An Interesting Audition Video From A SPIDER-MAN Contender Who Didn't Get The Role!!

Published at:  Jul 27, 2010 11:08:05 AM CDT

Merrick here...

We already know Andrew Garfield is the new Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

But many other dudes were gunning for that role...in a big way. One of these guys was Josh Hutcherson (who we'll be seeing soon in the RED DAWN remake, and have already seen in JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH). He put together a video selling himself for the part - essentially a 'proof of concept' for plugging him into the role, if I understand the intent correctly.

Latino Review has obtained and posted said video. In the end, due to a variety of factors, this production didn't save the day for Josh. But it's a mighty noble effort, an interesting insight into what could've been, and a fascinating example of the lengths people will go through to get what they want.

THIS piece at LR intellectualizes the embed below thusly...

But did you know Josh Hutcherson (JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, the upcoming RED DAWN') was once one of the top finalists?

You know how that happened?

By the cool audition piece you can now see in all it's glory below for yourselves!

Earlier yesterday, screen grabs from the audition leaked online. Thanks to an anonymous donor, we got the video.

Pretty cool huh?

Hutcherson's audition got the attention of the execs at Sony and I think a meeting or two with Webb.

I heard that up and coming fight choreographer Larnell Stovall from UNDISPUTED 3 chroeographed the gem below.

Now here's what we're talking about...

    by mortsleam

Because we've already seen it in Spider-Man 1. There's no real point to these movies if they're going to re-hash the same plotpoints. Yes, I know, he did to show he could fit into the Spider-Man role, and he did that fairly well. Not a whole lot of acting range on display, but good wire work and interesting choreography. Particularly liked the sideways crouch before he kicked Flash. Very Spidey kinda move. But Peter in high school was done already. Hopefully Sony will wise-up and just have Garfield as early 20's Parker, continuing the character like a new Bond.

The transition from awe [at his powers] to anger [when MJ is hurt] is minimal, mostly coz he seems to be going for 'badass' when tone should be awe. Maybe it highlights lack of actor's range.

If your not complaining about Garfield being in his 20's your complaining that the actual teenager has zits on his skin. What the hell do you guys want?

Also, Blue Dog, the whole point of the audition video was that it could prove he has action chops. If the producers need proof that he can act all they have to do is go to the theater and see The Kids are Alright or pop any of the other dozens of movies he's done into the Blue Ray. But the fact is, he doesn't need to prove he can act because they've already worked with him...loads of times.

I hope the rumor is true that due to his age they've dropped the concept of starting again in high school. Because if not, the movie will be FUCKING BORING. We've seen him deal with bullies and shit already give us the Lizard... Or the Vulture... Oh wait that's what got Raimi fired never mind. Seriously this leaked video all it did was make me miss Raimi. I understand the dancing and shit in SM3 was horrible but Venom was pushed on him. The producers are the one's to blame. I just hope these people know what they are doing. Start the movie with comic book intro for credits using boxes to show all the introduction stuff the audience already knows(ex. Getting bit by spider) and then start with him working for Connors.

    by snake foreskin

The mouth-breathing is a definite characteristic that he needs to nip in the bud ASAP. Also, he needed someone competent to direct his acting, not just choreograph his physicality. And the setting was incredibly distracting. Besides, this is only going to come across as a lame imitation of what we already have on film with Tobey McGuire. I prefer the cafeteria scene in Sky High!

I'm actually one of the few guys that wished that Josh Hutcherson would've gotten the part and this audition tape was actually quite impressive. I just wish he did more of a scene with dialogue, I think that would've gotten him the role more than if he just did a stunt audition tape. Still, I thought the line of dialogue he did do, was very good and I thought close to what Peter Parker would say. Still, it's only after I've seen Andrew Garfield in the trailer for "The Social Network" that I can let it slide that he'll be the next Spider-Man.

...please. Just give us the classic Romita Sr. phase, full of great characters, great villains, great Peter characterizations, and a great, vibrant city setting. Make us a classic Spidey movie for the ages, not some kind of stupid teenage Twilight-chaser. Peter doesn't need to be a picked-on nerd; he was only that way for a short time early on, before becoming the active, outspoken, intense young man of the Romita days. That's the Parker that could be a real movie star.

the kid had some definite Spidey-type moves in there, but Garfield looks closer to how Peter's been drawn since Romita, Sr.-he's even closer than Maguire! As far as which version of Spidey this new movie should be; I'd be up for the Bendis/Ultimate Spider-Man or the JMS/Spider-Man...but let's face it, as long as the producers are the same-Arad & Ziskin- there 'aint a chance in hell of getting anywhere close to either. by veritasses

I gotta applaud him for that. But he didn't really 'get' (or he should've done more with) the Peter Parker as the high school kid part. The Peter Parker character is what makes the stories great, not Spiderman. He just dressed the part of a generic nerd and then made a somewhat generic action stunt video. Next time, whip up some dialog...
And it didn't help that he looked like he was breathing through his mouth the whole time.

Yeah, the facial expressions don't work at all. The writing and direction are weak, but then, this isn't a writer's or director's audition. It succeeds in suggesting this guy could be believable in the part, but not in making me want to see him actually play it.

    Two things:

    by confusedpanda

    (1) I agree with the talkbackers who said this audition tape seems to demonstrate fight choreography more than it does acting. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a second scene after this one that focuses on dialogue and character. If this fight scene alone was his audition tape, he never had a chance. However, maybe they met with this kid to get the names of the individuals who helped him stage the fight....maybe they hired someone behind the scenes. That at least explains why they met with this kid. (2) I really, really hope that SCOTTPILGRIMFAN actually sees Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World during its opening weekend. Now, I realize that he'll still act like he saw it even if he doesn't, but I really do hope he sees it.

No...no....no...this is terrible....Hutcherson LOOKS in every way terrible..(aesthetics thru' to the 'facial' acting). Let's face it...this idea of re-making Spiderman is 'recession Hollywood filmaking' - i.e studios are too scared to take risks by pouring money into fresh ideas, and instead choose 'existing' franchises (safe!). You can also bet that Hutcherson's 'people' wanted this 'out there' - for PR reasons - ("look, our guy got close to bagging the new Spiderman role !")...

Actors that make videos to sell themselves for a role

    by chuck_chuckwalla

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sean Young went to extreme lengths to get Tim Burton's attention so that he could cast her in Batman Begins as Catwoman. She went so far as dressing up as the character in tight leather and going on a TV show to promote herself, only to be dismissed when they handed the role to Michelle Pfeiffer. She later drifted into obscurity as an actress probably because everyone in Hollywood thought she was a nut-job. On the other side of the coin, Elijah Wood did a short film of himself as Frodo and it worked.

Why are you blaming Marvel for Spider-Man?

    by shell_shock_0714

Marvel Studios only has the film rights to Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers movie. Sure, they got the film rights of Punisher back but Spider-Man's film rights still belong to Sony/Columbia. So, if you're going to get pissed off at a studio for some reason, in this case it should be Sony! I'd bet the farm that if Marvel had owned the film rights to Spider-Man, we'd be getting a fourth Spider-Man from Raimi right now instead of a reboot. Most of Marvel characters film rights still belong to Fox, Sony/Columbia, and maybe New Line Cinema who owns (or owned) Blade. As of right now, Universal and Lionsgate lost the rights to Hulk and Punisher respectively to Marvel.

    by jethrobodine

Ok, this guy did his BEST to try and get the part. Gotta hand it to him, it looks like he busted his ass to get the part. Good for him. Hopefully it will pay off for him in other ways. The sad things is that the director of this audition tape should have told him was that he was making "monkey" faces as he grunted and frolicked around on the mats. He went to a lot of trouble to try and get this part, and his "director" should have let him know that he was making monkey-like faces and the he needed to stop doing that. That's part of the director's job. This "director" didn't do him any favors. --- Now if they were holding auditions for MonkeyMan.... hmmm....

Video outright fucking proves it, but i i do have an issue. after he put down the first guy the other guys wouldnt have come after him. He dropped the biggest fucker on his ass. Usually the shirt tuggers run away or walk off like they saw nothing. Also by the time the other guys fight got sdtarted it went into radfuckingdiculous land. They saw him do all that shit and they still wanted to fight. And the chick was still worried for him. Hahaha, no.. Thats hollywood for ya. I dont mind seeing spiderman do shit liek that but it's gotta be against a real villain not some highschool bullies. Those citizen types dont stay around after someone runs up a wall and back flips behind them. So um yeah, Josdh was the right choice, bar none he's younger the series would last longer with him in the role, his face is good for the character and he doesnt have a fucking giraffee neck like that brit twit fucker you guys went with. Greatest is has a great plot to play with. Drama Teacher's bus breaks down on a field trip, could be the grand canon or something. aliens give him a suit that makes him super human, but he loses the instructions. He becomes the most dorked out fucking superhero ever, and he constantly fucks things up. He gets the instruction back near the end, he reads the shrinking directions. And both him and book shrink. I know I don't have any, and yeah it does get a little annoying but no one is forcing you to see the remakes and reboots and all that. Shit so much has been done already it has to seem like a rehash. I mean movies in space will always be in someway compared to star wars, superhero flicks will be compared to other superhero flicks. by lemonheadron

lost it for me, not a bad audition for a random action film, but surely not the next spiderman? Do we really need to see peter parker once again go from the nerdy kid to "wow i can fight and have powers thing" AGAIN!? Sure reboot the story but reboot it from him being spiderman not from him becoming spiderman...If this is the angle they're going for, wire-fights, slow motion etc..then......um...yeah.

Maybe Mephisto WILL be in the new movie.

    by triple_j_72

I'm picturing the opening credits will have a montage of the "Raimi Trilogy" and then have the camera fade to Mephisto's realm and he'll have this long drawn-out soliloquy about Peter Parker and how he's been watching him all this time... and then with a wave of his hand, he'll wipe the slate clean and voila, the film begins. Brilliant, no? heh...

..it was a "fight" audition tape. NOT a simple audition tape, this kid's already been in movies. This was simply to show he could do the physical part of the movie. He's an established actor, and I'm *pretty* sure the zits and unwashed hair were done on purpose for the sake of playing a high school nerd. For reference, please see your high school pictures..

if you were in a fight with a guy and he jumped 10 feet off the ground on to a locker wouldnt you just give up and call it a day? I like the look of what they did there but its seeming more cartoony like the dancing in Spiderman 3. In real life nothing like that is happening even with the extraordinary thrown in. If they want to go the batman route and make a realistic comic movie this aint even close to it

she can fuckin act. She's great in The Kids Are All Right, In Treatment, and the cool zombie short I Love Sarah Jane. Right age..well, not compared to who they cast as Spidey hah, but yeah.

I reckon Hutcherson's acting in this woulda been ok if he'd just leavened it with a smile and a wisecrack a little earlier on. The taking-it-all-very-seriously worked at first but then he kinda came across like a frustrated school- shooter

I'm a big fan of the kid. He was solid in a load of kid movies. Zathura, Journey at the Center of the Earth and let's not forget the phenomenal Bridge to Terabithia. I like how someone says the kid will never act yet he has been in tons of movies lately. He's clearly going through puberty but the kid knows how to act and he would have fit nicely as Peter Parker. Michael Angarano or whatever would have been a poor choice. In all of his movies, he has the same stupid mannerisms. I loved Sky High but after seeing him in Snow Angels, I really began to catch on to what he does with his acting and it really bugs me now.

She is most likely a friend of Hutcherson's. Keep in mind that all of these proof of concept reels are paid for by the actors themselves. Even rock stars have to pay for their own videos. It's more than likely everyone involved in this production, being employed by the kid himself, is someone he already knows from the business. She's probably an actor friend of his. Or maybe they are repped by the same agency. I find it hard to believe he'd hold auditions for a part in an audition tape which was meant to benefit himself.
