Come watch JAWS documentary THE SHARK IS STILL WORKING at the Alamo next Monday with Quint and producer J. Michael Roddy!!

Published at:  Jul 30, 2010 4:14:07 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The kind folks at the Alamo Drafthouse asked me to host the upcoming screening of The Shark Is Still Working at the Alamo Drafthouse with producer J. Michael Roddy in attendance.

For whatever reason they seem to think I like Jaws or something.

I get asked constantly about this movie, the most in-depth documentary on the making and impact of JAWS and I usually have to tell the poor Jaws fans that they just gotta cross their fingers and hope the flick plays a festival near them.

This time I get to say something different. If you’re in Austin the film screens this upcoming Monday, August 2nd at 7pm, Alamo Ritz.

I thought I was the biggest Jaws nerd in the world until I met Michael Roddy. So for your money you not only get to see the documentary (which is still looking for distribution), but you get to see two Jaws uber-nerds discuss one of the best films of all time.

Hope to see some of ya’ there! This is an opportunity not to pass up! I’ll also be at the Alamo Jaws screening Tuesday! Any chance to see my favorite movie on the big screen!

Seriously - I love JAWS, and the documentary sounds glorious, but I absolutely loathe the writers on this site with the passion of a thousand suns. Quint blathering on introducing this great movie, using this great movie to promote this site = no ticket sold to me.

    by rebeck2

And it has been SHORTENED. I believe it was the first screening of the shorter version and I talked to one of the producers, who happens to live here in Denver. It is jam-packed with interesting material and because of that slightly overwhelming, but it is a JAWS fan's dream come true (which I most definitely am) and I can't recommend it highly enough. So ignore the above posts.

    LEGALITIES

    by tuttle300

you know, there may be those inevitible, annoying legalities are are tying up things so that we, the fans, can finally have a nice DVD/BluRay version of this documentary

and who knows what the legalities are....maybe every single estate of anyone featured in the documentary now dead wants a cut of the pie I have no idea (and if so they are overrating the piece anyway... it might actually undersell projections-- after all its a 35 year old film and many of the people who were in the film are gone now)
    but thats my guess....
unless the studio is hanging on for the 40 th anniversary
    (40th is a better number than 35)

Yeah I assumed part of the distribution problem was getting rights to photos, music, likenesses etc etc. But I think there is a DVD release of this project available.

However, at 2.5 hours I wonder if it would work in a movie theatre? For example, my guess is that Michael Moore's "documentaries" come in at around 2 hours, give or take. Perhaps TSISW is too lengthy for a theatrical release in its current form, unless it was screened at documentary film festivals like Hot Docs in Toronto.

This strikes me as the kind of thing that AMC, TCM or A&E would want to option to supplement their movie programming option.

its a small budget "genre" series it got a nice kick-ass documentary made independently and released widely on dvd. and there's Jaws, a movie that is a big ass wide release, major studio picture. something thats considered a true classic and the documentary is having trouble finding distribution? thats just weird. they should just try and release it to dvd on its own.

    Guys...

    by rebeck2

From what the producer told me it's simply down to Universal - the many film clips from JAWS would cost the producers literally thousands of dollars for every few seconds if they wanted to find another distributor, and that's just not feasible for them, so they really can only wait for Universal to release it whenever they decide it's worth it. It is mind-boggling the studio doesn't see the profit they could make when so many people love JAWS, but what can you do? The producer I talked to basically said they had hired an entertainment law firm to handle it and that was all they could do. I got the feeling they were all completely worn out and demoralized by the situation and ready to move on. I guess the moral of the story is that you cannot make a "fan" documentary and hope that the rights to the footage will be released. I'm sure they thought Universal would be thrilled to distribute it, and it makes sense. It's too bad because these guys did a fantastic job and got practically every interview they wanted, including The Beard himself. (The only person that wouldn't sit down with them was strangely enough Teddy Grossman, the stuntman and the guy killed in the estuary scene)

JAWS is really a miracle of filmmaking.

    by sailor rip

    Seriously.

A movie about a shark eating people. The source material was there from the book but under any other filmmaker it could have been a syfy(?) movie.

They took a book about a man eating shark, what could have EASILY been a B movie, and made one of the greatest masterpieces of cinema.

I'm in awe of this movie and every time I watch it I amazed by it.

    Saw it last year...

    by greatgonzo

And it was still 2.5 hours. Really a great doc, but only for the Jaws die-hards. There is some stuff in there that's kind of fun, but totally pointless (like a bit about a real shark in Martha's Vineyard... interesting, I guess, but had NOTHING to do with the film itself). And way too much about Jaws-Fest. However, you have to respect how thorough these guys were in getting every possible interview (including Scheider before he passed) and approaching it from every possible angle. Here's hoping we do get that DVD. Let's go Universal!

As for Roddy- gotta love his passion for Jaws but comes off as a bit of an egomaniac. At least to us "little people"....

Honestly, if the goddamned Biography channel here in the UK could screen a 2 hour "story of Jaws" special last week AND USE FOOTAGE FROM The Shark is Still Working, why the FUCK can it not get released?

I'm in Scotland too, just knowing this thing gets a screening once or twice a month somewhere in the States is so goddamn frustrating! Not as frustrating as the whole Jaws Blu ray fiasco. If Jaws isn't on Blu ray in 5 years for it's 40th B-Day, I might just have to destroy Universal, who's with me!? In the meantime, Jaws fans, enjoy this song about this fine film itself... What I don't understand...

    by sk229

that the makers of this were able to get all of these fantastic interviews and behind-the-scenes footage I've never seen anywhere else before, yet they can't get the rights to actually get the doc out there? Methinks the entire thing of waiting it out is a ploy on Universal/Spielberg's part to marry it to the eventual blu-ray... and if they don't, if we get the same ole shit recycled (even though that stuff was good as well, I get more of a comprehensive 'Dangerous Days' vibe from this), it will be fucking sad. Since this is five years old, I'm sure they can do an extra 30 minute, more up-to-date 'reminiscences' feature on the BD as well. All classic movies need this kind of comprehensive treatment, by the way, the kind that is not just BTS, but also measures impact on society, other filmmakers, what's happened since, etc.

And yes, it is a miracle of filmmaking...

    by sk229

This movie really is one of the greatest ever made, hands down. It is so primal and goes so deep into our fears, frustrations, limitations, and puts us against each other and against nature in a way that I don't think any other film ever has... AND it's hugely entertaining. I think movies like this, The Godfather, Star Wars, The Exorcist, etc., are the perfect marriage between art and entertainment. It's what Nolan tries very hard to do but I feel that he sometimes falls just short because his films take themselves a bit too seriously... or they sometimes come across as self-conscious about the fact that they're trying to marry art and entertainment. However, Inception had some moments of great, unexpected and welcome humor, and seems like a pretty perfect movie-going experience... I have to see it again and really, only time will tell, but I do think the film is an amazing feat. He's the only game in town as far as I'm concerned when it comes to getting us back to that 70's art/pop aesthetic... genre movies that you can both dig on an artistic level as well as just sit back and enjoy purely as great, escapist entertainment.

How many Jaws documentaries are there?

    by ted striker

This new movie has me thinking... What other Jaws documentaries are out there and worth watching? I've come up with a few: (1) "In The Teeth of Jaws" (50 mins; rare BBC TV production); (2) "The Making of Jaws" (125 mins; 30th Year DVD Extra); (3) "Jaws: The Inside Story" (90 mins; The Biography Channel); (4) "The Shark is Still Working"... I saw #3 earlier this year on the Bio channel, and it was excellent. Will this new one add anything beyond famous fans gushing about how Jaws changed their lives and formed their careers? Personally, I enjoy the cast interviews, how-it-was-made bits, and stories about the production.
