A Falconer No More, Donald!! Will Forte Has Departed SNL!!
I am – Hercules!!
The man who gave “Saturday Night Live” MacGruber, The Falconer and Tim Calhoun will not be part of the show’s cast this autumn, according to The New York Times.
The message from the Forte camp:
“After eight great seasons, Will has made the decision to move on from ‘S.N.L.’ to pursue new opportunities. He is eternally grateful to Lorne and all of the incredible people he worked with over the years.”
Forte, who starring in the Lorne Michaels-produced big-screen “MacGruber” this year, will next be seen alongside fellow SNL vets Jason Sudeikis and David Koechner in “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy,” from “King of the Hill” writers Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck.

Why is it that the funny ones leave?
-
...Will has decided to move on from SNL to pursue new opportunities in total obscurity.
-
it wasn't his Forte. Anyone? No? (crickets)
-
...and yeah, he mugs shamelessly and speaks in one volume (loud). But every time he does that idiotic "What Up With That" sketch, I invariably end up in fits of uncontrollable laughter.
-
...Waht up with that? Whaaa-aaat uuuupppp, I say what uuuu-uuupppppp a-wiiii-ith.....THAAAAAAAAAT! Waht... up... with...THAT!
-
He's probably my favorite member of what has become a very strong cast. No more Closet Organizer?!?
-
fuck all the haters. the old man sex positions videos, whatsupwithTHAT, jean k jean, virginiaca, scared straight with lorenzo macintosh, deep house dish...........they all make me laugh.
Do I like Kenan the most on SNL? No. I liked Forte the most. Followed by Hader, Samberg, and Armisen. Moynihan has been doing well lately also. Sudeikis is always great.Kenan is funny. fuck the haters. -
THAT is the question.... I think 'not'. Place me squarely in the SNL has sucked for over a decade, with rare moments of brilliance to keep the horse's corpse from getting too moldy as people continue to wear out their sticks on it.

Thank F-ing God! (Now Keenen, Sudekis, and Meyers need to follow
by prestigeworldwide
Don't get me wrong, I think Will Forte is hi-larry-us, but he has been at SNL waaayyyy to long. With the exception of Will Ferrell (who actully believed no cast member should go more then 7 seasons, and proved it by exiting after that amount of time) I haven't seen a cast member whom I thought should have stayed more then 7 years, and many I wish would leave much earlier. I was happy to see taht Fred Armiasan left earlier this summer (though I wasn't happy to hear that he's nailing the Abby Elliott, hands down the hottest cast member ever on SNL) and I hope that Keenan follows their leads and moves on to other things. I have NVER liked Jason Sudekis on SNL, since he only has one character, and that is him shouting even louder then Keenan in EVERY SINGLE SKETCH! Seriously, he is usually pretty good at playing more reserved characters, like on 30 Rock or The Ten. Also, get rid of the new female cast member who isn't the cute Iranian, and reign in Wiig's habit of playing horrible characters who aren't funny but get on the show because they're played by Kristen Wiig. Seth Meyers should also pack it in, as he doesn't add that much as ether a head writer or Update anchor. Hader and Sandburg have at least one more year in them (which means they'll be there for another 3-4 years), and Bobby M needs to get more screen time (I just saw Mystery Team, and he was hands down the funniest person in that movie). I will still watch SNL no matter what they do, but honestly, their last truly great year was Will Ferrell's last year. The show just hasn't been as consistently funny since that time.
-
but then again, Im not racist
-
A stepping stone. I dunno, I quit watching SNL back in the late 90's. The few times I tried watching it since then were pretty awful. :(
-
The best color man in the business.
-
i disagree. jon bovi was awesome (and with Forte). The A-Holes with Kristen Wiig grew on me and I started loving their skits. The cop who always restrains Kenan in the scared Straight sketches was decent. He was one of the regulars in those skits where 4 guys sit around discussing fucked up memories that they think of because of the song thats playing. Pete Twinkle - the ESPN guy with Forte's character was hilarious.....all those feminine product catchphrases.Don't even get me started on his breakdancing character from Whats up with that.
-
The ESPN Classic skits were hilarious. I didn't like Forte at first, but he's grown to be one of my favorite cast members over the past few years.
-
I look at a list like itrainmonkeys posted above and can't recall laughing at any of those. "What's up with that" is a marathon of fighting the urge to turn off my TV. But Forte had some good bits. Sad to see him go.
-
SNL has not been news worthy (except for the occasional guest worthy of note) since Tina Fey left. Move along.
-
made better because he only did it a few times and not milked for all it's worth.
-
him and Suds doing the retro ESPN female sports is the funniest thing in history!!!!
-
I'm talking about the sketch, of course. I have yet to meet anyone stupid enough to have paid to see the movie.
-
because youre racist? let me ask, how much do you hate Will Smith? like are you a "aw hell na" Smith hater or a "how dare Will Smith use his power and money to help his son make a movie that is not about drug dealing/the hood/breakdancing"? Cuz I have a feeling you hates Big Willy
-
kenan rules! i love it when he makes hader crack up in scared straight :-)
-
Bieber, Kesha (I refuse to give her the dollar sign), and Taylor Swift? your target audience hates you for succumbing to the kids... but one thing Im glad SNL did last year was introduce me to the greatness that is...THEM CROOKED VULTURES!
-
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooeeeeeeeeeeeee, what up with that? what's up with that! :-)
-
but at least hes not annoying while doing it like a certain person hosting the Emmys...
-
C.mon now Linsay... don't do me like that... give me a smile... THERE YOU GO!!!
-
-- but it didn't exist". The public demands a HAMILTON feature film!
-
herc misses the biggest news of the week, as the only interesting act on agt (arcattack) got voted off
-
Forte's always been great. Only exception: Greg Stink. Jesus effing Christ those sketches were painful.
-
on Tim and Eric. I haven't seen him on SNL other than the two sketches in this post, but I didn't come close to laughing once. They were interesting to watch, but were totally devoid of comedy.
-

I never understood the popularity of The Falconer or MacGruber
by rob0729
Both were pretty repetitive one joke sketches (as seen in the clip Herc posted). I like Tim Calhoun and other Forte sketches, but I always thought The Falconer and McGruber were post 12:30 quality sketches.
-
You know Lorne Michaels is scraping the bottom of the barrel when he takes talent from Nickelodeon.
-
...with the possible exception of that political comic shit Fred Armisen does with the newspaper.

Why the FUCK is Shaquille O'Neal hosting the season premiere
by shiftyeyeddog2
He's not even relevant in basketball anymore, much less as a worthy choice for SNL host, and even LESS so as a choice to kick off the season!!!
-
No stops.
-
Jesus. seriously.
-
Long-time hater of Forte in the SNL talkbacks. Far too many one-note premises repeated past the point of discomfort (Give up the Ham, Jon Bovi, Potato Chip, Falconer, Tim Calhoun, MacGruber). Closet Organizer is the only character of his that I liked, and to be honest, I expected him to come back and outstay his welcome.
(I do like the 4 guys sitting around and one-upping horrible anecdotes around old music - because it was always funny - but I can't remember whether Forte was in those.)
His ESPN Classic character is Jason Bateman in "Dodgeball" repackaged, and I'd expect them to keep doing the sketch with a new color analyst. Sudekis' segueways into feminine hygene pitches are what sell the sketches. -
Hate Will Forte. HATE. His film career is on fumes so he should be teaching "improv" in about a year.
-
Makes me glad I don't bother to watch this crapfest.
-
maybe I am too old or whatever but don't get it
-

Looks like the failure of MacGruber was too much for him
by orionsangels

You guys probably aren't old enough to remember when SNL was actually funny (the Eddie Murphy days) or when it was the funniest show on TV (the first season with Dan Ayroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtain, Gilda Radner). The cast nowadays is way too large because they are trying to replace quality with quantity.
-
But he is a hilarious and I'll miss his skits for sure. SNL for me is still funnier than most shit on television so I keep going back to it.
-
It really really was
-
gonna miss him. Closet organizer bit was gold.
-
Forte's worn on me a bit the last couple years. his stuff is real hit-or-miss. But he has had some brilliant stuff.
-
Everytime AICN post anything SNL related, we get the handfull of talkbackers who insist on screaming how unfunny SNL has become. Yet most of them seem to watch every week religiously anyway and most likely laugh each week. But come Monday morning they are the first to come on and anounce how shitty this weeks episode was. Why? You got me, I guess it's not cool to like SNL anymore. And yes I am old enough to remember watching Eddie Murphy on SNL. But you seem to forget that most of the skits without Eddie were not as memorable.
-
The skit never gets old. can't understand why people loathe it. It is wonderfully bizarre in its conception and characterization.
-
More than 7, wasn't her? Might be the single funniest person ever to grace SNLs stage. And I'll bet ya Will Ferrell would agree. Sucks to be you all who had to grow up with the SNL of the last 10+ years as your late Saturday night entertainment. A few good moments here and there do not a good decade make...
-
Everyone seems to forget the brutal Bush impression Forte used to do. Always wondered why they replaced him as Bush. Was it too brutal a take?
But for me he will be a legend for the Spelling Bee skit he did where he plays a kid who misspells his word horribly but... he just keeps "spelling", calmly spitting out letter after letter for... ahd to be three minutes! One of those bits that felt dangerous because he just pushed it so far, where it would stop being funny, go to annoying and then go back to being even funnier. Then he finishes and... "Wrong." -
"how to fix robots" and "the anal retentive chef" are two of my favorite skits of Hartman.
-
my bad
-
He's just terribly unfunny and pretty much plays the same (unfunny) character over and over. Tim Meadows on the other hand was hilarious.
-
are ridiculous. It's never been consistently funny. Watch the first 5 episodes of the first season in a row and you'll see there's a ton of crappy ideas and unfunny sketches. Lots of weird stuff and it was a different show. People only choose to remember the good stuff from Belushi, Aykroyd, Murphy and others. They block out the crappy stuff.SNL is still good. They do beat characters into the ground at times and also have sketches go on much longer then they should....but they are still just as good as the old ones IMO. About Shaq hosting and someone complaining about it.......are you fucking kidding me? Shaq had two of the funniest skits I can remember on SNL - Tracy Morgan as his dad who catches Shaq (as a character named Bernard) sneaking in after curfew. It was hilarious watching Tracy Morgan put Shaq over his knee and spank him. The other sketch was Lorne Michaels, Kelsey Grammer, and a few cast member poking and making fun of Will Ferrell....then Shaq comes in and saves the day and he and Ferrell have a hilarious song which ends with Shaq carrying Ferrell like a baby. It's on Funnyordie.com - go watch it.About the music acts......SNL has always had the musical acts "of the moment" so it makes sense that they would book people like Justin Beiber and Taylor Swift. They also book really good bands like Them Crooked Vultures, Jay-Z, Tom Petty, Phoenix, Fleet Foxes and others.
You haters are crazy. If you don't like Forte or Kenan that's fine. You don't find them funny. But that doesn't mean you're opinion of them is the truth. Many others laugh at their sketches. -
jean k jean - french comedian whose comedy doesn't translate for american audiences
macintosh - scared straight inmate who tries to scare kids with tales where the plot is stolen from old movies
virginiaca - black female stereotype who always has a white step-daughter and is socially weird
grady something (old man sex positions DVD) - old guy who came up with sex positions to use for older folks
not the same character over and over. Tim Meadows was great, but only had The Ladies Man. Can you come up with a few other Tim Meadows characters? -
some people forget that most of the skits they love from the past were overdone as well. Waynes World was on almost every week. Eddie Murphy did Mr. Robinsons neighboorhood too many times. Will Farrell did the cheerleader skit to death. Keenan is not the first to milk a skit for everything he can.
-
...need to be dropped. Not funny. Not entertaining. Samberg is off the list because of the Emanuel sketch. Awesome.
-
...probably are.
Keenan is terrible. The WhatUpWithThat sketch works because: the song is kinda catchy, the idea is slightly absurd, and the background stuff is over-the-top. None of that has to do with Keenan. -
Eight years seems to be about enough. Unless you're Hammond. Work one day a week and get paid more than anyone else.

-
Doesn't get much better than that. I thought MacGruber was one of the funnier movies I've seen in years.
-
he was one of the oompa-loompas, right?
-
With the rest of the wash-outs. I'm looking at you Horatio Sanz and Tim Kazinski.
-
I'm with you on this. I've been watching SNL for at least 20+ years, and I've always enjoyed it. Remember the people who said the show sucked after Farley/Spade/Sandler left? They were probably the same people who hated the Will Ferrell/Tracy Morgan/Chris Kattan/Molly Shannon/Cheri O'Teri years, even though members of that cast are now seen as a great era of SNL.For me, I watch every week... and there are always 1 or 2 sketches that have me laughing out loud, a few that make me chuckle... and some that make me cringe. But, I also understand how fucking hard it is to put on a 90-minute live comedy show each week, and I can appreciate what they do on just that level alone. I understand the people who don't enjoy SNL... but I don't understand the incessant bitching that it hasn't been any good or has had zero elements of comedy in 10/20/30 years. Bullshit. It's hilarious sometimes... humorous a good chunk of the time... and awful sometimes. It is what it is and I've always loved it... always will.
-
When he plays the world-class gingerbread house maker on Tim and Eric Nite Live. This is a piece of art. I'm sure it's on Youtube...
-
Where did you hear that? I can't find anything online to support that assertion and I hadn't heard anything. I think you're mistaken.
-
I thought his head was going to explode. That's acting their son. lol
-
not funny. The first one was absolutely painful.
-
But I'll miss him as the women's sports announcer...

Also, has anyone seen Aubrey Plaza's SNL audition tape...
by danielkurland
Her Sarah Silverman impression is better than the real thing.
-
Don't get me wrong. I like him a lot in the show. But he does half a dozen movies every year. I figured he'd be looking for greener pastures. If they get a new guy maybe they can get someone who can actually do a decent Obama impression. I know at least four comedians here in LA that do spot-on impressions and yet they can't seem to find one in all of New York
-
Cut them loose when their balls drop or they have a hit movie whichever comes first!
-
Seriously, when we TIVO the previous night's episode and Keenan comes on singing "What's Up With Dat?". My girlfriend's 6 years old autistic son jumps up and starts dancing singing along. It is amazing to watch and funny as Hell! So Keenan & Sponge Bob are the only things on TV right now that make that kid happy!
-
Because the movie was a mega hit right?
-
And you can't find it anywhere online because NBC pulled all of the YouTube versions but never uploaded it to Hulu. That's Comcastic!
-
A lot of "hilarious" characters that aren't hilarious at all. Just sort of annoying.
-
The only brutal thing about Forte's George W. Bush was how bad it was. W has a ton of cartoonish mannerisms that are ripe for parody and Forte managed to not get a single one of them. OTOH, it wasn't that bad compared to what Armisen is doing with Obama. Is he even aware that Obama is a real guy and that he should be trying to sound like him?
-
Makes me never want to watch SNL again. That's pretty disrespectful to put one of Will Forte's worst sketches up, in tribute.
-
It's his best work. Lazy Horse Mattress.
-
Love McGruber. Didn't see the film but will on netflix. He was part of a great cast, one of SNL'S peaks.
-
I know, I know... but it needs to show up, at least 50 times, on every SNL thread.
-
Truth.
-
He was my fav.
-
FIRE SLATE, REHIRE WATKINS!!!

Coming soon to a theater near you...
-
everything he did was a steaming pile of dog shit
-
And you might give the current state of SNL a pass.
It is still fucking unfunny crap for teenagers who can't wait to see Vampires Suck. -
also some black writer I've never heard of also left SNL for 30 Rock
-
She is such a one-trick pony. All she does is bulge her eyes continuously and make crazy faces. I'm so sick of her!
-
Does AICN just milk its own tits during the day? How is this site even relevant anymore.
-
"Two things aren't arguable. Humor and Sex. If I think someone's Funny or Sexy, and you don't: There's no way I can convince you you're wrong."
-
Its the skits she's in that mostly suck.
-
Forte has always been one of my favorite SNL players in recent years and it will suck without him. I do hope it's Keenan's final year, and I hope there is some good new talent coming in.
-
"Potato Chip Thief" was one of my all time favorite SNL sketches, and Will Forte is one of my all time favorite Not Ready for Prime Time players. Loved the Falconer, loved Tim Calhoun, loved Jon Bovi, too. But my favorite Forte character is Hamilton Whiteman:

I guess I should care or something, but I doubt anyone will miss him.
-
I don't understand why you guys keep posting it on here. It was utter crap.
-
Man, haven't seen much SNL in years (for good reason) but just watched that potato chip sketch. Christ that was awful. I've seen funnier things come out of a first level improv troupe in class - and this was on national TV???
The only reason the Ferrell/Shannon era seems golden to anyone now is because the show sucks more every year. I remember seeing the first episode with Ferrell, the season premiere, at the time, and I thought OK SNL IS OVER NOW because it was so bad. Now it probably seems like comedy gold compared to Potato Chip Crap.
It's true there's crap in every season right from the beginning, but Belushi or Chase et. al could do more with a momentary look or a gesture than any of these people could do in 8 years. They could be clever and subtle. This Potato Chip Kids in the Hall reject sketch is a classic example of being so unsubtle or trying to be absurd and just ending up stupid. The audience is clearly asleep and embarrassed for most of it. If there's trying to be daringly gross (hahaha) with the spit-up bit, well, Python already had a skit forty years ago about eating your own dead mother.
The death knell for SNL for me was Tina Fey. I remember thinking, who is this new person doing the news and being painfully smug and unfunny? Wait, it's one of the head writers? Now it all makes sense. -
But I hope Forte gets plenty of screentime in the Tim & Eric movie. He's always awesome on that show.
-
Forte always felt like a C grade comedian. More annoying than funny. Seemed like a nice enough guy. He just wasn't very good I don't think.
-
Wow, every time I see any content from SNL it reaffirms my opinion that it's the least funny show on TV. That skit was HORRIBLE. How do people think that crap is funny?
-
unlike this cast, his impressions were dead-on His Clinton, Sinatra, Reagan, and Nicholson are among the best anyone's ever done. And he was the first to do the "Caveman" thing before it was done to death. In the grave, he's funnier than most of the 2010 snl class
-
I think the current cast (or last year's cast) is a big upgrade from the Jimmy Fallon/Hortio Sanz era (quick someone name a memorable sketch from either one that didn't involve them screwing up and giggling at their own lame jokes throughout the sketch). But I still think it is a pale comparison to the original cast, the All Star cast, and the Dana Carvey/Phil Hartman years.
Personally, I think for the longest time (and I am talking decades) this show hasn't consistently shown any balls. SNL originally cutting edge comedy. Now you can find more edgy humor on the Family Guy than you can get on Saturday Night. The All Star cast (Crystal, Short, Guest, etc.) and the Carvey cast could get humor out of tame comedy, but it has failed more than succeeded over the last decade. -
I remember the day after Hartman was murdered, my mom (late 60s) called and grieved over his very premature death. Crying! I didn't know she watched SNL and had no idea that she absolutely treasured Hartman's talent. The show subsequently eroded and I know few former fans who bother to watch it. As for Forte, what's he gonna do? MACGRUBER 2? As for Kenan, he's still pulling the same 'ole shtick when he was paired with the equally untalented Kel Mitchell (anyone remember the KENAN & KEL sitcom? An insult to kids everywhere, the leads were required only to mug ansd scatter ashes over Ken Foree's carer).
-
Ken Foree's career...schtick...mug and scatter ashes...falling into Harry's habit, i.e. complete forfeiture of proofreading.
-
The early 90's cast. Carvey, Sandler, Hartman, Farley, Myers, all those guys on up to Ferrell. The classic original cast will always be awesome and unique, but hands down I prefer the 90s cast. Haven't really watched it since about 1999-2000 or so and when I have - I gotta agree with a lot of people here: it does nothing for me. There are definitely some great individual members, but as an ensemble-type cast... not into it. I disagree that Fallon didn't have any great sketches. The Barry Gibb Talk Show(s) with Timberlake still make me laugh hysterically even though I've seen them 100 times.
-
Anybody can write something weird, and completely devoid of humor. Forte and whoever wrote the potato sketch, rose to the level of SNL, because they are actually very funny people. Then while on the SNL platform, they made a sketch that was completely unfunny - on par with a level 1 Second City improv class sketch. And hipster contrarian weirdos think it's greatness, just because it's "different." Give me a f*cking break. It's not absurdist comedy if it doesn't have the comedy.
-
Ok, the Barry Gibbs sketch was funny, but overall he was horrible.
-

-
All the cast does now is stand around in costume and literally stare at their lines on the teleprompters. Duh! The job of an actor is to act! They don't even interact with the other actors on stage with them - they rarely even make eye contact with each other.I'm surprised this horrid situation doesn't get more attention. I can't imagine show producers, directors, and network people watching the shows and thinking that it's okay or even close to passing. I DARE SNL to do a show without the teleprompters.
-
Let's face it. What did he have besides Opera Man and Canteen Boy? And Canteen Boy was completely eclipsed by the awesomeness that is Alec Baldwin.
Forte is easily replaceable. Its the "glue" guys like Phil Hartman and, dare I say it, Will Ferrell, who are harder to replace.
And Darrell Hammond must have pictures of Lorne with a donkey, because he should have been let go at least 5 years ago. -
I like him in small doses. The "Scared Straight" skit is probably a top 3 recurring skit for me.
-
but they soon grew to be two of my all-time favorites. Keenan is very limited, though. He has a few funny things here and there but if he were white he'd have been gone long ago. Hasn't been a good versatile black male performer on that show since Tim Meadows.
-
Funny, very versatile. His absence is one of the reasons for the show's rapid decline. By the way, why wasn't a "Best of Tim Meadows" DVD included with the SNL franchise?
-
Aug 29, 2010 12:19:17 AM CDT
california_mtz - The show has alway used cue cards
by bob loblaw law blog
I'm pretty certain they've never used teleprompters, but they've ALWAYS had cue cards. There is no way in hell you could do a live 90-minute sketch comedy show that was written days before it airs WITHOUT THEM. And cue cards and teleprompters are quite different in how they're utilized.
-
It'll just keep getting stuffed with improv and second city comedians until the right combo comes up again. Remember that before Phil Hartman and Mike Myers (his one or two good years) we had to sit through Joe Piscopo and Anthony Michael Hall and people I can't even remember names of.
-
I stress 'on SNL'. The Denise Show!
Tim Meadows is also extremely underrated. -
Not only was Forte a strong and reliable cast member, but he was also one of the most creative and interesting writers. Gonna miss the Sudeikis / Greg Stink ESPN bits, Jon Bovi, and especially Hamilton! I always looked forward to a Hamilton appearance and I admired how Forte never ran the character into the ground. I remember the Drew Barrymore / Mailton sketch as particularly awesome.
