It might actually by oldish news, but Variety reports/confirms that Bourne Identity's Doug Liman will be directing the Warner Bros. adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's Forever War compared sci-fi novel "All You Need Is Kill."
According to Variety, The studio's been developing "All You Need Is Kill" since April when it bought Dante Harper's adaptation. Producers are Erwin Stoff, Tom Lassally and Jason Hoffs with Hidemi Fukuhara exec producing.
An English translation of the novel is available in North America via anime/manga publisher Viz Media's Haikasoru sci-fi prose line. ("Haikasoru" being Philip K. Dick reference.)
When the alien Mimics invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor called a Jacket and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to be reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On his 158th iteration, he gets a message from a mysterious ally--the female soldier known as the Full Metal Bitch. Is she the key to Keiji's escape or his final death?
An excerpt of the novel can be read here.

Fuck Whedon.

I had good things to say about the book here: http://bit.ly/b89VeG I'm a little worried that they're going to localize it by making the hero "Western", but I wince a lot less at that than I do the thought of a Westernized "Akira" (gag).

Full Metal Alchemist?
-
Movie will suck. Roasted in box office.
-
i'd like to be able to see the slaughtering going on without shaky bullshit quickcutting.
-
He's like some kind of sci-fi Typhoid Mary.
-
Sounds like smart science fiction is on its way again.

the title of an upcoming Bond film?
-
I like Liman's work. I still think The Bourne Identity is the most compelling and best-made of the three Bourne films. Liman did actually deliver a new kind of gritty, realistic action film. The hand-held style of Identity gives it a cinema verite quality that completely removes it from what went before, as in the Bond, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard type actioners. Unfortnately, Paul Greengrass tried to ape Liman's style, and did it badly, with so much shaky-cam and rapid editing that the action becomes a mess. Perfect action scene--when Bourne disarms the two cops who urge him to move on from the park bench in Identity. Nothing in the Greengrass films equals even that small scene.

Excellent predicament for a protagonist - is his journey towards life or death? And permanent death not being the worse possible outcome in an action movie is pretty original. Usually this ending would make the hero a martyr (e.g. Armageddon), but in this scenario it's a self-fulfilling act - an excitingly dark prospect for the narrative...Can't wait.

Wasn't one of the big time directors doing that?

cant speak english good!

If I actually sit through a movie where a super soldier dies 158 times before receiving a message from someone they actually call the Full Metal Bitch, I'll die laughing. We have run out of stories people. Full Metal Bitch. What the fuck.
-
Maybe I don't. But Full Metal Bitch is still the dumbest thing I've ever heard...or....read?...all week. talk about trying too hard.
-
damn. i am retarded. because that made no sense.
-
All Your Base Are Belong To Us.
-
If done correctly, this could actually be quite good.
-
I wonder if it's the same girl.
-
It does seem like bad English. All You Need is Murder, or All You Need is Death, make actual sense. Is this a translation problem?
-
zzzzzz
-
That's all I want to say.
-
it could be a live action Naruto directed by that M. Night SHAM-alamadingdong hack. IN 3-D!!!
