ScoreKeeper Needs Five Survivors to Battle PREDATORS And Win a CD!
Greetings! ScoreKeeper here on the hunt for five elusive killers brave enough to enter my latest CD soundtrack giveaway.
I have in my possession five copies of John Debney's violently raucous score for PREDATORS (2010) which was just released by La-La Land Records this past month. This is a great score! There is much to laud and praise. I love it's gut-pounding weight, it's soul-crushing terror, and the respectful manner in which it threads material from the original PREDATOR (1986) score composed by Alan Silvestri.

If you want one, you gotta come and get it. Here's what you need to do.
Email me at scorekeeper@aintitcool.com using the subject: FEED ME TO THE PREDATORS! and include your name, mailing address, a valid email address, and your favorite moment from any movie featuring a Predator. I will drop all the victims into the field of play and will randomly select the five survivors. Each survivor will continue living as well as receive a brand new copy of the PREDATORS CD composed by John Debney courtesy of La-La Land Records.
The deadline for submission is Saturday, August 7th, at 11:59PM EST. Only one entry per person please. International entries will be accepted. Duplicates will be discarded.
Happy hunting!
For more information including audio samples and order placement please visit La-La Land Records.

This score is better than Silvestri. Does anyone agree?
by therealharold
This score is so epic. Yeah, I like Silvestri's theme in the end credits, but Debney's themes and music throughout the movie are so bad-ass. It really does have gut-pounding weight.
-
The score WAS Silvestri, just filtered through Debney.
-
Aug. 1, 2010, 5:10 p.m. CST
therealharold, it relies too heavily on Silvestri to be "better"
by MattmanReturns
Don't get me wrong, I loved the homage, and Debney did a great job of remixing and intensifying existing themes... but it wouldn't exist without Silvestri.
-
The weakness of the score was it's heavy reliance on the score of the original. Just made it painfully obvious of how much if a rehash this movie was. Even used the "showdown" cue for the Yakuza! You may say homage, I say unoriginal.

Well, they SHOULD reuse the original's themes
by SierraTangoFoxtrotUniform
I haven't seen Predators yet, but considering they seem to be basing it off the truly great original version, they need to use the original's awesome themes.
-
According to the credits, Debney only used Silvestri's main theme, and if I'm not mistaken it only appears in the end credits and maybe a few other times. The rest is all original John Debney and it really rocks. Check it out if you haven't heard it.
-
Get it right? Have you ever even heard Silvestri's score from Predator? Obviously not becasue there is not one cue in the film that I heard that DIDN'T feature Silvestri's original score. Debney added some bits to it, but that's it. The only reason that the main theme is the only one credited is because that was the only piece taken directly from the film, the rest were interwieved into Debney's own 'original' compositions. So pull your head out of your ass and go listen to your Tyler Bates scores you fucking moron!
-
I'd be upset if Silvestri's themes weren't used, so I'm glad for that. And Debney did a fantastic job of getting the sound and instrumentations right. I do wish however that he'd been bolder and played around with the themes a litter more so as to give them a fresher quality. Debney didn't really build on or add anything new to it. It's true, there are more than a few moments in Predators where it sounds like someone just needle dropped Silvestri's original.<p> A good example of what I hoping for would be Mark Mancina's Caribbean infused score for Speed 2: Cruise Control. He takes the his original Speed themes and gives them a little twist, and in so doing brings them to life anew. <p> Oh well, the film itself wasn't particularly bold or fresh so I suppose neither should the music be. In fact in that respect, the score is more successful at equaling the original than the film. Although both the film and score were fairly satisfying, Debney's work is the more consistant and rewarding of the two.
-
Good score. Owes a bit too much to Silvestri, but enjoyable enough. "Let's Get Off This Planet" is one of my favorite cues of the year. Just beautiful.
-
You know right when the credits rolled the most random unfitting music popped up like from Little Richard or something and it was like a big WTF moment. The song right after that was the one they should have used.
-
The score is, to a lot of people, an emotional subconscious thing, it evokes a feeling, especially when dealing with a sequel. Debney's score used the original Silvestri score brilliantly, if he had done his own thing completely it would be like doing a sequel with the same character but re-casting the part, which loses the audience (Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner? WTF?)
-
am I the only one who thinks that is cool news? got it from superherohype.com
-
Or you take everything you read literally. I saw the film twice, and there were multiple themes from the original.
-
except without the "s" and it's by Alan Silvestri.

I just started to listen to the Predators OST
by SierraTangoFoxtrotUniform
And MOST of it so far is straight from Silvestri. Perhaps you're the one not getting it right, therealharold.
-
God I hated that flick.

I'm gonna cut off your own pussy lips and feed them to you.

The Little Richard song is featured in the original movie
by Nasty In The Pasty
it plays during the helicopter ride into the jungle. I agree that it's kind of jarring in the end credits of Predators, though.<BR><BR>BTW, Intrada is reissuing Silvestri's original Predator score on Tuesday (the previous Varese Sarabande release has been OOP for the last seven years), so grab a copy of that if you don't have it already. I like Debney's variations on the original, but Silvestri's score can't be beat (although his Predator 2 score is kinda lame, with all those cheesy midi drum samples.
-
Why did you repeat that?<BR><BR>I didn't. You see? Because of the echo...
-
the predator score is the greatest score of all time
-
its fitting this movie did as well. i mean seriously, outside of the little drum beats to give it that haitian vibe, it sounds like Part 2 literally re-used the first movie's score.
-
if only NOT to WATCH that SHIT of a MOVIE AGAIN!
-
But i´ll do. Assholes hate it, so it can´t be bad.
-
You know what I've always thought actually is that the orchestration and recording on Conan The Barbarian were kinda weak. Not Poledouris' fantastic compositions, just the over all sound wasn't as strong as it should be. Probably budgetary realated. But I mean that thing should really kick and rumble with bombastic force like nobody's business. <P> I'd really welcolm a new re-recording of Conan. But only if it was done by either The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra or (speak of the devil) John Debney and The Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Those are the two outfits that really know how to equal and in some cases improve upon the original with their re-recordings. They obviously take it very serious. <p> By the way, that's the reason Debney is so proficient at adapting Silvestri. He did a fantastic re-recording of The Back To The Future Trilogy with the RSNO. So he was extremely well versed in Silvestri's flourishes and stylings before landing the Predators gig.
-
It makes first AVP movie interesting - that's HOW NOT BAD IT IS
-
Debneys score WAS Silvestris score. Suggest you rewatch Predator.
-
I don't see why everyone is trying to belittle Debney's contribution to this film. He has an awesome style and the movie is filled with great material by him. So Silvestri's main theme pops up here and there, is that a crime? Debney's work is amazing and I think his coolest cue is the scene where the Asian warrior has the showdown with the Predator. Certainly that part might be "Silvestri"-esque, but it is clearly not the main theme.
-
..this film really blew in every respect...the only people i knew who enjoyed anything in it were the ones EXPECTING it to be completely awful
-
had debney NOT used any of silvestris themes, he wouldve been raked over the coals.<P>yiou guys bitch and moan that that doyle and hooper arent following through with williams themes for harry potter for consistancys sake..well here it is and yet you still bitch and moan.
-
I loved it. I'll be getting my copy!

Scorekeeper is right. Debney's scores are "soul-crushing."
by therealharold
Good to see that someone got it right.
-
You must not have seen the original film then aye?

MattmanReturns - The same goes for RoboCops recordings.
by The_Genteel_Gentile
The listening expierence isn't as rich as it ought to be. <p> Now Starship Troopers sounds great and appropriately rollicking.
-
Yeah, there are re-recordings of it, but they've all lacked the character of the original. I myself kind of like the low quality, as it gives it a more ancient, weathered vibe. At any rate, the Varese version is far superior to the Milan version, as it has more tracks.
-
is nearly the exact theme from the first film, when Billy faces the predator. This soundtrack is no different than Don Davis's Jurassic Park III score, which remixed and heavily relied on most of the John Williams themes, and added one new one.
-

MattmanReturns - Debney's is much better than Davis's though.
by The_Genteel_Gentile
Debney really got the sound exactly right, to the point where it's almost indistinguishable from Silvestri. However there was never a moment in JP3 when I forgot that Don Davis was no Williams. It's similar to the Williamsless Harry Potters. John Ottman did a better job with Superman Returns.
-
One of the best homage scores I've heard.
-
Aug. 2, 2010, 3:34 p.m. CST
Brian Tyler's AVP-Requiem score was an interesting homage
by The_Genteel_Gentile
to the entire span of both franchises. He concocted a strange faux amalgam of all the original themes from Goldsmith, Horner, Goldenthal, Frizzell and Silvestri. He just threw everything into the stew and stirred it around. I don't know, the movie was too horrible to tell if Tyler's experiment was actually a success or not.
-
I have seen the original like 15 times over the years but I did not memorize each soundtrack that was used...my bad, you obviously did. That means like 1% of the people who watch the movie will know where that song was taken from.

And the original Predator score is available from Intrada
by Nasty In The Pasty
Grab it if you want it, as it's gonna go fast (again).
-
....and, to be perfectly honest, I enjoyed that movie more than AVP-1 and Predators!!!
