Jason Flemyng and Rose Byrne in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here freshly returned from a pretty crazy awesome double feature at the Alamo Drafthouse... it was a night hosted by Joe Bob Briggs who presented his favorite Preston Sturges movie Miracle of Morgan Creek and then '80s classic THE LAST DRAGON. As a betting man, I'd put a few bucks on that particular double feature ever running back to back in 35mm. Fun night and then I get back to find this little tidbit from Jason Flemyng's own mouth. SuperHeroHype has the story from Movie-Con. Flemyng confirmed he's in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class. Not a big leap as Flemyng has been in most of Vaughn's films, but the interesting part is WHO he will be playing. I had stopped reading current Marvel books by the time Azazel was introduced, so it came as a surprise to me that Flemyng was going to play Nightcrawler's papa. I'm a big, big fan of Jason Flemyng... he's one of my favorite working character actors... so I'm excited to see him play around in the X-verse.

To add on to the X-Men casting Borys Kit at THR says that Rose Byrne (most recently seen in GET HIM TO THE GREEK) is in talks to play Moira MacTaggert, the love interest of James McAvoy's Charles Xavier. You may remember Olivia Williams played her in X3.

What a bizarre cast, right? Right now it's James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Jason Flemyng, Jennifer Lawrence and, possibly, Rose Byrne. Looking forward to seeing where the film goes from here. Got my fingers crossed we end up with with a decent X-Men flick. -Quint Follow Me On Twitter

Is this a prequel or not? Let the cat out of the bag and tell us what this is about already. Part of a successful advertising campaign is to let the populace in on what is going on with some kind of teaser or some kind of plot outline. Look at Nolan's Batman series for this or even the early Avengers trailer shown at Comic-Con. We know nothing about this and everyone is getting so F'ing frustrated that by the time this thing actually comes out, no one is going to give a rat's ass anymore. Just reboot this thing. Prequels are a bad idea because the audience knows where the characters are going to end up. How can we emotionally invest in characters like say, Cyclops who is nothing more than a pussy whipped wimp in the original trilogy who eventually gets killed off screen in the abomination of a film called the Last Stand. Listen to the fans Fox and reboot this bitch with the original team. And while your at it, put them in some kind of semblance of their original costumes. If your too embarrassed by the material to do it right, then don't do it at all. Superman, Spiderman and many other comic characters have appeared in their comic book costumes on screen and it worked. Wake up Fox and do this right. That is all.

Can't say I'm excited about this

    by lochkray

I really liked the first triology (Part III's flaws stop me from loving it, though I don't hate that movie), but that Wolverine movie kinda showed that you can't keep going back to the well. As already pointed out, prequels don't normally work. The only option is to move forwards, and approach the subject in some new and radical way. But, as is typical, they will keep going back to the well over and over, until people lose interest, and the series is reduced to direct to dvd sequels of the whole damned thing. Even something as well done as XMen can be reduced to the equivellent of the Police Academy series.

Wasn't Azazel created by Chuck Austen? Worst fucking X-Men writer ever. I hope to god they're not using his shitty run on X-Men as a basis for this movie or anything.

    It's a prequel to Singer's Xmen

    by DrRumpledink

Thought that was obvious. Singer is producing and wrote the story which Jane Goodman and co are basing the screenplay on.

    Wrong, RighteousBrother

    by DrRumpledink

It's new actors yes, but it's definitely a prequel to Singer's 2 XMen movies. He stepped down from directing to produce it. Where are you getting your latest word from?

pikazerox, don't think they are counting X3

    by DrRumpledink

as part of the cannon. Rick Marshall at MTV spoke with Vaughn and directly asked the director if X-Men: First Class is a true prequel to the X-Men trilogy. “Yeah, I would say absolutely so… You’ve got Magneto and [Charles] Xavier when they first meet… The backdrop of what’s going on in the world when they first meet, it’s very interesting. You see them and their relationship develop and play out with this major political event in the background.”
and to IGN he said about singer's story they are using. “The story that Bryan Singer came up with is very, very smart… It’s very clever when you see how he has integrated the characters into the time period where the film is set. I’ll put it that way. I just don’t want to give it away. … It’s a very clever way of getting these characters involved in recent history, in recent world events.”

If it's a reboot why aren't they usiing the actual first X-Men class instead of cherry picking random mutants?

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 3:54 a.m. CST

Agreed: Fassbender is an awesome talent

    by palimpsest

He was phenomenal in HUNGER (though I had issues with the film itself) and hard as nails in CENTURION.

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 4:06 a.m. CST

This could be VERY good indeed

    by FloristGump

There's some exciting talent in there, and Vaughan has proved he can do comic book confidently and competently (although Kick Ass is a million miles from X-Men in tone) Fingers crossed we get a film (like Scott Pilgrim, though in a totally different style) that translates the kinetic energy of the comic book onto the screen. Oh, and the old mid-80's X-Men banter, around issues 185 - 215 when Wolvie, Colossus and Nightcrawler used to do normal things like go out on the piss and throw banter at each other - that wouldn't go amiss either.

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 4:38 a.m. CST

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 6:14 a.m. CST

I wonder if Flemyng is jealous of Statham?

The two broke Hollywood with the same movie but Statham gets to have his name underneath Stallone's and headline movies, whilst Flemyng is left playing small parts. Still, i guess he's glad that he's at least working.
Could be worse. He could be Dexter Fletcher.

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 6:27 a.m. CST

    by Flibbertygibbet

What's the chronology here? If First Class is supposed to inhabit the same world as Singer's films, is it set between Wolverine:Origins and the first X-Men? If so, Xavier already knows Logan, so there's no reason why he can't be in the background somewhere. Whether you feel Hugh Jackman should be involved is up to you, but my feeling is they'd recast someone cheaper, not to mention probably British.

If things are going to tie in like they appear to be in the movie-verse version of x-men, wolverine can't appear in this, as he was not known to them when he is brought to the mansion in x-men 1. It would make sense that this movie will take place around the same time as the proposed wolverine sequel is going to be - while he is in Japan.

So Banshee, Darwin, Emma Frost, Mr. Sinister and Azazel?

    by mortsleam

THe shame is that they had a pretty good comic to work from. X-Men: First Class told stories set in the early days with Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Beast and Angel in a faithful, yet modern style. There was a real sense of cameraderie, the characterization was spot-on, the costumes were updated yet recognizable, and best of all, they were teens who were actually learning to use their powers. So do we get that? Do we get a classy rebot which resets the horrendous shredded continuity of the previous x-films and reintroduces to the core team? No. We get an irish stereotype from the late 60's, a black albino showhorned into continuity a few years ago, a rich new engalnd bitch who will turn into diamonds even tho she didn't gain that ability till 2001, a ridiculous overblown late 90's villain who looks like a Freddie Mercury wardrobe mishap, and the fucking 'Devil' as Nightcrawler's father in, hands down, the stupidest story ever published under the X-Men banner.
Rose Byrne as Moira is amazing tho. Good work.

Um, I like her better as an adult authority figure, but ok. Darwin? Uh, sure, I guess that's fine. Azazel? Fucking Azazel? The worst character introduced in the worst story in the worst run by the worst writer of X-Men comics ever? Sigh, I guess I'll be over here waiting for Spider-man updates (at least until they announce roles for Kaine and Mephisto)

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 9:59 a.m. CST

    as for Wolverine

    by AKA_Gern_Blanston

Much as I love the character, it would be nice to see an X-Men movie NOT make him the center of attention. Seriously, with him not in it we can finally focus on some of the other characters.
That said, remember it's called First Class. About Professor X first establishing the Xavier school and the X-Men. Storywise, Wolvie shouldn't show up until much, much later. You're NOT going to see Wolvie in this film. Won't happen - unless Fox pulls a Sony and forces the character upon them ala Venom.

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 10:04 a.m. CST

    as for the prequel/reboot debate

    by AKA_Gern_Blanston

Yes Singer is shepherding/producing, but this film, in Fox's eyes, is a reboot. Period. You really think after this they will go back and make an X-Men 4 with the old cast? I want some of what you're smoking, as that cast would be really old by the time it ever got off the ground, and Halle Berry has pretty much disappeared.
Fox sees this as a relaunch, and I guarantee if this makes money you'll see a sequel with the new cast. It's in the sequel that you'll likely see the introduction of Wolverine, the way Nolan waited until the sequel to bring in the Joker even though everyone was clamoring for him when Begins was first announced.
If you think for one minute this is a one-off prequel, you're just not thinking.

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 10:07 a.m. CST

    That said

    by AKA_Gern_Blanston

I look forward to this film, although with hesitation. I'm glad Singer's back in the X-Men fold, but since he left the franchise he's made Superman Returns and Valkyrie, both awful films on several levels (though a lot of Valkyrie's forgettableness can be attributed to Tom Cruise and his "german" accent). Not a good track record and I think he needs to prove himself a little with this.
As for Matthew Vaughan, I was worried about him, as Layer Cake and Stardust were decent, but it didn't scream "give him X-Men". Then I saw Kick-Ass on blu ray last week, and I believe in him now. Every scene with Hit Girl was so much fun to watch, and the humor was good without hitting you over the head. I think they got a good guy for this reboot.

at least AICN hasn't dropped the ball with this news the way they have with the Karl Urban cast as an R-rated, never takes off his helmet Judge Dredd. Seriously, guys, da fuck? After the soul-crushing feebleness of X3 and Wolverine it is really hard for me to scare up any excitement for another X-Men movie, be it prequel or reboot. Wolverine 2, if it ever gets made, will probably suck as much if not more than the first, regardless of where it is set. Also, Hugh Jackman is getting too old to play a young Wolvie.

He's the only survivor of a 2nd group of x-men. The 1st being the original four, and the 3rd being the international team (wolverine, storm, colosus, etc) Hi has "instant evolution" in that he can adapt to any embiroment instantly. I'm surprising myself with my nediness here

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 11:30 a.m. CST

    Darwin (in the comics)

    by mortsleam

Is an albino african who has the ability to adapt his powers to any threat. So if he falls in water, he develops gills to breath underwater. He showed up in the "Deadly Genesis" storyline, where they randomly introduced Scott Summer's long-lost younger brother Vulcan and said he, Darwin and two anonymous chicks were actually the second generation X-Men team, who were killed trying to save the original X-Men from Krakoa. Then Xavier went and recruited Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Colossus and never told anybody for years. Let's hope they don't follow that storyline...

    by paburrows

Along with what Argentino & mortsleam said, Krakoa killed the two hirls in the team and so Darwin evolved himself and Vulcan the third Summers brother into a space rock or something and was stuck that way for years until Scarlet Witch did the "No more Mutants" which somehow caused Darwin to return to a human form and if I remember correctly Profesor X separated Darwin & Vulcan and when Scott found out about the secret Summers thatere was a huge rift caused between Scott and Xavier. Darwin can adapt to cercopmstances, but he can't control the power.

I've not heard anything about this that sounds good.

    by Chewtoy

I know fans of Vaughn are jazzed by each announcement, but the cast all seems off and the characters they are casting are some of the worst in X-men lore, and completely unrelated to each other. It feels like an incredibly random mess right now, and each casting announcement just make it seem worse. I have to agree with the others making a call for some clarity on what the hell this project actually is.

it's really the Wolverine movie that screws up continuity

    by oisin5199

Since they never actually say her name in the movie, I thought they could get away with saying that the 'diamond girl' was just Silverfox's sister, and not Emma Frost. In the credits, she's listed as Kayla's Sister/Emma. But in those goofy little promotional films they did with the characters giving monologues, she says her name is Emma Frost. Damn it! So now, I want to know whether she's going to be a Xavier student, or a rival teacher. Are they going to go with the Wolverine movie origin and just have her be a diamond girl with a messed up background being experimented on? Or are they going to retcon it and give her Kayla's ability as well or make her another telepath. In that case, will Jean Grey be on the team as well and you'll have two telepathic women warring for Scott's affections. I just wish they hadn't shoehorned Patrick Stewart into Wolverine, or done that flashback in X3 of recruiting Jean with Stewart and McKellen. Will McAvoy do a bald cap? I really think they're just better off rebooting. But you couldn't possibly do that and still do the Wolverine in Japan sequel, or even the Deadpool spinoff. So I guess they're trying to have it both ways. We'll see if it works. But no X-Men film will truly fly until Rothman is out of there.

Black Tom Cassidy = Jason Flemyng

    by dailysportspages

Works out better since we most likely will be getting some sort of UK scenes in First Class.
Moira McTaggart is in this and she is Scottish and also the silent partner helping Xavier created his school for gifted youngsters. And Black Tom has had plenty of stories related to Muir Island, the setting of most of Moira's storylines.
Banshee is Irish and he's been confirmed, and is also a blood relative of Black Tom.
Darwin is also being included, as is one of the Summers brothers... both being students of Moira in Muir Island.
Sinister is rumored, and he is British as well, plus his desire for genetic experimentation also takes him to Muir Island and Moiras mutants in some storylines.
Being that the directer is Matthew Vaughn i have a pretty good hunch that we are going to see a lot of the UK aspects of X-Men.
Maybe even some eXcalibur, hey wasnt that team based out of Muir Island?
Does that mean we get some Captrain Britain and some Pete Wisdom, or better yet some Wolfsbane?

This movie will FAIL even with Vaughn directing it.

    by Thanos0145

Azazel??????WTF, a terrible character created by a terrible writer from the X-Men's comic low point.
It figures FOX would want to use unimportant, and useless characters into thier reboot/prequel movie.
Vaughn should've just agreed to direct the Wolverine sequel instead.

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 3:56 p.m. CST

Will Wolverine be appearing in X-Men:First Class?

    by Thanos0145

I say yes. FOX isn't going to leave the most popular X-Men out.

    by catlettuce4

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 4:07 p.m. CST

    by catlettuce4

What the project actually is: more random mutants tossed together by Fox so they can hopefully make a lot more money and also keep the rights to make X-films a little longer.

Yeah, Diane Kruger is hot. But it's ridiculous that Rose Byrne would be cast as the girl less hot in TWO movies (Troy and Wicker Park). Rose Byrne FTW!

Apparently they start filming in 3 weeks...

by Chewtoy I guess there aren't actually going to be any X-men in this film... At least no students for Xavier. It's way too close to filming to cast any major roles, so I'm not sure who the "first class" is going to be, unless they just show up at the very end.

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 5:27 p.m. CST

    Someone should sabotage the set

    by mortsleam

Just cause problem after problem until they're forced to shut down production. And keep on it, until Fox is unable to make another X-Movie and the rights revert to Marvel and we see the X-Men "First Class" we're all looking for.

    ShiftyEyedDog2 :

    by Goregazer

Out of all the character design changes made over the 3 X-movies, the one thing they would have to get as close to comic-accurate is Frost/Queen. I mean, her costume is essential. Changing her "look" would be like Rogue with no stripe, a non-blue Nightcrawler, a fucking Wolverine with a claw on each finger instead of the..well, you know. I keep an open mind with these movies, but I DEMAND a comic-accurate White Queen! Yes, I am a dirty old man.

Anyone who defends X3 but bashes Valkyrie is...

    by andrew coleman

A MORON! "Tom Cruises bad German accent"... Did you even see the movie you fucking idiot? No one spoke in German accents because they tuned it out in the beginning. Like The Thirteenth Warrior where he listened to them speak and picked up on and then could understand them. Well they did that effect in like the first minute of the movie. If you didn't catch on to that you're an idiot. X3 is horrible on literally every level. Wolverine at least had one good action scene. The final battle in X3 was something created by the syfy channel. Seriously Warehouse 13 does better.

    The casting for this movie

    by Dawhiteguy

Is getting more weird as it gets ever closer to production. Oliver Platt is a character called "The Man in Black" while Vaughn expressed that Kevin Bacon will be the first official villain not in league with Magneto in a movie, so i hope and presume. While also making him sound very epic.

  • Aug. 17, 2010, 12:01 a.m. CST

    by Dawhiteguy

One could only presume that Nightcrawler would already be born in this movie. If so, Mystique will be a super villain, with kid at home, that she will- beyond any doubt- give up.

    1. I like the cast so far
2. matthew vaughn's layer cake and Kick ass are solid as fuck movies that are directed brilliantly. He's a great man for the job
3. I like Singer is involved as producer. I enjoyed both of his efforts a lot.
4. Can never have enough xmen on the big screen in my opinion. Yeah it's been a bit hit and miss over the series so far, but if we get more than a couple of great xmen movies out of it then I don't give a flying fuck about the ones that were shit. It's a great source to make some pretty entertaining films from. Keep bashing em out I say and roll on next year!

    by W3bzpinn3r

Lessee... Making tons of money while the other networks are tanking. Has two shows who have a viewership in one day what the other networks can't get in a week. Hmmmmm... whether you agree with them or not, calling someone Fox News as an insult is like saying, "You are such a rich, successful person whose views agree with the majority of people." Good job. No cuddly stuffed monkey for you.
