Check Out This Trailer For DREW: THE MAN BEHIND THE POSTER!! Lucas, Spielberg, Guttenberg!! And More!!
Merrick here...
Back in June, we previewed Titan's new ART OF DREW STRUZAN book (available for pre-order HERE
). In the coming weeks we hope to bring you further glimpses into that title, as well as host a giveaway of this extremely Geek friendly publication - so stay tuned.
There's also a documentary in the wind about Mr. Struzan - not directly related to the book mentioned above, but clearly touching on the very same subjects and material. A trailer for the film has now gone on line, via STARWARS.COM.
The preview alone features comments from Del Toro, Greg Hildebrandt, producer Michael E. Uslan, Leonard Maltin, Thomas "Vegan Cop" Jane, Spielberg, Darabont, Harrison Ford, Lucas, and even Steve Guttenberg - I can't wait to see how the whole project unfolds.
Even if you don't know Struzan by name, if you've any love of films at all you'll almost certainly recognize his work. And, to folks like me, his contribution to the filmgoing/"Geek" experience is invaluable and unforgettable - I'm delighted to see his impact and legacy receiving so much appreciation.
Apparently DREW: THE MAN BEHIND THE POSTER is still seeking distribution and I deeply hope that it finds its way instead of turning into THE SHARK IS STILL WORKING, an evidently fascinating documentary about the making of JAWS that isn't in wide distribution at the moment (come one, someone...make that happen for these guys!). It recently screened twice in Austin and I was unable to attend either screening - much to my very deep dismay. Really wanted to see that.
More on the Struzan projects soon.

Just picked up a Back to the Future poster
by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks
framed from the markets for 16 aussie bucks. Drew created many of my favorite images... Too many to name.
-
Either the man is ill, or a family of four has made his jugular their new home.
-
He's the poor man's Aaron Eckhart who had a lot of geeks jizzing for a while, but he blew it after The Mist (which I hated) by making KillShot and other unnotable films. The dude needs to fire his agent...but that still won't help him.
-
I would also love to be able to do movie posters for a living. Good shit.
-
Unfortunately, its true. Every good idea Lucas has had since 1981 gas gotten stuck in his neck, and never made it out. An evil toy company executive by the name of Sidious has been speaking for him ever since.
-
I wonder if he can blow it up too
-
bashing the marketing losers that have consistently fucked with his posters in Photoshop for the last decade. Not a huge fan, but that's just bullshit.
-
Is this just going to be famous people saying over and over what a great artist this guy is, intercut with the posters? That's pretty dull.
-
Thomas Jane played an artist in the Mist and the art was painted by
Drew Struzan. Drew is also featured on on the 2-disc Mist dvd.
-
Struzan, sir, you illustrated my childhood with dreams and magic and wonder and I salute you.
-
Thanks for clearing that up.
-
... then he fell into the strange trap of repeating the same design. I'm talking about the black background with the characters arranged around a central panel. It started with The Phantom Menace and it's sequels, continued with the first Harry Potter, and then Hellboy and Indiana Jones IV after them. It got boring!
-
The Star Wars "circus" poster, Temple of Doom, and Crystal Skull. I saw the Goonies one in a store over the weekend, I may pick that one up. Peak, Amsel, and Struzan, god love 'em
-
It's not movie posters, but 200+ names from movies put together in a compilation. 190 films in all. I just finished it Sunday, and this is as good a thread as any to pimp it out.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88zHDUQw8TI
-
was based on Drew Struzan, was it not? And if I;m not mistaken, aren't they good friends?
This looks excellent on par with the best artist documentaries I've seen. I can't wait to see it.
DREW! -
Can put multiple heads on a single poster!

Harrison is high as a kite. Talking about other stuff
by professor_monster
He looks and acts stoned. I'm not sure he even knows he's supposed to be talking about Drew. And Guttenberg??? They must have gotten the people together for this at temple.
-
was based on Drew Struzan, was it not? They cut out all of the boring artist stuff in his life and just focused on the GUNISHMENT he dolled out when he was younger.
-
probably cuz of the Police Academy movies. all their posters were all painted too so if he's in there i guess Drew did them.
-
I love marty's jacket, and I can't remember if he was on a hoverboard, but I liked seeing Christopher lloyd in it, and I always liked the wheels at an angle to show that it was in hover mode.

Can't see this being in the same League as Painting with fire...
by rameses
Frazetta was a Legend and a wild character {Pauli Walnuts' actor from the Sopranos should play him in a docudrama}Drew is a great talent , but comes across like a hairdresser and his art borders on Photo montage. And as for the Mist , the lead character was the hardest fuckin graphic designer I've ever seen .He came across like he was an ex special ops.Drew {and most artists/designers including myself} looks like he'd scream like a little girl if giant spiders came after him.
-
One of the greatest film posters of all time.
-
is it a medical thing?
-
Since it seemed to be satirising the types of heroic posters Struzen had been doing up till that point.
-
Each year it gets bigger and more awe inspiring.Has a mad scientist spliced his DNA with a bullfrogs or something.Has there ever been an explaination? Or are peaple just meant to pretend its not there.
-
thats for sure....with all his money can he not fix it?
-
But yes, this looks awesome.

I'm not being sarcastic. I actually really enjoy watching book trailers.
-
but this isn't a trailer for a book, Roy.
At any rate, I always said that if I could have any living artist as a mentor, it would be Drew. I'm ready to see this now. -
All of his art looks pretty much the same.
-
made my mind up about lucas. money just went to his head.sounds like he worked his ass off working on draft after draft of new hope, but after that got fat, lazy and controlling. marcia left him 82/83 which says alot.
-
Richard Amsel and Bruce Wolfe did.
-
Even though everyone peed their pants for a 2 second Darth Vader scene?
-
Just kidding, of course. Other artists do some tracing but Struzan brings much more to his work than they do.
-
am i the the only one who thinks the vader footage is cut scenes from revenge of the sith intercut with a 'real' scene with luke. and new v.o. from james earl jones?
-
Does anyone know if/where I can purchase a print of Struzan's Dark Tower painting that Jane was working on in THE MIST?
Oh and George Lucas's neck made me roar with laughter in that trailer. -
he'll sorly be missed and likely never replaced. RIP dude
-
Orange and shiny.Oddly Harrison ford's nose is just as orange and shiny as Drew painted it.
-
A Goyder on the neck can be drained from time to time. That's why it seems to shrink and grow. If it ever pops, it floods the bloodstream with a very toxic fluid. It's hasta la vista, baby, see you on the other side.
-
He just likes to take credit for nolan's Batman films without actually contributing much
-
final cut poster. ford looks like a sad clown.
who did the empire one sheet that had luke on the tauntaun and han and leia in the 'gone with the wind' pose? -
And it got stuck in his neck
-
And he don't gotta eat.
-
Might wanna see a doctor about that thyroid problem. Seriously.
-
Got an Empire Strike Back poster that he signed at the first Star Wars Celebration framed on the wall.
-
Was by artist Roger Kasel. He painted the classic Jaws poster.

I SWEAR, LUCAS NEVER HAS AN INSIGHTFUL THING TO SAY EVER
by bringingsexyback
Yet he plays it off like he does. Shut up. "He takes a character and makes it interesting." Yeah. Something you know nothing about.
-
the greatest concept artist of all time!!!
-
he contributed so much.
-
Just wondering.
-
Well said, Sir, I say well said!
-
His designs for Darth Vader ,Stormtroopers and Boba Fett.. as well as visualizing Joe Johnstones Falcon and Tie/X wing designs ,are some of the greatest pre production work in cinema history.Without him the prequels suffered badly. That asian guy , who designed the prequels, failed to come up with one decent iconic image!.
-
Come and star in my Batman 3 movie, Gutters! It's being made in a union between my production company and the studio that just announced a $70 Terminator movie without having any rights.
-
That Asian guy only worked on TPM, and his name was Doug Chaing. He also worked on the Special Editions.
-
This looks like a puff piece describing how great he is, not a movie. I'd rather know about the dark side of his life, the real story not just a description of why he's so good...
-
I am not saying Drew does bad art, but it is just the painting version of a Photoshop Heads type poster. I miss the days when movie poster art was really special, like Richard Amsel did.
-
To be fair to Doug Chiang, if you see his earliest prequel work, his art style looked very much like McQuarrie's, but he was told by Lucas they didn't want that look anymore since this was a different era and should have different looking things in it. He did try... obviously Doug thought that was the proper look for Star Wars, too.
-
http://home.scarlet.be/~bliek/ It has some links on it too to ther sites for other items besides movie posters. I've had these bookmarked for years, but clicking around it just now I found out he did the "Toledo Window Box" on Carlin's shirt for the famous album cover!!
-
I think it's GREAT that Struzan is getting this kind of recognition. I've felt very privileged to have actually had the small chance to communicate with Mr. Struzan by E-mail (twice, years ago, so I seriously doubt he'd remember), asking about the new Star Wars poster and dumb questions about illustration board before I really knew what it was. The trailer here, though... if they want distribution, they're going to need to change the tone. Here we've got all these celebrities singing Struzan's praises, but the music suggests, of all things, a SOMBER TONE... Why? I guess they might think it's appropriately reverent and respectful, but I don't think it's going to win fans. Of course, if you're gerritt44, then you change everything in the trailer BUT the music. Frankly, though, I think the only reason to focus on the dark side of the life you're celebrating is if there's some lesson there, but even though everyone has their problems, most people (i.e., general audiences) barely know who Struzan is, and from what I've heard, Struzan is a happily-married Christian. Some of you guys might call that "dark" - suggesting an artist brainwashed by religion and imprisoned in an outdated institution not worth fighting for unless you're gay - I don't know, but I doubt it would come across that way, or be something people would WANT to see about an otherwise popular person they never or have barely heard of.
-
I bought it off the fan club years ago.
-
His work has always been mentioned as the visual push it took to get Star Wars even made. Look for a lot more of his work in the upcoming Empire Strikes Back book. BTW, Empire magazine has a nice insert in the current issue.
-
come on you guys, are you feeling well?
-
I accept what you say about Doug Chang , (though I assumed for some reason he worked on all three prequels...because they all have a much of the same look} But the idea that *everything* in the prequels ,needed to have a different look just seems odd.I thought the whole point of the technology in New Hope , was that it was old and outdated .The m Falcon is meant to be very old , yet nothing in the prequels had that gritty textured look and theyre not set that far in the past.
-
It wouldn't be wise to speak ill of someone inflicted with a debilitating disease. Everyone else in that video is fair game.
-
Because when the Empire took control everything became run down and used. When the Republic was in control everything was bright and new.
-
you are being a complete dick. fuck off.
-
drew is a legend..if you dont agree...go fuck yourself.
-
Why don't you learn some facts about movie before you make up shit?
-
Matter of fact, it continues to fuck me up as an adult too. :)
-
...but using that logic you should be seeing either clean looking X-wings /Y-fighters in phantom Menace , or Rusted down and dirty looking , Naboo Queen style ships in New Hope. The whole look of the craft changed even though the Falcon / X wings etc was meant to be very old in New Hope
-
I totally agree about the Blade Runner poster....it looked like Kabuki Harrison Ford. I'm not sure if Struzan was trying to hint that Ford was a replicant with that poster, but it never really looked right. He has another less popular Blade Runner poster which is much better, though.
-
The trailer is just a list of people singing his praises. I get that they love the guy, hopefully we get more into Struzan's process and not just an hour and a half of people repeating how awesome he is.
-
I have a signed print from Drew! He's a cool dude. I think it odd there's a movie about THIS guy and not say, the Hildebrandts. but whatever.
-
Didn't the Jedi Starfighters look kind of like TIE Fighters? Didn't the Republic Cruisers kinda look like Star Desteoyers? Didn't the Clone Troopers look like Stormtroopers? I know I saw landspeeders on Tatooine. Did you watch the same movie?
-
Since you know jack shit about absolutely nothing.
-
Yeah whatever buddy. I bet I have more people hating me than hate you.
-
To drive people crazy. Me, I'm a nice guy. I don't want to hate, or be hated. But your schtick just drives me right up the goddamn wall, as I'm sure is your intent. Why, tho? I really don't understand why you do this. Do you really chuckle to yourself when people respond to your idiocy? Because there's a whole wide world out there, and plenty of 'authentic' amusement to be had.
-
Why don't you take that stick out of your ass and live a little you pretentious little bag of shit.
-
Are you trying to tell me that you're actually being SERIOUS when you post? Because I don't believe that for a second. No one could be as willfully, aggressively ignorant as you appear to be. Ok, I'm done with you for today. See you tomorrow, pally.
-
This is a web movie news site. It's for serious people like you Mr. Stick up his ass.
-
From his site:
"The ultimate in artistic terror! Universal calls one day and asks: 'Are you willing to do a poster for 'The Thing' to be delivered first thing in the morning?' They said they had no reference material, no concept, no idea. Same basic story as the original '51 film, we trust you, we'll have it picked up first thing in the morning if you can do it. One day and night to conceive from out of the blue and to paint it as well. He did it and it was done so quickly and picked up so early that as it went straight to the seperators for printing, the acrylic paint was still wet and stuck to the glass at the seperator's. Don't ask what is the standard way of doing business in the industry, there is no standard way."

-
That's all I've been trying to get you to admit all this time. I still don't see how you get any entertainment out of posing as an idiot. Unless, I guess, you are an idiot posing as an even bigger idiot. Either way, have fun being mocked and ridiculed by virtually everybody else on this site, loser.
-
Wow, you sound like every asshole I ever knew in school.
-
Get ready for some more swirlies, moron. By the way, that statement makes absolutely no sense, but I'm sure you are quite aware of that, you fucking monkey.
-
Every asshole in school belittled you for being a complete and utter idiot and being unrepentantly ignorant. The 'assholes' were everybody smarter than you. That makes complete sense now, sorry.
-
Just let me know.
-
Look, I know you're a huge asshole. you don't talk about anything other than yourself. I'm glad you enjoyed that shit Scott Pilgrim this weekend.
-
God damn your worthless ass to hell, you pathetic piece of shit. Jerk off to that, you fucking loser.
-
You first asshole.

Seriously, is that movie EVER going to get released?
- Big Drew fan BTW :) -
Just beat the living SHIT outta RPLocke! Haha Nice going bro. I rag on that little wanker every chance i get. What a miserable little bitch that guy is... Jeebus
-
Richard Amsel. Here is a small sampling of his work, and by small I mean this guy did hundreds of posters:
http://adammcdaniel.com/RichardAmsel2b.htm
Check out the other categories too. This guy was the master that Drew tried to live up to. -
Acrylic paint should have been dry by the time it got to where it's going. Cool story but probably "enhanced"
-
poster, you can clearly see in the wall the poster of the Thing.i dont remember what movie was the other poster.nice small tribute to this guy.
-
although I sadly have it on good authority that the man himself is a complete tool. But the work's what matters, and that's what will endure, and for that alone he'll genuinely leave his mark as a late 20th/early 21st century great.
-
I thought that ,acrylics dry in minutes {unless a retarding gel agent is added}Plus does Drew even use acrylics , he tends to do a lot of detailing with colouring pencils , they don't take well on an acrylic base coat.
-
Acrylics make sense for an illustrator because of the fast drying time. Even with a retarder it shouldn't take that long. And if you were to use a lot of retarder, then the point of using acrylics in the first place is defeated.
-
most of those films is that somehow they just managed to nail everything. The film, story, actors but then the music, these posters. You just rarely see that these days.
I love how they added on bits to the Back to the Future posters with each film. Sublime work. -
