unfarly bunched you in with some of the other poster's remarks, sorry

9 of the top 22 of the movies at this weekends box office are in the $15-$40 million range, including the top 3. A thing of the past? Not really! Studios have found that if they actually keep the budgets reasonable that its frankly not hard to turn a profit. Both Machete and The American would have been considered rather large disappointments at the box office if they didn't have budgets of $20 mil. Since they did, they're well on their way to profitability and success.
Sept. 7, 2010, 12:18 p.m. CST
I saw The Marine the other day - I liked it. It never took itself seriously, which made it fun.
Sept. 7, 2010, 12:21 p.m. CST
The Marine was a comedy. That's what made it great. Obviously when the black guy looks directly into the camera after spotting the car he wants... IT'S A COMEDY.
Sept. 7, 2010, 1:34 p.m. CST
I met him once after a Royal Rumble (which he lost at the end!) and he was very friendly and grateful. Kids were constantly bothering him and the other wrestlers eating, and he was more than amicable. You can't blame his wrestling persona on him, he does what the writers/Vince want him to do, and he does it pretty well! His movies haven't been the greatest (they haven't been car-wrecks either), but he definitely tries to make them better than they are. I like the direction WWE Films is headed and I hope this is just the start for a streak of some decent movies.
Sept. 7, 2010, 2:38 p.m. CST
He most definitely can wrestle. Is there anyone who does more to pull the crowd in than Cena? Pro-Wrestling isn't all wrist locks and armbars. Not that he can't do that either.
Sept. 7, 2010, 3:45 p.m. CST
I'm not ashamed to say i've been a wrestling fan my entire life. Why some people trash Wrestling while defending some of the stuff they are fans of,stuff that seems stupid to your average person, it's beyond me. If you love tortue porn and hardcore Asian horror films and say wrestling fans are stupid what does that make you? It's just funny to me.

you are spot on. People go on about cena using the same moves all the time..have they ever watched a ric flair match. you can pretty much call every single one of his matches move for move. Now I am not trying to deny flairs greatness but Cena is hardly the first wrestler to use the same moves over and over.

Rubbing one out watching UFC? Nope, I'm usually interested in how the real competition turns out. Of course, anyone who has ever wrestled or competed has more in common with today's UFC fighter than anything in pro wrestling. Just so ya know.

I loved me some pro wrestling back in the day. It just hasn't been interesting (for ME) in a long, long time. I won't harsh on anyone else for liking it though, ever.

...I'm on board with you. I started watching wrestling when I was really young in the early 90's and became a full-fledged mark when the business boomed circa 96-97. but I haven't really followed any promotion consistently since the botched WCW "invasion" angle. I got on board with TNA when they started out as NWA:TNA and their platform was weekly PPV's that emphasized the actual wrestling. but ever since they got their TV deal with Spike, TNA has become just as much spectacle as the WWE. how-ev-ah... for those of you who still just enjoy pure, technical wrestling, and have access to the HDNet channel... Philadelphia-based Ring of Honor now has a show on Monday nights at 8 PM on HDNet. their show is about 5% vignettes and 95% wrestling, and they've got some legitimate, bonafide wrestling talent. its just too bad that the WWE got ahold of Bryan Danielson right before RoH got their tv deal.
Sept. 7, 2010, 7:51 p.m. CST
It might be better if the camera work wasn't so awful. I'd never almost gotten sick because of a TV show before.
Sept. 7, 2010, 11:32 p.m. CST
It takes place in a black void where wrestlers are lacking charisma and will bore you to death for an hour. I can't see anyone who loved the boom period of the 90s would be interested.

There was a group of us heading to Iraq in 2008. We're eating in a decent restaraunt in Norfolk, when one of our party noticed John Cena was in the restarant. He took the time to shake our hands (dude has HUGE freakin' hands)then happily posed with us for a few shots. Just a good, all-around guy!

Sept. 8, 2010, 9:13 a.m. CST
NO you won't. Silly media people. Sorry. I work around wrestlers and that crap gets old. Cena was a bodybuilder and school football player. He has come a long way, but takes a lot of heat from the hardcore fans due to his push in WWE. Right now, he's the body type they want whether or not there's better wrestlers out there. Get used to it gang. The WWE only wants bodybuilder type guys and swimsuit model girls.
Sept. 8, 2010, 9:15 a.m. CST

Sept. 8, 2010, 2:13 p.m. CST
like I said, charismatic mic-work isn't their forte. it is, after all, a company founded upon the talents of guys like Bryan Danielson, Christopher Daniels, and Samoa Joe... not exactly the best group of mic workers. but if you just enjoy great technical wrestling from guys who know how to tell a story in the ring, then you'd enjoy RoH.
