A new poster (and one of the final pieces of promo art, I'd assume) for Alexandre Aja's PIRANHA 3D has gone online.
I love this. It's a little bit JAWS, a little bit B-movie exploitation. A little cheesy, but also a touch classy. And, it's a throwback to the art for Joe Dante's 1978 PIRANHA movie. Awesome all the way around.

Simpler, clearer, plain and easier to read. And, unimaginative and unevocative. This checks off all of them.<p>Nice poster overall, but more timid than the international one, which is more literal about what they're selling.

That 9 min sneak reel was awesome, can't wait to see this in dare I say it..3D. Looks a blast, Aja knows his market and is savvy enough to reference Dante's original and Jaws et al.

It would have been Harry to trumpet Eli Roth's role in this. And Harry would add that it rivals Buster Keaton in comedic/action genius.<p>BTW, after a summer of eh (beside Toy Story 3 and Inception...wait a minute didn't we say the same thing about last summer, except for Up, The Hurt Locker and District 9..??)...this looks to be the perfect movie that knows what it wants to be...and delivers. Sorry, Predators...it could have been you, but you blew it.

Predators was a big disappointment. I was expecting chaos and at least two or three "holy shit"-worthy gore set pieces. But no. What do I get? Some admittedly great creature work and YET ANOTHER dumb fucking twist climax. I've actually enjoyed many of the recent remakes/re-imaginings, but this one took the uncreative and easy way out at every turn. And btw: High Tension ruled, and everyone who hasn't should check out P2.

spoiler alert! (just in case) The ship exploding at the end, in my opinion, was a way to mislead the audience into thinking Brody was onboard when it blew. And then PRESTO! Brody is all alive and shirtless and smeared in mud and ready for payback. That was weak, I thought. And the twist was when Topher Grace turned out to be the big bad (besides the Predators, I mean). It may have been easy to see coming for some people, but I think it was made with the intention to surprise people. Just in my humble opinion. Or maybe my perspective was a bit cracked since I was intoxicated when I saw it.

nevermind this poster is still full of gay fish. Now that other poster with the chicks ass pointed at the view sans a decent camel toe, with her bra resting on the bed of the lake and her beer sinking in, with the fish coming for her muff. That is the HetrofucktualRex poster. That's the one that should be all over the walls in the cinema's.

This movie has 7000 gallons of blood compared to 500 for Hostel. At comic con footage intended to be shown was deemed too graphic so they had to move it to a nearby theatre. I believe you Rendell.

It was like a week ago. Bakini top on the lake floor chicks ass all up in our face, her beer sinking to the bottom and right infront of her a school of piranhas ready to eat her out. It's another internation poster of some kind and the best one yet. It would have been a perfect pick for the american cinemas poster ad's. Oh well. films are making mroe cash overseas now anyways.

Those 9 minutes that leaked online were kinda gross in a good way. It's all silly, but the deaths were brutal. And the one scene where the piranha bites someone's dick off and spits it out was kinda shocking. Didn't think they'd go there. <P>Roth's death was great. And the wire splitting the chicks in half was pretty bad ass. <p>Again, didn't think this movie was going to be like that. Also why isn't everyone talking about how Dreyfuss is playing the same character from "Jaws"?

There was a pre-screening of this at a marketer suite a couple of nights back. I wasn't invited but one of the people who went is a client. Basically, don't take your girlfriends to see it!!! He summed it up with the words "Goriest. Movie. Ever!" He also said it was pitched pretty much perfectly in terms of how seriously it takes itself, and that Aja hasn't held back AT ALL! Only concern is what rating it gets vs. what the studio wants.

One other point he mentioned from the marketing shindig. He said that they are not discussing this as a "remake" of Joe Dante's Piranha as per most of the press. They are actually talking about it as Piranha 3 (in 3D as per Jaws 3D), and that there was Piranha, Piranha II- The Spawning (thank you James Cameron!) and now Piranha 3D.

I like the original a lot, good campy fun, black humour and a tolerable level of gore.<p><p>This one has a good cast, probably even darker humour and, lets not forget, lots of boobies! Now, I like boobies (particularly when they belong to Kelly Brook) but I do not enjoy seeing them mangled, fed through a blender etc.<p><p>Instant. Loss. Of. Erection.<p><p>The bits (see what I did there) in the preview like the girl getting her hair caught in the propeller, the girl coming apart in the arms of 2 rescuers and the girl having a piranha eat through her face... from the INSIDE... <p><p>is not my idea of fun!

However playing Devil's advocate for a second, I would counter that if you go to an Andre Aja film about killer fish to achieve wood and get off, then buddy, remind me never to go speed dating with you!!! :)<p> Also, hasn't overt sexualisation immediately preceeding horrific violence been a staple of the horror genre for decades, maybe even since the first busty wench was on the recieving end of a vampire's bite?<p> This is because we feel at our must vulnerable, and least guarded when we are being amorous or intimate.<p> It taps into very primal instincts and the jarring transference from pleasure to terror, from arousal to massive "Fight or Flight" response has been fucking up cinema audiences since the dawn of time. My twopenneth anyway.

I think there is an awful lot of 70's / 80's slasher DNA in Piranha 3D. I would probably also use the words "Pulp" and "Exploitation" if I was writing some kind of high brow thesis on it.<p> But I'm not. Now all I can think about is Kelly Brook. Absolutely has to be up there in the FHM 100 sexiest poll. She makes Megan Fox look like the mardy faced, emancipated Hollywood munter that she is.

Well, she is from the Medway towns!!!! Kelly Brook I mean, and not one of Sinatra's egg-fried hookers. I doubt Don Frank would find much to tempt him in the Medway towns!<p> Apparently the sprink break massacre scene is nearly 30 minutes long in the movie. I fear the censors are going to get involved. Does it still count as genital mutilation if a CGI Piranha does it?

Frankly, after watching that preview and hearing all those other details, I think the MPAA are gonna give it an NC 17 rating. If there were just a few moments of "Full on" gore then I doubt there would much furore, it would be rated R and that would be the end of it.<p><p>But, there is SO much of it, it's VERY realistic and, as you say the massacre goes on for 30mins! They may have to release an edited version for cinema and then release an unrated version on DVD.

In US ratings, is it R where you have to be accompanied by an adult, and NC17 that you can't see at all unless you are over 17? Can't remember how it works.

NC 17 is equivalent to an X rating. It's also considered the "Kiss of Death" commercially as very few US cinemas will touch a movie with that rating...

. . . who really likes the original? I'm sure its because I first saw it way too young when the babysitter let me watch it. But I don't consider it campy at all. The only stab at comic relief is that stupid camp counselor. There's also that stupid, unnecessary stop-motion creature in the military lab. I love it when they're trying to get to shore as the piranhas are taking the wooden raft lashings apart.

I think they're unlikely to get an R rating without having to trim it in some way. US censors are now much stricter than the UK BBFC.<p><p>Wether Aja and co are prepared to do that remains to be seen. I would be dumbfounded if it got an R rating uncut...

I fucking love the original! Mainly because when it came out it got nearly mythic status in the junior school I was attending at the time. I think I took a good few years before I could spot the inherent humour in the whole thing. When I was younger it was just a kick-ass and gory film about killer fish eating loads of people! Same as American Werewolf. When I first saw it, when my older bro showed it to me, after my parents said I couldn't watch it, I was too busy shitting myself to see any humour (black or otherwise) in that film!

Now I've only seen Hostel II but I actually thought Roth was a bit more restrained than I'd been expecting. From what I'd heard about Part 1, I think it may have been in danger of an NC17 too, particularly with explicit sex thrown into the mix... <p><p>I'm sure there are others on here that could give more of an informed opinion on the subject!

First movie to jump on the Jaws bandwagon. It copied Jaws in everything from the scenes, characters, right down to the ending. Soooo bad but the waterfall scene was good although it too was a jaws scene ripoff.
