John Woo Takes To The Skies...And IMAX...With The FLYING TIGERS!!
Merrick here...
John Woo, whose recent two part extravaganza RED CLIFF demonstrated a dazzling return to form (it's available HERE
), is now targeting FLYING TIGERS.
The "true story" centers on an American pilot who trained Chinese flyers to face Japanese forces during World War II. The aerial combat epic is budgeted at $90 million, and will see digitally remastering for issuance in IMAX theaters.
THIS Wiki entry indicates that the Tigers trained in Burma, was comprised of three squadrons of approximately 20 fighters a piece, asserts that the unit was akin to a "mercenary" organization, and were commanded by a man named Claire. War paint on the flying Tigers Planes planes is now legendary. I know I had a toy exactly like this growing up, and still see 'em in stores today. How about you?

Nothing is cooler in the air - fact
-
...but it sure smells good!
-
thing I have seen in a long time. Infact anytime I measure a huge dissapointment against something it's always "was it a Red Cliff 2?" And invariably nothing is ever that bad.
-
I can't stand his films.
-
I agree to you to some extent...I'd seen far worse films but I ALMOST bought the movies based upon the rants-and-raves from this site. Glad I didn't. I spent probably 80% of the movie thinking WTF? I love these types of films but this was idiotic.
-
shredding them to pieces?

But maybe that's just me.
-
people need to know why we paint shark mouths on our cars.
-
Glad it's being made into a film.
-
it will be better than Windtalkers. That was a great example of how to make an interesting true story boring even with all the death and carnage going on.
-
apart from the stunning birds-eye final shots of part 1, was my discovery of Taro Iwashiro... The guy can write music.

I guess we'll have to wait for the Cohen brothers True Grit to see how successful a John Wayne movie remake can be. I would have picked the Cowboys to remake. But who are you going to find to play Bruce Dern's role? Nobody does batshit creepy/crazy like he did.
-
Empire had this story 6 weeks ago, plus the fact that Neeson is wanted for the lead.
-
Yet still another remake.
-
Seriously. The P-40's flown by the Flying Tigers (amongst others) were reknowned for hitting hard and being very tough for their era, although they were slow and graceless. It was a fascinating match-up to have them fight against the much faster and more agile Mitsubishi Zeros and other similar Japanese fighters, and they were usually outnumbered by the Japanese to boot.
General Claire Chennault's men acquitted themselves quite well, according to the history I read about them.... -
Fuck..what DO they teach in schools these days? Bet you don't know about the American Eagle Squadrons or the Polish Pilots who flew for Britain. Sometimes the lack of well rounded educations and the seeming intellectual laziness in the world amazes me.
-
Don't know what your deal is with John Woo, but if you hate his films so much why do you watch them? And if you don't watch them, then you have no idea what you are talking about! Either way, why are you here????
-
that be cool.
-
JW really needs to go back to his bread and butter; the "Heroic Bloodshed" genre. Almost everything he's made since "hard target" is garbage.
-
Don't understand the hate. Even at his worst, he's a lot better than most of the other directors out there. You always know what you're gonna get with him: highly stylized, over-the-top violence, the hero/villain mexican standoff, and some slow-motion white doves.
-
Lots of slow mo shots of Doves?

Let's see him re-team with Chow Yun Fat
by turd_has_risen_from_the_grave
to make Hard Boiled 2. They already did a video game. Also, what happened to Metroid? That would have been great.

He created the technique for the Flying Tigers to approach from on high, dive through the Zeros and make a quick exit. It worked very well.
Then some veteran Battle of Britain Spitfires showed up and the wussy Brits were shot out of the skies by those inferior Japanese. Those were not Messerschmidts boys! -
He also gets dual pistols and yells "I'm CASTOR TROY!" for some odd reason.
-
Merrick do you go out of your way to piss me of with your horrible personality or are you just a stupid bitch?
-
Would be nice even if one of the background characters was name Jake Cutter .
-
What an asshole!
-
Might be hard to do in airplanes but I love old WW2 planes. Just hope he doesn't screw it up.
-
because a Flying Tigers plane would most definitely not have U.S. insignia on its wings. And the Flying Tigers weren't in the business of training Chinese pilots--they were in the business of shooting down Japanese. What an unexpectedly clueless article! Do boys no longer grow up having read about boy things such as war?
-
He trained in Arizona. How do I let Woo know of this?
-
Make it like Prince of Persia and its no Arab policy
-
...and after reading Harry's reviews.
-
Just don't bring Hollywood
-
Think of it as a Kumite in the air

John Woo is Chinese and he's making this for the Chinese cinema?
I hope he's intelligent enough to portray the Japanese in a balanced light. The Chinese are still to this day complaining about what the Japanese did to them in WW2, which was to be honest terrible things, but it's now 70 years later. If they want an apology, then they haven't taken the time to study Japanese culture. They also overlook the appalling human rights violations that the Chinese have inflicted over the years.
Europe has forgiven Germany and Italy, move on people, the country is a different place, we're two generations on. Hirohito is long dead.
All wars are conceived by corrupt politicians, but faught largely by regular people caught up in the mess, doing their bit for their country. A soldier/pilot is not to blame, but most war films portray the Japanese/Germans as faceless demons, which is lazy film making. If Mr Woo has the balls to portray elements of Japanese military as real, good hearted, people, not evil monsters, then the film will have a hundred times more dramatic impact, and be accurate to boot. It's easy to kill a demonized enemy, that's why propoganda encouraged this way to perceive the enemy, but the reality is rather different.
My hopes are on Tom Cruise's Flying Tigers movie to take this in the right direction. He's spent time researching Japanese culture whilst making the last Samurai, I would hope he knows the real situation of war.
All that aside, imax p40's dogfighting zero's is a must see and both films have my ticket already, (despite windtalkers, yaaaaaawn).
By the way, the shark mouth nose painting was started by the luftwaffe on their bf110 aircraft. Later copied by the RAF on their p40's and spitfire's, then by the Flying Tigers.
