The Star Wars Saga coming to Blu-Ray in 2011!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here.

In an interview with the New York Times The Lucas himself announced all 6 Star Wars films are coming to Blu-Ray next year. Don't get all out of breath just yet. This release seems to mirror the DVD releases in that you're getting the 2004 clean-ups of the 1997 Special Editions with a hint that a future release may include the restored original releases. Initially my ire was raised as Lucas said that releasing the original trilogy un-cartoonified was "“kind of an oxymoron because the quality of the original is not very good.” But those cheeky monkeys at the NYT knew what they were doing. My weave was out and my knuckles were cracked. I was screaming out, "lemme at 'im! lemme at 'im" when I read a little further and saw that Lucas wasn't badmouthing the original releases (his usual M.O.), but that there would have to be a big restoration done to get a high def master. And he's also stopped calling the originals "workprints" instead referring to them as the "classic versions." His reasoning at not releasing them at the same time was the time and expense of doing full restorations of the original materials was prohibitive and as such the "recent releases get priority over what we call 'the classic' version of things." If he flat out said he was going to take the SE Star Wars Blu-Ray sales money and feed that right into the high def restorations of the original trilogy that would include a Blu-Ray release that has every option you could ever want (THX or original stereo sound, cleaned up matte lines or original see-through snowspeeders, etc) then put me down for two double-dip copies of the SE Blu. So, bummer, but there's at least a new hope at getting a real version of the Original Trilogy remastered (not the laserdisc transfers from the last round of DVDs). The upcoming Blu release will include never-before-seen footage and massive documentary features. The rest is unclear at this point. Update There was a big unveiling at Star Wars Celebration V of one of the new deleted scenes that will be a part of the Blu-Ray release's special features. Pretty awesome... new moment from the beginning of Return of the Jedi... Luke's original entrance. See it before it's pulled:

IGN.UK has a full report from the event here. There will be deleted scenes you've never seen like the above and they'll be kept out of the cuts, special features only. Thanks to wackybantha and Cobra--Kai in the talkbacks for the heads up! End of Update Since we're still talking about Star Wars, I'd like to point you over to a great article at The Hero Complex blog about original Star Wars and Empire producer Gary Kurtz. The article has Kurtz discussing his split with Lucas and the Return of the Jedi that almost was. You'll learn the original fate of Han Solo and the originally conceived bittersweet ending that sounds, frankly, pretty spectacular. And this is coming from an unrepentant lover of RotJ. -Quint Follow Me On Twitter

Bluray maybe too detailed for the first three Star Wars.

    by Orionsangels

If they're doing a restoration. They may wanna go back and fix the transparent matte boxes that outline some of the ships in the first three films. They showed up in the 2004 DVDs and you can bet your ass they'll appear in this release, unless Lucas decides to fix it. Oh and he better include those rare deleted scenes, like Han Solo and the alien chick in the Mos Eisley Cantina. The Wampa attack at the Hoth base. The sandstorm scene in ROTJ. If not I won't even bother getting it. Give me some incentive to buy the collection again for the fifteenth time!

I can be happy with the ones I have, and stop paying Lucas for the same thing over and over again, until he lets Speilberg direct the next three, and brings Kasdan back to write them.

ROTJ does not exist in this dojo

    by Cobra--Kai

The below is more detailed from :<p> Speaking about what will be included, Lucas said, "They'll be different kinds of additional material," adding, "I think you've seen enough behind the scenes [material] for a lifetime. There's some really good material that will be included in there, [including] more deleted scenes that you haven't seen yet." Lucas said these newly released scenes would be kept separate from the film itself. <p> In a surprise appearance, Mark Hamill then joined Lucas and Stewart on stage, to introduce one of the new deleted scenes, which he said was his "original entrance" in Return of the Jedi. Hamill noted the scene was short, but that it was for the UPFs in the audience – the "ultra passionate fans." <p> We were then shown the scene, which would have taken place after Darth Vader arrives on the second Death Star at the beginning of Return of the Jedi. We see Vader walking down a corridor and into an elevator on the Death Star. We then cut to Vader inside his medication chamber, a la Empire Strikes Back. As Vader sits there, the camera moves into a close-up and we hear him reaching out with the Force. "Luke. Luke. Join me in the dark side of the Force. My son. It is the only way." <p> As Vader continues to repeat Luke's name, we cut to a tight close-up of Luke, insinuating he is hearing his father's voice. it's a very ominous shot of Luke, who is wearing his cloak and hood, with the shadows from the hood blocking out his eyes completely - in line with how Darth Sideous' face is mostly hidden. As Vader's voice fades away, the camera pans down to Luke's hands, and we see that he is using a tool to complete work on his new lightsaber. Satisfied, he puts the tool down and holds the lightsaber hilt up, igniting it – in what would have been the first reveal of the green blade.

More copy and pasting...<p> Lucasfilm's official press release for the Blu-rays. It confirms that all six movies are being released on Blu-ray and that the set is coming out Fall 2011 - so don't line up just yet! We're also told it will include, "documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives."

    Orionsangels - matte boxes

    by ObiBen

Matte boxes are mostly due to the difference level and range differences between film and TV signal. Film has way more dynamic range than TV, so this why these matte boxes are less visible when projected in theatres. Apparently, Bluray has a 16 bits color depth, so this should actually attenuate them.

SW & Empire YES, Jedi.. NO!

    by CeejayNightwing

The only way I'm ever buying ROTJ again is if included in a box set, the film has been and always will be the point SW went straight down hill. As for the Blu Ray of the originals being the special edition only versions, well I can wait till they finish restoring the originals. Those special editions were far from special. They need to take a look at Adywans "Star Wars Revisited" version of ANH as well as his current work on "The Empire Strikes Back Revisited" in order to get a idea how to do a proper "Special Edition"! The only way I'd spend a penny on those releases is if Lucasfilm/Fox allow a part trade-in for the previous bought DVD's or VHS's. I'm sure we all have enough SW home video versions lying around gathering dust that we don't need! The prequel Trilogy I will buy simply because even though they're terrible movies, they will look good on Blu Ray for the sake of a entertaining spectacle!

  • Aug. 14, 2010, 2:12 p.m. CST

    by Cobra--Kai

They definitely should have left that deleted scene in the movie.<p> At it's core ROTJ is about Luke and Vader and that set's up the theme of the movie from the start, rather than the 40 odd minutes of Jabba stuff (which is kinda irrelevant to the central drama).

  • Aug. 14, 2010, 2:12 p.m. CST

Sounds like we need a fan film based on this ending...

    by br1947

Great plan - release both versions.

    by kevred

Release all the latest and greatest for all the people who've become aware of them and enjoyed them since the prequels. Then release the untouched originals for all the people who fell in love with them and helped Lucas build his empire.<p>Everybody wins. The anti-Lucas shouts quiet down. Easy!

Love the deleted scene! Would like to see it in the film.

    by kevred

Something about the shadowy Luke, almost echoing the Emperor's appearance, then out pops his GREEN it.<p>Over the years, the whole Jabba part of the film hold less allure for me - too long, almost like the whole pod-racing nonsense. It's the part after their escape that I like the most, and this little scene nicely connects the Jabba bit to that vibe.

  • Aug. 14, 2010, 2:24 p.m. CST

That should definitely go back in.

    by kwisatzhaderach

As Cobra says it nicely sets up the theme of the movie. And it works even more knowing the story of the prequels.

The ONLY WAY Lucas will get any more money from me is....

    by King Conan

He does the Heir to the Empire trilogy, ANIMATED ala Beowulf, using the ORIGINAL actors voices who would ALL probably do it because they are all desperate for work and to get back on top of the media spotlight ESPECIALLY Harrison Ford which is why he went back to Indiana in the first place. Do this Lucas, and me my wife and my two kids will be there with popcorn in hand giving you our money.

That cut scene is simply incredible. Though, I'm not sure if it would have fit well into the film. Still awesome though. And while I like Kurtz's version of Luke walking off into the sunset, killing Han Solo halfway through the movie would've been awful and made the entire rescue mission at Jabba's pointless. Imagine if they went through all that to save Han and he died 30 minutes later in the movie. Lame.

Empire Strikes Back S.E. was the only decent one

    by MattmanReturns

The background CG enhanced Cloud City, rather than distracting from it with a bunch of stupid cartoon creatures. Shame the other two films have dinosaurs and a dance number. I also love the tatooine/coruscant/naboo celebration scenes in Jedi... but now that's followed by young Anakin smiling like he just got laid. The S.E.'s are such a mixed bag.

    by Bouncy X

i'm not a huge "star wars changed my life" fan, i just enjoy the movies. while some moments are stupid (the jedi musical number), the special editions are still 99% the same movies so i dont need the "original originals". sounds like this release will include enough to satisfy me. all 6 movies and some cool extras. and since i only own the original VHS trilogy box, the 2004 dvd box and i've never bought any of the prequels, its not like i'm buying these for the millioneth time. but they say the OT will be the 2004 editions, so what about the PT? will they be redone at all, i'm thinking specifically about the replacement of the Episode 1 puppet Yoda. either way this version is good enough for me. lucas didnt rape my childhood so i'm not all angry about simple movies. plus at least he's warned that another version will come. so those of you who bitch for no reason can avoid buying the 2011 release and wait.....of course eveyone knows they wont. :P

    by King Conan

I just mean I think the general public doesn't hold a soft spot for the rest of the star wars universe, old republic, republic commandos, clone wars etc so they will always see it as a cash grab. I do think Lucas should hand the reigns over to another director and let him continue the adventures of luke, leia, han, chewie etc. Those are the only characters we really care about. I think most people continue to support the star wars franchise strictly out of blind love and devotion to those first three great movies. I mean besides knowing what happened to the orignal characters after ROTJ all we ever wanted to know was how Boba Fett became a legendary bounty hunter and Lucas had a chance to explain that with the prequels and he even fucked that up. I would dare to say people watched the prequels more in hopes of finding out more about Boba's background than Vaders.

I feel your pain regarding the Jaws Blu-Ray... or lack thereof. Don't go blaming Spielberg for The Shark Is Still Working, though. He saw the finished documentary and gave it his stamp of approval. It's Universal that's holding that one up. Of course, I'm sure if Spielberg really strong-armed the studio we'd have seen it by now, but you can't expect him to do that for a fan documentary. At least I don't.

Looking forward to this big time, especially with all the new footage they are finding. I have the originals on VHS and on the DVD Laserdisc transfer and am happy with those. If the silly puppets, silly musical scene, silly pig-guards, and silly Fett death were all removed, I'd like it more. I imagine something more in line with the original Cantina scene and its sense of menace.<p>But you're absolutely right about the Bond comparison, the mini-adventure that gives us resolution to a long-running side plot.<p>There were a lot of terrific things in that part of the film. I think I just get annoyed by the less-than-terrific parts - I wasn't used to a Star Wars film having any less-than-terrific parts!

    by rabidfnark

I loved the OT (oh sure, there are some problems but that's for another day), I enjoyed the Prequels in an "Oh cool, lightsabers!" kind of way, I liked some of the books (didn't read too many, but enough to know that there's some talent in there). I am also enjoying the Clone Wars animated series a lot more than I thought I would. I hold out hope for the live action TV series, and am trying not to dread the sitcom that was talked about. And now that all that's out of the way...That missing lightsaber scene is THE coolest SW related thing I've seen in a loooong time!

Lucas ain't gonna include SHIT cause he HATES YOU*!!

    by Orionsangels

He hates your FANDOM, he hates your nitpicky QUIBBLES about the matte boxes, he hates that you KNOW about the scenes that got cut out and most of all, he hates YOU! The worst thing in the world to George Lucas is a Star Wars fan because all you want from him is more more more and he doesn't give a FUCK about you or what you want. You'll be lucky to get the Empire of Dreams propaganda film from the 2004 set, with its lies, untruths and flim-flam. That's all the behind the scenes you need and how dare you - I say again, how goddamn DARE you ask for more than he has already provided, you insignificant PEASANT!! You'll GIVE him your money, oh yes you will! You'll give it to him so he can continue to NOT make the tv series, NOT make other movies and generally NOT reward you for your years of faithful service to the glorious Empire. * and in all instances, by "you" I mean "us" and by "us" I mean "me"

  • Aug. 14, 2010, 3:53 p.m. CST

Why did they cut that scene?

    by Chuck_Chuckwalla

I don't get it. Just like I don't understand about the amount of time and expense of doing full restorations of the original materials. That's such a load of bullshit. Lucas has more money than God and can't spare a few hundred thousand to get those cleaned up? There would be film students eager to get the opportunity to do it for FREE.

  • Aug. 14, 2010, 3:55 p.m. CST

    Special Editions

    by Mr Lucas

were a failed experiment and should be retconnned out of existence quite frankly(Mr Shankly). Just restore the originals and give us all the deleted scenes. All that bollocks about the time and money needed for restoration just doesn't wash with me.

  • Aug. 14, 2010, 3:57 p.m. CST

The whole fucking point of the SEs was to salvage those prints

    by JT Kirk

This is what it means to not let bitterness and resentment haunt you forever. Lucas has become the very Dark-Sider that his Luke Skywalker character was warned about turning into by master Yoda. Originally, the Special Edition project was meant to restore the badly-aging master print of the original Star Wars (ANH specifically) because the assclowns at 20th Century Fox had stuck it in a vault that was rotting it. Lucas went to restore the print, and realized he could finally go back and fix some of the stuff he had resented in his heart for those (at the time) 15 years from the frustrating shoot on ANH. So he starts fucking around with Greedo and Jabba and special effects like the landspeeder floating, and adding shit from ILM's work on Jurassic Park just because he has access to the files. Then he says "well, this is fun and working out well, folks will want to see the other 2 movies when we release this, so we'll release them too" and the master prints to ESB and ROTJ are fine because Lucas owns them and has them stored better, but then he says "wouldn't it be fun if we just kept tweaking shit arbitrarily on the sequels as well? The fans will love that!" so he goes out ON A FUCKING WHIM and starts hacking up ESB and ROTJ despite neither film being directed by him, or even really written by him. Adding a painful musical sequence to ROTJ and a ridiculous beak to the Sarlacc, changing dialogue arbitrarily, tossing in a scene to "better explain" how Vader gets from Cloud City to his Super Star Destroyer. And now the original trilogy is truly lost because those ORIGINAL masters are not available, they've been perverted into Lucas' cheap whims.

    by donchild

if not for the ewok stuff and the extended Jabba sequence. The central story of Luke was brought to its conclusion just perfectly and the the three way play off in the third act with Luke/Vader/Palpatine, the rebellions attack on the Empire & the battle on Endor was brillant stuff apart from obviously the Endor segment. Its a pity though because what could have been a note perfect finisher to an already classic movie trilogy is sold short by a desire to sell a range of cute lookin teddy bears to pre schoolers.

    LV_426 - Sgt Candy

The Candy scene $hits all over the mystery of the Arnold terminator...<p> I always figured that the T101 Arnold model looked the way it did due to it having to cover the massive endolskeleton..and it was kinda like Skynets idea of what a perfect humanoid would look like - the atlas thing..and that it was developed as a way to infiltrate humans after the crappy T600s with rubber it had arnolds face as thats just what a T800 model 101s skull happens to look like when you put skin on its head <p> where as in that stupid T3 scene suddenly it was all based on Sgt Candy as early as 2003?! <p> thankfully it was only a deleted scene (its almost comical in tone - almost like a gag reel) and there was no indication in T4 the T800 is based on any captured soilder or anything - thus retaining the mystery of it<p> anyway the whole Darth Baby in TPM was the same kind of shitty thing as Sgt Candy - Lucas should NEVER have shown us Darth as a stupid little kid!!

    Prequels were destined to disappoint

    by donchild

They are so deeply ingrained in the psyche of longtime fans that any attempts to make real the movies we've made in our own heads was always gonna leave the faithful feeling sorely letdown. That doesn't mean that they still couldn't have been really strong movies. Lucas's basic story arc for Anakin I felt was on target, the political manouvering of Palpatine, the forbidden love between Anakin & Padme, Sidious, Maul, Anakins turn to the dark side motivated out of fear of losing padme combined with his crumbling ability to distinguish between the good of the jedi and the evil of the sith's use of the force. All great story and plot material, the problems lie with the complete lack of feeling, the lifeless dialogue, pedestrian pacing, flat acting, the miscasting of Hayden Christensen in what should have been one of the best roles in movie history. Ep 3 while easily the best of the three (how could it not have been)is painfully let down by all of the above. If only Lucas had of hired somebody else to direct using his story outlines, but with better dialogue somebody else as Anakin we could have had something a lot stronger even if not as good as the movies we had in our own heads.

(although we would be kind of prepared what with the disappointment of the Prequels)<p>

A happy ending was the right thing for Jedi.

    by rev_skarekroe

A bittersweet ending is a terrible idea. It's Star Wars, not the freaking Godfather. That said, the SE closing song is way better than the original Yub Yub song.<p>Also, the theatrical introduction of Luke (and especially the green lightsaber reveal) is way better in the finished film. It's neat to see this moment, but good that they cut it.

This scene is very simple, yet very powerful with Vader continuing to tempt Luke to the Dark Side.<p>Still, this scene deserved to be cut from ROTJ. Luke's entrance into Jabba's Palace force-choking the two Gammorean Guards is better.<p>Hearing the crowd go nuts when Luke turns on his lightsaber reminded me of being eight years old again in 1983 seeing ROTJ.

That scene is not authentic at all, Lucas has duped the fanboys

    by CeejayNightwing

Not only has Mark Hamill stated he never shot that scene before. But the Vader shots we see of him walking and then entering the elevator are stock footage shots as opposed to the one of him sitting in his meditation chamber with the sharper meaner helmet design from Revenge of Sith as opposed to the old design fro teh OT with the larger eyes and rounder back that covered his neck. Clearly this meditation scene shot is make-shifted and unlike the other shots of the chamber in the other films that establish the background setting of the chamber, this not so cleverly diguised series of wipes from one stock footage shot to another simply opens with a close up chamber that has no background. Worse still is that the construction of Lukes lightsaber took place in Ben Kenobi's old home, not in a cave! The reason they never shot it was becasue it wasn't cost worthy to rebuild that setting from ANH so they wrote it into the novelization and also in that crappy Shadows of the Empire book. This mock up scene they've constructed to generate the same old wild imagination that fanboys let loose every time Lucas announces another SW project or home video release is another classic Lucas fabrication in the long line of Lucas lies and fabrications. And NO, that's not Mark Hamill under the hood and its not even his hands! And the stock footage of 3PO in the background is simply digitally superimposed.

That introduction of Luke was amazing!

    by Stereotypical Evil Archer

I mean that was bad-ass! The shadow of the hood just hits all the right beats. Could you imagine if they had played up Luke's temptation towards the dark side? Yes, there's Ewoks and singing aliens, but ROTJ has the great emotional payoff of Vader redeeming himself. It would have played even stronger had they amped up Luke's temptation. I hope they go whole hog with the deleted scenes. It would be awesome for fans to make their own cuts from the material. That would be the definitive film school in a box that Lucas used to talk about. He really used to care about using Star Wars as an educational tool, then he got way too protective when he should have embraced people making their own cuts. It would be the ultimate flattery. Many people want to improve or put their own touch on something that they enjoy; this ideal should be embraced.

    by TheJudger

cant wait to compare them to the wookiegroomer 1080p german broadcast versions. I've been watching this series in 1080p for over 3 years now. Lucas is late to the party so hopefully theres tons of new shit and somehow I dont know how a better transfer. See for me what i hate the most about the special eddtions dvd and bluray is the punched up fucking colors. They added tons of digital color gel effects and skin tones and, well everything is always fucked up and off colorwise. Hopefully lucas will atleast fix that. have to keep an eye on DVD beaver for info when it comes out. Wrath of Kahn got color raped when it came out on bluray as well. Less educated fans for that film so no one really spoke out about it. too much orange and red digital gel filter effect in Kahhhhhhhhhhnnnnn!!! Why fuck with perfect. Keep the color timing as it was. All of this about the "original" prints being lost...

    by kevred

...wouldn't every second of the first film have to have been reproduced and completely cleaned up in preparation for the new effects when the SE version was first created back in the 90s? It seems ludicrous to think that the first step in making that version wouldn't be to create a pristine copy of the original film, end to end, to use as the new canvas. Is there more to the story I'm missing?

    This nonsense about "old-looking" effects

    by kevred

Name me one single special effect from the last 5 years that anyone cares about as much as those "dated" effects from Star Wars.<p>Fools who focus on the technical perfection of an effect are losing sight of the purpose of effects - to help tell the story - and also overlook the fact that the original SW effects have a *style* and *artistry* that has simply not been exceeded.<p>There are probably tens of thousands of artists in the world today who are more technically proficient than Van Gogh or Hendrix were. But who cares? Who made the ART? That is the only question that counts.

    Killing Han Solo

    by catlettuce4

It's a bad idea because kids (me included at the time) would have absolutely hated it. And simply killing him in the version they did make would have been bad. But in the grand scheme of things, a version of Jedi where Han died saving them all at the end (I'm thinking piloting his own ship against the Death Star) would have worked very well. It would not have been "happy" but would have fit the story and been resonant.

I was still a kid when Ewoks came on the scene and our course I was charmed by them, but I totally understand now the irritation or outright loathing. Still like them, though. As poorly executed as it was, they do sorta represent the danger of the Empire to innocents. I had that making of book from the time that had some weird concept sketches of proto-Ewoks with long spindly legs. Though the later spider-y or alien proportion aliens of the prequels seem out of place considering the originals established that most of the aliens were in anthropomorphic proportions.

No they didn't. i saw it when it opened in the first tun theater in 1982, and then saw it about 4 more times at the second run theaters a few months later. They did not do anything to it color wise. That is exactly how it was when released. Previous video and DVD versions are no way to match it as they did not have the DP's overseeing the color timing during transfer. The only thing they had to do with Kahn was to make an IP as the film was deteriorating, which is what Lucas had to do to A New Hope. It is softer as it is another generation removed from the final IN used to make the prints, but that is it. That is how the film looked upon release.

Say..anyone older their late 30's bitching about not having access to the Pre-Special Edition versions in any number of home format(s) is a complete moron. You literally passed up about 20 opportunities (or more perhaps) to have them in your hands. Also people that are unfamiliar with the image and effects quality of the movies before the Special Edition restorations (and they were restorations not just added CGI) would scarcely recognize the movies and most of today's ikids would literally LOL and mock and ridicule some (particularly effects) sequences. And as long as there is AICN I guess there will be a place to flay Lucas. I swear the writers here believe they have to make a jab on a scheduled basis to keep oxygen pumped in.

I only wanted to add that I am very happy about this. And I really want the original trilogy, as originally shot. (Back in the day, I picked it up for over 100 bucks on VHS and it was worth EVERY PENNY!)

    I’ll say it again

    by dumbpeoplesuck

Not sure what happened in that last post…I’d just started typing and for some reason, BAM! It posted my first two characters. *ahem* ANYHOW…the ewoks were necessary. Like how they look or not, they were too primitive for the Emperor’s vision. He could not see them interrupting his carefully laid out plans, and they were the Hobbits in the Star Wars galaxy. They changed the course of the battle in such an unexpected way that our heroes were able to win out against the empire. Wookies would have been too far advanced a species, and the Emperor would have anticipated them. They would have figured into his vision. I agree, though, the SE ending was far superior to the original yub yub dance. Far more poignant. To me, that new ending music and the cutaways made the special editions worth it. Now, if Greedo still shoots first in these forthcoming releases, I’d really, really appreciate some young fanboy with far more time on his hands than I have to swap out that horride scene from A New Hope with the original and far superior Han shooting first scene. That would save me them time it takes to swap out the disc. I refuse to watch that bad dream at all. I typically watch the original version up to that point, and swap out the disc after Han flips the barkeep his Sorry about the mess coin. The SE Death Star battle sequence plays much better than the original, and that makes A New Hope’s SE worth it for me. Oh, and George? I like the SE DVD treatment of Luke’s dive away from Vader into Cloud City much better than it was in the theater in 1997. Please DO NOT reinstate the sissy yell. That’s not at all Jedi-like. George taught us all what it was to be a Jedi, but he fell too close to the dark side for a long time. Here’s hoping Luke turns him back to the good side.

    by UltraTron

Failed promise. Could have been different. I really can't see how you could have screwed up more than he did. But then the original cut of starwars did reveal him for the idiot he was. What we got was the work of several people creating something much greater

Lucas can't afford to restore theatrical version?

I don't care if Lucas corrects technical limitation

    by SithMenace

mistakes from the 80's, like matte lines. Hell, he can even leave that awesome digital sunset when it wipes to R2 on Tatooine in ANH, but leave the structure of the films alone. No new scenes. <p>In fact, with Blu Ray, isn't it possible to have a choice between films? Touched and untouched? I think Blu-Ray's capacity is plenty big enough to contain two versions of one film on each disc. But then how would Lucas sell two different sets of Blu-Rays? <p>I for one will be waiting, unless they restore the Jabba's palace sequence to exactly what it was in the original, and remove that ridiculous Sarlaac snake face. Leave a little mystery for fuck's sake. I want the old Ewok celebration song back too. It was cheesy, but it's part of my childhood film going experience.

Kurtz should have been in charge

    by DeadAtRecess

“We had an outline and George changed everything in it," Kurtz said. “Instead of bittersweet and poignant he wanted a euphoric ending with everybody happy. The original idea was that they would recover [the kidnapped] Han Solo in the early part of the story and that he would then die in the middle part of the film in a raid on an Imperial base. George then decided he didn’t want any of the principals killed. By that time there were really big toy sales and that was a reason.”

    Revisionist History+Greedo Shooting First=...

    by DatoMan413

Figured I'd get into this one, being careful not to go into the prequels, cause that just makes my ass hurt. Some of the improvements made to the originals were just adding more texture to the universe; Cloud City, Mos Isley, and so on. And if the changes stopped there, no problem. Greedo shooting first to make Han look like less of a rogue, that's just revisionist history per George. In other words, Revisionist History+Greedo Shooting First=BULLSHIT.<BR><BR>Having said that, IT'S GEORGE'S BULLSHIT. As much as I and most of us bitch and moan, George doesn't care because he knows the majority will snap up the Blu-Rays the moment it comes out. As for me, I'll probably wait.<BR><BR>By the way, there were a couple scenes, which escape me right now, but I was like "They chose to fix the Han/Greedo with with god-awful animation but they didn't fix (insert scene here)?WTF?!

That's because most of the people at the con

    by SithMenace

are ADD prequel retards. Aka Pretards. How can you claim to be a Star Wars fan and not know who Gary Kurtz is? <p>It's no coincidence that, while still good, ROTJ is the weakest film of the OT. Some of that was Marquand, and the rest most likely was the lack of involvement from Gary Kurtz. It's a shame Lucas was unable to hire Spielberg, like he originally wanted. 1983 Spielberg directing an original trilogy SW film? I think the Earth would have exploded from the sheer awesomeness.

Also the original theatrical editions were released in 2006 in letterboxed format as "bonus-discs" sourced from Laser Disc masters. Much better than your fan-edited "anamorphic" Laser Disc to DVD encodes. On that note this BLURay release will be the final nail of your fan edited Star Wars, where the the colours and contrast are boosted. Fan-editors always post screenshots from 2004 DVD and compare them to their edit-sourced from the 2006 HD TV Broadcast and go "see how much better my version looks!!!". I can boost colours and contrast on my own thanks. seriously, thanks Jon Stewart for not asking the question everyone is asking "why aren't you getting up off your diabetic ass vis-a-vis the Star Wars Live Action TV Series". It's been SIX FUCKING YEARS since it was announced ...ironically when the SD-DVDS were released in 2004.

Kurtz is WRONG. The ending he envisioned would NOT have

    by Coughlins Laws

been better. I could make a case for Han dying at the beginning of the third act, but to not have Luke decisively win, really? In theory, a little darker would've been cool. But that's just too far and too emotionally unsatisfying...

  • Aug. 15, 2010, 8:32 p.m. CST

    by ZodNotGod

And you sound like a bitter asshole who didn't get his way like Mommie promised. Han die at the end? Why? So dumb. Granted Han's arc is a little dull once he gets in the forest, but to kill him off would have been all kinds of foolish- a real downer in the worst, unsatisfying way.

  • Aug. 15, 2010, 8:37 p.m. CST

Stop making shit up just to bitch about it!

    by ZodNotGod

You people are bitching about things that NO LONGER EXIST! On the DVDs now: there is NO Greedo shooting first. There is no scream when Luke falls in Cloud City, (the scream in the 97 edition was how it was originally shot, but not put into the theatrical versions until the re-releases). And the endings to the SE are vastly superior, at least Jedi with the Galaxy wide celebration and the cool new, music.

ROTJ changes I'd like to see...

    by Obiwankedabi

If I could have just 2 visual effects changes to this blu ray version of Jedi, it would be to redo the shot of the droids being lifted out of the sand and the the star destroyer crashing into the death star. Both those looked subpar even in 1983.

    SithMenace - Latest DVDs

    by ObiBen

I went looking on Amazon, and all of this is confusing as hell. I think the DVDs are the same as in 2005, it's just that they are screwing with the packaging and bonus material.

  • Aug. 15, 2010, 9:38 p.m. CST

    Yeah obiben, that's what I have, the 2005 dvd's

    by SithMenace

    Lightsaber reveal scene

    by Campion

I don't know, I liked the saber being revealed on the sail barge. Up until then no one had even seen a green lightsaber, and the moment he lit it up was so damn cool to me as a kid. It's ok to see a scene that was filmed and cut out, but I don't really need it in ROTJ.

  • Aug. 15, 2010, 11:10 p.m. CST

    SithMenace - I had forgotten

    by ObiBen

There was a release in 2006 including the untouched versions as bonus material. Apparently the transfer from the laserdisk dubs weren't very good. Anyways, the same story will repeat itself with HD, then soon enough with 2K-4K formats and on and on. Lucas seems to have found a way to stick a moisture vaporator up the proverbial cow's ass, 'cos we're way past powdered milk stage by now.

  • Aug. 15, 2010, 11:44 p.m. CST

I posted this in the other SW thread...

    by DeadAtRecess

...but there are two SW threads on here posting about the same things. Ok so I'm a copy and paste it starts now...The ending wouldn't have been a downer, it would have been poignant. Even Hank Ford said that he thought that Han should have died. I at least think that they should have killed Lando in the Falcon while trying to escape from the Death Star before it exploded. The ending of ROTJ is WAY too upbeat. It's like there was no sacrifice. Sure Darth finally came around and bitch slapped his boss to save his kid, but he was a villain for 99% of the trilogy. They needed to show sacrifice from the good guys. Not just random pilots of varying ethnicity blowing up in space. Did they even show any of the Rebel commandos die on the moon of Endor? Wow, I don't think that they did. What a stark contrast to the first 5 minutes of ANH, where like a billion Stormtroopers massacre like 30 Rebel dudes in a hallway on Princess Leia's Corellian Corvette (or Blockade Runner if you prefer). ANH and ESB set the tone for the story. The bad guys were BAD. There was violence and bleakness in this galaxy that the story took place in. There was darkness. Even look at the Mos Eisley cantina, that good 'ol "wretched hive of scum and villainy"...Luke was accosted and they would have killed him had Ben not been there...and none of the other patrons would have batted an eye. Then we get to ROTJ, and I'm sorry but the ending does not fit the tone of the other two films. Even the beginning of Jedi at Jabba's palace when he mercilessly kills Oola by feeding her to the Rancor. That was some harsh shit. The ending just does not fit AT ALL with the tone set up by the first 2 films and the beginning of the 3rd. I'm talking about the original ending. The "special ed-edition" ending is wickedly stupid. So they show all of these places erupting in joyous celebration after the Emperor dies? Like everybody in the galaxy KNEW that he was dead when he died at a SECRET LOCATION? And did all the other Imperial troops just turn to dust like they were some sort of fucking magical spell? To me ROTJ gets a lot more flack than it deserves. Yeah I hate the Tarzan yell and the saccharine sweet ending, but Luke and Darth have a badass fight and Luke is a total hero in the end the way he stands up to Palpatine and says "Fuck you". I also like that the Rebel fleet is just convinced they are fucked so they give it their all. Just wanted to be clear that I don't hate ROTJ (I hate all of the special editions and all of the prequels, and the Holiday Special, which was better than all the prequels combined), but I hate the ENDING of ROTJ. It should have been grittier and with some sort of sacrifice on the part of the Rebels. This was called Star WARS after all.

Kurtz and Lucas tell so many stories...

    by Chief Joseph

I've heard that Lando was supposed to die in ROTJ. Kurtz said that Luke was supposed to die in one interview. Now he's saying it was Han. I'm starting to think neither Lucas nor Kurtz had anything planned out at all.

  • Aug. 16, 2010, 1:19 a.m. CST

    The Tarzan yell

    by Chief Joseph

When I was a kid I thought that it was an Ewok making the Tarzan yell and I had no problem with it. Years later, it was pointed out to me it was actually CHEWBACCA yelling and now that scene annoys me every time. I hope Adywan does away with it or pitches it up to sound like an Ewok.

    Kurtz is a doofus

    by darthvedder81

He's mopes around giving interviews chock full of his sour grapes and then milks the Saga for all it's worth by showing up at conventions. People who say he and Kershner were some sort of film geniuses forget the fact that neither of those two guys did anything before or after their involvement with Star Wars that was worth a shit. I thank them for their contributions to the Saga but let's not get carried away. Oh and Kurtz's ending would have been horrible. After the downer that was ESB Star Wars needed to end on an upbeat note of resolution (especially in light of Ep. 1-3). Kurtz didn't get that and GL (you know that guy who invented the whole thing??) did.
