International Eye Candy
July 28, 2010

Where to begin with this edition of International Eye Candy? Should it be the German vampires? The Hong Kong crime thriller? The Norwegian slasher? Or should we jump right into SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND star Viva Bianca getting both naked and violent? All of that and more is coming up!

We start things off in New Zealand where fave short film director Jason Stutter – look up his CAREFUL WITH ... series of films if you have a moment – makes his feature debut with the dark gothic comedy PREDICAMENT. And who is in that PREDICAMENT? Well, there are three of them, actually, but the one you’re going to recognize is FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS star Jemaine Clement as a would be con man at the core of a blackmail ring. Delightfully absurd stuff here with a deliciously bleak edge.

Good lord, I love that image from Benny Chan’s CITY UNDER SIEGE. And if the idea of a mutant-powered gang of bank robbers rampaging through Hong Kong puts a smile on your face then that smile is about to get a whole lot bigger with word that there are a pair of new trailers for the film. So brace yourself for a heaping dose of star Aaron Kwok in a fat suit ...

Over we go now to Germany where we find the latest from director Dennis Gansel. Gansel made a big splash internationally with THE WAVE a couple years back, that one being a based on a true story tale of a high school political science experiment with fascism gone badly wrong. With his latest, WE ARE THE NIGHT, Gansel again taps into a dark side of youth culture but this time filtered through a vampire story rather than fascism. Yep, that’s the girl from Tykwer’s PERFUME as the new initiate into vamp culture, which in Gansel’s world is a dark spin on the club world.

For something completely different we head down to Mexico and Alejandro Innaritu’s BIUTIFUL. The latest from the director of BABEL and 21 GRAMS took a bow in Cannes this year where it won raves for star Javier Bardem’s performance in the lead. Some early behind the scenes looks promised good things and now the first proper trailer has arrived to give a better look.

We linger in the arthouse for a little bit longer, this time moving to Japan for the first trailer for Tran Anh Hung’s adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s NORWEGIAN WOOD. Those familiar with Murakami know why this is a big deal – it’s the first of the famed writer’s novels to be adapted to the screen – but for those who aren’t it’s a fantastic, almost nostalgic little love story. I still hope that someone is going to tackle some of Murakami’s more surreal stuff at some point but as an entry point to his world it doesn’t get much better than this.

We stay in Japan now but it’s hard to imagine anything more different from NORWEGIAN WOOD than CAT SHIT ONE. Yup, animated bunnies shooting the shit out of camels with a variety of high powered weaponry. We’ve run trailers from this one in the past but the first full episode is now streaming online for free. It’s geo-blocked outside of Japan but that’s simple enough to get around and instructions on how to do so are included at the link below. Bring on the animated violence!

A third face of Japan now before we move on to other ground, this one a big, flashy live action adaptation of popular manga and anime series GANTZ. Yup, the big black ball is in full effect and nope it won’t make much sense at all to those not familiar with the source material. Again, there have been bits and pieces of this one popping up for a while now but this is the first proper trailer.

Raise your hand if you’re a fan of Thomas Jane. And if you’re not, then prepare to become one. Director Mark Pellington is currently in production on his low budget indie thriller I MELT WITH YOU with Jane in the lead. And though production just started, Pellington and Jane got together a few months back to shoot an extended promo for the project. It’s much less a trailer than it is an extended monologue from Jane and it is a pretty stunning testament to the man’s raw talent. Yes, must see.

For manliness of a different sort it’s off to Hong Kong and STOOL PIGEON, the latest from director Dante Lam. Between BEAST STALKER and FIRE OF CONSCIENCE, Lam is pretty much the man when it comes to Hong Kong action cinema right now and this one shows all signs of continuing his current hot streak. Lam reunites his entire BEAST STALKER cast here for a gritty foray through the murky world of gangsters and for-hire police informers. Stylish, smart, bold and gritty, this is looking to be the one to watch from Hong Kong this year.

There’s an explosion of genre film in Norway right now and more than any other the film that is responsible for it is Roar Uthaug’s COLD PREY. A huge hit when it was released COLD PREY was the first true slasher to come out of the region, one that quickly spawned a sequel and one that is now about to unleash a prequel that dives into the origins of the vicious killer at the center of the series. The first teaser of this one was a cleverly constructed piece that rolled backwards through the chronology of the first two films to establish that a prequel was coming but now the first teaser featuring actual footage from the new film. And it looks goooooood ...

Another European killer film now but one with an entirely more serious tone with Baran Bo Odar’s German effort THE SILENCE. THE SILENCE is a very meditative spin on the serial killer film, one that builds its story around a body found in the exact same location, killed by the exact same method, the two murders separated by decades. More on the arthouse end of the spectrum than the balls out thriller, this is just really haunting stuff.

A double burst of Japanese insanity here from the mad geniuses at Sushi Typhoon. What are you getting? First, a trailer for MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD prequel YOSHIE ZERO, a Noboru Iguchi short film prepared as a bonus for the MGS DVD release in Japan. Second? The brand new Sushi Typhoon promo, featuring clips from the entire upcoming Sushi Typhoon catalogue including Sion Sono’s COLD FISH, Yoshihiro Nishimura’s HELLDRIVER (and that’d be AUDITION’s Eihi Shina as the HELLDRIVER zombie queen above), Noboru Iguchi’s ZABORGAR and Yudai Yamaguchi and Tak Sakaguchi’s YAKUZA WEAPON. Bring the madness!

If you don’t already know the name of Romain Gavras you will very, very soon. The current buzz boy of French film, Gavras made a big impression a little while back with the video he directed for MIA’s BORN FREE and he will soon be making his feature debut with Vincent Cassel starrer NOTRE JOUR VIENDRA. It literally translates to OUR DAY WILL COME but for some reason they’re taking it out internationally as REDHEADS and it looks like a pretty spectacular, genre defying trip of a film. Gavras is worth the hype.

And, finally, we wrap things up in Australia with X, the new thriller from ACOLYTES director Jon Hewitt. Viva Bianca from SPARTACUS stars as a high class call girl on what she hopes will be her last night on the job with ACOLYTES’ young star Hanna Mangan Lawrence as a young girl facing her first night on the street. Things, of course, do not go well and before long the two women are running for their lives through the sexual underground of Sydney. Though very definitely NOT for workplace viewing – frontal nudity of both genders lie within – this promises a compelling blend of grit and style.

been following it for a bit... Given that 98% of american cinema sucks it's nice to see trailers of projects that are not all driven by box office potential. I'm a geek at heart and love a good comic adaption but I miss films with substance.

A brilliant film about two competing mountain climbing teams, one from Germany and the other from Austria, trying to be the first to climb Mt. Eiger. A very good movie.
