GALACTICA Mastermind Ronald D. Moore Developing POTTER-ish Drama For NBC!!

Published at:  Sep 02, 2010 3:38:46 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Deadline Hollywood reports “Star Trek: The Next Generation”/“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” strongman Ronald D. Moore, who went on to serve as showrunner for “Carnivale,” “Battlestar Galactica” and “Caprica,” is now at work on a new pilot for NBC.

Excerpt:

The project from Sony TV where the Battlestar Galactica developer inked a two-year overall deal in May, is described as an adult Harry Potter set in a world ruled not by science but by magic. I hear the drama got pilot and series penalties totaling close to $2 million.

Exciting! After “Justified,” Moore’s 2009 Fox TV-movie “Virtuality” was the best pilot I saw last year.

Other than that though, oh yeah The Deep was well worth a watch

    by mr lucas

I thought was referring to Dennis. If I never hear the name Harry Potter again, it'll be a million years too soon. Despite what Gaiman says, she probably did copy him. She has 1000th of his talent/imagination. It never ceases to amaze and annoy me how successful her pap has become. Good PR is the only possible explanation surely? The stories and characters are unoriginal and uninteresting.

    by discogodfather

It's about a kid who goes to a magical college and discovers that the magical lands he loved reading about as a kid are real. And he also has sex, does drugs, and swears a lot. It's a great book that would adapt fairly well, as long as it's cast VERY CAREFULLY.

Let's not pretend Gaiman has ever had an original thought in his life. I like Gaiman well enough, but Harry Potter is not a rip-off of The Books of Magic. That's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen Herc say. Sorry, Herc.

Imajica I mean...The homoerotic weirdness in the first chapters, and then the dimensional portal that takes us to tolkien's "middle earth", left me wondering what the hell kind of story this thing was. I kept reading as long as I could and eventually had to give the book back to my girlfriend at the time.

It sounds very much like the Dresden Files, except the TV show failed, mostly because it failed to adopt the charisma, humor, and complexity behind the main character. The TV version of Harry Dresden was about as compelling as watching an economist describe the virtues of free market capitalism to a communist audience.

    by oisin5199

Though Gaiman has said that both he and Rowling were ripping off T.H. White (Once and Future King) and thought there was no merit to the claim that she nicked his idea, look at the facts. She was writing the first HP novel around the time the first comic came out. The hero is 1) a British kid, 2)dark hair with round glasses, 3) has questions about his parentage and it's clear the man who's raising him is not his biological father, 3) is destined to be a 'chosen one' of sorts, 4) and has a magical pet owl. That's kind of where the similarity ends, but it's a lot of similarities. Though Tim Hunter would have kicked Harry Potter's ass for being such a whiny bitch. Or would have snarked him to death.

Randall Garrett's Lord Darcy is most likely the best inspiration for this.

(Yes, its more Victorian than Modern, but the idea is much closer than Books of Magic or HP.)
